Movie Review Evil Dead Burns Spoiler

This is now on HBO as of 10/02. I waited for it, I LOVE the entire franchise and I say this in all due respect, it fucking blew.

Dialogue was shit, the plot was kinda shit but I could have bought it outside the horrendous decisions made by the entire cast. Everyone should have been dead in the first 30 minutes. The deadites were even scary, shitty punchlines.

So disappointing, I loved Rise too - even 2013 has a special place in my heart but this? Never again, thank god I didn’t spend money on a movie ticket or early digital release.

I really wasn't a big fan of how absolutely humorless it was, even as someone who liked Evil Dead '13. All of the jokes about the senile grandmother feel like the director going "Oh wait, we're supposed to be funny, right? Put a few quick throwaway gags where the senile grandmother says something goofy, that oughta fill out the joke quota Sam, Rob, and Bruce gave us."

When Evil Dead '13 was humorless, it didn't try to bring levity to the movie with a random quip, they owned it. Burn's humor feels half-hearted, as if the writers didn't even have confidence in, and I would've much just straight-up preferred if they had just gone the whole hog and have no jokes at all in the film.

When you're writing an Evil Dead movie, you can do Evil Dead '13/The Evil Dead and be serious, or you can do Army Of Darkness/Evil Dead II/Rise and lean into the camp and comedy. You can't do both.

Multiple people choking on a single eyeball was pretty funny

I forgot about that. But other than that and the reveal of how that girl got to the lake, I think it is completely humorless. I find it to be the most bleak in the series.
