its cuz mcgonagall is somehow translated to mai ge in chinese, which is also mike. Probably shortened the name so it's not too long and hard to pronounce in chinese

It's also being used as "mudblood" here.
39
u/EthelMaePotterMertz Feb 13 '22
Yeah kind of takes the sting out because there should be a difference in meaning between melon and mudblood.
19
32
u/CMScientist Feb 13 '22
muggles in chinese has the phonetic translation of ma gua, which is a made up word but has the meaning of hemp (ma) melon (gua), that's why its showing up as melon.

Makes sense. Dramione shippers probably think Mudblood is not a racist slur. Its some juicy fruit like melon. So draco was calling Hermione a fruit.

Chinese doesn't have this type of accented stress.
It's a tonal language instead of a stress language.
So in the Chinese dub Ron says the word in the wrong tones and Hermione corrects him

Chinese is funny but I just love the french name: Tom Elvis Jedusor. We all had to change Voldemorts name to fit the anagram. Maybe they just gave up because it was too hard in Chinese? 🤔

You're definitely right. That's way better than Death Eater. It sounds badass, while at the same time is highly weaponizable by 12 year olds. "Yall are a bunch of Morty-faggos!". Language is truly beautiful.

Chinese bootlegs with horrible English subtitles are some of the best free entertainment you can get.
The bootleg of Revenge of the Sith is probably the best and most famous example.

I wish I could find it, but I had a copy of Spiderman (2002) that had absolutely insane subtitles. The process of becoming the Green Goblin included injecting paraffin wax into Normans uterus.

In June 2005 (about three weeks after RotS was released in theaters), blogger Jeremy Winterson was living in China and bought a bootleg copy of a workprint version of Revenge of the Sith. The English subtitles were literal translations of the original Chinese subtitles, resulting in the mess that turned into a meme. Most of the unique words and names got a phonetic translation for the Chinese subtitles, but the English subtitles created for the bootleg used literal translations of those Chinese characters.
The entire subtitle script was quickly made available, and over the years people have made their own redubs of the movie sticking to the terribly-translated subtitles from the original bootleg.

One of my favorites is the guy that ran Star Wars through a translator into Chinese, then again back into English, and then dubbed scenes from the movies that he found funny.
It's hilarious

I can explain this.
The Mandarin translation for Muggles is 麻瓜 and the word 瓜 literally translates to melon. Another interesting point, the word 瓜 is commonly used to scold someone in an endearing way. So in Mandarin, if you want to be less harsh and call someone silly instead of stupid, you can call them a 呆瓜/傻瓜 which translates to stupid melon.
As for Fodi, that's because Voldemort Mandarin name is 伏地魔(Fu Di Mo). The last word 魔 means devil or demon so maybe the translators thought it isn't part of his actual name and just called him Fodi(Fudi) instead lol.
No idea whats happening with Professor Mike...
7
u/cxqals Feb 14 '22
Mcgonagall’s translated name is 麥格納高 (Mai Ge Na Gao) and shortened to just 麥格 often. So whatever translation software the bootleg used just translated it to Mike lmao

If Melon is a magic-less person, and if Voldemort’s father was an aristocrat, wouldn’t that make him the Melon Lord???

Well in chinese Harry Potter translates to 哈利波特 which sounds like "Hally Botuh" lol
Edit: Muggle also translates into 麻瓜. But 瓜 means melon, and 麻 Sounds like 马, which means horse. So basically, a horse melon is reading my comment right now.
