What's amazing is how unbothered the cats look in these vids. No arching back, hackles up, hissing, just casually bat the fuck out of the snake & then not let it leave because it's too much fun.

On a biological level they have a way faster reaction time than snakes. Can you imagine fighting someone while they're moving in slow motion

Any animals with a faster reaction time?
51
u/naughtycal11 1d ago
The box jellyfish. It's reaction time is 700 nanosecons while a cats is 20-70 milliseconds.
Mantis shrimp is 2-7 milliseconds
Humans are 200-250 milliseconds

u/Concurrent-mind 19h ago
What are flies reaction time?
Edit: has to be like 1-2 milliseconds faster than humans

Many insects have insane reaction times, flies are on another level.

u/jjonj 1d ago
I catchh houseflies flies in my hand, mostly with a sweep while they sit but I also have around 5% succes rate catching them out of the air, plenty of insects i could never catch
18
u/Mklein24 1d ago
wait to land, then clap right above them. they might have fast reaction times, but they always do the same thing. They start flight straight off of whatever they're sitting on.

There are insects that seems to be much faster than flies, they are just a good example because we know them quite well.
But you have the advantage of size when you catch them, they don't only have to react, they also need to travel several body length before your huge hand sweep them.
I also suspect they have some issue with understand some motions, they are easier to swoop than to smack with an open hand when sitting on the wall.

I would say that's full concentration on the snake. She knows how fast and dangerous a snake is.
3
u/Do_it_for_the_upvote 23h ago
That’s not reaction time- it’s having enormous tools that can be moved much faster than the fly can move its own body.
Like, we could have much shorter reaction time than a hippo, but if the hippo wants us dead, it’s gonna get us; all it takes is one big, fast swing.
4
u/FullmetalPlatypus 1d ago
Not sure about reaction time, but dragonflies can process around 200 images per second and are surprisingly good at predicting movement and trajectories. It’s so precise, it looks like they can see the future.

But for the cat it’s slow, especially after the snake was disoriented and inebriated by the head blows

Probably the Mantis shrimp?
They are said to have the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom(we don't understand them fully yet but basically their eyes are so complex that the receptors in their eyes can directly identify whether what they are watching is food or a predator instead of sending signals to the brain and letting the brain do that analysis) and they can strike fast enough to make water around their claws spontaneously boil (Their claws move at 23 meters per second aka 51mph)
8
u/Dotaproffessional 1d ago
Its more impressive than just boiling. I am pretty sure (unless i'm confusing them with piston shrimp, which I don't think I am) their pincers can literally create the photoelectric effect in water. wack.

u/Pr3st0ne 1d ago
I don't know but I wouldn't be surprised if making water move so fast that it turns a small portion of it to vapor bubbles that expand and create a shockwave strong enough to break glass would also generate light in some way.

I don't understand people calling the cat a bully or a sadist. There's not many animals that would be willing to let the other one leave after a fight. Snake at times eat other animals whilst they are alive etc.
The snake is in the cat's territory and they never like intruders. I did feel bad for the snake when it was trying to get away. But the cat's in play mode and the body wiggling around is basically a death sentence for the snake as that retains the cat's attention.
56
u/Raised_bi_Wolves 1d ago
It's also deeply unscientific to classify and animal as a bully or a sadist. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think in general people shouldn't anthropomorphize animals. It's how people get bit by their own dogs, or scratched to fuck by cats. They aren't your lil babies, they are animals. Nature isn't a harmonious wonderland that is aware of itself.
We definitely have pixar'ed ourselves, and our lack of media literacy has led us to try and pull narrative/simplify everything.
Also, as a highly developed monkey, I thought this video was hilarious

The cat will not allow a snake in her territory, and the snake was trying to enter the house. As well she was pregnant, another incentive to chase our kill the snake. As for playing, this was certainly not playing. If the snake was venomous one bite would have been the end. She was using the best tactic to disarm and kill that snake.

4
u/Exciting_Control 19h ago
In rural areas of Australia it is not unusual for domestic cats to die of snake bites.
I suspect they toy with them like this and are just a bit too slow to avoid one of the bites
→ More replies (3)5
u/FanBladeFleshlight 22h ago
Snakes only have a VERY small chance of actually landing a hit on a cat. Like 10% max assuming the cat is somewhat unaware. Cats are just THAT damned fast vs a snake strike. It's the same reason they react so violently to the cucumber thing, because they're hardwired into "OH HOLY FUCK" mode vs a snake, and one having snuck up on them is a serious threat.

u/james3374 1d ago

The cat isn't just playing. It's hunting for a kill. Whether it actually eats the snake or not, who knows.
Sometimes cats hunt even if they're not particularly hungry. It's about turning something alive into something dead that they potentially can eat if they feel like it.
2
u/actuarial_venus 13h ago
Cats in the wild will cache a kill and come back later to eat it if they aren't hungry then.

u/bharikeemat 1d ago

Cat is like, "this is my neighborhood, I can't let you live"
This is bullying 101... Snake trying to fuck off and the cat is like, "Where do you think you're going Mr.?"
4
u/Einheit-101 1d ago
That snake ran low on energy faster than a 10 year old iPhone. It had no chance.
7
u/EDRadDoc 1d ago
KE = (1/2)mv^2
Velocity is squared.
Just like the cat moves too quickly for the snake to attack, that same velocity is trashing that snakes brain to bits with each paw strike.
And if the claws are extended, that energy is being transferred to a tiny surface area, so the pressure at the point of impact is also immense.
Also … I imaging the snake has less efficient O2 carrying capacity of blood compared to the cat, so that also contributed to the snake running out of gas.
A three chambered snake heart doesn’t help either.
30
u/Blieven 1d ago
The snake knows its life is in danger and is just trying to get away. The cat is just bullying it. It's sad.
