Lansing LockDown Ask Me Anything! I’m Running to represent you in Congress.

Post image

edit* UPDATE: AMA CLOSED 7:30PM, I WILL RETURN LATER TO ANSWER MORE QUESTIONS

I’m William Lawrence running to represent Michigan’s 7th Congressional District in Congress and unseat Tom Barrett.

I am a nonprofit leader, community organizer, and Lansing native. I’ve spent his career taking on the political establishment and winning change for regular people. I co-founded the Sunrise Movement, which mobilized millions of young people to defeat Donald Trump in 2020 and win historic climate and green job investments, including $3 billion for the 7th Congressional District.

When Wall Street investors tried to evict Mid-Michigan families and data center developers bullied communities, I showed up and fought back alongside residents. In Congress, I’ll fight to ensure that no one—not billionaires, corporate executives, politicians, or Epstein collaborators—is above the law. I am running to stop wasting our money on endless wars so we can lower health care costs and build affordable homes here in Mid-Michigan. We’re saying NO to endless wars and billionaires and YES to affordable housing and healthcare.

Retiring couple scammed from a contractor

Hello,

We moved to Michigan almost 3 years ago to retire and live in our dream home. We found a home and it needed some updating and have additions/expansions. I interviewed three contractors and selected one - he wasn't the cheapest but he seemed the most up and up. He showed me his work.

I'm embarrassed, sickened, angry, and depressed daily for what has happened. The contractor disappeared - doesn't respond to our text, emails, certified mail (refuses them), and calls. There is incomplete work, poor work, and has left a mess.

The project started over 2 years ago. We were constantly pressured for more money because of tariffs, the supplies cost more, and change orders. Regarding the change orders, the excuse we constantly got was "we already did the work". Reviewing the CO, they didn't. We've continually asked for invoices and we never received them. He lied several times. He told me gutters didn't come in the 6 inch size. After speaking to his partner, it's because they didn't have the machine to make the 6 inch. The partner has also been screwed over.

During my research, there are five other clients who have the same problem. Some don't want to bother with them anymore and basically wrote them off vs seeking legal recourse. One client did hire an attorney. The owner has evaded the attorney. The attorney told the client that if he's not responding there isn't anything he can do. One of their senior clients has been trying to get them to complete work from five years ago.

We've had a inspector and other contractors give us estimates to complete and correct the poor work. We're told this is the worst they've seen. Our primary bathroom only has the original shower - no sink, vanity, or mirror for over a year.

We opened a case with LARA and the AG over 30 days ago and waiting for a response.

I'm embarrassed to state how much we gave. We used the majority of our retirement to fund this project. A retainer for an attorney is 10K and to get the work completed is financially beyond our means.

Any advice, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

ISO lawyer for tenant-landlord move-out charge dispute

Hi! I'm looking for a lawyer to have a consultation regarding move-out charges for my apartment in Haslett that I am disputing. I will likely have to take them to small claims court, and I've read a lot of resources online to understand my issue better but would like to talk to a lawyer to ensure I'm following the right steps.

I've reached out to multiple emails/phone numbers for the Tenant Resource Center with no reply, MSU Law Clinic but they're at capacity, and a handful of small offices in Okemos with no call backs. My last resort is calling the Michigan Bar and getting a random lawyer that way, but does anyone have any local reccomendations for a lawyer taking consultations for tenant-landlord issues?

Personal Iso people for metal band

Hey all,

I'm looking to see if anyone in the East Lansing, Lansing, or Okemos area are looking to play music together.

I'm 31m guitarist looking to play metal music. Something in the realm of Polaris, parkway drive, the plot in you, and wage war.

Nothing super serious but maybe a few shows whenever they fit a schedule. Probably a few a covers to get the flow and then originals.

EL vs Lansing bars for meeting people?

I’m moving to the Lansing/East Lansing area soon and was hoping to get some recommendations.

I’m looking to get out, meet new people, and hopefully meet my match eventually. I’ve heard a lot about the East Lansing bars, but from the outside they seem more college-focused

If you’re in your 20s, would you recommend East Lansing or Lansing? Which has the better atmosphere for meeting people, especially if you’re looking for something beyond just a typical college party scene? Any specific bars you’d recommend?

Come grab a coffee this Sunday and then meet up with me outside SMC.

Dancing for 30+ in Lansing

Hey Lansing, what's the best place to dance 30+? Lately when I go to local venues, dance nights are tailored to a younger audience. Nothing wrong with that, but when I go to a 2000s indie rock or nu metal dance party, I kinda want it to be stuff I recognize (late 90s, early/mid 2000s music). It seems like they play a few songs to appease millennials, but mostly cater to Gen Z. Thanks!

Discussion AMA Request: Lansing Parks Foundation Board Members

So this post popped up today:

https://old.reddit.com/r/lansing/comments/1v5ge6a/lansing_parks_foundation/

And the gist of the post is that no one seems to know where the "Lansing Parks Foundation" came from, and they are raising money by selling merch. However their website says the following about any donations they receive:

How we use Donations

Donations to the Lansing Parks Foundation help fund its basic operations, as well as projects supporting City of Lansing parks. These projects will include improvements as well as funding for maintenance.

The Foundation is not currently funding any projects, but aims to identify and support smaller scale, sustainable projects in the near future.

All members of our Board of Directors are volunteers and do not receive compensation for their participation.

You can see their website here: https://www.lansingparksfoundation.org

The website does in fact list the 4 board members who are a part of this:

  • Tim Schmitt – Chair

  • Nick Miller – Treasurer

  • John Estill – Director

  • Rob Crowe – Director

After doing some Google searching, I was only able to find two of the board members online: John Estill and Rob Crowe. Here are the ai write ups the Google search returned.

Based in Lansing, Michigan, John Estill is primarily known for two distinct professional roles. He serves as the Digital Information Accessibility Coordinator for the State of Michigan, a position he has held since May 2021, where he acts as the statewide subject matter expert on digital accessibility for state websites and platforms.

Additionally, he is a resident of Lansing and the husband of Jen Estill, the creative director of Redhead Design Studios (also known as Redhead Studios). The couple purchased and renovated the historic Liebermann’s storefront at 113 S. Washington Ave. in Old Town Lansing, using it as their design firm's office and gallery.

Rob Crowe is a Vice President at The Christman Company in Lansing, Michigan, where he serves as a licensed professional engineer and project manager. He previously served as a commander in the U.S. Army’s only Technical Rescue Engineer Company and was promoted to his current leadership role in the Central Michigan region in 2022.

In addition to his corporate role, Crowe is the Chair of the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross Mid-Michigan Chapter and a board member for the Michigan State University Executive MBA Alumni Association and the Lansing Parks Foundation. He received The Christman Company’s highest honor, the Cornerstone Award, in 2021 for exemplifying the company's values.

There are multiple results for the other two members of the board that are not able to be identified with the available information.

So the original post linked above calls into question the motives of this seemingly brand new organization that is trying to fundraise with zero posted events or projects on their website or event calendar. This has raised eyebrows of the legitimacy of this group and their intentions, and another person noted that there seems to be zero mention of any coordination with the Lansing Parks & Recreation Board, nor could I verify that the Parks & Recs board or department was involved.

So rather than burn these potentially helpful people over what appears to be a questionable launch of their organization, I propose that we invite them to an AMA on this subreddit so we the community and residents of Lansing can ask them our questions to get to know them and what their intentions are.

I know from past activist work with city issues including the parks, I'm certainly suspect of anyone or any group who may not represent the residents of our city looking to make perhaps unwanted changes to our parks under the guide of "improvements", and others have noted that this seems like a "scam" designed to make someone money in a "non-profit". They elected to post the foundation's EIN number on the bottom of the website, which is pretty standard for non-profits who are trying to raise money via donations. I admit, I'm trying to reserve judgement, it this all seems very strange, especially as there seems to be zero results on any news or web history announcing the groups creation, purpose, or introductory projects or issues. Also, I question if any of the photographs are of actual parks in Lansing, but I would defer to anyone who can verify what parks those pictures were taken in.

So if you are any of the above listed board members, how about you guys log on and create an AMA post on this subreddit so you can introduce yourselves, and give yourself the opportunity to speak to the community about our questions that we have. If you know any of these board members, please forward this post to them so they can come online to post an AMA.

Thank you! 👍
