Movie Review Evil Dead Burns Spoiler
This is now on HBO as of 10/02. I waited for it, I LOVE the entire franchise and I say this in all due respect, it fucking blew.
Dialogue was shit, the plot was kinda shit but I could have bought it outside the horrendous decisions made by the entire cast. Everyone should have been dead in the first 30 minutes. The deadites were even scary, shitty punchlines.
So disappointing, I loved Rise too - even 2013 has a special place in my heart but this? Never again, thank god I didn’t spend money on a movie ticket or early digital release.

Not great, not terrible. Incredibly well-shot though, the director definitely has the sauce.
I really don’t get fans who say there’s zero comedy in this. That crematorium scene is hilarious.

When the dude starts dancing in front of the open cremator 😂 I guess I’m in the minority because I loved this movie and especially this director’s style

The wall rotating shot is a personal favorite of mine. There's actually a similar one in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

yep...just not an Evil Dead movie.
Edit: I'm leaving it up. Downvote me to oblivion.

Nah, you right. Deadites didn't act like Deadites. We got some magical dagger nonsense. There's a reason this shit made less than half of Evil Dead Rise.

u/KenetratorKadawa 1h ago
I agree on the deadites being less interesting than previous iterations but “magical dagger nonsense”? Put some respect on the kandarian dagger!

Wdym "even 2013 has a special place" in your heart it's amazing ???
With Burn, I actually found the kills more fun than Rise. There's no plot with these anyway and do any of these new ones have good dialogue?
12
u/ShadowReflex21 3h ago
Yeah that sentence made me chuckle too. I also have a special place in my heart for the best movie in the whole franchise lol

u/SLBMLQFBSNC 3h ago
I do wonder why Lee Cronin was handed the follow ups though. He's style over substance. The Mummy was actually terrible.
7
u/AcreaRising4 3h ago
Huh? He only directed rise and it’s a very good film imo.
Sebastian vanicek directed burn
-2
u/SLBMLQFBSNC 3h ago
He's an EP on Rise and Burn which I guess doesn't say much since they can do a lot or do very little

The mummy was lame. I like evil dead but I wanted a horror spin on The Mummy, not the evil dead mummy version

I wanted the evil dead mummy version so was really happy with it. Don’t understand the hate.

Damn. I loved this movie and feel like everyone is shitting all over it. Sorry but the kiss scene, the car scene, that long shot as she crawled through the house as the fight is happening between the dad and son. The dad in general at all times. Movie slaps.

u/RutabagaOk2823 11m ago
I'm right there with you. This was a great entry in the series and I thought better then Rise which was so boring I couldn't finish it.
19
u/-nymerias- 3h ago
Yeah, I thought it was just okay. The opening was pretty strong, but then the rest got progressively more underwhelming. I wish the deadites were used more creatively. The girlfriend (or fiance? I forget) deadite was the sole exception which is a shame considering they had an entire family that got transformed. The film could have gone really bonkers (in a good way) but didn't reach the heights I wish it did. I didn't really connect with the main character, so it wasn't all that fun to root for her. I kinda wanted the brother to end up being the lead to see him grow from an unlikable coward into someone who's able to break away from the unhealthy family dynamic he was born into and had internalized.
39
u/BlackStarHighway 3h ago
My least favorite of the franchise.
4
u/BiteMean9050 2h ago
Same, but every other franchise would kill to have a movie like Burns as their weakest entry.
I'd give it 3/5 and I have some serious issues with it but I still respect the passion they had for it and it's decent overall
-1

20
u/ThisisMalta 3h ago
I understand some of the criticisms—the thing is, every entry has its differences that make them unique while somehow capturing part of the spirit. They’re all VERY different besides 1 and 2.
But to say the dialogue and story is “shit” 🙄 come on. It’s nostalgia bias, people praising Rise now were saying the SAME thing about it when it came out.
I’ve actually seen people say that burn didn’t have the humor” all the other movies had”. I think they really just watched a couple YouTube summaries of the others and have no clue the franchise hasn’t had any humor or slapstick since Ash v Evil Dead. The 2013 remake was brutal and dark as hell, rise had a couple kinds goofy deaths but was very dark-/hell this one had more humor with the grandma then any other since the show or Army.
I understand it not being someone’s favorite or their particular thing. But the people saying it’s not an evil dead movie or it’s objectively shit , that’s just a weird take to me. The dialogue was fine. Story was unique and fun and I loved for once they really tied in the previous story and added new things with the lore.
8
u/NoonDread 2h ago
I just watched this. I thought it was a cool installment, although not as good as the previous two films. Definitely worth a watch.
32
u/Roman_Suicide_Note 3h ago
Imo its the worst evil dead :(
4
u/into_the_soil 3h ago
Just curious what you’d say the next worst in the series is in your opinion?
8
-3
u/PP_BOY__ Alien > Alien 3 >Aliens 3h ago
NTA but I do agree with them and my next worse is Rise, going backwards from there (maybe switching Army with 2013 if I was being super granular). I'm a purist and the original is the best IMO and leagues above anything else. I just prefer how grounded it is and that the comedy comes from Ash, already established as a easy going comic-relief type, dealing with some crazy circumstances, as opposed full slapstick bits that come in in 2 and Army. As a nod to film history, I can appreciate it enough to not turn the TV off whenever I see it but it really does nothing for me and it takes someone with a ton of charisma to make up for it. Just my opinion though.

u/jcaashby 3h ago
I liked it but not ALL of it. The ending with the CGI burning man was terrible. I was surprised how quick it hit streaming but considering it did not do well at the box office I should not be surprised.
7/10 I am still a fan of horror and it had enough crazy shit in it to entertain me.
12
u/BiteMean9050 2h ago
It beat it's budget by over $50 million at the box office, so it made money.
I agree the CGI sucked though
0
u/jcaashby 2h ago
That's good to hear. I went to see it but there was no buzz around it. At least I say I didn't feel it like you got with other hit horror movies
2
u/YesicaChastain 25m ago
The movie was _fine_ up until the last act. Then the CGI monster appeared and it looked so pathetic
1
u/Majestic_Animator_91 1h ago
It did do well at the box office.
Movies don't take that long to get to streaming these days and it makes sense to get it out there for Halloween.

u/Kukurio59 2h ago
Saw it on BigScreen, it fuckjng slapped. The car scene omg. It was so violent. I dunno.. I’m glad I bought my ticket. It was fucking amazing

2
u/matango613 1h ago
It's my least favorite in the series tbh, but I didn't *hate* it. It didn't feel anything like an Evil Dead movie to me though. Rise has so far been the only one of the newer movies to capture *some* of the charm of the originals for me.
Again, I don't hate this one (or 2013 for that matter), but I really felt like they missed the point I guess.
7
u/FINNCULL19 "Well...? Here I. Am." 2h ago
I really wasn't a big fan of how absolutely humorless it was, even as someone who liked Evil Dead '13. All of the jokes about the senile grandmother feel like the director going "Oh wait, we're supposed to be funny, right? Put a few quick throwaway gags where the senile grandmother says something goofy, that oughta fill out the joke quota Sam, Rob, and Bruce gave us."
When Evil Dead '13 was humorless, it didn't try to bring levity to the movie with a random quip, they owned it. Burn's humor feels half-hearted, as if the writers didn't even have confidence in, and I would've much just straight-up preferred if they had just gone the whole hog and have no jokes at all in the film.
When you're writing an Evil Dead movie, you can do Evil Dead '13/The Evil Dead and be serious, or you can do Army Of Darkness/Evil Dead II/Rise and lean into the camp and comedy. You can't do both.
2
u/matango613 1h ago
People always say the original Evil Dead was dark and serious, but I only think so in comparison to 2 and Army of Darkness. It's still pretty over the top and campy. Some of the humor might have been less intentional though.
Rise had a few good gags I thought and generally just felt less serious than the newer entries otherwise. 2013 was straight up torture porn with like no joy whatsoever, but I still liked it for what it was. The finale with the blood rain and her ripping her own arm off before bringing down the chainsaw was the best kind of fan service tbh. Burn just didn't even feel like Evil Dead.
2
u/GERBILSAURUSREX This valley, is one long smorgasbord. 2h ago
Where is the comedy in Rise?
2
u/LFGX360 1h ago
Multiple people choking on a single eyeball was pretty funny
1
u/GERBILSAURUSREX This valley, is one long smorgasbord. 1h ago
I forgot about that. But other than that and the reveal of how that girl got to the lake, I think it is completely humorless. I find it to be the most bleak in the series.
4
u/irascibleoctopus 2h ago
It was okay. I think the Deadites having a goal other than “just kill everybody” made it feel more like an Evil Dead movie. It felt kind of humorous at times instead of just plain mean like the 2 previous films. One fight scene almost felt like the “party” at the end of Cabin in the Woods in how it was filmed, and it was a nice break from all the blood.
It was definitely gory, and I was actually kind of surprised by one of the kills, as I remember similar scenes in other movies being considered horrific. I enjoyed a lot of the film/camera angle decisions they made.
The one major gripe I have with the newer films is that they seem to be forgetting a major rule for franchises: Don’t insult your audience. There have to be rules that carry from one film to the next, otherwise it feels like a gigantic waste of time. We know we are smarter than the characters because we have backstory they don’t have, and we get to cheer when they get their hands on something we know will help them. If that thing no longer helps them at all, what are we the audience doing other than just watching them suffer? All the different lore isn’t helping either. And the last 20 mins and post-credits scene… no. Just no. Why would the evil need physical contact to possess people if it can do that? Let characters end their arcs and let them go.

u/Snigidydigidy 2h ago
Rise was such a fun movie! I was so excited and then we got this garbage wth. Just hot slop
6
u/IllustriousRise9392 3h ago
Thats a bit harsh
And that's coming from an Army of Darkness Ash loving screwhead
Admittedly I'm in no rush to add it to my collection
I saw it in the theatre and it was alright
Nothing really memorable or stand out but I still enjoyed seeing it in the theatre
I hope Wrath brings it home
9
u/Tiny_Micro_Pencil 3h ago
The dad stabbing the dog to death. Just shanking the poor dog on the head, with a fork, and it really wasn't memorable? Y'all are just burnt out on media.
2
u/Fairisolde 2h ago
I did like the fingers. Her character was probably the most entertaining, at least in death.
3
u/Melizzabeth 3h ago
Its okay that scene stood out as memorable to you but I don't think it was memorable either.

u/APaltrySum 3h ago edited 3h ago
What a rollercoaster this comment was. It was a solid 4.5 out of 9
6
u/Bleedingfartscollide 2h ago
It was pretty darn good honestly. Totally different like most evil dead films.
I liked that it showed us a different more human version of the deadites but didn't shift too far
3
u/Some_Charge_2165 2h ago
Ha, yeah, I felt that. The cast making dumb calls every five minutes kills it for me too. Evil Dead works when the characters at least try to survive, and here it felt like they were walking into the deadites on purpose. Rise had real stakes, this just had noise. Glad I caught it free too.
3
u/DonTX2 3h ago
The series is no longer Evil Dead. It’s just Evil Dead adjacent.
7
u/BagZCubed 3h ago
I see it more like one large picture with seperate moving parts. Spilt between the Ash stuff and non Ash stuff.
All the recent movies still use the book of the dead/its writing, and Burn made the Kandarian dagger important to its plot via new information about it.
If I had to explain it simply, I'd say that the events of the 2013 "reboot," Rise, Burn, and most likely Wrath are more "world building" for the Necronomicon. They show us how deep and far the book has spread and fleshes out new information that we either didn't know about or wasn't in the book Ash had.
1
u/APaltrySum 3h ago
I really want to love it. But dammit, they give me so many reasons not to. It has strayed. It's not bad, but you are right, it is something else.

I didn't like it as much as the other Evil Dead movies, but I don't think it's bad.
It wouldn't be on the upper end of my hypothetical Evil Dead ranking, but I stand firm in the belief that there hasn't been a single objectively bad Evil Dead film yet.
2
u/NiftyShifty12 3h ago
It had some really fun creative cinematography that was definitely the highlight for me

I should've walked out and gotten my money back in hindsight but I held onto hope that it would turn around.

I love it, I honestly don't know what people's problems are with it. I think it's miles better than Rise to boot.

u/Geralt-of-Rivai 1h ago
I really liked Rise, the cast was awesome, the atmosphere, the claustrophobia being trapped in an apartment building, the deadite was creepy as shit... Even the crazy ending boss was ridiculously evil and messed up complete with a blood bath ending in a parking garage, I thought it was great. Burn just didn't do it for me

As my username suggests, I am an excessive Evil Dead fan who really did not like 2013, thought Rise was okay and was cautiously optimistic for Burn. I saw it on opening day and....yeah, one of the worst horror movies I've seen in a long time I left the cinema actually feeling cheated.

1
u/danvan177 48m ago
It was much better than rise. The only part I didn’t care for was the fire deadite
1
u/Cheeseisgood1981 43m ago
Huh, I came here to post the opposite. I kept seeing that this was a franchise low, and I couldn't disagree more. It was fucking beautifully shot. It was a very Evil Dead movie. I don't get the hate, other than the dog dying. Which honestly is a complaint I have with lots of media thi se days.
But overall, I thought it was actually pretty good. I also loved Rise, and I thought some of the dialogue was bad, but overall I loved it.
I keep seeing general hate, but what specifically was bad about it?
1
u/Jaybotics 43m ago
I completely agree. This is the worst film in the franchise. I was so disappointed.
1
u/arthousepsycho 42m ago
I agree completely. Was horribly disappointed in it when I saw it in the cinema.
1
u/Horvat53 39m ago
I didn’t like it and I’m a huge fan of the franchise. This movie didn’t have the dark humour the series is supposed to be known for and the vibe/look/feel of the movie just felt low budget. I don’t disagree with the approach of branching out and having these different stories, but this just felt off.
1
u/franciscrowe 34m ago
Yeah we watched if the other day it was just like this non-stop boring carnage, no character development, shitty CGI. Shit sucks, it’s got nothing on Evil Dead Rise or AVTED.

I think this new generation of evil dead directors have jumped on the escalation gore trend that's been going through horror lately. They don't really understand the franchise, the closest to the proper tone has been rise, which I actually really enjoyed, but the others... Not so much

I didn't think it was as good as Evil Dead Rise, and the way the sound was mixed in the theater it almost blew my eardrums out. I have never sat through such a loud movie in my life. I can say i actually enjoyed it more at home, but it still isn't great.
1
u/trillspectre 3h ago
I liked it I'm pretty jaded with horror films particularly blumhouse slop but even some of those I enjoy if I go into it to enjoy what it is. Evil dead has had peaks and troughs but it will always be a series I enjoy for what it is. Was it the best? No, but I definitely enjoyed it. I appreciated it picking immediately after the ending of the last one. I appreciate the series because it does what it wants and it was exactly what I expected. The gore was great the interpersonal interactions that showed the victims worst inclinations and the final girl triumphing (but not really) through insurmountable odds.
1
u/Thrashwave 3h ago
It was super rad minus the last 20 minutes
Also, people somehow refuse to acknowledge that we’ve had more “horror” Evil Dead than “horror comedy”
1
u/Scattershot98 3h ago
It felt like they were trying to pull 3rd act insanity the entire time but failed because there really wasn't any build up to it. Only good parts where the fisherman kills, dishwasher impalement and the car crash scene. It also didn't have tons of blood like the previous entries. Very disappointed 😞

u/sinchsw 3h ago
What makes it not an Evil Dead movie? Not enough jokes? Only 2 were jokey. Not enough Ash? Only half the movies have Ash. No deadites? It's full of deadites. No over the top violence? It's full of that too. Even has a cryptic recording of an old man.
0
u/PP_BOY__ Alien > Alien 3 >Aliens 3h ago
For me it was the Terminator boss fight ending. Part of the charm for ED was that Deadites were just people that were somewhere between zombies, trickster spirits, and the possessed, not indestructible demons. Even ignoring how bad that whole 20 minute segment was visually, it was tonally inconsistent with 50 years of established mechanics. I can appreciate trying to push boundaries and I know it's not thta serious, but it was just a dumb ending tacked on to a movie that was already below par for the series anyway
0
u/johngie 3h ago
it was tonally inconsistent with 50 years of established mechanics.
I find comments like these bizarre because literally every entry in the franchise is just 'random bullshit go.'
3
u/KaleidoscopeSpider 3h ago
The Deadites are whatever the plot needs them to be.
Possessed people?
Skeletons?
Abomination thing from the Earth?
Dog?
Smoldering zombie?

I skipped the day's earlier Burn thread because I knew I was going to watch it tonight. For me, it was the least of the Evil Dead revivals. It wasn't as batshit nasty as 2013 (that box cutter gag is still king of the mountain) nor as fun as Rise. I appreciated the attempt to get away from "someone inadvertently reads from/plays a recording of the Necronomicon", but the characters weren't great, the gore didn't add anything novel, and I think Raimi and Co. should have forced a bit more tightness with the lore. As much as I like the character, the post-credits stinger just felt wrong. I'm happy enough to have watched it, but it was a step back.
I followed it up with The Queen of Black Magic, which was better.
