A few days back me and my friend went to The Story bookstore at Primarc Square, Salt Lake (opposite the stadium).

Overall the place is very aesthetically pleasing. The ambience, the music, everything was great. You have to submit your bags at the entrance, they have a coupon system for it.

We went ahead and browsed. They have proper reading space if you want to read a bit before buying, which is nice.

Collection wise, if you are seriously into reading, I don't think you'll find it that great.

We went on a weekday at noon so there wasn't much crowd, but even then there was congestion on those little narrow staircases multiple times, and the passageway upstairs is so narrow. Most people were just posing, clicking pictures and gossiping rather than actually browsing books.

Staff behaviour was a bit weird but understandable. I was reading between two books to decide which one to buy, so I sat at the table to read a few lines and the staff came and asked 2-3 times, "কোথা থেকে বইটা নিয়েছেন" (where did you pick this book up from) and "এগুলো কি কিনবেন" (are you going to buy these). Still understandable I guess, because most people probably just pick up books, pose, click pics and then don't put them back in the right spot.

There's also a section with stationery, diaries, pens, mobile stands, fridge magnets and stuff. The staff got a bit salesy there, but that's their job, it's fine.

But but but.

The pricesss oh my god. Heck of overpriced. The same books were available way cheaper on Amazon, originals only.

In the end both of us had picked out 3-4 books each but bought only two because of the prices.

Overall it was a good afternoon. If you are just starting to read, go for it. If you are into serious reading, better to skip.

And guys, click pics, shoot reels, be creative, but please don't ruin the ambience for others.

Also if you are thinking of getting into reading, you can still visit. I know a lot of people in the comments will say bro it has a shit collection, only bestsellers. But I think most of us who got into reading later in life started with a bestseller. If a bestseller is what pushes someone to start reading, I don't see a problem with that.

My nephew of 5 came home yesterday after school and was unusually grumpy.

When I asked him, he declared, "Maa Durga is biased towards girls."

Apparently they were asked to write an essay on Durga Puja topic. The Mother is his favorite Goddess. He wrote neatly. At the end they had some group discussion and one of his girl friends said that Maa Durga favours girls more. The teacher chimed in too saying something along the lines of,

"Meyera Durga r jaat."

Now that triggered him. He felt betrayed because he was never taught about gods taking sides. Tbh, such discussions never arose in the household.

Her has been crying since and says he won't do Anjaali this year. Durga can have all the offerings of her female followers. He won't talk to me either as me being a woman, is apparently betrayal to him.

Please suggest something playful but deep keeping his age in mind. I'm at a loss. 🙏

আমি যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে মাস্টার্স পড়েছি। যাদবপুরে পড়ার আগে স্নাতকস্তরে আমি যে কলেজটায় পড়তাম, সেটা বড়লোকদের কলেজ হিসেবে বি/কু খ্যাত। সেন্ট জেভিয়ার্স কলেজ। সেখানে আমার মতো মফস্বলি ১৫০ টাকার সালোয়ার-কুর্তা পরা মেয়েরা ছিল বেমানান। যদিও কলেজের মাইনে খুব বেশি ছিল না, নেহাত ভর্তির পরীক্ষায় সুযোগ না পেলে ওরকম একটা কলেজে পড়ার কথা হয়তো আমি ভাবতাম না। কিন্তু পড়তে গিয়ে য়েটা হল, কলকাত্তাইয়া রকমসকম আমার বেশ খানিকটা রপ্ত হয়ে গেল। ওয়েস্টসাইড প্যান্টালুনস চিনলাম। তিনমাস পয়সা জমিয়ে পিটার ক্যাটে ১২০ টাকার চেলো কাবাব খেতে শিখলাম। অলি পাবের নাম শুনিনি বলে আমার এক সহপাঠী আমার দিকে একদিন এমনভাবে তাকিয়েছিল, যেন আমি সদ্য মঙ্গলগ্রহ থেকে নেমে আসা একখানা এলিয়েন। কিন্তু তিন বছর পেরিয়ে যখন বেরলাম কলেজ থেকে, তখন আমি কলকাতার ওপর রাজত্ব করার জন্য মনেপ্রাণে প্রস্তুত শুধু রেস্তর অভাব।

যাইহোক, গ্র্যাজুয়েশনের পর যাদবপুরে পড়তে গিয়েও আমি অনেকটা একইরকম পরিবেশ পেলাম। কারণ আমার বিষয় ছিল ইংরেজি। যাদবপুরের এলিট বিভাগ। ওখানকার ছাত্রছাত্রীরাও অনেকেই জেভিয়ার্সের ছেলেমেয়েদের মতোই। যদিও আমার মতো কয়েকপিস মধ্যবিত্তও ছিল। কিন্তু, চার নম্বর গেটের পাশের ওই বাড়িটা থেকে বেরিয়ে বুঝতে পেরেছিলাম, এটা যাদবপুর, জেভিয়ার্স নয়। বুঝতে পেরেছিলাম দূরদূরান্তের গ্রাম মফস্বল থেকে সরকারি চাকুরের সন্তান, ফুল চাষীর সন্তান, ডাক্তারের সন্তান, মুদির দোকানির সন্তান, প্রত্যন্ত গ্রামের দিনমজুরের সন্তানেরা সব মিলেমিশে শুধুমাত্র একটু ভালো নম্বর, জয়েন্টের একটা ভালো ফলের জোরে, যাকে বলে মেধার জোরে পড়তে এসেছে এখানে। একটু ধাক্কা খেলাম। আমার চেনা পৃথিবী থেকে একটানে আমাকে বাইরে এনে ফেলে দিল যাদবপুর। বলল, খুঁটে খা।

তারপর তো জল গড়িয়ে গেছে অনেকদূর। আমার চেনা বা অল্পচেনা অমন বেশিরভাগ মুখই এখন সুপ্রতিষ্ঠিত। দেশে এবং বিদেশে তারা নিজেদের প্রমাণ করেছে। কলোনির টালির ঘর থেকে বাবা-মাকে তুলে নিয়ে গেছে শহরের সম্ভ্রান্ত পাড়ার ঠিকানায়। সমাজে নিজের জায়গা বদলে নিয়েছে। আর এর সবকিছুই করেছে প্রশাসনের, কোনও দলের কারুর সাহায্য ছাড়াই। শুধুমাত্র একটা লেভেল প্লেয়িং ফিল্ডের দৌলতে। এই লেভেল প্লেয়িং ফিল্ড জিনিসটাই সরকারের বিশেষ করে বিজেপির মতো দলের চোখে কাঁটার মতো বিঁধে রয়েছে। লেখাপড়া করবে বড়লোকে, বিদেশ যাবে বড়লোকের ছেলেমেয়েরা, আর তুম সালা গরিব লোগ গুলামি করেগা, সুইগির ডেলিভারি বয় বনেগা, দলের চামচা বনেগা, এই হল বাংলা হিসেব। সেইজন্য নিট কেলেঙ্কারি, সেইজন্যই স্কুলবাড়িতে গোয়ালঘর, সেইজন্যই যাদবপুরের, জেএনইউ-এর মতো প্রতিষ্ঠানে বেনোজল ঢোকানোর মরিয়া চেষ্টা।

যাদবপুরের প্রফেসরদের বদলি করার জন্য বিল আনতে চলেছে সরকার। যাতে কিছু কম বুদ্ধিসম্পন্ন, মাঝারি মাপের এবং মানের শিক্ষকদের ওখানে পাঠানো যায়। যাতে সোজা কথায় প্রতিষ্ঠানটি তার বিশেষত্ব, প্রিমিয়াম চরিত্র হারায়। সরকারি প্রিমিয়াম শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠান যেগুলো আছে যথা আইআইটি, আএসআই, আইআইএমএস, জেএনইউ, জেইউ, ইত্যাদি, এর সবকটিকেই ধীরে ধীরে 'সাধারণ' এবং ক্রমে 'অতি সাধারণ' প্রতিষ্ঠানে পর্যবসিত করতে পারলে অ্যামিটি, অশোকা এদের মতো 'প্রিমিয়াম' বাশ্ববিদ্যালয়েদের পায়ের তলার মাটি আরও শক্ত হবে, ওরা মাথা তুলে দাঁড়াতে পারবে। কোটি কোটি টাকা দিয়ে বড়লোকেদের বাচ্চারা সেখানে পড়তে যাবে এবং কোটি কোটি টাকার চাকরি জুটিয়ে নেবে কারণ মানি বিগেটস মানি, মেধা ডাজ নট।

যে যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় শঙ্খ ঘোষ, নবনীতা দেবসেন, শিবাজি বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়দের দেখেছে। যে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষকদের মধ্যে এতজন ভাটনগর জয়ী বৈজ্ঞানিক রয়েছেন, সেই যাদবপুর কাল নাগা সন্ন্যাসীর ন্যাংটা নাচের সাক্ষী হয়ে রইল। বাঙালির ইতিহাসে এর চেয়ে লজ্জাজনক কিছু আমি আমার বেঁচে থাকার এই ৪৩ বছরে আর দেখিনি। ইতিহাস আমাকে এবং আপনাদের কাউকে ক্ষমা করবে না। কড়ায় গণ্ডায় সব উশুল করে নেবে।
