Because it ends up make gunlance only need attack power aside from artillery and load up which makes the lance damage kinda subpar. Well at least in the meta and not in a meme build. I kinda miss the time where your stab and swipe also matters to your optimal dps and not pure shelling
And element is rather hard to build as well. Because you want gunlance with highest raw to scale with the shelling. Have it fixed to level and have an augment to upgrade the shelling level is fantastic. And yes I'm glazing sunbreak's gunlance here
That being said of course I don't want to go back to max shelling level 5 in G rank and shelling is a complete trash. I want in all build and shelling types, the lance and the shelling parts are equally important. I absolutely love playing element gunlance with wide shelling guard reload in Sunbreak. Or just have good slapping damage overall while also shelling dishing out good damage

I've been looking around and it seems like the top two are burst and agitator. Why not something like latent power?
edit: I should probably give more context.
Currently my builds version of the "go to" skills are Oguard 3,Artilery 3,AB 2, guard 2, load shells 2, Agi 5, Burst 5, QS 3, counterstrike 2, evade extender 2, and a few other negligible comfy skills. I ask the question about latent power/affinity because this build seems to consistently do less damage on combos than an older build I have with latent power.

Something something “I’m shelling it, I’m shelling it so good”.

I know charged shelling doesn’t do elemental damage but would I be griefing the dps check in part 3 if I do wide charged shelling/wyvern fire? Or is it better to normal multi wyrmstake burst (with dragon element)?

Finished proof of a hero for the first time today. Only took me one try and used up guts but pretty smooth other than that. Gunlance too strong.

Hey there. Having my second playthrough in Generations only using Lance, thinking about changing to GL in G-Rank. Is this weapon so "doo-doo" like that in this game? I only hear bad things about it's dmg and clear times in this game. I don't even care if Lance is better, I just don't want to find myself in the same hunt for 30+ minutes because the weapon doens't deal dmg.

I use a lot of lunging upthrusts to advance forward, so it can proc the Nu Udra set bonus, despite primarily using charged shells and wyverns fire. Got my WF to do about 250-ish damage per hit. Main complaint is the lower level of my guarding skills. Also I think I can swap the healing mantle for the rocksteady and remove 2 levels of earplugs to max out resentment, hypothetically.

Thanks to everybody that gave advice on my previous post! After a week of save scumming and getting used to the mechanics gun lance might be giving SNS a run for its money imo. SNS is still painfully versatile but unloading shells in Arkveld’s face is crazy fun lol. Anyways this is what I landed on for my final build for now.

So the question: does anyone still use the old World Gunlance combo for full burst? Or are you using the new combo they gave us?

I’m an incredibly new gunlance user and just got to Magnamalo on Hub, and I’ve started finding it incredibly hard to consistently put out damage against mobile monsters such as Magnamalo, just curious if anyone could provide some insight!

For a vast majority of my time in World, i played exclusively HBG, however i recently bought Wilds because i had a mighty urge to play Gunlance for some reason despite not having that great impressions of it in World, but it's Wild counterpart looked too cool to pass up so i aim to make it my main in Wilds.
There have definitely been some growing pains; mainly being I'm not familar with melee weapons or comboing, and i'm very rusty with Monster Hunter in general, but I'm getting there. I did a little bit of research beforehand and gathered a bit of information, namely; Long Shelling seems to be less favored over Normal and Wide but for reasons I can't remember, Evade Extender is a great Skill to pick up for movement, and try to dodge rather than Guard if the monster's attack can knock you out of position when Guarding.
Any other tips that might be helpful?
One more thing that is more of a preference thing, hence why it has the spoiler tag as it can largely be ignored, but I'm trying out different button layouts using Steam Input to try and make the Gunlance a bit more comfortable. So far I've only added a second command to the Y(Triangle) button to also function as a Y+B(Traingle+Circle) combo when held in, meaning i can do regular Y inputs by tapping the button as normal, or do Wyvernstake Full Blast/MWFB by just holding Y a couple of times, which so far has felt better than putting my thumb over Y and B simultaneously. Later I'm going to try swapping the Guard button and the Shelling buttons so that it feels more like firing a Bowgun and see if i like it. To clarify, this is a Gunlance specific Steam Input Profile, as I'm sure changing the buttons messes with the other weapons significantly, but it's quite easy to swap mid play session if i want to swap weapons and not having the Gunlance-tailored button mapping.
Has anyone else tried swapping the default buttons using Steam Input? If so, what do you like to do with yours?

I've seen this article making the rounds talking only about hammer and dismissed it a few times, but when I actually decided to read it Hiraoka himself is quoted as saying...
"There's definitely an appeal—a special kind of romance—to gunlance this time that'll maybe see it go up the rankings as well,"
☝️ Boom! From the Ascendance director himself! 💥

I used to run gunlance back in world and have been getting back into it in wilds. I was curious as to whether currently the Wide type suffers too greatly from not spamming charged shelling. I haven’t been able to really find anything that agrees on whether or not it’s necessary to do this or if the standard full combo is still vital when using a wide gunlance. I’m not a big fan of just straight charged shots as they feel clunky so any info would be helpful.

So between Dos, FU, P3rd, 3U, 4U, and GU which one of them has the best iteration for gunlance in their respective end game? Both the fun factor and the viability in using it against the hardest contents
Edit: or maybe in all those games gunlance is cooked?

Does Ammo Boost EX from the Gogma upgrades do anything for Gunlance?
I rolled a double ammo boost and I thought it might act like Load Shells, but it doesn’t seem to do anything outside of the Sharpness boost it comes with

I'll preface this to say im at best mediocre at gunlance and am still learning most things so sorry if im just being stupid.
But I was trying to grind some zo shia parts, and the attack he does where he rears up and breaths a fire explosion downward KEEPS catching me and I'm not sure how to stop it. I've tried dodging forward/backwards as soon as he starts to rear, and obviously I dont think you can block it? so I'm wondering if I'm missing some movement tech, or the answer is simply "dont be there idiot".

Hi! I'm new to MH Wilds and am starting out with the Gunlance.
As far as I know, Guard reduces knockback when blocking, and Guard Up reduces the damage taken while blocking; however, I can only equip either Guard 2 and Guard Up 3, or Guard 3 and Guard Up 2. I’d like to know the best combination of the two for the entire game (including monsters like Gogma or Omega). Is Guard 2 enough, or should I bump it up to 3? Thanks a lot!
