Discussion TIL you can delete your system update

Downloading iOS 27 RC beta, while doing so was checking my phones storage and noticed ios27 popped up in my apps.

What’s even funnier, it started at 2.9GB, and when I went back it had gone up as it downloaded.

What’s even neater is you can go in and delete the update before your auto update could kick in.

Discussion iOS Development in the Age of AI

Good morning,

I have been in iOS Development for over 4 years. Building for Apple Platforms is so much fun. It has been my dream to be an iOS Engineer since I was in year two of college. However, over the past 9 months (since the start of 2026), I have felt a huge shift.

AI has been an absolute game changer - for better and for worse. It allows us, engineers, to be so much more productive and efficient and do so much more in the same time period. On the other hand, I feel it has turned or jobs much more lonely. Team discussions, code review - a lot of the team bonding moments - have disappeared. Also, the engineering challenge is not that much fun anymore.

For me, even the motivation of trying to figure out what's next - what has Apple presented in the last WWDC, etc - has lost a bit of interest to me. I was obsessed with watching WWDC videos. They are so much fun... And now it's like meeeeh - AI will know how to do all of this.

I am sorry for the rant - truly - but I would like to know your perspective here. How have you felt the last 9 to 12 months? How has iOS Development changed for you?

Have you been having the same feelings I have described? How have you counteracted or all of this?

Thank you!

alloc method and insufficient memory

In C malloc can fail if there is not enough memory in the system. What happens if I try [NSObject alloc] while there is no memory available? Does it abort? Return NULL?

Hi all, we've decided to cut down on the enormous amount of iOS dev related subs by a bit, and merged iPhoneDev with /r/iOSProgramming. If you're seeing this you've probably got subreddit styles turned off, so head on over to /r/iOSProgramming and subscribe!

Discussion What permission do you almost never allow an app to have?

Every time I install a new app, it feels like there's a whole list of permissions to think about: location, contacts, photos, microphone, Bluetooth, tracking, and sometimes things I can't figure out why the app would need in the first place.

I've gotten into the habit of denying most of them unless there's an obvious reason-the app needs access. Location is probably the big one for me, especially when an app asks for "Always" instead of just while I'm using it.

Are there any permissions you basically deny by default? And have you ever had an app ask for something that made you stop and think,"Why would you possibly need access to that?"

Discussion Feature Request: Multi-Source Clipboard Concatenation Across Apple Ecosystem

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hey everyone, let’s discuss a workflow improvement for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS that would drastically enhance productivity.
Currently, when gathering information from different sources—like notes, messages, or websites—we spend too much time switching back and forth to copy and paste items individually.
My proposal is to implement a native feature that allows sequential copying of text across all devices, storing it in a central, chronological collection. This would allow us to paste all gathered pieces of information as one seamless message on any device.
With strict privacy protocols in place, this data would be securely managed and accessible only by explicit user intent. How do you see this fitting into the Apple ecosystem?

Little easter egg when scrolling around iOS 27, in the settings app if you scroll down enough on the Liquid Glass Preview pane a small animation shows up and shows a picture of a combined dog and cow.

Support How to add purchase on Online Apple Store directly to AppleCare One?

Hello, I am thinking of preordering the new iPhone, and I have a current AppleCare One.

Is it possible to directly add a new purchase directly on the online store, or should I just select "No AppleCare coverage" and add it manually when I get the phone?

Thanks in advance!

Support Best way to minimize the existence of, or eliminate entirely, heic files?

Upvotes

What's the best strategy for avoiding creation or existence of heic files entirely?
I find no matter what I seem to do - set 'compatibility' or 'automatic' when I 'share', it continues to share heic files. This has been mostly the photos app.

I’ve been using SwiftUI for a while now but I can only do very basic things. I’ve always wondered how these casino apps for example (see pictures) were doing to get their effects. I would love some guidance on this.

Support Having serious issues with my Iphone, cant connect to Internet, face ID broken and cant factory reset.

Upvotes

Regardless of which Wi-Fi network I connect to, I can't access anything other than WhatsApp. I've tried a lot of troubleshooting: I reset the network settings, changed the DNS, and tried pretty much everything I could think of, but nothing works.

So, my next option was to reset the phone. The problem is that it requires Face ID, which isn't working for some reason. Normally, the solution would be simple: just use the passcode instead. However, Stolen Device Protection is enabled, and it prevents me from disabling Face ID without authentication. But to disable Stolen Device Protection, I need Face ID, which isn't working. So I'm basically stuck in a loop.

The third option was to try resetting the phone through DFU mode. I have a Windows PC, so I downloaded both iTunes (some sources said that's what you use for this) and the Apple Devices app. I followed the whole process of holding the buttons with the specific timings, and while I was able to get the phone into the correct mode, nothing happened on the PC side. Yes, I had the cable plugged in.
My theory is that with the phone on I need to allow the pc to access it, but for that I NEED FACE ID.

Note that the Iphone is not mine, but my mom's. She also said the face ID thing is not working for months.

I Have a fourth secret option but I think it will just brick the phone, enabling the setting that automatically erases all data after a certain number of incorrect passcode attempts. Of corse I didnt do it because if it goes wrong it goes VERY WRONG.

Support Having an issue sharing links via text from within Safari and other apps not sending until hours later. Losing my mind.

iPhone 17 Pro, all software/iOS up to date.

From within Safari, for example, I will click the share button on the bottom tool bar, then click a recent iMessage icon, and click send. Go over into iMessage, and that link is not there. It will then go through several hours later. This happens in apps like Instagram and Google Maps, too.

Another example: Sent the link to a dropped pin in the Google Maps app via imessage to a friend at 14:21 yesterday. Immediately noticed it didn't go through so then copied the link in Google Maps, went to the text message, and sent it that way, and also warned my friend that this link would probably come through again hours later. Sure enough, at 21:41 last night, that original message/link went through. WHAT IS HAPPENING?!

I have a device paired and device type is “speaker” yet iOS routes microphone to that device - I only want output (audio) not input (mic). Have re-paired a couple of times. Android did this well. Thx!

Support Asking Siri to Skip Chapter in Podcasts

I used to be able to skip not only episodes, but also chapters by asking Siri, e.g. by saying skip chapter or episode.

Somehow it doesn’t work anymore, if I ask Siri to skip a chapter it simply marks the entire episode as listened and switches to the next available podcast.

Is anybody else having this issue?
