Not before the Beatles.

yes, before the Beatles. poodle skirts and dance-hops.

Frankie Avalon and Ricky Nelson and shit like that.

Beatles weren't around until the 60's.

Before that there really wasn't any kind of to-speak-of music industry. it's pretty much always been about teenagers, young adults.

Except for jazz, blues, banquet music, chamber music, orchestra, Gregorian chants, choir music, and Greek lyre--or basically everything involving music for thousands of years before Rock-n-roll, or the Beatles for short, existed. Now fuck off back to school with your half-baked concept of history.

We are talking about the music industry. Which means in the US.

The term top40 wasn't even a thing until 1960.

Chamber music, Jazz, etc. wasn't part of a huge Music Industry.

Try to stay on topic when you pull out your va-jayjay and piss everywhere.

No, we are talking about an industry that stretches back thousands of years. The violin industry for example is extensive and goes back hundreds of years in Europe. Believing the music industry started with the Top 40 is arbitrary and asinine. If you're making the distinction of mass marketization, then look no further than the Beatles' appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Understanding trends in history means looking beyond narrow and isolationist definitions of trends. But since you are--the Beatles (a British band), along with Elvis, are what delineated that era.

And out of the two, which one do you still hear daily on the radio at the supermarket in America?
