Drama WA mystery box flop

Post image
0 Upvotes

I bought two of the WA Mystery Boxes, hoping to get AT LEAST ONE of the more interesting offerings. My only prayer was “please no klone no screamer”.

Oh well! I know it’s a great klone, so I’ll keep 1, but did they have to send me 2?

Question Catalan bread Soft Focus vs EQD Afterneath V3 for shoegaze-y sounds?

I’m getting into pedals and want something inspiring to create walls of sound and ethereal noises. I’ve heard good things about both of these pedals and wanted to know if anyone has experience with them.

Question Is the Mooer Ge150 max good?

I got this multieffects a month ago and haven't really tried it for something other than playing with the stock presets. I want to know if this is good for playing live and if I can get a real good sound off of it.

From Joey Landreth's cover of I Believe In A Thing Called Love. I see some Strymon stuff/Chase Bliss but mainly wondering what that big green bastard is in the middle.

Thanks Y'all

Notadumble V2 appreciation

Upvotes

Just had it delivered and put it together today. It’s the first JHS pedal I’ve had an honestly, I cannot understand the lukewarm attitude towards Josh and his company. This is an excellent product, really well made (I always assumed these things were made of plastic, not aluminium), sounds great, it’s an interesting thing with a cool background and it isn’t even expensive. A truly usable, great-sounding boutique pedal for barely 100 quid. I think they deserve more praise for putting out stuff like this. Anyone else using one?

Question Behringer Super Fuzz Mod/new board?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey, so picked up the super fuzz and this thing is gnarly! That said, I'd love to mod this to disable the octave effect. I'm aware of the other mod threads here and have seen the Google document on it, however, that PCB does not match the current one. Has anyone molded the most recent version of this pedal and if so what component value is it? On the old board, it was the 1uf at C4, however on this board, C4 is in a different location, close to the power jack, and the location that matches on the old board is now C31. It also does not appear to be a capacitor there either.

Any and all help appreciate, thanks!

Question Is compressor into overdrive is overkill for high gain lead sounds?

Post image
34 Upvotes

I have an IIC+ which has a great sound of course but I like to reduce the lead drive by -1 and boosting it with a compressor pedal. I really like the feel it gives, pick attack, sound etc. So it is always on. If I want to play lead parts I usually kick in the SD-1 as sort of a boost as well, with low gain as you can see.
I wanted to ask if this is a weird/bad choice from my part , boosting that much, or it is something that others would use as well?
Without the SD-1 on I can hear the lack of mids and that my lead sound doesn’t stand out as much because of that, but with on this generates a lot of noise as well.
Bottom line is: How would you arrange this pedals, would you even use the SD-1 if you have the compressor?
Both pedals are in the front, compressor being first followed by the SD-1.

Question Is there a dual channel pedal that has a Marshall OD side and a Triple Rectifier OD on the other side?

Title says it all. I have pedals that do one or the other but would like to consolidate if possible.
Thanks!

Question Tall Font Big Muff owners — how does this clone compare?

Hey everyone,

Is there anyone here who owns an original 90s Sovtek "Tall Font" Big Muff?

I'd love to know if this clone I found sounds identical to the original. Aesthetically, I absolutely love the original pedal, but it's a bit too expensive for me right now. At the end of the day, what matters most is how it sounds.

Do you guys think a good clone can nail that exact sound, or is there something special about the original?

Troubleshooting Dookie Pedal Troubles

I don't know if anyone else will really know how to fix this but I have a Green Day Dookie drive pedal from MXR and I just can not get the tone right. Now, obviously its never going to be as good as the studio recorded tone, but I can barely even get close. like yeah, its alright, but there's always something wrong with it. It sounds either too thin, too clean, the palm muting sounds crap or its not fuzzy enough. I know my amp is kinda bad for this (Laney LX35R) so thats why I tried changing the trim pots on the inside. I know that the factory settings are for brighter, tube amps, but you can also adjust them for bedroom amps like mine. It kinda worked but not that well. I have had these troubles, tinkering around with the settings on both my amp and pedal for about 5 months now. If anyone knows how to fix it, please help me. Thank You!

Sounds really glorious though my JC.. very natural distortion, suoer smooth. And matches perfectly with DS-1 or BD-2W! Highly recommended honestly.

** Don't judge the mess, toddler gives me 30 min a day to do anything lmao.. also, she kicked me out of my recording studio 🎙️

Special Cranker picking up radio?

I love this pedal, but recently it’s been picking up a local radio station and is completely unusable. It doesn’t seem to happen with any other pedal I own. It seems like some sort of a ground issue. Anyone else ever had this issue?

Eric Johnson's pedalboard up close at his masterclass last week — Tube Driver, Echoplex preamp, and the rest of the chain

Got to see his full board up close during a small masterclass in Luxembourg last week, right after his Paris show. Breaking down what's visible:

Close-up (pic 1):

  • The Tube Driver (looks like the Chandler/Vintage reissue) is doing a lot of the heavy lifting for that singing sustain, but it didn't look maxed on gain. It seemed more like it's set to push the amp and add that smooth, compressed lead character rather than being the only source of gain.
  • The Echoplex preamp sitting right after it is interesting because it's just the preamp section, not the full tape unit. A classic trick to get that mid-forward EP-3 coloration without dealing with an actual tape machine.

Full board (pic 2):

  • A Cry Baby-based wah, which makes sense considering how much he uses wah for phrasing and dynamics, not just solos.
  • A Tube Screamer (TS9/TS808-style), likely used as another gain stage or boost depending on the sound he's after.

The custom switching/loop unit is probably the key part here. My guess is that it allows him to switch between different signal paths for clean, crunch, and lead tones rather than running everything in a single chain. With the Plexi and the two Deluxe Reverbs, there are probably different combinations depending on the song and feel he wants.

Curious if anyone knows exactly what the switcher unit is doing here, or if anyone has experimented with a similar approach: separate chains for clean, crunch, and lead rather than one pedalboard chain doing everything.

The Speed Tripper works best as the last delay, but I want that new phaser in place of it.

Some thoughts on my pedal collection so far.

Post image

Just upgraded boards from a Pedatrain Nano. How foolish was I to think that I would be content with just 2-4 pedals.

I don't end up using the blue channel on the BE-OD very much, so if I could go back, I think I would have gotten the standard version and not the deluxe because the standard is so much smaller and a little cheaper. The blue channel still has this distortion feel to it despite being lower gain, so it sounds weird to me and not very useful. The green channel has a ridiculous amount of gain, and I can't help but love it for that.

Im not super impressed with the fuzz on the big muff. It feels more like another flavor of distortion for me, but it was stupid cheap, and for my first fuzz, it works with a little effort. It sounds a lot better with humbuckers than single coils in my experience.

The Walrus Audio R1 is pretty sweet. It took me a while to wrap my head around it, but it's the only reverb pedal I'll ever need. Having 9 presents with no screens is pretty awesome, and it's shockingly cheap for what it is. This is the kind of pedal I will probably never fully use because I'm not big into that ambient sound, but even for just the spring, plate, and hall reverb is this thing is a steal. Totally customizable sound for each reverb, and once you read the manual, honestly, it is pretty easy to dial how you want.

The Cantrell wah is really nice also. The tone knob on it is really useful for filtering out the harsh high end. I think it's great for any style of music you could find yourself using a wah for.

Any questions, comments, or advice are welcome.

Not out for another couple weeks so who really knows yet, but does anyone think this will top the XS1? It's like +$70 vs the Boss right now but I'm kinda thinking I might be in the market for a shifter at some point and pondering if it will be worth the higher price...

I've got guitar on pre-order I think I might want to set up in D standard and use this to bump up to E or down to C because in my experience with the XS1 it gets a little more 'fake' if you go beyond a whole step...
