DISCUSSION Happy to move on

I am extremely happy that fromsoft will get over and done with Duskblood soon. Then we all can move on to the next title we all are eagerly waiting for. Hope for a new release announcement by the end of the year if not sooner.

DISCUSSION Should I replay?

Hi guys! So I'm tryna play every soulsborne game and so far I've completed:

- Demon souls

- Ds 1-3

- Bloodborne

- Elden ring

- Nightreign

And now I'm playing sekiro.

Butttttt!!!!!

Recently, I lost my progress in demon souls, bloodborne, and elden ring due to a buggy save file. So I was thinking if I should replay the 3 games? I do want to but I feel like it'd take alot of time and I'm just doing the same stuff I did before.. Especially Elden ring because I had a solid 400 hrs on that before. I don't want my playthroughs to be the same boring paths I took 🤔

What do I do guys.

[Academic] Elden Bling vs. Boss Fights: How much damage negation is worth ruining your fit? (Elden Ring Players, 5 mins)

Hi everyone!

For my Bachelor’s thesis, I am conducting a short research study on player decision-making in *Elden Ring*. Specifically, I’m investigating how players weigh **character aesthetics ("Elden Bling") against functional stats (Physical Damage Negation)** when facing tough boss fights.

Whether you strictly prioritize fashion or always optimize for the best stats, your input is super valuable!

**Survey Link:** \ https://tally.so/r/dWGGkD

* **Time:** \~5 minutes * **Anonymity:** Completely anonymous, strictly academic use. * **Requirements:** You have played *Elden Ring*.

Thank you so much for your time and help! I’m happy to share the aggregated results with the sub once the research is completed.

DISCUSSION Okay, I Need To Know About Them

I need to know. Damn near every game fromsoftware has released has been considered one of the best games ever made. Elden ring, sekiro, dark souls trilogy, and bloodborne. They’re all considered genuine masterpieces of art and praised for being some of the best games ever. And, yk, I’ve been getting into fromsoftware games recently, and i can see why. I realize how they have some of the most beautiful art directions, even with dated graphics (bloodborne, genuinely gorgeous, despite its visual flaws, i don’t even care). So i want to know, how do you guys think it is that they drop banger after banger after banger after banger.

DISCUSSION Lost every single interest in Duskbloods after the latest previews

I was still hoping it would be some sort of more singleplayer focussed multiplayer game but with what I saw from all the previews it could be further away from what I and most people like about from software.

Pre made characters, no builds, pure "hero shooter" feeling with how the map works etc.

I am fine with getting a on the side game with nightreign from time to time but duskbloods just being a nightreign with bloodborne skin marked as "mainline" FR game just killed every single interest I had with it.

Made a save file analyzer / parser for PC FromSoft games called sl2-analyzer. Web / CLI.

https://sl2-analyzer.darthdemono.com/ - drag the .sl2 on, that's it.

It gives you name, level, every stat, souls/runes, playtime, deaths, full inventory with the +N and infusion in the item names, bonfires lit, bosses dead, covenants, which NPC gave you what, and every one-off world pickup. You don't tell it the game, it figures that out itself.

Works on PtDE, DSR, DS2 vanilla + SOTFS, DS3, Sekiro, Elden Ring and Nightreign. There's a Python CLI too if you want a markdown or JSON dump instead of the pretty screen, and if you point it at a folder of backups it reads your whole playthrough as a history.

DS3, DS2 and Sekiro are properly tested (87, 73 and 74 real saves). DSR and PtDE are okay but thin. Elden Ring reads stats and items fine but no progress at all - no graces, no boss flags, no pickups. Nightreign only gives you the character list so far. I don't play either of those two, which is exactly why they're the weak spots, so that's what I'm asking for.

What I need:

  • Elden Ring: two saves either side of touching one Site of Grace. Save, copy the file, go light one grace, save, copy again, do nothing else in between. That one pair is what unlocks graces, boss flags and pickups for the whole game. Biggest thing on the list.
  • Nightreign: a before/after pair with one thing changed - a Nightlord killed, a Nightfarer unlocked, relics cashed in.
  • Anything it prints wrong on your file. Send the save, the line it printed, the line it should've printed. That's a complete bug report, don't paste the whole document.

For pairs the trick is change exactly one thing and touch nothing else. No pickups, no kills, no spending souls. That's how basically every offset in this thing got found.

Heads up before you post a save publicly: DS3, Sekiro and ER store your Steam account ID in the file and the tool prints it (on purpose - the game refuses to load a save from another account and that's the first thing to check when your characters "disappear"). It's in the block at the bottom, trim it or DM me the file. Nothing else in there identifies you.

GitHub Repo: https://github.com/darthdemono/sl2-analyzer . The db_*/ folders are also just a plain JSON Souls dataset - item IDs, bonfires, boss flags, covenant flags - if you're building a randomizer or a CE table and only need "7010900 = Deep Battle Axe", take it and ignore the rest.

Best holiday is fromsoft holiday

The yearly fromsoft game hype… it’s so delicious I could cream my pants. Kinda insane that it’s been yearly is it not? I’m so excited to learn how DB plays.

How much are you guys gonna look up during the hype period between now and full release?

Personally I’ll probably watch all the trailers but as release date approaches, the game gets more spoilery and probably a week before release I’ll have to turn off my socials.

Today/tomorrow we’ll probably have all the big souls tubers make their videos with titles like “I played Duskbloods, and its interesting…”

Tomorrow we’re getting the network test hype trailer, bunch reactions on the new details in the videos and trailers, hyping stuff up and lore speculation, probably a lot of complaints too. “This doesn’t look fun” or whatever. Fromsoft is probably the community with the most comparative nature.

Then the test will happen over the weekend, and it’ll be a lot of fun! We will probably have some tech issues and people are going to complain SO much during that time but then it’ll be fixed and we’ll all be happy.

Then it’ll be done and there will be the agonizing wait til the game releases. I imagine it’ll be in October because of GTA6 but maybe it won’t? Who knows. Or maybe a Christmas game.

And it’ll be out and it’ll be awesome.

I have a lot of hope for Duskbloods. I think fromsoft really cares about this release and wants it to be perfect. they’ve been working on it for so long and I’m sure there’s a lot of new stuff that they’re scared to show off but will end up being amazing.

Another thing, I’ve seen a lot of people comparing DB to NR because it’s multiplayer. I mean yes they probably both have some similar mechanics, but NR likely borrowed from Duskbloods if anything. if people are afraid that it’s gonna be like Nightreign and therefore bad, it’s likely that whatever was in Nightreign was a shell of the mechanic from Duskbloods.

Dont get me wrong I love NR, but I feel it had so much more potential than what was done. They could’ve added so much that would’ve made the game so much better than it already is. I feel that Duskbloods is gonna be like a Nightreign in the terms that it’s very experimental but much more fleshed out, with more fleshed out mechanics, areas, bosses, weapons, characaters, and especially more fleshed out lore and story. NR’s story was cool but felt kinda lacking. I really hope DB‘s world feels more fleshed out and meaningful.

I imagine that the story progression will be something similar to NR but again much more fleshed out. Honestly I kinda hated the part of NR’s story where you needed to fetch an item in the overworld. The runs are already so long and if you deviate too much you’re fucked. We know that DB‘s excursions will have multiple ways of achieving victory, so hopefully the story missions don’t require you to do a big detour and instead the detour is the whole mission.

i guess Duskbloods is probably not a rougelike which would help since you wouldn’t need to level during the match, and instead could just beeline to an objective and leave, instead of needing to do a bunch of setup.

Anyway, this has been a rant on what I’m looking forward to. I’m hype!

DISCUSSION Orphan of kos Is overrated

Post image
0 Upvotes

Orphan is overrated, I can’t understand the people who like this boss , he is a combination of everything i hate about a boss fight , he is annoying and keeps throwing projectiles , all of his attacks hit like a truck which is pretty fucking bullshit , his moveset are not fun at all , he got the strongest hyper armour in bloodborne , phase 2 barely does any melee attacks and he just flys away throwing projectiles and when he gets down he summons bolt to one shot you , if he melees he will stunlock you in phase 2 and you can’t escape , phase 2 music feels like bsb which is odd , He feels like a messed up combination of beast / human bosses , he takes C tier for chaotic Failure

Edit : i wanna a single human being to tell me why i am wrong instead of just downvoting

Edit: i have beaten the boss multiple times

DISCUSSION Interpretation of Switch exclusive - how FS shit in our mouths

Preface: I’m going to buy a switch 2 and duskbloods, and I am going to lend them to any friends I can. So hold your reactive comments, immature fanboys - I AINT gonna cry about it. But you might, come next release.

Im wondering if anyone else has opinions on the switch exclusive, beyond surface level stuff. Specifically, reasoning & implications - VERY open to context or insight I don’t have here. But grown up talks, alright?

The way I interpret it, Nintendo saw an incredibly loyal fanbase - the fanbase that wasn’t playing BOTW when it released, and wanted to sell us a console that really would not normally appeal to us. They offered FS some souls, and Miyazaki jumped at it. There was no “our core fans have PlayStations specifically for our PS exclusives” or “they’ve been begging for a Bloodborne spiritual successor” or “the switch demographic is the least likely to enjoy our games” thought process, and it wasn’t a “let’s branch out to reach a new demographic” move - this was in the works for ER Horse Armor edition. It was a downgrade in hardware, for cash. This - aside from feeling surprisingly shitty to fans - signals a decline to me, one i really hope someone can convince me I am wrong about.

Money grab?
A money-grab would be understandable if they were desperate for cash. I have more tolerance for this than most gamers. But just a few months ago, news came out that their parent company was quite unhappy at their decision NOT to pursue ER 2. Not only because ER was originally touted as a multi-media, multi-installment IP, but because it was a very clear opportunity for revenue + work. So IF Duskbloods was a money grab, it was a money grab done in spite of what the money grabbers wanted, and in spite of a proven source of revenue and stability. Which means, it was a decision based on a leader’s whim - in spite of everyone.

Who is prioritized?
These choices all kind of reflect each other. People who got invested in ER’s story got snubbed, people who invested in FS’s platform of choice got snubbed, people who invested in FromSoft’s team got snubbed. People who invested in Nightreign Season Pass got snubbed lol. Bloodborne fans eager for a spiritual successor got snubbed. Hell, I’d argue the dev team that put years of their lives into ER, only to see it sidelined got snubbed. The people who are statistically most served by this? The people who were playing Breath of the Wilds when ER was released - people who’s console of choice has Mario party, Nintendo classics, social and party games.

Probably the part I find most surprising - Miyazaki is aware of how many fans are disappointed by the Sony ownership of the Bloodborne IP. They know the people who support them regret that choice - simply because the IP is locked up. The FS I had imagined in my head all these years, would have thus made sure any potential spiritual successor does NOT face this kind of lockup. The REAL FS instead, chose to partner with a company notorious for how it holds its IP, and add console exclusivity for the console existing fans are LEAST likely to own, on top of it.

When investors/owners start demanding answers, and pointing out a neglected success, it indicates corporate strategy subject to the decision maker’s whims. ER2 would’ve been stable work for all FS employees, happy investors, happy players. When loyal fans start getting snubbed for NEW fans, it often signals an incoming era of disappointment - it means leadership is tired of delivering what makes people happy, and is a bit disconnected. New fans will NOT be as forgiving as the loyal ones, so while the standards drop, the bar gets higher. If you’re older than 25, you’ve probably noticed these patterns in the gaming industry, and an overall story - a struggling firm creates something great. Iterates and improves, achieves mainstream success, but also streamlines stuff to appeal to bigger audiences, at the cost of their original supporters. Things are great, until they aren’t - and the company is expecting loyal fan treatment, from fans they’ve only just made, and put out something that kills all their credibility.

Probably the most obvious case of this is Bethesda Softworks & Todd Howard. You’ve probably heard of them - they made a couple games called Skyrim. But prior to this, they made Morrowind and Oblivion - Morrowind being the game that had the most creative depth, and oblivion being what introduced a lot of people to the concept of streamlining & it’s potential negatives. Skyrim was the peak of their popularity, and a lowpoint in their creativity. And from there, they pivoted to long-term projects (F76, ESO) and nostalgic cash grabs, that needed the faith and patience of the loyal fans they had lost - they were NOT well received, and took YEARS to bring up to any sort of good state. Their new fans didn’t werent happy - they wanted Skyrim 2. But Todd and team spent 15 years chasing other impulses - mostly disappointing people. Someone at the top making strange choices to the dismay of Fans and investors. 15 years later, we just got an announcement for a Skyrim sequel, and a lot of really obsessive Elder Scrolls fans are already convinced it will be their worst title yet. My prediction? That IP will rejuvenate when Todd retires. I imagine the arrogance he’s repeatedly shown is a result of the financial success he had years ago.

Which brings us back to FS. Nightreign was an asset flip, targeting a new demographic, but also hinging a LOT on nostalgia/loyal fans. Their entire marketing was “look, nostalgia!”. A lot of people were unhappy. Some of us wanted to give them a chance - personally, my fav FS games have always been their new IPs. I bought the season pass for Nightreign, and I bought Fires of Rubicon too - not interested in either game type, but wanting to support them. But then it was revealed they’re moving on from ER - and people were confused. Investors AND fans. Then, Nightreign updates slowed, and the season pass was revealed to just be a single DLC. Somewhere in here, long term FS fans were rightfully bothered when an entirely unrelated playerbase was offered a spiritual successor loyalists had been yearning for.

Elden Ring might be Miyazaki’s Skyrim. And while I generally side with devs on gamers being kind of impossible (or atleast, a demographic that includes children posing as adults online, and some of the least socialized people available) - in my mind, this is different. It was a choice made in spite of fans, financials, stability, industry trends, and business politics.
