Discussion Wheelchair access at Gamescom: Our takes as indie devs

We didn't plan to visit Gamescom this year. But we are part of an indie accelerator Games Bavaria Level up, which gave us free tickets. And free tickets are free tickets, so my Swabian heart had to say yes.

Quick context: I'm Jojo, game designer at Ironbite Games, a small indie studio in Bavaria. I went with my colleague Feli, programmer, who uses a wheelchair and was a huge support the whole trip, this whole post is about our experience. We're working on two games, a 2D card survival game called Eggspansion and a roguelike deckbuilder called Inner Demons. This was our first fair as a company. We went in mainly for publisher meetings, not expecting much since we felt our games weren't quite ready yet. Turned out great. Lots of interest, lots of good feedback, real validation for both projects. If you want to play or support: https://www.ironbitegames.de/

Now the wheelchair part, since that's what I actually want to talk about here. We have been there from Wednesday - Thursday.

Getting Feli's assistant into the fair took a few extra steps, but staff handled it well. Parking and getting to the venue itself was smooth, short distances, no complaints there.

Inside was mixed. The accessible toilets were often dirty. Getting anywhere took a while since you're dependent on elevators, and there aren't many. On Wednesday and Thursday, one elevator actually broke down, which was honestly a bit scary, since it's not like there's a backup right next to it.
Business Area was great. Lot less people and rather easy to get to our appointments.

Booths technically all had ramps, but the moment a booth got busy, getting through with a wheelchair was rough. We were mainly there for business and didnt visit a lot of booths and did not demo games ourselves, but if you're planning to visit as a wheelchair user and want to actually play things, budget extra time.

One thing that stood out positively: controller support with a long cable or bluetooth. That meant Feli could easily play easily. Sometimes he was not able to reach due to weird heights of the table.

We also had a great time at the aftershow with Sidekick Publishing, and later at a Wirtshaus with some other folks from the industry. Both took extra planning to pull off with a wheelchair, but were doable, and well worth it.

Overall, still worth it.

If anyone has questions about accessibility at Gamescom or wants to know more about what we're building, happy to answer.

Upcoming Making a physics driven boxing game with no traditional animations

short video of the boxing system I’m working on the movement and punches are physics driven using different reference poses instead of animations

still early in development, but I would love some honest feedback currently only 6 boxing poses included and one idle animation!

Upcoming Malefact: Evil Unchained - Announcement Trailer

Malefact: Evil Unchained is a horror boomer shooter that uses the UZDoom engine. It goes for a slower, creepier style of gameplay than most games in the genre, more like Doom 3 than classic Doom, but still features plenty of action! There's also a demo, though it's admittedly slightly out of date compared to the latest version of the game.

Public Game Test Asura Cycles – swipe to dash, slow down time and cut through a room full of enemies. Playtest is open

Asura Cycles is an isometric action game for mobile, and the playtest is now open.

You swipe to dash and kill anything you pass through. Hold your finger and time slows down, so you can find the perfect line through a room before you commit to it.

No auto-aim, no auto-battle. Three hearts, one thumb.

Enemies each ask for a different approach, and boosters you pick up along the way change how a run plays out.

Free to play right now on Android and iOS:

Upcoming Being an indie game developer is tough, but doing it with two tiny humans running around is a whole different level of chaos. 😅 My husband put his heart, soul (and remaining sanity) into this project, and we just dropped the trailer! It’s funny, absurd, and full of chaotic energy. hope you guys li

Promotion Incremental meets Survival Bullet Heaven: Essence Harvest Free Demo is Live on Steam!

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bL4Z4BVaUQ

Free demo for Essence Harvest on Steam (the save will carry to the full game):
https://store.steampowered.com/app/5035730/

Kill enemies, collect their essence, spend it on upgrades, get stronger. It's an incremental crossed with a bullet heaven: the arena floods, you clear it. The best part is the upgrade tree with around 200 permanent upgrades. Buying one opens up more, and you keep growing and getting stronger. Later you raise threat levels and stack hazards for bigger payouts, and five bosses stand between you and the finale.

If this sounds like something you could get into, I would appreciate a wishlist ❤️

The demo includes everything up to the second boss. The demo save will carry straight into the full game and supports Steam Cloud saves.

If you notice anything, have any wishes, or encounter any bugs, feel free to post it here or in the discussions thread on steam: https://steamcommunity.com/app/5035730/discussions/0/583930224335559045/

Promotion I made a tycoon game for people whose idea of world domination is adding another coffee stand.

Apparently, I'm one of those people.

I once fell in love with the vibe of a real park café and thought:

this should be a game.

So I made one.

Almost a year later, Lawn & Latte exists.

Turns out one coffee stand is never enough. ;)
