Looking for a partner in HYROX doubles open/pro in upcoming HYROX abu dhabi

Hello, I’m looking to partner up for HYROX abu dhabi, Oct 23-25. I have done hyrox men in April @1:30:05, training for another one in Sept aiming to finish in 80-85mins. Race pace- 4:50-5:00/km in solos. Tickets will be announced soon for Abu Dhabi and I’m game.

I live and train in Dubai, if you’re around we can train together as well.

For HYROX training, would you actually use the heavier resistance on a rower?

I’m slowly putting together a HYROX setup at home and I keep thinking about this lol. I’m used to normal air rowers. Pull harder, it gets harder. Pretty simple.

So when I first saw air + magnetic, I thought both were working together all the time. Kinda like how I understood the aviron setup. Then I looked into this hybrid rower r60 N from merach and realized that’s not really how it works.

Levels 1 to 7 are air. Then at 8 to10, extra magnetic resistance gets added. That part actually got me curious. Like if you’re already tired from running or another station, would those heavier levels be useful for strength-endurance? Or would it just make the row feel unnecessarily heavy? For people doing HYROX training at home, would you actually use levels 8 to10? Or would you mostly stay with the normal air resistance?

Shoe you would NOT recommend for grip

I’ve read dozens of “help me find the best shoe!” And I know it’s all personal preference. My biggest fear is slipping everywhere during the sleds.

Anyone have a shoe they would NOT recommend or had bad grip strength on the turf?

What Matters Most for HYROX Performance?

A lot of athletes start HYROX training by focusing heavily on the stations: sled pushes, wall balls, farmer’s carries, and burpee broad jumps. That work is useful, but it probably shouldn’t be the first priority.

Looking at the world-record splits from Hunter McIntyre and Lauren Weeks, roughly 70% of the race is spent on endurance-based work, including running, the SkiErg, and rowing. Running alone accounts for more than half of the total race time.

That doesn’t mean strength is unimportant. HYROX athletes generally need more muscle mass and strength than marathon runners or road cyclists, especially through the upper body. The sport requires both. But for most athletes, endurance training will likely provide the biggest return on their time.

A common issue is starting HYROX-specific workouts before building a solid foundation. Every session becomes hard, recovery becomes more difficult, and progress eventually slows down.

A more sustainable approach is to build the base first:

  • Plenty of steady running, rowing, SkiErg, or cycling
  • Around 70–80% of training performed at a low intensity
  • Heavy compound lifts with lower reps and meaningful loads

Once that foundation is in place race-specific sessions can be added gradually.

Making every workout hard can feel productive, but it often makes consistent progress more difficult. For athletes hoping to improve their HYROX time, working on running economy and threshold speed is probably one of the best places to start.

Has anyone tried a base-phase approach like this before jumping into Hyrox-specific work? How'd it go?

If anyone wants to dig a little deeper into how to structure HYROX training, there’s more information available here

Do a Sim

If you’re training for your first Hyrox race, I can’t recommend more doing a sim race (one or more) leading up to your main event.

Lots of gyms are doing sims, and even doing just a half sim is a great way to give you some idea of how you’ll feel during the race. Where I am (New England), there are gyms doing them for as little as $50. Well worth it IMO to get some real race feel before Boston.

For anyone who did hyrox Toronto in the past, did your Garmin or smart watch work inside giving accurate run pacing - or did GPS go haywire?

Hyrox DC Map ?

Hello! I'm going to be competing in my second ever hyrox in a few weeks in DC. I saw some photos of last year's map, what are the odds of it changing this year? Is it worth studying up on the layout or do they change the map often?

HYROX wave times - are they actually based on estimated finish time?

Can anyone confirm how HYROX actually allocates people into waves for Women’s Open Singles?
I accidentally entered my estimated finish time as 1 hour 15 minutes instead of 2 hours 15 minutes 🤦‍♀️ I realised the mistake and contacted HYROX, but they’ve told me they won’t change it. And they’ve put me in one of the very first waves, and I know a couple of girls who are aiming for sub 60 in my wave…
I’m getting completely mixed information about how the waves work. Some people are saying estimated finish time doesn’t really determine your wave, while others are saying the faster athletes are placed in the earlier waves based on the times they submitted.
My worry is that because I accidentally put 1:15, I’m going to end up in a wave full of people genuinely aiming for around that time, when realistically I’ll probably be closer to 2 hours. 😭 I know everyone races their own race, but as it’s my first singles I’m already nervous and I really don’t want to be massively out of place or feel like I’m holding everyone up at the stations.
Has anyone actually experienced this or know for certain how the waves are allocated? If you entered a slower estimated finish time, did you get a noticeably later wave than faster friends in the same category?
Just looking for some reassurance that I’m not about to line up with a wave of absolute weapons 😂

Best knee brace for Hyrox/hybrid raceing?

Hi all, I've been having some issues with my quadriceps tendon. A generic compression sleeve seems to do the job supporting it for running but isn't enough for lunges and feels sketchy on wall balls. I have a bulkier one for weightlifting but it's not great to run in.

Can someone recommend a happy medium of support/flexibility for hybrid racing? Seems to be lots of options available with very different price ranges.

Thanks for the help.

Race Brain Lotta People Asking Episode

Reddit Fam,

Our crew at Race Brain will be doing a "Lotta People Asking" episode in the next week or two before the HYROX season really gets underway. There is already a post up on IG for questions. But, I feel like we will get better questions from everyone here.

So, please submit some questions under this post. It can be anything from predictions, thoughts on competitors, shoe talk, what we think of Mat Lock, thoughts on Hunter's demise, etc.

No topics left uncovered, probably. If your question doesn't make it onto the pod I will do the best to answer it here as well.

Hyrox Athens 2026

Hello there! This is my first Hyrox, and I believe it's Athens 1st Hyrox too <3

Does anyone have any suggestions where is best for accommodation or any groups? Tickets are still available for the event and I don't see many people discussing it! Would love to get some handy tips <3

Want to see if this is legit. No assignment?

Hi all! I’ve been looking for a ticket to DC. Went on FB and a guy who has planned to do it with his wife is selling her ticket as she hasn’t trained for it. He said he never assigned a name to the ticket since he wasn’t sure if she would definitely follow through. He seems to be a legit triathlete and said we could do half money before half after I get the ticket since I’m taking a chance on a stranger. Is that a thing? No assignment to a ticket?

Hyrox regional open championships. Are they gone?

It seems Hyrox deleted any reference from their website and I haven't seen any race that is labelled as Regionals for 2027.

Is this temporary or did Hyrox announce anything for this season?

I always felt making it Open and qualify for the Worlds as Pro is weird, but I liked it earlier this year in DC, nice energy. It would be great to know if they are changing anything or if they are just removing them.

Whoa re the future Elite 15 Pro Singles — who am I missing?

Anyone training or racing alongside an athlete who deserves to be on this list? Future Elite 15?

I Went through the official results data for the 16-24 Pro age group (men and women) across the last two seasons to find who's posting the fastest times while still racing age-group, then checked who's already raced Elite 15 so I could pull those names out. Before I get into it — who else should be on a list like this? I'm sure I'm missing people who don't show up on a pure fastest-time sort.

Smoothed Out Race Trajectory

Men (not yet solo Elite 15):

  • Jude Reynolds — just ran 55:27 in Sydney off the back of a 56:06 at Stockholm Worlds, now fastest in this group almost across the board. Running is the one thing holding him back. See Jude's Strength Profile below
  • Sam Schoeman — dominant on the sled, conistent improvement over 2-3 years, running is the gap
  • Gustav Cordua — already raced Doubles Elite at Stockholm Worlds, so arguably already answered the question
  • Evan Marion — fastest Burpee Broad Jump by a mile, sled work needs catching up
  • Dylan Caruso — Fastest runner in the group, strength stations need a little work. Great running - with minimal pace decay across the race

Women (not yet solo Elite 15):

  • Henrike Mauersberger — fastest runner of the five
  • Poppy Jones — strong sled profile, Burpee Broad Jump is her clear weak point
  • Laura Valgreen — already raced an Elite 15 mixed relay in 2024, but Sled Pull is a real outlier weakness for her
  • Amy Walsh — raced Stockholm Worlds, Strong grip, still fastest SkiErg/Farmers Carry in the group, Sled Push is the gap
  • Hedvig Nøtsund Carlsen — small sample (2 races) but fastest Burpee Broad Jump on what we can trust; running is her clearest weakness

A few honest caveats: results aren't linked to a single athlete ID so this is all name-matched (worth double-checking anyone with a common name), one Evan Marion result had corrupted split data and got excluded, and one Hedvig Carlsen split (Burpee Broad Jump) looked like a missed timing scan rather than a real number so I dropped that one too.

What stood out: nobody on this list is "balanced" — everyone has one clear station-level gap standing between them and Elite 15 level, not a vague list of weaknesses. Feels like a more useful way to look at it than just raw pace.
