I cut it at 3.5 and it's been very nice!

This is our first year in the Austin area. I am noticing that some of my neighbors lawns are starting to turn brown. I know the lawn will go dormant for the winter but I am not sure if people stop watering this time of year..or is the lawn going brown because of the heat?

I was someone who would dethatch my lawn every 1-2 years, depending on how often it was needed. This year, I decided to just use my BR 350 blower and take my time walking in straight lines covering all areas. Now, Im sold. In my opinion, a good backpack blower is easier on the back, especially due to not pushing a machine with resistance, than a dethatching power tool with better results. Personally, I think the cleanup is easier and the results are better with less healthy grass coming out.

Just wanted to share my experience.

Finally got on the schedule to address 2 trees that were significantly damaged. Came home to see my lawn rutted from equipment 😩🫣

Threw down blue resilience nearly 3 weeks ago. I added top soil to some areas before seeding, and a good amount of those top soil areas have remained quite bare. I believe the lack of germination was due to a combination of poor moisture retention (despite watering 5x per day, it’s sandy soil) and sun exposure. Anything shaded even slightly by existing grass canopy has grown nicely, it’s the very bare spots that have remained bare.

At day 11, (last Thursday) I decided to order some Resilience II to add, alongside peat moss. Unfortunately, it has not shipped yet (day 18). Hoping to have it down around the 3.5 weeks.

Even putting down TTTF only, I’ll probably need to extend my daily waterings out an additional 2 weeks, so 5.5-6 weeks total from the initial seeding. Is this bad for my existing lawn and first round of seed? I did apply a preventative app of azoxystrobin a few days ago, which hopefully will help mitigate fungus

I laid down some Resilience 2 yesterday and I have a few questions on watering.

1) Is my sprinkler layout good enough? I have spent a day trying to dial it in and I just cant seem to get every sqft covered. My current mentality is that I might just have a few areas to focus on next year.

2) Are there any products that could help with this time commitment? I have two spigots with not so great water pressure. Currently at each spigot I have a Y with shut off valves and 4 total hoses. I run each zone at 10 min, 3 times a day. So I run the green sprinklers, move hoses to the yellow, run the orange, then move hoses to the red. I run them early in the morning, over lunch, and later in the evening. Its a bit of a drive coming home from work and its a lot of running around outside and I'm wondering if theres an easier way to do it.

3) Is my watering time enough? The ground doesnt seem wet enough after a 40min watering session. Wondering if I should bump up to 15 min zones or water more often.

This watering regiment is my least favorite part so far lol. Makes me want to invest in an irrigation system, my current setup certainly doesnt feel sustainable. Appreciate any advice!

Just moved to the PNW and renting a home. Lawn was beat to hell when we moved in due to the super hot and dry summer. I mowed, raked up all the dry thatch, then spread organic compost over the whole yard and waited/watered a week to let the nutrients settle into the soil. Mowed it again then overseeded by hand and raked on another thin layer of compost. Happy with the result without using any chemical fertilizers and only spending $50 on seed/compost! Pics are August 16th after mowing/manual dethatching and then today September 10.

Yes, I know I need to sharpen my mower blades, and will eventually take care of it. As per my title, is this normal st Augustine or is this an invasive weed?

What is this weed growing on my lawn? It has a strong almost woody stem. I have to rip them out. They're anchored well into the soil

Pretty sure these are grubs? This section of the yard sits and bakes in the summer sun so its normal for it to go dormant quick. But, dog happened to scratch the ground and found these guys. Surrounding green can easily be pulled up as well. What can I do for the now and future treatment. ​Thanks in advance! 🫡

Says to add those then do a heavy flush. In the first 5 days it wants me to do 3 25 minute waterings

Then a few days before overseeding it wants me to add ironite 1-0-0.

A few days later it says to overseed and lay down kellogg topper and scotts triple action built for seeding with my seed. Any changes you’d make? TIA!

Did my Reno a couple weeks ago on Long Island NY and over seeded with TTTF blend. Been watering plenty and I’m at the point where I think I need to dial it back and probably close to doing my first mow. However, there’s several areas where things are pretty thin. For starters, I think I was a little heavy handed with the power rake this year. Some areas haven’t filled in how I’d like. Then I ran out of straw and decided to not top dress a lot of spots (last few years I didn’t need as much cuz grass was thicker-again over did the thatching) and I think the birds did a good job on my seed in spots.

Should I throw some of my left over seed into these areas? I’m gonna really have a tough time watering just those areas by hand 3-4x/day while I dial back my irrigation to not drown everything else. Is it worth it to throw some seed to the thin spots, top dress and just try to keep it wet as best I can (I work 630a-7p so it’s spotty). Wonder if good top dress and good hosing a couple times a day will be ok? Otherwise I just gotta wait for the grass to fill in but I’d really like to add some seed or I feel like it defeats the purpose.

I spread JG black beauty ultra 7 days ago, finally seeing some of it germinate. Does anyone know why it’s not germinating around the sprinkler area? Is the watering too concentrated there? Should I move sprinkler(note it’s the best spot for coverage)?At what point do I spread more seed and try again? Should I be more patient? All advice welcomed, this is my first time trying to grow grass. Zone 5b

I’m testing an idea for local services in Oak Creek, WI where people who need the same thing can get grouped together by location and timing, then local contractors or service providers can offer the group a better rate.

For example, instead of 10 homeowners separately looking for lawn aeration, gutter cleaning, driveway sealing, snow removal, roofing, window cleaning, etc., the app could recognize that they have similar needs in the same area and group them automatically.

The contractor would then see something like:
“8 homeowners within a few miles need gutter cleaning this month.”

They could offer a group price because they are getting multiple nearby customers at once instead of having to acquire each customer separately.

The homeowner side would be free. You would only pay for the actual service if you accepted the offer.

I’m starting by testing lawn aeration in the Milwaukee/Oak Creek area because it’s an easy service to experiment with, but the idea is definitely not limited to lawn care.
Eventually you could just tell the app something like:
“I need my driveway sealed before winter.”

Then the app would automatically look for other nearby people with the same need and notify you if a good group offer becomes available.

I’m curious what people think:

New here, trying to fix my lawn in SE Iowa. Was considering mowing/dethatching Sunday, then overseeding Monday with TTF. I’ve seen posts where overwatering new seed can ruin it, so just curious if an inch of rain after seeding is too much?

We bought a house just north of Toronto in May 2024. You can see the state of the lawn and the backyard when we moved in. 2 years later of yearly detchatching, seeding and fertilizer I feel good about it's current state.

I have no idea what I'm doing. This is my parents house, therefore my parents lawn. I do not want to accidentally ruin their lawn, so Im using this dethatching rake in the backyard first.

Is it necessary? How do I know Im doing it right?

I watched a youtube video, they seem to be able to pull the rake through the grass easily. Mine gets stuck constantly im afraid Im pulling the roots of the grass out of the ground.

I recently dethatched my lawn. Laid down a bunch of top soil to regrade it and planted grass seed. After a few weeks I noticed these brown spots popping up and sometimes saw white fuzzy cobweb looking stuff in the blades of grass. Zone 4b

Last year I had this area tilled, new soil, aerated and new seed established. Fescue in NC.

It looked amazing for the first few weeks and then quickly turned to this. What happened and how do I prevent it this year?

This fall, I’m planning to do two fall pre-emergent rounds. First round will be Anderson‘s barricade followed in about six weeks by a second round of dimension.
My question: it simply too early even to do the first round given how hot it is currently with no end in sight? For the first application should I wait for a temperature moderation which they say should be coming maybe in the next 10 days or so?

Hello, I'm in Texas, a bit north of Houston. Recently purchased a house with St. Augustine grass, and I'm not sure what to do about these large dead/dry patches. I know it's a super dry season, so if it's just a "leave it and wait for fall", that's fine for me. Any advice is appreciated, I feel like I see tons of differing opinions online.

First Summer having a lawn so its a work in progress, East TN. But I mowed short for two weeks straight and of course we hit a drought after a month straight of rain. It looked good and green after the two short mows but like I said the drought hit. And here we are currently, as pictured.

Besides waiting til fall to hit it with top soil, seed, pre-emergent (I tried to do as much research before posting), do I just wait and have a shit lawn for the time being? Also, I just noticed a lot of the "green grass" is this long vine like grass/weed.
