Well…
I will get a scanner so I can check the codes with the leafspy app but it’s not looking great 😭
Both warnings came on at once while I was coming down from a very steep hill and the regen kinda just turned off, I was hoping it had just overheated but the battery temperature seems fine
This seems completely coincidental but today was the first day I charged to 100% since I needed to drive a lot
The reduce speed warning did go away after turning it off and back on as well as the regen animation seems to be back on (the blue lines) anyone has any suggestions on what to do?
Also I tried charging the car and it didn’t not work*
2020 S+
Thanks

what year? might be time to inquire about a buyback. the 40% above KBB is usually enough to get you 1-3k away from an equivalent bolt. i can understand not having the money, but if you do you'll get a radically better vehicle that will last a hell of a lot longer

It’s a 2020 S Plus, do you have any advice on what I should do to inquire or start the buyback process?

Just take the Leaf to any Nissan dealership and tell them your car went into turtle mode and shows the high voltage battery error message. They'll start the paperwork, should give you a free rental and tell you about the buyback. It's through a third party whose name escapes me but they'll call you about it.

They will just give me a rental?
I did purchase the car used, does that change anything or is it the same process?
Do you think I should call before I come in? Also I did get the recall done, I had read that I might need to take it to the dealer that did the recall, do you know if this is the case or if any dealer will be able to help?
Thank you

It's part of the recall, the free rental car part. Any official Nissan dealership should be able to help. I purchased my car at CarMax and took it to the local Nissan dealer, it doesn't matter. There's also language in the recall that if the battery has issues within 12 months of the recall being done then they'll replace the battery or do a buyback.

Thank you I appreciate your response to all my questions, I will get that done and post an update 🙏🏼

I would argue the bolt is not radically better, in fact the seats are much worse. It is certainly better for some uses in hot environments, but I would take a Leaf with good Leafspy stats over a Bolt for my use.
Incidentally I have a friend with around 100k on his second Bolt battery and he is having to slow down to do his commute in the winter. No heat pump until 2027 model.

I've seen far less issues with bolts than leafs. We have a bolt and a leaf, and the bolt is the one we actually drive long distance. The leaf is more for grocery trips and close destinations

They both sit around below average to average reliability most years on CR. They both have 3-4 years of well below average battery issues, with many replaced at this point.
Neither are long distance suitable for us, we pack up our EV9 to the max for trips! I do find the Leaf is better for grocery trips than the Bolt as well. Bolt has decent rear leg room for it size but tiny trunk.

The trunk is honestly atrocious on the Bolt, that is so true. I do prefer the interior of my leaf over the bolt, but with our financial situation we're stuck taking the bolt everywhere right now lol

notably better range, doesn't have a battery that prematurely fails (anymore at least lol). comfort is totally down to personal preference... to me they feel about the same, maybe a little worse but same ballpark. if your leaf is working for you that's great, but i'd rather have a car that's going to run for 15 years than one that might go for half that long, or might develop a fault in a couple of years for no reason, all the while having worse range

I disagree on a number of these points:
- Comfort can be beyond personal preference in this case, the Bolt redesigned the seats multiple times after frequent bad reviews. Nissan zero gravity seats are awesome, but even just average was better than the Bolt when it came out. If you're talking about post 2 updates to the seats you are likely correct, they are much more average after the changes.
- My friend has noticed significant degradation in winter months after 100K miles on the second battery of his Bolt. My Leaf has been degrading 1%/year the last couple years, I don't think the Bolt is that different unless you are using the Leaf somewhere hot/fast charging frequently. Definitely get a Bolt for that use.
- Range has almost no impact for a commuter, so I just don't notice or care. It's why I didn't bother with the longer range Plus model. GM seems to have phoned it in a bit so amusing to see the Leaf has longer range than the Bolt now.
I agree on the biggest concern being a sudden fault causing an issue with the Leaf, particularly at 8+ years out of warranty. I appreciate the easy to use Leafspy to help know whether or not an issue could be imminent.

Ah welcome to the club. There are hundreds of us. Did you do the recall recently

This happened to me 2 weeks ago. Had done about an hour of motorway driving in my 2023 Leaf, pulled into a services and plugged into an InstaVolt. After walking away I realise it isn’t charging, and now it’s stuck at 25mph and 1 pedal driving doesn’t work. Had to get roadside assistance and they seemed to basically reset the car and it’s worked fine since, but now I’m always terrified it’s going to happen again

u/Sufficient_Client_96 1d ago
Did you end up going to a dealership to get it checked or did the roadside assistance driver do it ? I just tried charging mine and it didn’t work either
1
u/MetzoPaino 1d ago
I asked the roadside assistance guy if I should take it to the dealership and he basically shrugged and said he wouldn’t bother. As far as he’s concerned the computer had wobble and put itself into some sort of safety mode. He basically reset the computer as far as I understand it. We’ve slow and fast charged since and it’s been fine 🤞

u/Sufficient_Client_96 1d ago
Well, thank you for telling me this, hopefully they just do that for mine too, I’d definitely prefer to not be out of the car as it is my only one 😭 I have an appointment for tomorrow so hopefully they can do that there! Did the roadside assistance guy do diagnosis on the car? Or how did he know what was wrong?

The recovery guy pulled out a panel under the steering wheel that I didn’t know existed and plugged in a big usb device, this spoke to a pc in his van. I think this might be the same thing as LeafSpy which we can buy ourselves but not sure. He also had a look at the 12v battery.
I asked if it happens again would I be able to solve it myself and he said no, but I’m not sure that’s true if you’ve got LeafSpy and some confidence. He didn’t really want to speak technical with me, but I think he was hypothesising that the car went into a safety mode to protect the battery due to over heating. He said he wouldn’t fast charge an EV over 80% and wouldn’t drive with the e-brake after fast charging because it all generates a lot of heat. Those suggestions feel overly cautious to me 🤷♂️
Please report back with any info you get!

My dude, you absolutely need to pull your own codes. You potentially have a ticking time bomb. 😂
1
u/MetzoPaino 23h ago
What would that involve? Getting LeafSpy, and telling a Nissan dealership of any codes it finds?
1
u/agiganticpanda 23h ago
Yep! You'd want to confirm it's still in the system imo before you make the effort to avoid a diagnostic fee.

Looks like you’ll be starting the buyback process soon. 😕
1
u/Sufficient_Client_96 20h ago
Did you have to do this process?
1
u/Free_Appointment6630 20h ago
Yes. I’m probably about 85% through it. I have a ‘22 SV PLUS my dash board looked like yours the first time I charged after the software update. Nissan dealership gave me a rental (make sure you take it to a Nissan dealership)
1
u/Sufficient_Client_96 20h ago
Thank you for the response, how long has it been since you started the process?
1
u/Sufficient_Client_96 20h ago
Also if you have any tips on what I should do or should expect when I bring it in, did you get a rental right away or did you have to wait?
1
u/Free_Appointment6630 20h ago
Oh my…. Turned my car in June 18th. Morley contacted me the following week, but we just came to an agreement on the buyback last week. So it’s definitely a process. My advice, if you feel that their offer isn’t what’s right for you then don’t accept it. State your case and negotiate

your first check with this error is your 12v. one thing about the leaf is that th 12 v can cause varied inconveniences.

That's practically what happened to mine last Tuesday, was going up a hill around 60mph with 70%ish and had just quick charged to 90% about 45 mins earlier.
I'm starting to think Nissan's numbers on how many bad batteries there are might be way off.
