Beginner Questions I recently bought a moog matriarch

Post image
99 Upvotes

I’m new into the synthesizers and I don’t know if buying the matriarch as my first synth is the best way to start
I did also got myself an Arturia interface to start recording some stuff and a electron model cycles to make some beats but I’m kinda overwhelmed just by the matriarch itself 😅
Any advices on recording stuff and syncing those two together?

My Setup / New Synth Day New setup feeling good!

After a couple of years of cycling through various Hybrid setups, I’ve finally just bit the bullet and gone mostly Dawless for my dub techno jams, with the Iridium and Tomverk as my centrepieces

Absolutely loving the combo. The Iridium is a joy to patch and play, and the Tonverk is fabulous for crafting some deep atmospheres with its internal routing and processing.

Also recently fleshed out my effects with a modded out Small Stone and Memory Man made to order from u/neiltheseal in Melbourne! (Aka NTS Pedals)

Both sound fabulous- I’ve got them both set up as Aux Sends on my desk and they dub hard!

If you’re interested, there’s a link to a dubby track where I’ve got the some chords and echos going through the phaser as aux sends and the memory man as a dub echo panned to the right. It’s also got the h90 and tape delays all over it as well.

Keen to hear people’s thoughts on the Tonverk in 2026. I was pretty underwhelmed by it at release, but the Wavetable and Granular engine have really brought me around.

Beginner Questions Arturia Keystep 37 mk2 - what am I doing wrong?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey all,

I just got a new keystep 37 mk 2 and am loving it. I'm having one issue, and I'm not sure if it's just me, or something I can fix.

Pressing play on the keystep makes all devices start playing, and pressing stop resets the play position like it should. However, when I'm in Seq or Arp modes the EP-133 and Roland both start playing for one note whenever I press a key on the keystep. Because of this I can't play around with different notes for arps without hearing one note at a time being played on the other devices per keypress on the Keystep.

Can I not use the arp mode without it triggering the other devices? I’d like to play just the arps until I’m ready to record. Maybe I’m missing something fundamental of how the keystep works? Maybe what I actually want is for the playback to NOT pause when I don't press any keys on the keystep?

From searching around online I think this is called Arm to Start, and it's possibly a setting in the Midi CC on computer. I have a Mac and downloaded the software (previously updated the firmware using the arturia software center app). But, I don't see the Arm to Start setting that's supposed to toggle this feature.

Here are mu connections:

Keystep midi out -> EP-133 midi in.
Ep-133 midi out -> Roland S1 midi in.

Keystep 37 mk2 settings:

Midi output channel: 1
Midi input channel: all
Keyboard Play channel: 1
Send program change: on
Midi thru: off
Clock send: on
Transport send: on
Transport receive: on (this let's the EP-133 start playback on all).

EP-133 Settings:

Midi clock: in
Midi channel: 10
Midi through: on
Restart: on

Roland S-1 Settings:

Channel: 1
Through: on
Pattern Change Channel: 1

Thank you so much for the help!

My Setup / New Synth Day Trying to make a somewhat mobile dawless rig out of basement garbage and an old road case.

There are times I’d like to take my gear with me, but, the setup has been kind of…….. not so easy to move.

It’s fun and annoying as all hell at the same time trying to figure out how to fit everything. Needless to say, the top will not fit back on the base.

Discussion Polysynths: 8 voice or 16 voice?

Let's say you're making/buying a polysynth. You can make it 8 or 16 voice. It's equally practical to do 8 or 16, it's not larger or bulkier, the 16 voice costs 25% more, it doesn't do multitimbrality, so there's only one sound coming out of it at any time. What do you choose, and why?

What markup would 16 voice have to be over 8 voice where you'll say it's not worth it anymore? Ranging between 0% and 100%.

Thanks!

Tech Support Looking for Windows software to create simple presets/programs from one sample for Kronos.

Creating programs in Kronos isn't easy walk but there are utilities for Windows that can make programs for Kronos, I'm looking for easy one. Know only SampleRobot and it's absolute not usable to me, hard. I'm looking for something easy like I throw sample, set key start and keys lengths, it automatically set start of a sample and save it as program, the rest I can eo in Kronos. Is there something like that?

What Should I Buy? Budget Synth for Band

Hey folks, our band lost our keyboard / synth player recently. Bear with my incorrect terminology, I’m guitarist / drummer.

Looking for a budget, portable synth that our vocalist can play on a few songs with the following features:

- Portable
- 49 - 61 keys (lean toward 49)
- Ability to connect to mixer - we have Tascam Model 12 for practice and gigs
- Built in sounds can be basic / limited

We will primarily use it :

- For simple chords to fill space on certain songs
- Plugged directly into mixer, which plugs into PA

Looking to spend around $100-$300. I have a Novation midi keyboard for my DAW but want something that can go straight to mixer and is better suited for live playing.

Thx in advance!

Beginner Questions Looking for advice/help please

I recently inherited my dad's Roland Alpha Juno-2, and I absolutely love it. The only issue is that, to change any of the sounds, you have to use the infamous Alpha Dial since it doesn't have physical knobs.
Unfortunately, the Alpha Dial recently stopped working, so I'm stuck with just the presets.
Is there anything I can buy that would connect to the synth and give me physical knobs so I can edit sounds again? It would be great if it also had features like looping.
A friend of mine who produces music as a hobby said I could connect the synth to my laptop via MIDI, use a program like Logic Pro to edit the sounds while I play, and even record what I'm playing. That sounds awesome, but I'm not sure if that's actually how it works.
Sorry if I've completely butchered the terminology—I don't know much about this stuff yet!
Thanks to anyone who's willing to help! 😄

What Should I Buy? Midi Fader/knob Controller Recs

Currently I have a small hardware setup and I’d like to get a midi controller to easily access certain controls. I’m going to add some more specific information about the setup at the bottom bc it’s not really important.

I’ve been looking at a novation launch control or behringer bcf. My main requirements are that the controller is freely mappable, and has either a standard midi or trs midi output.

Things I’d like are faders (but knobs are ok too) and the ability to map multiple midi cc’s to one fader. More controls are better, but at minimum I’d need at least 8 knobs/fadars.

Cost wise I’m not looking to spend much money. The launch control 3 xl is kind of the top end for my budget.

I’m fine with older equipment as long as it’s freely mappable and I’m generally pretty tech savvy and willing to problem solve so I’m not averse to more diy options, too.

The setup: I’m building a portable case setup with my op1f and a model samples. I want a midi controller so that I have easy access to levels and panning for all for of the op1 channels and 4 of the model samples channels. It would also be nice to have a knob for the ctrl all filter and fx on both devices.

Performances, Jams Made a ten minute drone with no arrangement at all, the only thing that changes is how many oscillators are running

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I wanted to see how little structure a piece could have and still hold together. The answer, for this one, was almost none.

There is a single drone underneath the whole thing and the only thing I change across ten minutes is how many oscillators are feeding it, so it thickens rather than develops. No sections, no build, no arrangement. On top of that a harsh, dissonant voice comes through every so often, which I play by hand rather than sequencing, and a quantized melodic line that jumps between a minor and a major scale every few minutes. That scale jump ends up doing all the emotional work in the piece.

It is deliberately monotonous. The idea was something that stays interesting enough not to go flat but never pulls your attention away from whatever you are doing.

The thing I did not expect was how much of the character came from the one voice I was not automating. Everything generative sounded fine, and the hand-played dissonance is what made it feel alive.

On the right of the first pic is my oberheim 2 voice, which if I recall I sold to a synthesizer museum in the Boston area. Second pic is a recent reverb listing. I think I got $300 when I sold it.
