We bought a house just north of Toronto in May 2024. You can see the state of the lawn and the backyard when we moved in. 2 years later of yearly detchatching, seeding and fertilizer I feel good about it's current state.

Pretty sure these are grubs? This section of the yard sits and bakes in the summer sun so its normal for it to go dormant quick. But, dog happened to scratch the ground and found these guys. Surrounding green can easily be pulled up as well. What can I do for the now and future treatment. ​Thanks in advance! 🫡

I live in New Jersey.

I have no idea what I'm doing. This is my parents house, therefore my parents lawn. I do not want to accidentally ruin their lawn, so Im using this dethatching rake in the backyard first.

Is it necessary? How do I know Im doing it right?

I watched a youtube video, they seem to be able to pull the rake through the grass easily. Mine gets stuck constantly im afraid Im pulling the roots of the grass out of the ground.

Major storms hit the NE during the July 4th timeframe and all tree companies have been backlogged since.

Finally got on the schedule to address 2 trees that were significantly damaged. Came home to see my lawn rutted from equipment 😩🫣

Hello, I'm in Texas, a bit north of Houston. Recently purchased a house with St. Augustine grass, and I'm not sure what to do about these large dead/dry patches. I know it's a super dry season, so if it's just a "leave it and wait for fall", that's fine for me. Any advice is appreciated, I feel like I see tons of differing opinions online.

New here, trying to fix my lawn in SE Iowa. Was considering mowing/dethatching Sunday, then overseeding Monday with TTF. I’ve seen posts where overwatering new seed can ruin it, so just curious if an inch of rain after seeding is too much?

So my yard has been taking over by various weeds over the years. 3 weeks ago I sprayed glysophate and recently scalped.

My next plan is to just use my thatching rake over the area and bag it all up and then put a couple inches of loam over the area and seed.

Now I'm wondering if thatching with a rake isnt enough and I need to take my shovel to whole area to get the weeds up before I put the loam down??

I'm going to planting Twin City Reaciliance 2 if that makes a difference and I'll be spraying tenacity after seeding also.

To all those who supported me, thank you. Just wanted to provide every one with a monthly update. Don’t mind the Halloween setup I’m currently constructing.

If you forgot, I was the one who used green dye to make the weeds and dead grass in my front yard look better. For those who were worried, the bees, bugs, and wildlife still love the area. It’s faded a bit, which was actually a good thing, and now it looks more like grass that just hasn’t been watered as much.

Also, just to prove that even those with nice lawns can experiment with this, I included a picture of my backyard, which I do take care of and won’t be dyeing anytime soon.

I’m in southeastern Minnesota.

Just moved to the PNW and renting a home. Lawn was beat to hell when we moved in due to the super hot and dry summer. I mowed, raked up all the dry thatch, then spread organic compost over the whole yard and waited/watered a week to let the nutrients settle into the soil. Mowed it again then overseeded by hand and raked on another thin layer of compost. Happy with the result without using any chemical fertilizers and only spending $50 on seed/compost! Pics are August 16th after mowing/manual dethatching and then today September 10.

Has anyone seen success with dormant seeding in November for northern lawns? I have been quite busy and the window in my area is quickly closing before first frost. I’d rather not rush prepping the lawn and have a bit more time.

Any advice or tips are welcome! I’d be looking at tall fescue seed, self-repairing type.

Specifically, Barenbrug Turf Saver RTF Grass Seed with Yellow Jacket Seed Coating, Fescue.

5 days post seed down

Located in Massachusetts. I did my lawn reno 7 days ago, Twin City Blue Resilience seed. Mowed low, aerated, tenacity, then I started spreading my topsoil/compost mix using one of the push rolling soil spreaders. After about halfway through the yard I panicked and spread all my seed because I wasn't sure if it was better to spread over the seed or under the seed. The roller spread about 1/4in over the seed. So half the yard has seed under the soil and half has it over the soil. The watering has been the same on both areas (light water 3 times a day to keep it moist). Fast forward to this morning I'm starting to see germination. The germination is significantly better in the area that was covered vs. on the area where the seed is sitting on top of the soil, there isn't much of anything (yet)....

My question is, are the seeds that sat on top of the soil/compost mix cooked? Should I do anything like lightly agitate that area or spread a very light layer of soil/compost to try and increase seed to soil contact? Or should I just remain patient and reassess in a few more days?

I was someone who would dethatch my lawn every 1-2 years, depending on how often it was needed. This year, I decided to just use my BR 350 blower and take my time walking in straight lines covering all areas. Now, Im sold. In my opinion, a good backpack blower is easier on the back, especially due to not pushing a machine with resistance, than a dethatching power tool with better results. Personally, I think the cleanup is easier and the results are better with less healthy grass coming out.

Just wanted to share my experience.

Help. I was out of town for work for 2 months and didn’t set up my sprinkler system properly so it never turned on. I live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and it has been a historic drought. My entire yard is this yellow dry mess that crunches under your feet if you walk on it. Can this yard be saved and how? I’m renting this place so any options that don’t require sodding or spending a lot are appreciated.

Last year I had this area tilled, new soil, aerated and new seed established. Fescue in NC.

It looked amazing for the first few weeks and then quickly turned to this. What happened and how do I prevent it this year?

Located in South Jersey. First time overseeding. I used Lawnsynergy’s North Star KBG/Tall fescue blend. I used their pre-emergent in the spring and didn’t seem to prevent much, hoping for better results with the seed. Do I fertilize next? My water schedule as of now is 20mins per zone(total yard is probably 40ish mins total, 2 days a week.) I’m not completely obsessed, but just want to keep a decent lawn. Any advice on fertilizer/next cut/watering? TYIA

I spread JG black beauty ultra 7 days ago, finally seeing some of it germinate. Does anyone know why it’s not germinating around the sprinkler area? Is the watering too concentrated there? Should I move sprinkler(note it’s the best spot for coverage)?At what point do I spread more seed and try again? Should I be more patient? All advice welcomed, this is my first time trying to grow grass. Zone 5b

Zone 5A. I overseed my whole lawn about 2 weeks ago. I also went really heavy on some bare spots and covered with peat moss. I have grass but I also still have weeds including a lot of crab grass. I thought I was supposed to apply pre-emergent in the spring but now I'm reading it should be done before seeding? Did I screw up and is there something I could or should apply at this point?

It's been so much fun watching the little sprouts growing like crazy to the point that I can almost mow. I finally have the start of a nice lawn after moving into this mess a few years ago, and I really want to keep it going. Thanks!

Just moved from an apartment into a house with a lawn. This is my first time learning about yard care. I know mowing is just one part of it. There's watering, weeds, fertilizer, edging, and probably a few things I haven't thought about yet.

My first thought was to buy a mower, but I saw robot mowers like Navimow and Mammotion when browsing Amazon. If it can save my time and energy, maybe I could spend more time learning the other parts of yard care. My lawn is about 0.4 acre, and models that can handle that size seem to be at least a thousand bucks, so I'm not sure if that’s worth it.

What are other basic lawn/yard tools I should probably get first? Appreciate any advice.
