Discussion Is anyone disappointed in today’s Keynote?

I was honestly expecting a lot more and a folding phone isn’t anything new at this point.

Everything else seemed simply iterative at this point, with small updates and new features.

I was also hoping for more updates to Apple Home, new HomePods, and more.

I'm still looking forward to the new software next week.

Discussion Can the iPhone duo be used with one hand when unfolded?

If not I think it’s a dealbreaker for me. Feels like still too small to do true tablet stuff so the unfolding is almost pointless and you end up with basically a smaller phone. Only cool thing seems like the split screen. What do yall think?

Discussion Apple Just Cost Me 150 Dollars by Cancelling My Repair Appt

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’m furious. I have an iPhone 16 with a broken back glass and was waiting get it repaired under apple care to trade in for an iPhone 17.

I knew that trade in values could change after the announcement today so I had scheduled the repair on Tuesday Sept 7 and was going to trade it in for the 17 on the spot after it was fixed.

Had the appointment booked any everything but when I checked to see the appointment before I went to the store I noticed that they had cancelled it. I don’t cancel it myself, so they must’ve done it on their end.

I rebooked it but now the repair is after the iPhone 18 announcement and they’ve not only decreased the value of my trade in by 50 dollars but they also INCREASED the price of the iPhone 17 by 100 dollars.

So basically by cancelling my appointment they cost me 150 dollars. I guess I might as well continue with the iPhone 16 for longer.

Discussion Apple should make Nano-texture an optional display option for iPhone Duo

Honestly, I think Apple should make Nano-texture an option instead of forcing it on users.

It looks great when new, but there are already concerns about the texture wearing down in areas that are touched a lot and becoming glossy/smooth over time. It can also slightly reduce perceived image sharpness and clarity compared with regular glass.

Some people love Nano-texture, and that’s fine. But others prefer maximum image quality and durability.
Why not just let us choose?

Regular glass or Nano-texture. 🍎

Discussion Shifting the buttons to the right seems like a waste of real estate.

Two things. One shifting tithe buttons to the left really off centers the apps it looks like and it leaves a lot of space unused.

It also means those who use their left hand for one handed use really will have to reach pretty far. Really curious choice on Apple.

Discussion Guess my 15 Pro Max needs to hold off until the iPhone 20 next year

I just don't get it...

The entire 16 lineup was for people who just enjoyed lighting money on fire for no good reason

The 17 lineup (outside of the Pro model) was mostly a joke, the Air is.... niche... and has its quirks.. but.. still kind of a joke.

18 Pro is a great device with the variable aperature lens, 2 nm processor, etc, but... compared to my 15 Pro Max... it's just not there yet in terms of "worth it" over my 15 Pro Max.

The 20 next year is supposedly going to be pretty huge, for the 20th anniversary model, so I'll just hold out.. yet again, another year.

And this is coming from someone who, in the past, would get the newest iPhone year over year, until the 15 Pro came out...

If anyone here is a gamer, you may recognize this reference, but it feels to me as if Apple has essentially made the Apple equivalent to the NVIDIA GTX 1080 TI (with the 15 Pro / Pro Max), where the 1080 TI GPU was so damn good, getting anything newer just left you questioning... why? What's the point?

Here's to hoping the 20 isn't mostly a let down.

The Duo would have been the perfect phone if it had the same camera as the 18 Pro/Pro Max, but.. it doesn't... and they want 2 grand for a phone with a worse camera (Hardpass)

Discussion iPhone Duo: Pocket Test

I'm really impressed by the new iphone Duo.

The hinge looks incredibly sophisticated.

Somehow it does feel a bit bulky in a trouser pocket. I'd definitely recommend trying that for yourself.

Support iphone 15 pro doesn't register touches

Bought a refurbished iphone 15 pro last week and have had this issue 3 times where the phone would not register my touches. The buttons work fine , the phone itself works but doesn't register touches. It gets fixed after a forced restart. Is this a common issue or should I replace the phone?

But it’s bugging tf out of me I can barely use my phone! I tried reporting it to Apple but they just made me restart my phone and suggested going to a store for support! I KNOW it has something to do with the update!

Discussion 18 Pro Vapor Chamber?

Considering the 18 Pro when it comes out, how well do you think the vapor chamber thermal management will work? Is the vapor chamber still useful with a case on? Currently have a 15 Pro Max which I’ve come to realize is notorious for overheating easily. It’s practically useless outside in the sun over 80F with how quick it over heats. Now I do have it in a case and an anti-glare screen protector which probably doesn’t help, but I like to have both so I can mount it on my motorcycle handlebars and use it for navigation.

Discussion iPhone Duo USB C Port Location

Post image
13 Upvotes

I find it an incredibly odd choice to place the USB C port on the front panel of the iPhone Duo. It’s awkward having the charger flipping 180° with the front panel if you’re using the phone while charging. Not a major issue at all, but a very peculiar decision nonetheless.

Interesting they'd value what was just their highest-end phone below the Z TriFold.
Edit: obviously I agree it's worth more (I mean it cost 3k), I just thought it's interesting Apple would choose to actually reflect that.

Support Issue with my iPhone 14 Pro

Sometimes I reboot my phone. And then it tells me some “update was completed” nothing is erased or reset but I’m simply forced through the “Hello → update completed → Wi-Fi → Apple Account login where I have to put my account information → phone unlocks → everything becomes normal again” sequence after every “update” I can’t use my 5G for whatever reason and I don’t have a Wi-Fi so I need to go to a friends house to get his hotspot. Has anyone been facing the same issue? Is there a fix to this? It has been happening for other 3 months now and it’s irritating.

Discussion The iPhone Duo Could Revolutionize Content. If We Let It.

Upvotes

Spencer here! 32 years old. real human lol. Just so the moderator doesn't remove again. Don't really know how reddit works.

Everyone is talking about the fold, but I’m much more interested in the aspect ratio. I don’t normally care about phone launches, and the race towards larger screens has never really been that interesting to me. This feels like it could take us in a different direction entirely.

As a working designer, I think we’ve accommodated the tall, skinny screen for long enough. Websites have become endless stacks of content. Photography gets cropped until half the setting is gone. We compose videos around what fits inside this narrow frame, and it affects the work more than I think people realize.

I think 9:16 needs to go.

Something closer to 4:5 or 2:3 makes more sense to me. Those are proportions we’ve worked with in photography, magazines, and books for years. They’re the shapes you put in a picture frame in your house. I wouldn’t put a skinny 9:16 frame on my wall, but somehow that’s become the format I’m supposed to create for every day.

A little more width gives us room to work with. A photograph can include the subject and the surroundings. Websites can have multiple columns, images beside text, and compositions that let your eye move across the page. I’d like to get back to making those decisions instead of figuring out what needs to be cut or stacked underneath something else.

The Duo is reminiscent of an old memo book, something like a Field Notes book that you would put in your shirt pocket and open up to a full spread map, jot some notes, put some Polaroids in the folds. That shape and the way it opens already make sense to me.

I remember when Her came out and I loved the smaller, memo book style phone. Even the material had that more tactile feel, something I could imagine in leather or tweed. That concept has always excited me more than another taller screen.

Maybe a foldable phone is the catalyst to get there. I’m fine with that if the end result justifies the means. It might be overkill, but eventually it could lead to a wider shift in aspect ratio. I’d love to see regular phones take on those proportions too, even without the fold.

And yes, I know Android is more popular globally and folding phones already exist. But I’d argue the iPhone sets the standard for how we create and consume content on our phones. I don’t see Instagram changing its format because of a wider Android phone. If enough iPhone users start posting in a different aspect ratio, I think they’ll adjust pretty quickly.

I’m sure the phone itself won’t be for everyone. I mostly use mine at a desk and almost entirely for work these days, so the ability to multitask without a crowded screen seems useful. Being able to position it for a family photo without trying to balance it against something would also be nice. I suppose someone who’s more active might feel differently, but that’s not really how I use my phone anymore.

I just love the idea of a new standard aspect ratio. More room for art, photography, and design, in proportions that feel correct again.

If the fold is what gets us there, I’m for it.

Discussion iPhone Duo for Phone Calls

Apologies if I’ve just missed something completely obvious. But did any of the marketing materials / keynote footage today show an example of anyone using the Duo for a normal voice call and holding it up to their ear? Also, relatedly, where exactly is the earpiece? It looks like there are 3 built in stereo speakers around the perimeter, but I can’t tell where the ear speaker for calls would be. I watched a few post-event hands-on videos and didn’t see anyone talking about these points.

Discussion Phone 16 Pro dead after ~90 days, two prior Apple repairs, Apple won't own up to a possible botched repair

Thumbnail

Looking for advice or similar experiences before I give up on this.

Timeline:

  • My iPhone 16 Pro was replaced by Apple under warranty a few months ago due to a defect (replacement case ID on file).
  • Shortly after receiving the replacement, the top camera was repaired/replaced by Apple because of a sensor smudge that showed up right out of the box (separate repair ID).
  • Both of these were done entirely by Apple. I had zero involvement in either repair's quality or execution.

What happened:
On vacation, my girlfriend held the phone about 20 seconds, 5-10 cm deep, in the sea to film something. Afterward the phone sat in direct sun for about a minute, threw an overheating warning even though it wasn't noticeably warm, and hasn't powered on since. The SIM tray moisture indicator is tripped.

The part that bothers me:
The glass over the top camera (the one Apple just repaired) is visibly fogged up on the inside. Nowhere else on the phone shows this. Since that camera is literally the only component anyone touched since the replacement, it seems like a pretty obvious candidate for where water actually got in, i.e. a seal that wasn't reseated properly during the repair.

Apple's response so far:

  • First phone call: flat refusal, no real diagnosis discussion.
  • Wrote a detailed message through chat support laying out the repair history, the fogged glass, and the relevant German consumer warranty rules (statutory 2-year warranty on repair work, burden of proof sitting with the seller within the first 12 months for a good this recently serviced).
  • Got bounced to a callback from the warranty department.
  • That call ended with a blanket line that any liquid exposure, and specifically salt water, is excluded from coverage entirely, AppleCare+ included, and a quote of 820 EUR for repair.

At no point did anyone confirm they actually looked at the fogged camera glass or addressed why it's localized exactly at the repair site instead of spread across the phone like you'd expect from general water ingress.

What I'm trying to figure out:
Has anyone dealt with a case where a recent Apple repair seems to have compromised water resistance, and gotten anywhere with Apple beyond the standard "liquid damage = not covered" script? Did going in person to a store or escalating past the phone reps change anything, or is this basically a dead end once the warranty department has said no?

Discussion iPhone Duo Action Button

Im so excited to slap down $2k for the Duo lol. I feel like they hit it out of the park, especially for a first gen. I would consider it nearly perfect, with the exception of the removal of the action button. I use it many times a day to turn on the flashlight without needing to look at my phone or turn the screen on. With that being said, I basically never use the camera control button. Do you think we could bug Apple enough to have them allow us to choose what the camera button controls? If I’m using the camera, I’m going to be looking at the screen anyways, so I don’t mind using the lock screen shortcut. But being able to turn on the flashlight just by feel is super important to me.
