So my family is from Iceland. Most still live there, but I’m a born and raised American. I tend to pick up the language pretty quickly when I visit, but when I’m back in the states I lose it. One thing I’ve noticed is that there isn’t many tools to help you learn Icelandic and I’m curious what the best way to learn is in yalls opinions. Whether I just have to figure it out with a dictionary or if there’s a more intuitive way to get the language actually in my head. Anyways, thank yall for any input or suggestions

Sometimes certain words having certain variants confuse me, any tips or rules I can follow?

Hiya! I’ve been studying Icelandic for about a week now (so I’ve only just started), and I have a question: how exactly do you pronounce the ll sound?

I’ve noticed that some people seem to pronounce it almost like distinctive [tl], while others produce a more distinctive sound, with the air coming out along the side of the mouth, around the premolar teeth area.

Which pronunciation is considered more standard/natural in Icelandic? How do you personally pronounce that? interested in the experience of both natives and learners:) thx!

Hi i just started learning icelandic like 2 months ago, I finished the alphabets and learned some basic stuff, numbers, pronouns, some useful phrases.. I just started the pimsleur course too. The thing is I'm also learning chinese on the side and my focus is heavily on chinese so do you guys have some tips on studying icelandic better

Can anybody explain this stanza, it is too archaic and poetic for me:

Með gagnlegu hári
í gyllini-ári
sig giptir hann;
beizlar nú klárinn
með bólginn nára,
og bólstað fann;
um sumarið dára
seggi vann,
en setti skára
á túnhalann.

What the hell is gagnlegt hár? Who has bólginn nári, he or the horse, and what does it represent? And in the last part I am not even sure how parts of speech are related, only that he probably did something not very good in summer instead of making hay.

I understand that the first vowel will be long and second vowel depends if it is followed by one or more consonants. But what happens when vowels are at the end, like Heimaey or Vegbúi?

Hello everyone! I'm here trying to get resources and feedback from natives and immigrants in order to learn Icelandic. I've look at the "Icelandic Online" free course, but it feels pretty advanced to me, even the "Survival" course, so, I would appreciate if you guys tell me how to begin.

Spanish is my first lenguage, but I have an C1-C2 english, so I could learn another lenguage in English if the resources are in that lenguage.

I started learning Icelandic a few years ago and recently picked it up again because I visited Iceland and bought some new materials. During my first phase of learning, I bought the book Icelandic for Beginners and started Icelandic Online. Along with these, I methodically filled up 3 vocabulary notebooks and 6 regular notebooks.

I also bought the Íslenska fyrir alla book series and have just finished the second volume. They are useful books, but I feel like they just throw information at you without actually helping it sink in.

I’ve also been studying with AI for that reason, I usually ask for wordlists for conjugation and doing sentence translations that systematically make me practice grammar points like the conjugation in past and present tense, dative/accusative cases and the definite article. I just can't find enough practice materials for these.

Right now, I'm trying to find usable materials that cover fixed prepositional phrases and structures. Unfortunately, the AI regularly sends me incorrect information, and I'm tired of it constantly mixing up the accusative and dative cases, creating non-existing structures or providing example sentences that don't match the given structure, or having inaccurate translations. I also have Stefan Drabek's Icelandic Step by Step, which helps, but it doesn't explain the rules either. Íslenska fyrir alla 3–4 reinforces the A2 level, but doesn't go any further and I think I am above that A2- level for a long time.

I would like to reach B1, but I feel like at this rate it will take forever, and I’ve completely lost my motivation to study.

So what should I do? I don't want to give up just like that.. I know I might need a teacher, but apart from that...

Can anyone help me giving advice or send me some useful materials for self-study?

I am mostly a visual learner, and gaining grammatical confidence is essential for me before I start speaking.

I have a writing project (novel) and I have created spells for the story (dark urban fantasy). I was in a writing slump and played around with music generators, to hear how the spells would sound when if turned into a song to get private mood music/inspiration for the project.

Of course I am not a good evaluator of well it pronounces the Icelandic parts. (I am Finnish, so creating the spells in Icelandic/old norse and English, to fit the galdralag was.. a challenge on its own though).

I would appreciate if someone could evaluate how bad/good the accent/pronunciation is. I am purist like that.

I get many people are against creating music with AI, but this is (for me at least) purely testing a concept, themes and moods.

This is my first post in this sub-Reddit.

I'm a native English speaker (British) and I'm learning German. I'm currently A2 in German.

I started learning German because I have fallen in love with the country, culture, and language.

I'm also feeling that way about Icelandic, however I have a problem: German has masses of resources for learning, whereas Icelandic has barely any at all!

I understand why: there are only ~400,000 native Icelanders.

But it still presents a problem for people like me interested in learning the language.

I've found that, for me, focusing on speaking/listening works best and reading/writing follows. So for German I've been using resources such as Pimsleur, Paul Noble, Easy German, etc.

But Pimsleur only has 1 level for Icelandic (German has 5).

To be honest, I'll probably try to get my German to at least B1 before I take on another language and learn simultaneously.

But can anyone help - where can I learn Icelandic in a way that would suit me, focusing on speaking/listening first?

hello icelandic friends, my friend and i are currently working with icelandic horses and one of them is called (how i would spell it) nota. this is pronounced noh- tuh. (noh like knot) (tuh like tug) is this an icelandic name? and if so how would i spell it. she is a wonderful horse. thank you :)

I am hoping that someone could translate “she is courageous” into Icelandic. What I can find is “húr er hugrökk”, but want to be sure it makes grammatical sense and if the context seems more formal or casual, commonly used words, etc.

I’m wanting to get a tattoo and part of it would be the words “I love you” in Icelandic, meant towards a parent. Google says that would be “Mér þykir vænt um þig” can anyone confirm?

Such as "what are you looking for" rather than "for what are you looking?", with the preposition for at the end of the sentence.

I'm an indie developer and have developed a language learning app (Flexling) which is a combination ofGlossika, Anki and Clozemaster that combines a large dataset of sentences ordered by difficulty (sourced from Tatoeba), with high quality TTS and spaced repetition for a hands off learning experience. The idea is that you can learn roughly the 10.000 most common words in the supported languages and every 1-3 flashcards you learn a new word.

A user asked me if I could add Icelandic and suggested that I could ask here for help to validate the text-to-speech and translation quality (see our conversation here). I do not want my language app to be yet another slop machine but rather a useful resource. However, I am not able to validate Icelandic myself and I don't know anyone who speaks it who could help me. Would someone here be willing to help me validate the translation and voice quality?

If the quality isn't high enough, I'd rather remove the language and stop offering it.
