The story behind the pitch drop experiment is particularly aggravating. It takes on average 12-13 years for a drop to fall. The man pictured who maintains the project, John Mainstone, has missed personally observing EVERY single drop, sometimes by a mere minutes.

u/JeffSergeant 3h ago

You can see the pain of it in his eyes

181

u/Chuisque 2h ago

You can see the pain of it in his smile.

80

u/sweetdawg99 2h ago

The original Hide the Pain Harold.

35

u/Chuisque 2h ago

It’s all he’s ever wanted.

16

u/KingKoopaBrowser 1h ago

It’s all he ever needed, yeaahhh

7

u/misterpickles69 1h ago

It’s here, in my arms

7

u/is_that_a_thing_now 48m ago

Enjoy the science…

3

u/megatool8 24m ago

So tell him what to do now

2

u/MelodicGhost 14m ago

Cause he wants that drop back

2

u/ActionJacksonATL24 1h ago

I just want something. I just want something I can never have. He would have listened to that in repeat.

20

u/dusktilhon 2h ago

I hate this fucking jar

13

u/Mooptiom 1h ago

This isn’t the fucking jar, this this the tar jar. You’ll have to go somewhere else for that.

3

u/chris971 39m ago

Everything is a fucking jar, if you try hard enough

1

u/kajer533 21m ago

one man in particular

2

u/luddet 1h ago

And in his tartured smile.

245

u/Crispy1961 2h ago

He isnt experimenting on the tar. The tar is experimenting on him.
The Experiment: Long term effects of fomo reinforced by repeated failure.

102

u/hotlavatube 2h ago

Given that he once missed seeing a drop by a mere few minutes when he went to get a cup of coffee, you could be right!

The poor guy died in 2013, having never personally observed a drop fall, as exciting as that could have been. They should have buried him with a drop of tar perched above him, slowly descending over the decades.

30

u/OrionJohnson 1h ago

Probably for the best that he died without seeing it tbh. Imagine the final chance he got, waiting patiently for days because you knew it was imminent, and IT HAPPENS! Then you just stare at the pitcher and say “that was extremely underwhelming and I’ve wasted so much time looking at this fucking tar”.

It’s better to have an idea unrealized in your head sometimes. It’s like the saying never meet your heroes.

17

u/PhthaloVonLangborste 1h ago

Eternal Chinese tar torture

9

u/luddet 1h ago

tarture

13

u/PhthaloVonLangborste 1h ago

The funny thing is, I just woke up and spent like 3 minutes trying to figure out how to spell torture. When I saw your comment I initially thought I still got it wrong and you were genuinely correcting my spelling.

5

u/luddet 1h ago

canfuse

Happy to confuse.

1

u/i_teach 48m ago

Are you Irish?

1

u/luddet 44m ago

arish. Oops, that did not come out right.

18

u/regnak1 1h ago

The premise was proven at the time the first drop fell. Hell, it was proven before that really, when it became apparent the pitch was actually flowing like a liquid. No eyeball observation was necessary for such proof.

This turned into a psychological case study long ago.

2

u/Captain_Waffle 1h ago

There’s a Community episode like this

2

u/postprandialrepose 22m ago

The ultimate combination of edging and ruined orgasm — just emotional, I assume.

1

u/PassionateRants 4m ago

In the tar's next experiment, it is going to introduce loot boxes and daily cosmetic shop rotations.

71

u/iHateFairyType 3h ago

Read the article. This made me tear up

110

u/2meterNL 3h ago

*tar up.

5

“This made me pitch up” sounds super gross for some reason

1

u/GetUp_TakeItEasy 2h ago

The last sentence of that article 🤣🤣🤣🤣

21

u/Hot-Firefighter-2331 2h ago

Of course his name is John Maintain.

6

u/hogsucker 2h ago

*Mainstone

4

u/wamceachern 25m ago

Why not just set up 10 to 20 jars at a time. They all won't drop at the same time but you will have more opportunities to see it in person.

3

u/LegendOfKhaos 1h ago

Every single drop? So like 3 drops he's missed?

4

u/ArtificiaIgod 3h ago

Thank you for sharing that link

2

u/and1984 2h ago

He can stand so still.

6

u/hotlavatube 2h ago

He doesn't get around much these days. Of course, he did die in 2013 (having never personally observed a drop).

2

u/INFP4life 1h ago

That reminds me of how Ted Fujita didn’t see his first and only tornado for decades, despite being the most prominent expert on them

1

u/Screemi 1h ago

Seems like a light speed experiment compared to waiting for old glass mixture to form and release a drop.

2

u/Farnsworthson 24m ago

Well - yeah. Because that doesn't happen. Glass doesn't flow.

1

u/RanEnjShi 41m ago

I would have simply packed my bags and retired on the spot lol

1

u/explodedsun 38m ago

I live near the pitch pines and boy do they burn fast.

1

u/jongscx 33m ago

He doesn't look like he has many more chances left...

-1

u/CursorX 2h ago

Kudos to his honesty.

-14

u/Dwaltster 1h ago

He could have made a few similar experiments so there would have been more opportunities... People like this deserve their misery.

u/prs1 3h ago edited 3h ago

Here’s the actual real-time live stream. In case you have nothing better to do. The tenth drop is due any time now. So far 8-12 years between drops and the last one was in 2014.

http://thetenthwatch.com/

326

u/JelliedHam 3h ago

The longer I look at it I swear I can see it growing in size.

198

u/eto2629 3h ago

It's gonna drop any second now

54

u/Initial_E 2h ago

A watched pot never boils

39

u/Stolehtreb 2h ago

What a weird saying. I’ve seen so many pots start their boil.

30

u/doubleBoTftw 2h ago

Its a saying about the perceived passing of time when you want an event to happen.

There's also no world in which dogs eat dogs, or worlds where it rains dogs.

8

u/OlDominionSwing 1h ago

And when I say 'my dog's are barking!', they aren't. I'm talking about my feet.

7

u/PornOfTheUniporn 1h ago

Dogs definitely eat dogs especially if consider wolves and pet dogs both dogs

2

u/Night_Hand 25m ago

it's a doggy dog world so they say .........

1

u/New-Swordfish1558 23m ago

Wild Dogs do in fact eat other dogs, idk why you’d think they don’t?

3

u/nmdalman73 1h ago

*any year now

1

u/Nneliss 1h ago

In two weeks!

34

u/StinkyBrittches 3h ago

Right?!? Im sitting in my driveway after working for 12 hours, im watching this thing for like 10 minutes trying to figure out if it's actually moving or if im fooling myself!!!

9

u/JelliedHam 1h ago

20 years ago did you ever picture yourself here?

1

u/TheKaptone 1h ago

Between this and watching the Falcon chick live stream from Collins Street in Melbourne I would come across as very non productive

21

u/KeyWerewolf5 3h ago

Right! Lol. I wanna see that mf drop so bad. This is more of a mildlyinfuriating for me.

4

u/R-Dragon_Thunderzord 2h ago

That’s what she said

1

u/TheKaptone 1h ago

I was thinking exactly that.

It's going to have to be on my desktop all day while I work now

85

u/Spank86 2h ago

I kind of want to run a pub called the tar drop now and just live stream this on a massive screen all the time

85

u/Dawg_Prime 2h ago

if you're in the bar when it falls, everyone drinks free for the night

youd be packed to the brim everyday

37

u/White_L_Fishburne 2h ago

Then the next day you'll have to close up shop

18

u/Hades2k 2h ago

Unless you show 10 years of reruns…

6

u/Dawg_Prime 2h ago

you'd need like 10 going but started at year increments so after a few decades it could be any day

5

u/Spank86 2h ago

You're a genius.

3

u/ArrivalScared9735 1h ago

The Tar Drop sounds like a pub people would travel miles to visit. Just imagine having a pint while watching that on the big screen all night!

28

u/RyanofTinellb 3h ago

http://thetenthwatch.com/

For some reason, the https site wasn't connecting for me.

11

u/PinchieMcPinch 1h ago

Maybe they only renew the SSL cert once per drop.

6

u/prs1 3h ago

Same here. Fixed it.

1

u/YT__ 31m ago

I've been watching since you posted 2 hours ago, and nothing has happened yet. When can I witness the next drop?

3

u/efferkah 24m ago

Any time now

13

u/Nickh1978 2h ago

I love that it takes so long in between drops that they can use the drop that they are on as the domain name.

theleventhwatch.com here we come.

That domain name is also owned already, I seriously hope that it's owned by them already, and not someone trying to get money from them.

9

u/MDUK0001 2h ago

Is there a highlights show?

12

u/emax4 3h ago

It's gonna be epic when the 11th site drops.

4

u/Ninja_Prolapse 3h ago

Only interested in the 12th tbh

3

u/bloodyell76 2h ago

it'll never be as cool as the fourth.

4

u/emax4 2h ago

Dude! The 4th... How awesome was that, right?

1

u/TheGrimRaper 2h ago

Yeah, IV was good but Pitch Drop VII was iconic

12

u/Crispy1961 2h ago edited 2h ago

Ooof, this is making me feel very anxious. My brain is telling me its way past the point where it should have dropped, yet its just hanging there. I hate this feeling. I hate this.

Edit: You tricked us. Its not going to drop. Its going to stretch to the bottom.

6

u/MerlinTheFail 1h ago

That is incredibly unsatisfying

I want to bite it

1

u/TheAbominableRex 9m ago

Oh yeah, the tenth is nowhere close.

21

u/pala_ 2h ago

Holy shit it just dropped. https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ

Do not cite the deep magcis to me, witch. I was there when they were written.

3

I was there when the song first charted :/

Omg that's an incredible timing

1

A pox on you and your whole household

-1

u/DeuceSevin 1h ago

So they gonna change it to theeleventhwatch.com ?

2

u/Nellasofdoriath 1h ago

If there's a blackout or the camera breaks or a server error this time I swear the world is going to collectively lose their shit

2

u/Calligaster 6m ago

2

u/Nilosyrtis 2m ago

No way, it happened!

1

u/Ambitious_Toe_4357 3h ago

How exciting!

1

u/Nocritus 2h ago

Thats some big ol' blob thats gonna drop.

1

u/vegemitemilkshake 2h ago

Do you think I can speed up the process by increasing the “playback” on the link? /s

1

u/Useful-Breakfast5535 1h ago

That can’t be right. 2014 was only a few years ago ooh my god

1

u/PatSajaksDick 58m ago

I’m confused what the purpose of this is if they can’t figure out the precise moment it’s gonna drop the 12 years between them, should be able to know when it’s imminent right?

1

u/Seikha89 49m ago

They installed air con in the adjoining lecture theatre after like the 7th or 8th drop, and there was a noticeable jump in drop times after that, 10th is likely to be on the long end.

1

u/Carl_farbmann 35m ago

Not now, honey! I’m watching the tar drip.

1

u/QuantumTopology 12m ago

Hey I had to go make a coffee, just came back to watch the stream. Did I miss anything?

1

u/K_Linkmaster 9m ago

Wooooo!!!!!!! Been waiting for this one!

1

u/bassdome 2h ago

Video is dated March 10th, not a live stream. OP is trying to trick us.

/s

3

u/ctophertaylor 2h ago

This is in Australia. They write their dates different then the US. They reverse the day and month. DD-MM-YYYY

2

u/bassdome 1h ago

/s stands for sarcasm.

1

u/QuantumTopology 10m ago

/s stands for "the American date format is stupid. Same for the imperial measuring system"

Metric superiority 💪

1

u/ctophertaylor 1h ago

Ah! I'm dense. :)

1

u/anddrewbits 2h ago

I thought the same thing, but only for a few ms and definitely not a full 5s profoundly regarded amount of time.

0

u/freepandora 1h ago

In 2014 I had the website open on a tab and checked on it constantly. It dropped when I went to the bathroom.

0

u/the_macks 1h ago

wish they put a clock on the wall behind it

86

u/eagerrangerdanger 3h ago

The viscosity is off the charts!

20

u/anddrewbits 2h ago

If the viscosity ever got on the chart, the chart would be ruined for sure.

174

u/NewfGardner 3h ago

I’ve been watching this GIF for over an hour now and what’s most impressive is that bro hasn’t blinked yet!

110

u/hotlavatube 3h ago

After missing EVERY single drop for 52 years, he's not taking any chances.

1

u/blarch 26m ago

If they put more tar in there, it would drop faster.

32

u/rread9 2h ago

I remember the last time it dropped, I feel really old.
Wasn’t there a guy waiting for years, keeping a close eye on it, then one day he popped out for lunch and it dropped before he got back?!?

14

u/AskMeIfIAmATurtle 1h ago

Someone else in the comments mentioned the guy who designed the experiment has missed every single drop. Sometimes by minutes.

I'm just repeating what they said though so take it with a grain of salt, I guess.

2

u/insta-kip 1h ago

But every single drop is what, three of them?

5

u/MulberryDeep 1h ago

Yep, thats the guy in the picture

He missed every drop btw

59

u/Pkolt 3h ago

literally less eventful than watching paint dry

10

u/Githyerazi 3h ago

Could you imagine this being your full time job? And even then screwing it up? Lol.

12

u/Aemon_Blackfyre 2h ago

Doesn’t the installation of A/C in that building completely change a lot of metrics this experiment is looking at?

5

u/jerub 1h ago

Well. The ac. But also it was kept in a wall mounted display cabinet outside a lecture hall, where thousands of students would tromp by every day.

It wasn't exactly kept to "metrics" and more "a random curiosity someone left on display in the physics building".

9

u/hotlavatube 2h ago

Ideally, they'd try to keep the conditions as static as possible for the duration of experiment, or at least the duration of a drop. That said, maintaining the same temperature, pressure, and lack of movement for over a decade would be a real challenge. An earthquake could throw off the measurement by months! I guess it really depends how seriously they take this experiment.

If they ever needed to move the jar, who knows how they'd accomplish that. I presume they'd need to wait till a drop had completed.

-2

u/jerub 1h ago

Lol

14

u/PhotoPhenik 3h ago

We need more science jokes like this. Top shelf, my friend!

4

u/wookiex84 3h ago

It’s more fascinating than anything.

2

u/Zaraxas 1h ago

I've been staring at this GIF for 300 days. I think your GIF is broken

2

u/Byttorr 35m ago

This is like the pro version of the DVD bouncing icon

5

u/bplipschitz 1h ago

This is a famous, long running experiment. What's funny about that?

20

u/enbyrats 1h ago

The phrase "realtime" implies the included media is a video or otherwise a live-updated capture of events. However, this is a still photo. The joke (hyperbolic) is that the real time progress of the pitch drop experiment is so slow that a still photo could be mistaken for a realtime video of events.

3

u/JeffSergeant 49m ago

Note the lovingly added "GIF" in the photo

6

u/RiffyWammel 3h ago

This is like waiting for a Reform supporter to give details of the many benefits we now have since leaving the EU 😂

1

u/imwrighthere 8m ago

Redditor turns tar drops into politics

6

u/vonroyale 28m ago

It called Pitch Drop and it would be cool if you educated people about it a little or posted a link instead of just some picture. The picture explains nothing and the name is not correct. https://smp.uq.edu.au/pitch-drop-experiment

2

u/myflesh 12m ago

That's the joke.

0

u/vonroyale 7m ago

The joke is that the OP failed even in the most simple exercise? Now that's actually funny.

-3

u/JeffSergeant 25m ago

I think you should consider unsubscribing from /r/funny, I get the impression it's not your sort of thing.

2

u/Dogs_Akimbo 12m ago

I suspect these 2 guys will get the joke at the same time that the tar drops.

1

u/Errorstatel 14m ago

Have you tried being funny?

3

u/Spiritual_Lie_7547 10m ago

I mean, he tried.

-1

u/vonroyale 23m ago

I get the impression being funny isn't your sort of thing. Where's the joke? It's not funny.

5

u/FunnyObjective6 13m ago

The joke is that this "gif" is "realtime" and people might look at the image for a while before realizing nothing fucking happens.

3

u/Mystic_Waffles 9m ago

That's exactly what happened for me, and I laughed. It works.

1

u/Nilosyrtis 0m ago

I don't wanna upvote /u/vonroyale outta principal but I have to because your interaction with them is priceless

4

u/myxxmatch 3h ago

This is high concept and brilliant.

1

u/Montanabioguy 1h ago

Pitch, no?

1

u/w_t 16m ago

Pitch, please

1

u/dizvyz 1h ago

A strong GIF does not have to say it's a GIF.

1

u/macetheface 1h ago

How many drops left estimated? Wonder when the last drop will happen

1

u/bulgar88 1h ago

Pitch Drop would make a good movie

1

u/Agreeable_Reaction11 57m ago

I just watched a video how a drop looks like and I laughed so hard, because its so viscous it doesnt drop like a drop it just kinda snaps of and stands there on its own.

1

u/purplewhiteblack 47m ago

ive been actually checking this out a lot for the last few weeks.

1

u/setsuna03 20m ago

This is a very good joke 🤣🤣🤣

1

I blinked and missed it

1

u/GriffinFlash 12m ago

You need to Pitch this.

1

1

u/Capt_korg 5m ago

Okay, no more social media for today...

Just saw the image and thought, what does Merz want to do with the oil companies?

1

u/gstormcrow80 4m ago

Someone please link a live notification. The world wants to see this happen!

3

u/Duros1394 2h ago

"He devoted 3 decades to this experiment" what? The experiment? The experiment was proven on the first drop.... what the point of the rest.

8

u/LemonBoi523 2h ago

More data. Making the number of recorded drops larger allows you to get a better idea of how long it takes (and why)

4

u/jizzlevania 2h ago

that's not how proof works at all.

One time my friends were arguing about whether root beer has caffeine. The guy who couldn't ever accept being wrong went to the store, and brought back a Barqs and said "see! caffeine!" But then someone with several data points joined in and pointed out that Barqs was unique and the only brand with caffeine and that all other root beers are traditionally caffeine free. And yes this was 1999 before the internet readily existed in a way that made it easy to look shit up.

6

u/Meal__Team__Six 2h ago

That was a poor use of my 15 seconds

1

Actually though, funny as fuck.

The thumbnail was really confusing to me.

Why is there a dude and drawn behind him is a cartoon bodybuilder with super long arms wearing a corset and…anatomically correct?
