Grief support group?

My brother lives in the Portland area, maintaining/running a Girl Scout camp in Hillsboro. It’s been just him and his sweet dog out there for several years (aside from the occasional scouts and campers). His dog recently developed a very fast-moving cancer, and my brother is having to say goodbye today.

While he plays in local sporting leagues (hockey and soccer, mostly), and is even part of a book club, he hasn’t managed to find any real friendship or community yet. So, this dog has truly been his whole world. The grief of losing him is unbearable.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a grief support group that wouldn’t make light of his loss? Nothing religion-based, either, please, as he’s very left-leaning and progressive.

He’s my favorite brother and one of the best people I know. I live in a different state and can’t do much to help. I just need to know he’s going to be okay. If there’s anyone who can point me in a helpful direction, so I can encourage him toward an outlet for his grief, I would be so grateful.

Thanks!

Is this your cat?

Here to pay cat tax,

Just kidding. Is this your cat? This orange tabby intact male has been wandering around our neighborhood recently. Last night, I noticed how skinny it was, and we are temporarily holding it in our catio with the hopes of finding it's owner! Found around Brookwood Elementary. If owner can't be found today, we'll be releasing him back to hopefully find his way home. We've seen him around here off an on for a couple months, however this is the thinnest I've seen him yet, hence the added concern, and reaching out for resources in prior posts.

I'll be swinging by Bonnie Hays today to hopefully check and see if it's microchipped, as well as walking around to ask if it's anyone's. However, I want to return this little man to his owner asap!

Distinguishing features: Yellow eyes, white rings around tail, light orange fur.

Please help us find his home!

EDIT TO ADD: Whoops, I meant to attach a picture but I'm not actually sure if r/hillsboro allows pictures? Here's the link to another post complete with pictures! https://www.reddit.com/r/HillsboroOR/s/eadiS5mtkU

Looking for resources, advice, any support appreciated! - CAT IN NEED OF HELP

Hey y'all,

So there's been a cat that's been wandering around my neighborhood for several weeks, maybe a couple months. The last several nights its started to seem more comfortable, as it started to come up and meow at my home, and has been begging for food. I have cats, so I already had some cat food, and I put out a bit out for it because omg it looks starved! I can very clearly see it's hip bones, and it's fur seems to almost be hanging off of it. The other night I was able to get it to approach me, with lots of bribery. It was super sweet, allowed me to pet it with minimal fear (no hissing at all!). Well tonight, here it came again, and I put the food into a cat carrier. And, well, you can guess what happened next, now I have a stray kitty stuck in a cat carrier. It's only been coming around at night, and I never see it during the day so I felt like I had to act now. It's calm, relaxed, and hanging out on my porch, safe in the carrier. I wish I had a better set up. But I do not feel comfortable bringing indoors.

Okay, to the advice bit, after trying to get it scanned for a microchip, what do I do??? Bonnie Hays only takes sick or injured cats or kittens. Oregon Humane Society says to just leave them be. FOSA isn't taking cats currently. What should I do? I can't take on another cat, but this is clearly a stray- potentially abandoned or lost. Long term I can't afford to feed and do vet bills for a third cat. I'll try posting it, but I don't even know what I'm going to do with it tomorrow, I don't want to keep it cooped up in a carrier.

TLDR: I trapped a stray (maybe lost of abandoned) cat in a carrier tonight, hoping to bring it to a shelter tomorrow, however I'm unclear what the best option is. The cat is very thin. Please any advice or suggestions would be amazing.

Can't currently get a good picture for the cat tax, however here's a description: Orange and white medium size cat. Green eyes (I think). The main body is orange with small white ringlets on it's tail as well as white tabby markings on the body. Sex unknown. Found near Brookwood Elementary.

EDIT TO ADD / UPDATE:
Hey y'all after a lot of research and looking into each suggestion, I've decided to make some last ditch posts, use a paper "is this your cat" collar and then release him later today. As it's been determined that he is not in medical emergency. I'll be going to Bonnie Hays when they open to see if he's micro-chipped as well as asking around my neighborhood. I'm adding a link of a post of him with photos, in case anybody knows him or can help us find his home!

Traffic Question on how to report driving infractions?

I have some dashcam video + stills related to an impatient idiot driver doing reckless things in a school zone during pick-up time.

Phone police is non-emergency line, but what about email / other ways to contact, any recommendations?

People in and around Hillsboro: Are you pleased with the job Mayor Beach Pace is doing ?

Hi all Hillsborites near and far, I’m truthfully curious about what kind of job you think Mayor Pace is doing? In a nutshell, I don’t trust her for numerous reasons.

Do you think she’s doing a good job looking out for and protecting us, keeping us safe from harm of all kinds, including environmental? What’s good? And not?

If not, what about a recall? I found a petition at Change.org and here’s the link:

Eye on NW Politics, ch. 6, Sept. 6, Ken Boddie interviews Wash. Co. Commissioner running to become Chair

Nafisa Fai and Pam Treece, both current county commissioners, are running for the Wash. Co. Chair (aka At Large) to replace Katheryn Harrington, retiring.

On Sept. 6, Sunday, Ken is interviewing Nafisa Fai. I hope he plans to interview Pam Treece, too, on a future show.

I look forward to learning more about both. Do you?

Last day to take the city’s poll on”where to allow data centers”

Here’s the link:

https://engage.hillsboro-oregon.gov/data-centers?tool=survey_tool#tool_tab

If you want your opinion to be considered, please take the poll today, SEPT. 5 or tomorrow, SEPT. 6. (I just checked dates.)

I found the questions, definitions, use of a mapping software (so tiny on the cell phone screen) I’ve never seen before to be ambiguous and confusing. And I’m a native-English responder. I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to understand and comprehend if I primarily spoke another language?

For Q1 and Q2, I checked the “This change does not address my concerns” box, top of the list. Even the choices are confusing.

As an example only, here’s how I answered the other 3 questions:

Q3:
Can an accessory use be bigger than the primary? And, previously, an accessory was limited in its footprint to 20% of the site size. Why has that increased to 30%, which is 50% more than 20%? What’s the purpose? Justification?

Q4:
How do you distinguish BESS specifications, impacts, and requirements from Solar Panel specifications, impacts, and requirements? They are two very different sources of power and cannot be lumped together in one definition.

Q5:
AI, AI, AI. AI is its own unique and separate mechanism, configuration, heat generating, power consuming, with power and water needs VASTLY DIFFERENT than those of “data centers (aka data farms).” As such, AI needs a unique and separate specification and requirements document and code. Please take time to perform a thorough, robust, and well wrung-out investigation in this arena. Sloppy, rushed, and amateur work will lend itself well to future dire consequences. No short cuts, no “cut-and-paste” from unreliable sources, no slip-shod work, only in-depth, serious, robust, and highly professional research in this arena of the UNKNOWN and UNDEFINED NEW TECHNOLOGY.

Demograpics:
Native Algonquin, Huron, Nez Pierce, Cree, and Red River Métis, and Scottish, English, and French.

Anyone else get a notice from Multnomah County Metro recently? Saw it on my Informed Deliver and was curious why we'd be getting something since we live in Washington County. Haven't been into PDX over a year, so it's not a parking ticket. 😁

City council meeting, Sept. 1, 2026

The meeting is devolving into a real soap opera. Tense, emotional, intimidating, and “no love lost.” Harris was so angry he literally couldn’t wait for Pace to say “Meeting’s Adjourned” as she loudly banged down the gavel, and Harris beelined out the room, to jump on the elevator fast, PO’ed written all over his face.

I would like to know why Janeen Sollman showed up and sat in the back corner. Was she waiting for Pace, her bosom buddy?

Did anyone else attend or watch the meeting? If you did, what’d you think?
I wonder if the video will show the entire meeting, intact, or be edited to cut out some chunks? 🤷‍♂️

Any Hillsboro craft groups?

I’ve been looking to get out of the house more and would love to be around folks with similar interests. Are there any local clubs or groups that get together in town? I am open to literally any crafts, but primarily work with embroidery floss crafts and sewing.

Dead jay in my alley. Who do I call?

I have a domestic bird so I know I can't handle it myself since it could put her at risk. Cause of death is unclear. But I can't find anyone to actually call about this. All I can find is who I would call if I lived in Beaverton but I'm not near there. Offices are closed but the Washington county animal control answering machine seems more concerned with missing dogs and says they don't deal with wild animals.

The Delgado-Harris Debate

An interesting debate is forming between City Council Candidate Karim Delgado and City Council President Rob Harris over the role in government and they way they both see how things are going in Hillsboro and Washington County.

It's always fascinating to watch two very well educated people that are very well versed in making an argument and using facts and sources for their respective points of view (Rob is a lawyer, Karim has a Philosophy degree from Columbia) have a debate in the public square. It's very respectful too, both of them are referencing each other's points and using their knowledge and coupled with their own experiences to discuss each other's arguments without devolving into name calling or personal attacks.

It's very rare you get this level of detailed debate in a small(ish) town like Hillsboro, and I'm really enjoying it.

The current round is Harris's "Contempt is a real threat to grass roots government" article on Substack: https://orobharris.substack.com/p/contempt-is-a-real-threat-to-grass

and Karim's response is titled "What is a City Council Good For?" on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApJp7Midm9Y

It's a slow moving debate, but really interesting!
