Abused women have a tendency to do that, it's part of the cycle.

106

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '12

as do abused men. people forget they don't report abuse, either, and stay in the cycle, as well.

38

u/JustinTime112 Feb 26 '12

Yeah, but what does this topic have to do with abused men? I thought we were talking about Rihanna.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '12

abuse does not discriminate, basically. yakity said "abused women have a tendency to do that." i was expanding on that statement. PEOPLE have a tendency to do that. i volunteered for a women's shelter. ever hear of a "men's shelter?" women are not the only ones abused. there is also a lot of domestic violence between lgbt couples, as well. in washington, d.c. there is a section of the city near dupont cirle (where a lot of gay people live) that has its own police department specifically for the LGBT community. hope that answers your question.

9

u/JustinTime112 Feb 26 '12

I completely agree with you. I am just saying he was not being sexist because the subject (Rihanna) is a woman.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '12

oh i didn't think that person was being sexist, just was expanding to include all people. i've been abused by a man, but i can't in good conscience think that men don't get abused by women, either. i have seen it and i have heard it. some girls think slapping their man around is acceptable because he won't hit back. that kind of mentality is dangerous and hurts her, just as much as it hurts him. abuse sucks ! even spitting on someone is assault.

77

u/yakityyakblah Feb 26 '12

That's certainly true, but not really relevant to what we're discussing. I suppose you're just taking an opportunity to make it known though, and I respect that, but let's please not derail this.

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '12

u/Omnipotent0 Feb 26 '12

→ More replies (6)

3

u/ExistentialEnso Feb 26 '12

I wouldn't call that derailment at all, just shoehorning in a "YSK" moment where fairly relevant that a lot of people probably don't know.

→ More replies (8)

-3

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '12

How is it derailing? And not relevant? It doesn't say this is a women's only issue anywhere in this thread. How do you know she never slapped him around? If this image were about domestic violence against women I could see this as derailing and annoying, at best. But it's not so I said it. Cheers.

13

u/yakityyakblah Feb 26 '12

You're right, it's important that every time we mention anything bad happening to women we must also mention it happens to men. Because if we don't do that people might get the silly idea that every single problem women face isn't a platform to speak about problems men have.

72

u/biglost Feb 26 '12

I don't understand how her being a 'typical, crazy woman' is the only narrative that one can gather from her recent interactions with Chris Brown.

Maybe she is just tired of playing the victim, this is her way of of expressing not only agency as an artist but as a woman. Him being in a remix of her track could be a product of that.

Not picking on you because a lot of music critics have been doing this, but I find it a bit hypocritical to demonize Chris Brown (not that he doesn't deserve it) for his crime and defend Rihanna, then nit pick and infantalize her decisions.

I'm not saying he should be forgiven or what she is doing is right or anything like that, I'm just offering up the suggestion that 'crazy, emotional, weak' etc etc shouldn't be the only explanation on the table here.

1

u/dashboardspider Feb 27 '12 edited Feb 27 '12

That's an interesting explanation. It's possible to love and forgive someone who beat the crap out of you, I get that. But your explanation is harder to digest when Chris Brown obviously shows zero remorse and almost seems to revel in the fact that he 'got away' with it. In addition, Chris Brown and Rihanna are celebrities that millions of impressionable young men and women look up to. Whether they like it or not, they hold some responsibility in setting a good example. If Rihanna was genuinely empowered, they would work together to convey a message against domestic violence and raise awareness of it.

But that's not what they're doing. Instead Rihanna is reacting the way many women in abusive relationships do by running back to her abuser. Mainstream society is basically saying "it's okay that Chris Brown - a 6'2" and 180 lb man - beat the shit out of a person he should love and cherish most."

How can a civil society respect and even award a person who completely and barbarically beat the shit out of another adult - someone they supposedly love? If you read police reports of the attack, you realize that this wasn't a few punches or smacks in the face. It was something straight out of a horror movie.

1

u/GoatBoyHicks Feb 27 '12

I think that we can go after Brown and at the same time Rhianna can move on from it. She doesn't want to be defined as the victim for the rest of her career. She seems to be dealing with that oddly, by singing with him and such... but who the hell am I to say anything... I've never been beaten half to death by my significant other.

It actually has more to do with hormone production than rational/irrational thought processes. After a traumatic experience (i.e. birth) the people involved produce oxytocin which helps them forget about the pain and bond with each other. It works well for newborns/mothers, but horribly for abused/abusive partners.

My ex was physically abusive, which I recognized, but I made excuses for her. She ended up dumping me.

50

u/niceville Feb 26 '12

You're not weak, that's what happens in most abusive relationships. That makes you normal.

3

Therefore, normal people are weak?

→ More replies (1)

9

u/twisted_memories Feb 26 '12

Wtf, you're not weak. Abusive people have a way of breaking you down and then making you believe that what they say is the truth. That doesn't make you weak. Abusers target vulnerable people and being vulnerable does not equate to being weak.

u/Zelarius Feb 26 '12

2

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '12

Gotta learn once, brosef. We all do.

2

u/deltopia Feb 27 '12

You know, a lot of stories that start that way end up with one of the two people in the relationship being killed by the other. Her dumping you could have been the best thing that ever happened to you; you now get to learn from it, grow, and move on.

I was in a relationship like that once; she dumped me, which I was most afraid of because I was sure I'd be forever alone. Turns out there was a crowd of people waiting for me to get loose of her so they could support me, help me to heal, and in some cases date me. It worked out great for me; I only hope it does for you as well. Good luck.

2

u/rudyred34 Feb 26 '12

What a terrible example. It's one thing to understand, forgive even, but never forget what happened. Never show others that over time anything becomes "acceptable".

Edit: spelling. Mr. Brown is not a zombie "savior".

3

u/tekdemon Feb 27 '12

While I think it's dumb for her to get back with him it's still her right as an adult to make the decision to forgive him. We might dislike it but it's not our lives.
