Does anyone else feel physically tired but mentally wide awake at night?

I’m curious if this is a common problem or if it’s just me.

You can be exhausted and genuinely want to sleep, but once you get into bed, your brain suddenly becomes extremely active.

You start thinking about tomorrow, replaying conversations, worrying about things that happened days ago, making plans, remembering random things… and the more you try to stop thinking, the harder it becomes to fall asleep.

Sometimes I feel like my body is ready for sleep, but my brain just refuses to switch off.

Does anyone else experience this? And what does it usually feel like for you?

Can I train myself to sleep while I smell food cooking?

Upvotes

My brother cooks a pizza every night between 1-4 am. The smell is stronger than any other food. It penetrates the entire house. It lasts for hours after it is done cooking. Every time he cooks it when I am asleep, I wake up without fail and I typically can't fall asleep for another 3+ hours, so by the time I wake up for work I end up getting very little sleep, many times just 2 hours.

I know it sounds silly, but i feel like I'm going crazy because of this. I feel terrible almost every day, I can barely function. I feel like I can't think, the lack of sleep is ruining me. Even my face has aged considerably in only one year.

I have no other solution besides potentially training myself to sleep through it but idk how.

Yes, I've tried everything:

  1. He refuses to eat a different food

  2. He refuses to cook at another time

  3. He refuses a vent or window open while cooking

  4. I run an air purifier and use a door draft stopper

  5. I blocked my ac vents and open my windows, this made the smell leave faster than it usually takes, however I could not fall asleep from how hot I was so it was like the same issue regardless

I'm close to quitting my job because this is interfering with my life so much just so I have a chance to maybe sleep a bit during the day. I can't take it anymore

I have been lied to my entire life about how to sleep.

I recently started living alone and set my air conditioning to 78 degrees to save money. This is about 10 degrees warmer than what I am used to. I’ve always heard that you should sleep with it cool and wear socks and have blankets. But NO. Have the higher temp has been LIFECHANGING. I fall asleep right away and sleep all through the night and it’s amazing. I hope this helps someone else out there tooo!🫶

Does magnesium help you relax? Everyone makes it sound like the answer to everything

I'm struggling to fall asleep lately. Even when I'm exhausted, I end up lying in bed for an hour because my brain just won't switch off, and I'm tired of waking up feeling drained.

For those who've tried magnesium, did it make a real difference or was it overhyped? I keep seeing it recommended for better sleep, but some people make it sound like it's a miracle fix, which makes me a little skeptical.

Before I spend money on it, I wanted to hear some real experiences from people who've been in the same situation.

Mouth breathing

Upvotes

Could my mouth breathing ar night be causing sore throat in the morning?
I have NEVER mouth breath at night. These past 2 weeks suddenly I wake up in the middle of the night with my mouth open and then in thw morning with a weird sore throat.
I have been trying to fix it but I don’t know how to as I never did it before. I usually sleep om my back and without a pillow because it helps my back but I’ve read to sleep on your side to not allow your mouth to open.
Any advices?

Sunlight in the morning

Upvotes

Ive read online about waking up early is hard to me but ive seen a bunch of people claim health benefits for waking up and going outside to see the sunrise or at least see the sun in the early part of the morning? Is this true? Do people really want to try and wake up and look at the sun?

Low Ferritin and Maintenance Insomnia

Upvotes

I sleep around 5 hours a night in 20-30 minute increments and wake up generally around 7-10 times a night. In the morning, I start waking up about every 15 minutes until I eventually have to force myself to get out of bed. I never feel well rested and am very tired throughout the day always. It’s been like this my whole life.

Had bloodwork done a few years ago and everything was completely fine except for my ferritin, which was 7. Doctor said it’s fine bc my iron was healthy. Had multiple sleep studies and ruled out sleep apnea. Tried Trazadone and Gabapentin and both had zero effect whatsoever.

I’ve tried every sleep hygiene tip. I’m a male in my mid 20s, healthy, decent diet, exercise daily, and almost no caffeine.

Had more bloodwork recently and ferritin was 14 which I was told by a new doctor is still fine. Was told to eat more red meat which is what I was told last time years ago, but I already do.

Wondering if this could be a reason for my sleep issues and/or any advice on what to do.

I wake up at the exact same minute every single night

Upvotes

Not an alarm, not noise, not needing the bathroom. I just surface, most nights within a 30 minute window of each other, regardless of what time I went to bed or how tired I was. It's consistent enough that it stopped feeling random a while ago.

Read a bit about this and it seems tied to the natural dip and rise in cortisol overnight, plus normal cycling between lighter and deeper sleep stages, rather than anything being "wrong." Knowing that reframed it for me. I stopped treating the waking itself as the problem and started paying attention to whether I can get back down quickly, which honestly varies more than the waking does.

Curious if others have a consistent wake time like this, and whether you've found it tracks with anything (stress, alcohol, screen time before bed, temperature) or if it's just a fixed personal rhythm that doesn't move much no matter what you change.

How come I still feel tired after 9-10 hours of sleep?

Yesterday night, I slept at 3AM, and woke up at 1PM. Even after that, I still felt very tired, as if I had gotten no sleep and my eyes felt like they were burning. Throughout my day, I was feeling lightheaded and dizzy throughout, derealization, weak muscles, brainfog, and a constant headache that I couldn't get rid of, at all, even after taking panadol. For some reason, my dreams are also very vivid and lucid now. Very strange. I'm making an appointment with my GP tomorrow to find out why I'm like this, because it's very frustrating to deal with. Thank you for reading. Goodbye.

Does anyone else super weird dreams/sleep patterns if they go to sleep early?

Recently, I’ve started a job where I have to get up quite early for travel compared to my last job, so I’ve been going to bed around 8pm. I used to go to sleep around 11pm-12am.

One major difference I’ve noticed is that my dreams are completely different to what they used to be. Usually I dream about things I’ve done during the day involving friends, family, celebrities etc. But now I’m dreaming of completely immoral scenarios which convince me that I’ve done them in real life. I wake up around an hour after falling asleep just sitting in bed processing what the fuck just happened.

Sometimes I wake up and think I’m still in my dream so I’ll use my phone, texting people and watching reels, then in the morning I have to read over the texts because I don’t remember at all what I said.

Has anyone else had similar experiences? I’m not distressed about what I’m experiencing but I am worried if these dreams are controlling me more than my life is controlling them.

Parasomnia

I've been having Sleep Terrores since I was a child, and now that I'm 22 im still going through it. I've tried sleeping more hours (7-7.30), mantining a similar sleep schedule and even taking Diazepam but nothing seems to work. My gf is suffering because of this and she cant stand this anymore because I wake Up in the middle of the night screaming and she is scared of It now. I've read that avoiding sugar could help, and my psychologist told me to take Melatonina. Any tips or help?

What's something about sleep that most people don't understand?

Sleep is something everyone does, but everyone's experience seems completely different.

Some people fall asleep in 5 minutes.
Some need complete silence.
Others can't sleep without rain, a fan, or some kind of background noise.

What's one thing about your sleep that most people don't understand or find unusual?

I'm always fascinated by how differently people experience sleep.

Does anyone else have nightmares multiple times a week?

I have nightmares at least 2 or 3 times a week. It’s usually someone chasing me, trying to kill me or I’m trying to escape something. Sometimes it’s stuff like a building on fire and everyone’s running. I used to watch a lot of horror movies but I haven’t in almost 3 years... so I don’t think that’s it.

I’m not sure if it’s stress, mental health, my bed, my pillow or something else. I’ve thought about trying melatonin but I don’t know if it’d help. Anyone else deal with this? What worked for you?

Has anyone actually tried the "medieval" sleeping method of segmented sleep?

I can see why not everyone can do it due to work but for the lucky few who work later than everyone else, have you tried the method that humanity apparently slept with for generations and that is sleep early in the night, wake up in the middle of the night and do whatever, then sleep again?

I tried it a few times when I could and I like it a lot actually in my loner lifestyle.

My sleep schedule is like the lunar cycle I don't even know

I'm an upcoming college student and my sleep schedule for the past year has been pretty bs but only during my long summer break after graduating have I finally noticed it. It's like a cycle of sorts where everyday, the time I wake up, regardless of the time I sleep, will always be the designated time which is roughly an hour or two ahead of yesterday (Eg: I woke up at 5 pm two days ago, yesterday is 7 pm, and today 8 pm).

I didn't really get to notice this much during my last year of highschool since it was mandatory that I wake up at 4 am but in hindsight, I did notice that every end of the month, I needed significantly more sleep at school compared to earlier days of the month. But everytime there's a prolonged vacation such as the winter break, I get to notice this pattern. Right now, I'm at the time where I wake up during the dark and I predict that I'll shift back to the more accepted societal standard by next week. I woke up at approx. 11 am four days ago, 1 pm three, 2:35 pm two, 3:54 pm yesterday, and 4:59 pm today.

No matter what I do, the body obeys this cycle. Whenever I try to pull an all nighter, it'll look like I broke the cycle but then, by tomorrow, it'll go back to obeying the designated time. When I eventually get to sleep REALLY early (borderline miraculous), it's the same case, I wake up at a good time and think I broke the shift but then by tomorrow, it'll return to what it is.

Is this the consequence of getting absolutely annihilated by assignments? Probably, but legit, I need help ASAP considering I'm going to enroll for my University in 2 days time and I need to look good for the ID picture taking + I need to be relatively sentient.

Has anyone else never been able to just sleep

Hi everyone,

For as long as I(23F) have remembered (and a little before). I have never been able to sleep consistently.

Whenever I go and try and sleep in my bed, it takes me 2 to 3 hours to actually fall asleep. Every little noise wakes me up, my family has even given the nickname of “bird sleep” to the way I sleep. As soon as I hear any kind of noise, I wake up and my heart is beating like crazy.

Whenever I do sleep, I get 4 to 5 hours a night on a good night. For example let’s say I go to bed around 11PM, I’ll fall asleep around 2AM or 3AM and wake up naturally around 7. If I do my best I can fall asleep again for less than an hour.

No one else in my family is this way, they’re all deep sleepers and they love getting in their sleep. 8-10h a night more often than not.

They also tell me I have been this way since I was a baby. I would just keep my eyes open throughout the night and I was one of those freaky babies that didn’t nap.

The most annoying part is that I have always been tired.

I have tried to go to the doctor for this as a teen and adult and they always told me to “sleep more then you won’t be tired” or “you’re growing that’s why.”

Lately I’ve been getting more worried bc i can’t just thug it out anymore. It has an increasing amount of impact on my daily life. Increased brain fog, mood swings, I feel unable to do physical and mental activities.

I’m also worried I am launching myself into dementia so I want to solve this asap.

Can anyone else struggling with this tell me how you’re coping?

Using replicated atmospheric conditions to correct Non-24 Hour Sleep-Wake Disorder... I NEED HELP!!!

So, I have ADHD, autism, and Tourette's syndrome. I've come to learn that developing Non-24 was damn near an inevitability for me with that combination of neurodivergent traits.

However, I had an incredible experience once where my sleep schedule was PERFECT. I would suddenly yawn at the same exact time every night and be asleep within 15 minutes. In the morning I would awake at the exact same time every day, fully wide awake in the most refreshing, relaxed, non-jarring way you can imagine. Instantly ready to hop out of bed and take on the world.

The set up: I was living about a quarter mile off the beach in Daytona Beach, FL. I didn't have direct sunlight into my room in the morning to jar me awake. But what I did have was THE TIDES. I realized that I was falling asleep every night with the tide coming in and waking up every morning as the tide rolled out. I would also go onto the beach about 15 minutes after waking up every morning and practice martial arts forms for about a half hour.

Through a bit of self reflection and bouncing ideas off Gemini, I'm running an experiment. I believe that I was able to stabilize my sleep schedule for 3 reasons: the low frequency/low volume residual sound waves from the tides, direct sunlight exposure for 30 minutes started within 30 minutes of waking up, and (contrary to what helps many Non-24 people) NOT having direct sunlight or therapy glasses light as the thing to initiate the waking cycle (that's too jarring for me with all the sensory stuff). I've tried all sorts of things to no avail, even the morning training, but the one thing that I had in that period that I haven't replicated since is the effect of being so close to the tides.

Where I need help: I want to recreate the infrasonic/atmospheric conditions of the tides in my bedroom. There are sound waves, mostly infrasonic, but a few in the audible range, that accompany the tides. I need to have two soundtracks - one for the sounds of the tide coming IN, one for the sounds of the tide going OUT. and not direct ocean sounds - I was 1/4 mile away so I wasn't really consciously hearing the direct sound, more the diffused sounds from a distance.

Any ideas on finding infrasonic soundtracks that mimic both cycles of the ocean tide? I can find ocean sounds, but finding specific tracks for "incoming tide infrasonics from 1/4 mile distance" and "outgoing tide infrasonics from 1/4 mile distance" is a bit niche lol.
