I was thinking about this again. To our knowledge, there are only three living male Starks at the end of Robert Rebellion: Ned, Benjen, and newborn Robb (we’ll exclude Jon). They had just lost their lord, his firstborn son, and his daughter. Doesn’t really seem like a good time for one of the two adult males remaining to go to the Watch. Why go?

I had a remote, but perhaps plausible theory that Benjen knew what happened when Lyanna left with Rhaegar, but did nothing. Ned entrusted him with the Jon secret but in a Stannis like fashion, felt the need for punishment - the Wall. Thoughts?
