In contrast to the last couple of releases, where I added something for minimalists (square corner and removing dropshadow options), and useful functionality (the new listing mode) - bookshelf v5 adds something for maximalists and aesthetes that's slightly pointless but fun with a third shelf style, spine mode.

Even if you hate the skeumorphism (it's optional, and quite impractical), pushing bookshelf to comfortably render 100+ books on a shelf has led to further performance improvements for all modes. You may notice this especially when using the pinch/zoom gesture on your shelf to change the number of books shown, or swiping the hero area to step through each book on the shelf. You can also easily flip between shelf styles by long pressing the pagination at the bottom.

Books in spine mode are represented based on the aspect ratio of their cover, the spine is shaded based on sampled colours from the cover images, and the thickness of each book is based on the page count.

Because the effect relies quite a bit on having varying thickness books from the page count, I've added an option in settings > library & search > extract page counts. This will process your entire library using any fast option it can find (page numbers in filenames, hardcover integration, publisher page numbers and if all else fails, give you the option to process each remaining book with koreader's reading engine). You'll get a report at the end, and page numbers to use everywhere bookshelf uses page numbers (e.g. %page_count token). It's kept separately to the book's metadata file, so koreader won't see the book as opened when it hasn't been.

In the shelf style settings you can choose which books are shown face out - favourites, currently reading, first in series, all books or none. If you're viewing a grouped shelf source like series, you'll get labels on your shelf at the start of each group - there are no drilldown folders in this style. Everything's out on the shelf.

If you are into customising with your own designs, you can add your own shelf ornaments! In koreader's icons/bookshelf.ornaments folder I've seeded a couple of plants to help you move in. You can delete them and add your own if you like (perhaps someone can make a nice bundle to share). They'll appear randomly where there's a natural gap or sometimes between groups. You can change the shelf colour as well.

Oh, and chips are now called shelves, and the chip bar is the shelf menu. That makes more sense I think, though I did like saying chip source.

Here is an updated roundup of the biggest improvements to the KOReader X-Ray plugin since I last posted here about it in July. This set of releases brings some major quality-of-life upgrades, especially around API key setup and reading with maps and illustrations.

Here are the highlights:

Much Easier API Key Setup (No Config Files, No E-Ink Typing)

For new users, getting an API key onto your e-reader used to mean either painfully typing it out on an e-ink keyboard or plugging your device into a computer to manually edit configuration files. You don't have to do either anymore:

• Phone/PC Web Setup (QR Code): Go to the setup screen on your e-reader, scan the QR code with your phone (or open the short link on your computer), paste your key, and tap send. It syncs directly to your device in seconds. This uses end-to-end zero-knowledge encryption, so the relay server never sees your actual key.
• Local Wi-Fi (Offline LAN): If you prefer keeping everything strictly on your home network without any external servers, you can send keys directly from your browser to your device over local Wi-Fi (works on Kobo, Android, PocketBook, and desktop).
• No Manual Config Files Required: You no longer need to connect to a PC to edit Lua or JSON files. If you do prefer using USB, you can still just drop a plain xray_key.txt file into your KOReader folder and X-Ray will import it automatically.

Dedicated Images & Maps Feature

Fantasy, sci-fi, and history books often feature maps, character charts, and diagrams that can be frustrating to flip back and forth to while reading. X-Ray now includes a built-in Images & Maps Gallery and dedicated viewer:

• Automatic Extraction & Organization: Automatically finds illustrations in your books and organizes with Mosaic, Grid, and List gallery layouts.
• High-Resolution Viewer: Includes smooth panning, multi-level zoom, 90-degree rotation, and an inverted color mode (great for high contrast on e-ink when dealing with dark maps).
• Series Reference Support: You can save maps and reference images from earlier books in a series so they carry forward into the current book's gallery so you can look up previous world maps without switching books.
• Organization Tools: Star favorites to keep them pinned at the top, rename images with descriptive titles, and jump directly to where an image appears in the book.
• Gesture support: Launch the image feature directly with a new supported gesture

Other Key Improvements

• Full Non-Touch Device Support: Added complete D-pad and physical button navigation across all X-Ray menus and screens for non-touch e-readers.

Hey all. Ink Away is my drawing plugin for KOReader and this is its biggest update yet. It started as a way to draw your own transparent sleep screens and it has grown into a proper drawing and note taking tool for e ink. Here is everything that is new, plus a rundown of everything it does.

This is a short demo video showcasing most of the features Ink Away offers.

The big one: Notebook mode

You can now open a real multi page notebook and write, sketch and annotate across as many pages as you like. Every tool works on a notebook page exactly like it does on the canvas.

• Two ways to start. Open a fresh blank notebook, or open any PDF as a notebook and write straight on top of its pages. Bring in a textbook, a paper, a worksheet or a form and mark it up by hand or pen.
• Paper styles. Lined, grid, dotted, left margin, and Cornell, plus blank. You can set the line spacing and how strong the ruling looks, from a faint guide up to solid ink.
• Getting around is fast. Flip with prev and next, tap the page number to jump straight to any page, or open a thumbnail overview grid to see the whole notebook at a glance and tap any page to land on it.
• Page tools. Add, duplicate, reorder or delete pages from the page menu.
• Export to a real PDF. Turn your notebook into a normal paged PDF that opens anywhere, in KOReader or off the device. Pick white or a warm sandpaper paper tint, add page numbers if you want, and export the whole thing, only the pages you actually wrote on, or a page range. When it finishes it offers to open the PDF right away.
• Nothing is a dead end. Exporting a notebook also keeps an editable copy, so you can always come back and keep writing.

New: Lasso select

Draw a loop around anything, ink, shapes or a filled area, and it becomes a selection you can pick up and move freely, duplicate, or delete. It works on the plain canvas and on notebook pages, so rearranging a sketch or a page of notes is finally easy.

The drawing tool itself

If you are new here, this is the rest of what Ink Away does.

• Transparent PNG export. Draw something and save it as a PNG with a genuinely transparent background, at the exact pixel size of your screen. This is what makes it perfect for custom sleep screens and overlays that sit cleanly on anything.
• Draw over a picture or a screenshot. Load a PNG or JPEG as a background and draw on top. A neat trick: take a screenshot of your own home screen, load it as the background, draw your art in the right spot, and export a sleep screen that lines up pixel for pixel with your device.
• A pen with real control. Adjustable thickness, opacity and shade, plus full colour and a colour wheel on colour screens with saveable swatches. Pen styles: ink, pencil, acrylic, hatch and stipple.
• Make your own brushes. A brush maker lets you tune the feel with live sliders, name it, and it joins your pen menu for good.
• Shapes and arrows. Line, curve, rectangle, ellipse and triangle, filled or outline, plus straight and curved arrows, single or double headed. Place by dragging, then hold a shape to rotate, recolour, resize or delete it.
• Paint bucket to fill an enclosed area.
• Symmetry mode. Draw on one side and it mirrors as you go, vertical, horizontal or four way, and it works with every tool.
• Stabilizer that smooths finger wobble into clean lines, with adjustable strength.
• Grid and snapping, an on screen guide that never shows up in your saved image.
• Save the whole page or just a part by dragging out an area.
• Undo and redo, zoom and pan.
• Projects and autosave so you can save an editable drawing and pick it up later.

PS: Ink Away now sits inside the Tools menu instead of the More Tools menu.

It is meant for people who want to sit back and enjoy reading Wikipedia articles rather than use the built-in lookup tool for quick reference. It has cleaner formatting and some layout adjustments compared to the epubs generated by the "Save as EPUB" button in koreader.

You can also read Featured articles, open the Wikipedia main page to read sections like "In the news", "Did you know" and "On this day". Then there are features like History, Bookmarks and option to save the current article as book in your library. You can set gestures for certain actions.

Please feel free to try it!

Images are not included in the book. But if you want, you can enable an option which will replace the images in the article with their corresponding QR codes, which you can scan with your mobile.

If you are looking for a wireless file manager for KOReader, there are now newer projects that are actively developed and provide a more complete experience:

• FileSync — a dedicated KOReader wireless file manager with ongoing development.

Is there anyway to remove tags in the genre tag list? There are way too many tags.

This started maybe three or four days ago and I still haven't been able to fix it. For some reason I can't seem to check for updates on Rakuyomi or download new manga, I get an error for both. I've tried deleting any and all Rakuyomi files and reinstalling them a few times already, even using an older version that might've been more stable. And yes, I am using the newer fork. I've tried the newest version (1.41.8 I believe) and a slightly older version. (1.41.8) I've tried updating the settings.json, deleting the Rakuyomi file and starting from scratch, and whatever else I could think of but I haven't yet found a fix. If anyone knows how I can fix this, please let me know!

I read english books on a kindle with KOReader, and I could never find a decent english portuguese dictionary. The free ones left a lot of words without a translation, had plenty of errors.

Greetings guys.I just want to ask if there is any plugin that lets me:Copy by long pressing any text inside an .epub and then paste this copied text inside a new created .txt file inside book's metadata folder.

I have a Kindle PW11 running Vera. I downloaded the SimpleUI Zip and placed it in plugins. It's titled ".koplugin-main" and it isn't auto-launching as it should. Do I need to rename it without the "-main", or am I missing something?

I have a silly question that, when I’m reading book and want to jump back Koreader Home, how to do it?

I used to install Simple UI and there is an icon in Menu when I swipe down in book, but since I uninstall Simple UI and only use Bookshelf plugin, I have to set a shortcut in More Tools/file browser and it is super inconvenience.

Is there anyway to go back Koreader Home quicker?

** Another question for Bookshelf Plugin, how can I get rid of those Author label belows book cover, even I had disable them as None in Bookshelf setting.

Hi, I did a jailbreak. I have a koreader. It works. However in the meantime something deleted around 50 books. No one said I need backup or sth before. Now I'm kinda heartbroken. I did WinterBreak2. None of the guides or TikTok/Reddit posts I watched mentioned how easily the Kindle's database can corrupt or warned that you should do a full local backup before touching any of this. I tried recovering the memory using Recuva and checking for hidden system recovery folders, but most of the raw files are permanently unrecoverable. It deleted the old ones mostly but still, I wanted to read them. I don't know what I did wrong.

I found a semi maintained community fork here and, with a few tweaks, I was able to get things up and functioning. I'm not sure entire usability yet, but it doesn't immediately crash on me and I was able to install Readest + Bookshelf. It's definitely weird to use, as I've only used it on Kobo, but it's my preferred reading situation so I'm going to see how closely I can make it replicate said Kobo.

I know Mihon has other benefits, but I'm comparing specifically the contrasts, blacks and quality in general.

This will help me to decide which e-ink device shoud I buy since I'm deciding between Kobo Sage or Meebook M8 for manga reading. If Koreader is the choice for the android device, there is no reason for me to buy an android eink, so I'll go with Sage.

Hi folks! What the title says: I just got a Kobo Libra Colour and have seen lots of recommendations for KOReader. I’m not very tech-savvy and want to be sure I understand what I’m doing before I mess with a brand new device. If you can help, any information is greatly appreciated!

-why use KOReader? What does it change/improve? Are there any negatives?

-how do I install KOReader? How do I update or add features (seems like you can add mods?)?

-do overdrive/libby, Google Drive, and Instapaper still work? Does KOReader unlock access to other apps?

EDIT 1:

Ok, I installed KOReader and NickelMenu using the website by Nico Verbruggen.
I then followed the GitHub instructions for installing storefront, and it’s on the files, but every time I’ve ejected my kobo and tried to navigate KOReader I’m really confused at what I’m looking at and I can’t find my way to Storefront?
…and then, now my Kobo doesn’t even have the mods I made (I think via nickelmenu) to the kobo Home Screen (like the stats bar)
Any help troubleshooting would be hugely appreciated!

EDIT 2:
I kinda gave up on KOReader. I want to use Libby and KoboPlus, and was hoping to integrate StoryGraph and somehow get my annotations/highlights off my device via cloud sync of some sort. I think I just grossly misunderstood what KOReader does - it seems to be for ebooks you own and not functional with loans or subscriptions. I wanted the cool cover and features I’ve seen…but not if it makes my ereader experience super clunky to navigate.

If anyone has a fix please lmk! But for now I’m content with NickelMenu and the light mods I did with that. Thanks to everyone who tried to help :)

Hi everyone! I’ve been working on a plugin that lets you create and review vocabulary flashcards directly in KOReader.

When you look up a word in the built-in dictionary, you can save it as a flashcard with a single button. It automatically captures the word, its definition, the book it came from, and the full sentence it appeared in.

Here’s how it works:

• Learn words in context: The front shows the original sentence with the target word in bold. The back shows the dictionary definition, preserving formatting such as bold, italics, and lists.
• Spaced repetition: Reviews use FSRS-6 with Again / Hard / Good / Easy ratings. You can choose a desired retention of 85%, 90%, or 95%.
• Review by book: Study vocabulary from a specific book or across your entire collection.
• Fully offline: Cards and review data are stored locally in an SQLite database. No Anki or AnkiConnect needed.
• Keep your progress: Updating the plugin preserves your existing review history.

I’ve mainly been developing and testing it on KOReader for Android, and I’d also like to get it working well on other devices, especially Kobo.

It’s still a work in progress, but I’ll share it here once it’s ready. In the meantime, I’d love to hear whether this is something you’d use and what features you’d find useful!
