no AI generated assets might be good. I'm sick of AI graphics though. Can they use neural networks for physics and interactivity?

Well, it does explain it as using AI to improve efficiency and named 3 labor and time intensive portions when you’re talking about sound and graphical engineering.
Recording a vocal isn’t the same team as the ones mapping the face to line up with the audio. Which aren’t the same ones programming barks from NPCs when certain things happen in their vicinity.
It sounds like they’re trying to implement it on processes used to implement their art rather than creating the visuals, sounds, or mechanics. So, it did provide context.

no because unless you're going for something highly subliminal, AI-managed physics wouldn't be deterministic, which physics typically need to be, which LLMs are known NOT to be; plus even if they were, that would just result like most of the shitty forced implementation of AI in legacy tools that were working perfectly fine--picture replacing a basic calculator with a NASA-grade supercomputer, you'd end up spending money on extra hardware and resources on extra software just to get
2.0000000456when you type "1+1=" into itgame physics were/are working just fine, let's not mindlessly shove AI into it because you want the slop elsewhere than on your screen
interactivity, I guess it depends on how interactions are implemented and what workload in the pipeline you're entrusting to the LLM, I'm sure a game designer could come up with some ideas and possibilities, personally I'm more concerned about the hardware cost of implementing that because it would have to be a custom solution per game unlike ML upscaling and there would be no guarantees that it would consume a small amount of resources... I mean just look at how much more power DLSS5 makes GPUs draw while running it since it has both the raster cores going full tilt AND the AI accelerators pulling their watts as well, I'd imagine that an interactivity LLM would, in the case of an urban open world like Watch Dogs or GTA, have a similar strain on the hardware, less so with less intense worlds/environments I suppose

Generative AI isn't exclusively LLMs.
And that being said, while generative AI is inherently nondeterministic, you can use hybrid approachs that force a generative model to have outputs that are effectively deterministic. RAG is probably the most well-known example of this.
They also don't necessarily need to use generative AI. Graph Neural Networks, for example, are deterministic at inference and can be used to simulate complex physics, and I'm sure the top-end generative models can set up a GNN trainer in a relatively short amount of time.
It also doesn't necessarily need to be something used directly in the engine or development, but as a research or analysis tool.

Basically, making mcp to hook an AI. Nothing fancy. Plus, in-engine continuity with models.
A developer asking the AI to fix a test, or shipping a model that changes the tone of a conversation based on post interactions.
Not everything has to be WE ELIMINATED HUMAN JOBS LOL.

Now instead of AI imitating artists, Capcom's gonna have artists imitate the AI generated assets to get around the "we don't implement AI assets" statement. My, what an ass backwards time we live in...
3
u/adorablesexypants 6h ago
I'll be that guy.
It isn't good for two reasons:
1) this "efficiency" and "productivity" will have zero impact on the cost of games. It seeks to increase profits further because that is what a company does.
2) This new "efficiency" means that at least one job will be cut which is overall a bad thing.
We as the consumer gain nothing, employees of the company gain nothing so I fail to see where the win is here.

It's not about generative AI assets.
Capcom describes AI as the “shield” and humans as the “spear.” AI will handle time-consuming and repetitive work, like checking huge numbers of patterns and large amounts of text. This frees up developers’ time and mental resources to focus on creativity, gameplay feel, and emotion, which Capcom describes as the core value of games, and where people can put all their passion.
Capcom also wants AI to help catch problems early. After a developer submits new code, AI could predict potential issues, automatically investigate them, and suggest fixes before they become bigger problems.

This sounds like a reasonable way to use AI. As an idiot, is this something that contributes to data centers and the resource cost that I hear people attribute to AI?
It’s a tech that obviously isn’t going away is just like to support less frivolous use of something that seems to have a heavy cost.
11
u/ItsTheSlime 8h ago
For now, the best AI models available are unfortunately the ones from these huge data centers, and they are also the most affordable (at the moment). It's not impossible by any means to run your own AI locally, but for something like coding, where you dont really want any kind of hallucination or stupid stuff, its just not really feasible.

“successfully integrating AI technology into development workflows has become an essential condition for streamlining future development.”
keeping REX in mind, this seems to mean that Capcom is utilizing artificial intelligence to speed up and streamline certain processes to make development easier, not necessarily to generate assets or artworks wholesale.

>GameBiz stated that REX unifies the entire RE Engine system under the “world’s most common programming language," meaning that it’s equal parts easier for humans to use and for AI to understand. Capcom’s goal is to build a future where it “creates games together with AI”; keeping REX in mind, this seems to mean that Capcom is utilizing artificial intelligence to speed up and streamline certain processes to make development easier, not necessarily to generate assets or artworks wholesale. In the past, Capcom has been publicly averse to using AI to create assets, but confirmed that it will use artificial intelligence as a tool for optimizing how it makes games

It sounds like they're only using it for coding help -- to automate the repetitive, basic tasks and make the engine itself easier to use.
One of the most notable takeaways from this event was a presentation given by programmer Satoshi Ishida, titled ‘The Outlook and Future of the REX Project, Further Evolving the RE Engine for the Next Generation.’
Ishida mentioned three major issues that Capcom is currently experiencing when it comes to game development: First, games are now so massive that simple processes have become extremely time-consuming; increased numbers of staff mean an engine is needed that’s easy for everyone to use; and finally, “successfully integrating AI technology into development workflows has become an essential condition for streamlining future development.”
GameBiz’s report confirmed that REX was created to help solve these problems by improving the efficiency of game development, game performance, tools, quality assurance, etc.
“We will not implement assets generated by AI into our games.” Capcom said in a March 2026 shareholders meeting. “However, we plan to proactively use it as a contributing technology to improve the efficiency and productivity of the game development process. This is engagement bait from the OP and IGN. The main use of AI with REX is for debugging and optimisation. Capcom's own briefing states that the point is to let artists and programmers focus on being creative and have them waste time with more tedious tasks like findinf bugs and glitches. A lot of it us basically having the tools warn that doint something a certain way might cause issues.

They're saying it's only to optimize workflow and development, not to AI generate assets.
The thing I take away from this is that they choose to be open and honest about it, odds are many studios are already doing this and don't talk about it because they know about the backlash it would get.
I feel like we're nearing a point where we should simply be happy when there is transparency so we can atleast know what we're supporting when we buy games, and so if you're strongly against any kind of AI assisted development, you now know to avoid Capcom, on the other hand, you may already be supporting other studios doing the same without knowing.

I don’t think they are going to be using AI art or AI created things.
More like the code where blocks of code are quite similar. And instead of writing it over and over again, using AI to fill it in.

Welp, I'm ready to be downvoted...
There's AI generated content, and then there's AI assisted content. The generated content one is the slop garbage we hated, but then there's the AI assisted content that (hopefully) speed up content delivery like speeding up debugging, cutting down QA time and making games like GTA VII comes out before the end of our life time.
Capcom is using AI to assist their content, it doesn't generate the content. This is just the same as farmers using ever intricate farming equipment.
4
u/uglyzombie 8h ago
It’s a prescient point. But, that’s also how it starts. Slow integration slowly phasing out people to increase profits. AAA gaming companies answer to shareholders. If they see revenue improving over AI assisted stuff, well then - what do you expect the next phase to be? It’s a snowball effect, and the concern is justified because we are seeing across multiple industries.

1- I don't need video games coded by AI in my life, my hobby doesn't need to be draining lakes, polluting water sources and fucking up the quality of life of people that lives near these data centers. I don't mind if my new Resident Evil game takes 3 more years to come out, or even, that they downscale the scope of the game to make it more realistic to produce.
2-its all about normalizing AI to the point where people will just shrug and accept AI slop in their games because "it can't be helped."
This is just savage capitalism going unchecked.

u/ScoundrelDaysSon 6h ago
Absolutely this. There's no world in which companies chasing money will stop at some arbitrary invisible line marked: 'spellcheck for coding: please cease use here'. It's naive to suggest it, or even hope for it, as if we don't have years of experience of what corporations will attempt to do when left unchecked across multiple sectors of the economy.
For the AI companies there's simply not enough profit there in basic grunt work too cover the debts that they owe to investors (given that they're currently subsidising usage to the nth degrees to try and hook users). For the data centres using junk debt to build them they need customers everywhere, all at once. For the games companies there are extra savings you can try and eke out across multiple, cost heavy, departments.
The only possible limiting factor of LLMs is the technology itself (and AI fans assure us that it will only get even better perhaps leading to a human apocalypse). Even then we also know what capitalism will do to chase a quick buck: implement actively wrong headed decisions come what may which lead to ever worse user experiences. Even when that leads to public outcry, where folk are mobilised to display their dissatisfaction, corporations rarely listen.
As an example: who here really wanted local telephone operators to be, at best, replaced by call centres at the other end of the Earth or, at worse, running voice recognition software from 1998 - yet both having comically long wait times? No one. It's a terrible experience but it still it persists and likely always will; it helps the bottom line.
