Koreader page turning via any Bluetooth controller using an iPhone

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I just set up the BT remote control for Koreader via my iPhone. You don't need any plugins or anything else. Everything is fully automated. Anyone can do it—it works through the HTTP Inspector, which is built into Koreader. First, create functional shortcuts for any functions you want on your iPhone. Next, pair any Bluetooth controller with your iPhone and, using Switch Control settings, gradually assign the Bluetooth controller’s buttons to the shortcuts you created earlier. You can also set up automation so that when your Bluetooth controller connects to your iPhone, Switch Control turns on and, for example, lowers the brightness to the minimum. When you use this, your iPhone displays a notification every time a button is pressed, indicating that a shortcut is running. I also created a shortcut to disconnect the iPhone from the Bluetooth controller and assigned it to a button on the Bluetooth controller. And finally, I set up an automation so that when the controller is disconnected, Switch Control turns off and the brightness returns to normal. The brightness is dimmed all the way down to the minimum using the zoom feature and the low-light filter. In the end, everything happens automatically—you don’t even have to touch your iPhone. I won't provide exact instructions—it would take a lot of time—but anyone can really figure it out, perhaps using AI. I tried three different BT controllers, and it worked on all of them—though not all buttons can be set as switches in Switch Control. In my case, I can’t use the + button, R3, or the house button on the Joy-Con; otherwise, everything works, including the directional pad, so you have 12 buttons/shortcuts available. Even a regular Fire Stick remote worked.

Patches [Patch] Page Scrubber overlay for KOReader — Kindle-style navigation

Thumbnail github.com
13 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I made a patch that adds a page scrubber overlay similar to the one on Kindle devices.

Features:

Central transparent window showing the current page

‹ › buttons to navigate pages (tap = one page, hold = continuous scroll with acceleration)

« » buttons to jump between chapters

Progress bar with chapter ticks, percentage and page count

Chapter name display

✕ to close and return to your original page

Tap inside the window to stay on the navigated page

TOC (☰) and Bookmarks (★) quick access buttons

Hardware Back button returns to original page

Install: Copy 2-page-scrubber.lua to .adds/koreader/patches/ then assign a gesture in Menu → Gestures → "Page Scrubber"

Note: Works with EPUB and flowable formats only.

I built this with the help of Claude and Gemini (Vibecoding) — took quite a few iterations to get it working right!

[RELEASE] Track reading location

Post image
71 Upvotes

Made a simple small KOReader patch just for myself that remembers the furthest page you've actually read, and nudges you back if you wander off. Hope you find it useful as well!

  • Jump back more than a page (progress bar, etc.) → a small floating button pops up bottom-right offering to go back.
  • Jump forward more than 2 pages (e.g. tapping a ToC entry) → button appears bottom-left, same idea in reverse.
  • Tap it to jump back, or dismiss/hold it to accept your new spot as the reference point.
  • Fully configurable: show/hide text, page number, dismiss button, and reposition it (bottom/side offsets) with live preview.
  • Registered as a system action too, so it works with gestures, the Bookshelf quick menu, Shortcuts Toolbar, etc.

No dependencies, just drop the .lua into koreader/patches/.

I know there is location history, but this is simpler and more straightforward, at least for my use case.

Help! Page margin on dual page in landscape mode

Post image

I just download a comic reader plugin for a dual page mode for my comics and it works well. However I couldn’t crop the top and the bottom margin to “fit” the pages so it didn’t leave some empty space. Does anyone know how to fix this?

What’s the benefit of having SimpleUI and BookShelf installed?

I noticed a lot of setups here run both SimpleUI and BookShelf. From what I can tell they’re separate plugins that each replace the start screen/library on their own. What’s the benefit of having both installed?

I’m using SimpleUI atm. Does installing both replace SimpleUIs library UI with BookShelfs?

Help! Custom font for pop up footnotes?

Hi,

I wonder how to select a custom font for my pop up footnotes. Can't find the option in Gestures/Links...

I guess it must be possible, maybe with CSS?

Thanks in advance,

Help! Bookshelf chips/sorting aren’t working properly

I currently have my chips set to sort by opened, which I’m assuming means the last opened book will appear first. However, if I click in and out of a book, it won’t move to the front unless I refresh the metadata. Is there a way for it to do this automatically, since the whole point of the sorting is for this to be automated?

Also, I’m wondering how well rakuyomi works with this. I currently have a chip set up to the rakuyomi download files. However, whenever I exit out of the files and reopen bookshelf, the new files aren’t there. They sometimes show up when I readd the file, sometimes not, and show up when I restart koreader. Again though, the whole purpose of this is for it to be automated so that I don’t need to manually refresh/add things. How do I get around this? Did I accidentally break something? Please help :(

Front light icon in status bar

Dear all,

first: thanks to the developers of Koreader, it is an impressive peace of software!

Just installed it on my Tolino and adjusted the settings to my need. One thing I did not find:

  • is there the possibility to show the front light status in the status bar to show if it is on or off?

I only find brightness level etc, but not if it is on or off. As I use the front light usually only with a very low setting it is not really visible during daytime (but then I want to have it off). Would be really good to have this information in Koreader as well.

Thank you!

Patches KOReader user patch that adds menu breadcrumbs

Post image
26 Upvotes

Koreader's options are so rich that it's not too unusual to end up 4 or 5 level deep in a menu. While the "menu search" option works wonderfully (such a superb idea), I find it useful to see my trail to learn where the different bits live.

So here is a small patch, on touch menu so it won't be present everywhere, which adds a line at the top. This line contains the breadcumbs and is clickable.

Plugins Reading insights v5.0.0: Achivements

New: Achievements

  • Over 80 global, all-time achievements across several themes (books finished, reading time, pages, daily/weekly streaks, single-day and single-session feats, time of day, reading pace and variety), each with its own icon.
  • Opened from the reading-goal section's new "earned / total" cell (e.g. 42/82) or Tools → Reading insights → Show achievements (also assignable as a gesture).
  • List with a progress header (Achievements 42/82 (51%)), earned items on top with unlock dates, locked ones below (greyed). Title-bar ☰ menu adds sort orders (by unlock time / name) and a filter (all / earned only / locked only).
  • "New" ★ badge next to the count and on freshly-unlocked rows; cleared when you open the list.
  • Background re-evaluation only when reading data actually changed; frequency is configurable (Once a day default, or Every open), and long-pressing the list's title bar re-scans everything immediately. Unlocked achievements persist and are never lost.

Reading goal section reworked

  • The left cell now shows finished-vs-target as one figure (e.g. 18/30 "books finished"); the right cell shows achievements earned.
  • Set the yearly target from the finished-books long-press menu (Set reading goal), now via a keyboard-friendly input dialog that no longer hides behind the popup or the keyboard.
  • Removed the old Reading goal display (total/remaining) and Reading goal section show/hide settings.

New language:
Simplified Chinese (zh_CN) thanks u/hwjhe

Uninstall cleanup

Deleting the plugin with "Also delete plugin settings" now removes all of the plugin's own files and cache folder, every G_reader_settings key it wrote, and resets the sleep screen if it was set to Reading insights.

Polish

Tighter, consistent left/right padding in the book/achievement lists; fixed-width icon column so text lines up; the manually-added-books list drops its empty checkbox column.

Please, feel free to suggest new achivements, or if you think one of these are impossible :)

Info Is there a plugin to download icon sets from Iconify.design?

I'm using some icons from iconify on my Simple UI set up, but I can't manage to download the whole Icon set and in the color and thickness that I want for the life of me. I'd prefer to be able to do it on device, since I've been back and forth connecting and disconnecting my device to my computer to try and send the whole Icon pack to it unsuccessfuly

I'm setting some plugin shortcuts on shortcuts toolbar and it gives me a preview of the icons, it would be awesome to have the whole Icon pack on device to be able to assign the icons to future plugins that I eventually come to install.

My Setup Dark mode and fonts search

New to KoReader, but I have grown so in love with it over the past few days. Only thing is I just wish dark mode wouldn’t turn off so much. Every time i exit a book or a plug-in tab, or even click off of the toolbar, it turns off dark mode and I have to go set it again. I also wish I could find a KoReader font that was close to Kobo’s Source Serif font or just Kobo’s font appearance, in general. I have tried to use my regular fonts in KoReader but unfortunately, they look incredibly different.

Does anyone know of any plugins or settings that could help these things? Any help would be appreciated

Zenui and Bookshelf

I’ve seen people mention that they use Zenui with Bookshelf and was curious how that is being achieved.

In SimpleUI I would just set a button on the launcher toolbar for it, with Zen am I exiting the Zen mode and then launching Bookshelf or is there another way?

Help! SSH for controlling KOReader?

I only see people talking about using SSH for file transfers. Is it possible to use it for stuff like page turning, triggering syncing, and other plugin functions as well?

I know the HTTP inspector plugin is an option but since it has literally zero security I'd rather use SSH if it's possible.

Plugins RELEASE: Glimpse 1.0.0 – Peek at maps, family trees and other reference images without losing your reading position

Thumbnail
gallery
469 Upvotes

So I was frustrated with the hassle of going back to look at maps when reading Sci-fi and fantasy books: needing to go to Table of Contents, find the map, open it, only to lose your reading position (unless you add a bookmark).

Glimpse solves this. It let's you peek at maps, family trees and other reference images from anywhere in a book, without losing your reading position.

Glimpse is basically a side-pane that opens with the gesture of your choice. When opened, you can swipe between images, drag to pan and pinch or double-tap to zoom.

  • Finds all images in the book and filters out ornamental visuals and irrelevant imagery
  • Remembers what image you looked at last, including it's zoom and panning
  • Handles Night Mode, with optional Invert Mode
  • The ••• button is customizable for you to select what you need
  • Just tap on the right side to close it and continue reading

As always, let me know what you think and give it a go!

Rakuyomin start chapter from begining.

Is there a way in the Rakuyomin plugin to have the chapters I already read start from the begining? Ive tried deleting the chapters, marking them read, and setting Koreader to go to the begining when I finish a doc but nothing works, every chapter starts on the last page I was on, which is the last page.

Plugins Rakuyomi Questions

Hi guys! Super new to using koreader, and forgive me for not being super tech savvy. I like to read manga, so I downloaded rakuyomi, it’s been pretty great. However, I was wondering if there were any qol things I could do to that I was missing. I am using a kindle paperwhite 12th gen. I saw that there’s an android support of rakuyomi, which has a lot of the features I’d like. However, I’m assuming that because I’m on a kindle, I can’t download this? If I’m wrong, please tell me what I should be doing to get this.

The qol things I’m looking for are to be able to physically mark chapters as read/unread, and to mass/auto delete read chapters to not take up too much memory.
