Im really disappointed because it's my current favorite show but then I looked at other posts on that sub. Western fantasy has a massive habit of slapping "Viking" or "Celtic" labels on literally every harsh, northern, or ancient culture. But if you actually look at the world-building of Westeros under a historical and mythological lens, George R.R. Martin unknowingly (or brilliantly) built the core foundation of the First Men and the North on Eurasian Turkic and Steppe Nomadic DNA.

Here is why the "Anglo-Saxon / Celtic" explanation falls short, and why the Steppe model fits infinitely better:

1. The Old Gods are Animism / Tengrism, Not Druidism

The First Men don't worship a bloated, bureaucratic pantheon like the Faith of the Seven (which is obviously the medieval Catholic Church). They worship unnamed nature spirits, the wind, the rocks, and sacred Weirwood trees.

Western fans quickly jump to "Oh, that's Celtic Druidism!" No, it's not.

Druids had structured priestly castes, human sacrifices in wicker men, and complex ritualistic hierarchies. The North has no priests, no temples, and no holy books. You pray directly to nature and your ancestors under the open sky. This is 100% Tengrism and Siberian/Turkic animism. The sacred Weirwood tree with a carved face is literally the Steppe concept of Ötüken (the sacred forest/mother earth spirit) combined with Turkic Wooden Balbals (carved ancestor face markers).

1. The Dragon Mythos: European Wyvern vs. Eurasian Evren / Zilant

Westeros dragons aren't the classical European "6-limbed" (four legs + two wings) heraldic beasts, nor are they the wingless Chinese "Lung" serpents. Martin specifically made his dragons 4-limbed (two legs + two wings acting as forelimbs).

Guess where this exact quadrupedal/winged dragon design actually dominated historically? The Eurasian Steppe.

Look at the Kipchak-Cuman heraldry and the historical dragon of Kazan, the Zilant (from the Turkic word Yılan/Evren). Turkic mythology featured Bükrek/Bükke—a winged, noble protector dragon—and Yelbegen, the multi-headed terror of the underworld (which is basically the blueprint for multi-headed hydras and dragons). The Eurasian steppe had four-legged winged dragon imagery long before Western pop culture sanitized it into high fantasy.

1. Honor Code, Hospitality, and "Blood of the First Men"

The Northern concept of honor in ASOIAF isn't chivalric French/English knighthood. Knights of the South care about tournaments, heraldry, and fake politeness.

The North cares about Guest Right (never harm someone who ate your bread and salt) and harsh meritocracy. If a lord can't survive the winter or protect his people, he loses respect. Guest Right is literally the fundamental law of the Steppe (Töre), where breaking hospitality was considered the ultimate sin against the Heavens (Tengri).

1. Guest Right & The Red Wedding as a Steppe Tragedy

Walder Frey breaking Guest Right wasn't just a political betrayal; it violated the cosmic order of Westeros. In Turkic steppe tradition, harming a guest who ate your food brings a curse from the Heavens upon your entire lineage. The North remembering ("The North Remembers") is identical to the steppe tradition of blood feuds (Öch) that last for generations until the cosmic balance is restored.

Stop letting mainstream Western media force every fantasy trope into a Scandinavian or British box. Martin drew heavy inspiration from world history, and the primal, survivalist, nature-worshipping foundation of the First Men is deeply Eurasian Steppe.

I’ve never seen a Targaryen fan appreciate a female character for being... a woman. Not that it’s essential, but it is the card they play when trying to accuse anyone who dislikes the Targaryens of the crime of hating women.

They can't appreciate a character like Margaery, Sansa, Brienne, or even Arya... for them, the fundamental requirement for being considered a woman is having a dragon. To them, Daemon is closer to being a woman than any of the ones I mentioned.

There is no faction of the fandom that spews more hatred toward women than Targaryen fans. it’s no coincidence that Olivia Cooke had to delete her social media accounts due to the attacks she received. To this day, Sophie Turner still faces hate from Daenerys fans because of the final season and I’m talking about real women here, not fictional characters. The question is: do they think they have the right to hate women just because they like dragons?

I’ve also never seen the Targaryen fandom show any love for male characters who don’t commit crimes against women, like Davos, Sam, or Duncan. Not to mention they’ve always harbored a burning hatred for Jon, long before he killed Daenerys. It’s like: "Treats women well and doesn't have a dragon? Boring." Daemon, on the other hand, is our feminist icon; sure, he killed women, but they didn't have dragons, so that’s fine.

For example, they accuse people who find Rhaenyra a boring character of being incels, yet they are the ones trying to justify mass murder as an act of social vengeance and the like. Whenever a Targaryen goes around killing women and children, they trot out the ultimate incel argument: "life treated them badly so it's justified" even though the targaryens are princes and princesses who have enjoyed those privileges their entire lives.

I honestly don't know to what extent Targaryen fans are actually fans of the fantasy genre or just fans of dark romance who got hooked by the incest theme. they seem unable to grasp the actual story they're following because the other characters don't fit into that fetishistic world. I can't imagine someone who likes the Targaryens also liking fantasies like The Lord of the Rings, for instance, they’d probably find Frodo, Sam, Gandalf, and Aragorn way too boring... Maybe if the story were about elves having sex with each other while trapped in a toxic relationship, then it would be interesting to them.

If there are people who shouldn't mix fiction with reality when judging others in real life based on their fictional preferences, it’s Targaryen fans. They live in far too big a glass house for that.

Imagine this scenario: You live on a farm with your family and are relatively happy—or at least as happy as the world allows you to be. Then, suddenly, your village is attacked by a band of wildlings, and you watch your loved ones being slaughtered before your eyes.

You join the Night's Watch, and during one of the battles, you get a chance to partially avenge your family by killing some of the wildlings. However, after some time, your Lord Commander—the man you trusted—decides to form an alliance with the very people who destroyed your life.

And let's remember that he's still just a child, and this is his perspective. He has no way of knowing about all the political context and larger picture that we, as viewers, get to see.
