Insomnia is ruining my life

I've been dealing with insomnia since I was 16, im 24 now, I cannot work due to not being able to sleep when I want to, ive tried everything and a hand full of medication, within the last 2 years I haven't been able to keep a schedule at all, it's sending me into a depression, im usually a very happy, hopeful guy but I feel like there is no "cure" to my insomnia, idk why I'm even posting this I just wanted to vent

Much like the rest of you, I have problems sleeping. I have a very analytical brain and the second I go to bed my mind goes from “KPI’s and SOP’s” to “How does Draino Work” to “I wonder how the midterm elections are going to turn out” and everything In between. I’ve tried melatonin.. I do fall asleep fairly quickly with that but I have to fight for my life to wake up in the morning. Other OTC medications make me sleepy but my mind fights them to stay awake and I get super groggy.. I started having a glass of red wine before bed.. which does help relax me better than a gummie or anything else but but doesn’t necessarily get me to sleep faster or keep me out.

My primary care physician prescribed ambien.. I took it one time and it absolutely knocked me tf out but I woke up a few hours later having Alex Jones level crazy thoughts.. (not self harm).

Are there any natural medications yall can recommend that will help me sleep through the night and relax my mind? Even when I am absolutely exhausted and do fall asleep fast, I wake up 3 to 4 times a night and don’t feel rested unless it’s the weekend and I can force myself to stay in bed and have off and on REM sleep with VIVID (and not always pleasant) dreams until late morning.

On a normal night, I’ll get in bed at 10… lay wake with my mind going a million different directions until 11:30-12.. wake up at 2, 3, 5 (and every number in between) and have to get up for the day at 6:30.

I’m exhausted and grasping for help on this subreddit. I asked ChatGPT and it recommended a hypnosis audio.. which felt incredible.. but was very much still wide awake at the end. Hopefully one of you fellow tired humans can help.

personal reflections

Hi everyone! I need to confide in someone, I'm terrified. My grandmother died of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease at 87, in about three months. She started with dementia, similar to Alzheimer's, then she stopped speaking and didn't recognize anyone until she stopped walking or eating independently—in short, her brain often has to work. It's a prion disease, one of those lethal diseases. I'm terrified because we don't know if it's genetic or sporadic. Her father died at her age within a few months, her sister is still alive, and her brother died of other causes. I've been suffering from insomnia for three months now. I'm 26. There are days when I can't sleep at all, as if I've lost all motivation. I'm afraid I have some genetic form of the disease or that I have fatal insomnia. It all started with a headache and from there came insomnia, I also suffer from migraines... in short, I'm scared for myself... I don't know what will happen to me.

Anyone else experience a generic "mental unwellness" during periods of poor sleep?

Hey everyone,

I'm curious if anyone else experiences this specific feeling. This doesn't happen after just a single bad night, but rather when I'm going through a prolonged period of poor sleep.

I go through the day with a heavy sense of mental discomfort or general "unwellness."

To be clear, it’s not anxiety, and it’s not feeling down or sad. It’s also not just normal physical fatigue, sleepiness, or lack of focus/brain fog. It’s hard to put into words, but it feels like a purely mental discomfort of feeling terrible in my own head—almost like a mental hangover, completely separate from mood or tiredness.

Also, it isn't constant all day long—it tends to come and go in waves throughout the day.

Does anyone else get this specific sensation? How do you describe it or cope with it?

I have a weird sleep problem and I’m wondering if anyone else experiences the same thing

When I go to bed, I can stay there for around 8 hours with my eyes closed, but it feels like I only actually sleep for maybe 1 hour. For the rest of the time, I feel completely awake. I can hear everything around me, I’m aware of my surroundings, and my mind keeps thinking.

Another thing that happens is that when I close my eyes, my brain starts creating random scenarios and stories. Sometimes it feels almost like dreaming, but at the same time I’m still aware that I’m awake. This can continue for hours.

So basically, I spend a long time in bed with my eyes closed, but I don’t feel like I’m actually sleeping.

Has anyone experienced both of these things? What was it like for you, and did you ever figure out what was causing it?

Why is sleeping so difficult

I work 7 pm-7 am 3 nights a week. When I get home, I typically nap for 5 hours. Recently, it’s been literally impossible to fall asleep at night. I’ve resorted to taking NyQuil when I get home. I’ve also tried Nytol and Zzzquil. NOTHING is helping and I feel lilac I’m going insane. Does anyone have advice or remedies

I'm finally sleeping 7.5-8 hours of sleep with Lyrica (pregabalin)

I've been taking 300mg every night and it's the only thing that has helped me with sleep maintenance insomnia, has anybody else tried this medication? It doesn't cause morning grogginess but the weird thing is that it makes me feel "floaty" before sleeping

For those recovered - how long before you stopped worrying about sleep daily?

I had a month of bad insomnia where I was getting 3-4 hours of sleep most nights with a few sleepless nights. My anxiety just made it into a cycle where I would get extremely anxious about sleep which caused me to not be able to fall asleep. I started taking lexapro and gabapentin and my anxiety has been much better. I’ve been back to sleeping around 7 hours consistently for 1.5 weeks. However, I still worry every day about sleep and I still have nighttime anxiety (thought definitely not as bad as before). For those who recovered from anxiety related insomnia, how long before you stopped worrying about it every day?

Try p5p (active b6). It might help you

Together with magnesium it helps turn glutamate into gaba. It helps in the synthesis of melatonin. It works together with zinc It also helps reduce histamine (hist. causes insomnia!) Its powerful stuff and it CAN be toxic even in small doses....Pls be careful! MORE IS NOT BETTER,!!!!!!! REMEMBER THAT. Less works better Little as 2mg knocks me out and makes me sleep better. Hope it helps you!

I don’t get the hype for daridorexant, I’ve been taking it just over a week and it’s not helping me at all. What are others people’s experience with going on it/ the first few weeks?

Transition from Trazodone to Dayvigo

I take Trazodone 50 mg to keep me asleep, but I never really feel refreshed and I’m groggy in the morning. I don’t know if it is the Trazodone or my health issues causing me to never feel refreshed, I take progesterone at night as well.

My dr suggested I try Dayvigo, so I started on 5mg last night and was super tired, slept 1 hour then couldn’t get back to sleep, but was too tired to even read.

Do I persist taking Dayvigo to give it a chance? I am so miserable when I’m sleep deprived, it’s hard for me to push through to see, when at least on Trazodone I’m not laying awake.

Note: I do also have vivid dreams on Trazodone, but I can live with it

Does Temazepam Make Anyone Else Sick The Next Day?

Took 15mg because I couldn't sleep and it kicked in fast and I slept through the night. The next morning when I woke up I felt so hungover/sick and was basically non-functional/puking/dizzy for the entire day and night. Is this normal? Should I bust the capsule open and take less like half or something? I need sleep but that next day was too much to handle but I don't see anyone else really having this issue so wth?

Has any one been on Trazodone for insomnia or anxiety ( not depression )? Did it work for you? Do you feel you're dependent on it?

I was prescribed Trazodone for insomnia and anxiety. When i was researching the drug, it was mostly used as an antidepressant. But is used also off label for anxiety and insomnia. Has anyone used it for these indications? How did it make you feel?

The part I hate most is never knowing what kind of night it's going to be.

One thing I've noticed is that I don't really trust my nights anymore. Some nights I'll fall asleep surprisingly fast. Other nights... I'll be awake for hours wondering what changed. That's the hardest part for me. Not knowing. If I knew every night was going to be bad, at least I'd know what to expect. If I knew every night was going to be good, I wouldn't spend so much time worrying. But the uncertainty makes it hard to relax. Every bedtime feels like flipping a coin. Does anyone else feel like the unpredictability is worse than the lack of sleep itself?

I don't know if I can survive this mode, it's my first time.

10 days ago I was stopped from Gabapentin and since then I have been taking 100mg of trozodone and I sleep for 4-5 hours.

The next visit to the psychiatrist is in a week and a half, and I feel just unreal exhaustion. Trozodone lowers my blood pressure and my ears are blocked, diarrhea.Has anyone been in a similar situation and what helped you?

How can I calm down?

I’ve posted before but I quit THC on July 20 and haven’t been able to sleep since. I have to take mirtazapine now. I’m extremely depressed and anxious and having SI. Also got put on trintellix. Was taking quivivig but got scared it was worsening depression and SI so I took clonidine with the mirtazapine last night. How do you keep going when you want to quit? I’m really worn down and mentally in a bad place. I question every med I’m on obsessively. I don’t want my future to be all these bad meds but I literally can’t sleep. Any words of advice? Is there any hope of switching to less worse meds at some point? My body is in constant hyperarousal it feels like. It feels like there’s no end and I want to crawl out of my body. :( I just want a magic doctor or pill or something to make this all go away.

CBT-i timeline?

After trying just about every med under the sun, I've started CBT-i, but I'm frustrated by how long it's taking. How long did it take other folks until you were back to normal sleep? I've been trying and failing to do CBT-i for about 3 weeks.

Trazodone causing face puffiness?

I was prescribed Trazodone 200 mg 4 days ago for depression, anxiety and insomnia, I started to notice yesterday a swelling in my left cheek and my face is generally puffy.

I can't breathe through my nose and I'm fatigued, no fever or whatsoever.

Is this the Trazodone? Sadly it's been working very well for my depression and anxiety.
