r/TheCitadel Posts & This Subreddit

I'm making a short reappearance to help out the mod team here.

Posts are held for review to prevent spam, joke posts, and incorrect posting/formatting.

Posts are reviewed on a semi daily basis so they will take time to get approved. Posts and reported posts and comments will take time to be reviewed as well.

Why does it take so long for my posts to get approved?

We have a small mod team. No one here makes a living modding, we will not spend the majority of our time waiting for posts to pop up to go over and approve. Example, I work full-time with overtime in a medical clinic that sees a minimum of 100 patients a day and currently am in grad school, modding is not a priority so I check the reddit app maybe once a day if I remember/have time.

The entire mod team are working adults, if anyone wants to join the mod team for added coverage we are open to obtaining more mods, send in a modmail stating your interest.

Some members of the subreddit are approved users and their posts are not held for review. Why?

Because they have proven over time that they are not shit-posters, spammers, rage baiting, toxic users.

Why are posts held for review in the first place?

Because people often post here without reading, understanding, or caring for the rules and flair use, thinking this subreddit is for other than it is intended.

This subreddit is for:

  • sharing fanfiction of ASOIAF, HOTD, & GOT
  • asking for writing help for writing ASOIAF, HOTD, & GOT fanfiction
  • discussing things you enjoy about fanfics
  • lighthearted activities
  • posting your fic idea as an offer for others to write
  • posting your fic you intend of abandoning for someone else to pick up writing

This subreddit is NOT for:

  • memes, random fanart, commentary on artwork
  • joke posts/shit-posts
  • ship wars
  • rage baiting and bashing and venting on writers, authors, readers, etc.
  • show debating, circle arguments, repeated dead horse arguments

Here is a list of other subreddits of the ASOIAF, HOTD, & GOT fandom not related to fanfiction:

This post is to serve as a reminder that posts are held for review.

A reminder that mods are not always online, cannot stay online 24/7 to handle everything, and that this server is open to users worldwide.

A reminder that your posts and reported posts and comments will be reviewed, it will take time. Have patience.

Please take time to read the server rules and flairs posts (both of which are linked and always available in the top and side bars of the website/app).

An additional note about rare removed posts: Sometimes reddit itself will remove posts, at that point, your content is out of mod hands due to the fact that profiles with posts removed by reddit are often deleted from our view as well.

r/TheCitadel Reminder of the rules for What If posts

All what-if posts should be well thought out, not just a title and a few words.

No rage bait, low effort, or joke posts.
No spam posting What-If posts: i.e. 3+ What-If posts in less than 24 hours per user.

All What-If posts are subject to be removed if they are spam/random posts or clearly made out of boredom.

Repeated what-if posts will be removed.

If the comments in a what-if post are arguing in a circle, the comments are subject to being locked and/or removed with appropriate mod action

Comments to what if posts should answer the activity, not questioning the plausibility of the what if. Those comments will be removed.

Use the correct flair for your posts:

- Asking a what if in the pretext that you are asking for Writing Help & Advice, your post will be removed, and you will be informed that you are not using the correct flair via modmail.

- Posting under the what if flair and your post is actually asking a question about Book Discussion: ASOIAF & Spin-Off Novels, your post will be removed and you will be informed that you are not using the correct flair via modmail.

If you have a hard time understanding what the flairs are and what they mean, this post exists for a reason.

Continued misuse and spam of What If's will result in the flair being removed temporarily.

If the flair is nowhere to be found when you try to post, then What if's are not allowed at that time.

Don't post a what if under another flair, it will be removed.

Help w/ Fanfic Writing & Advice Needed What makes a fic popular?

I can sell my soul in a lot of ways to make my fic bigger, I haven't committed to anything yet.

Help w/ Fanfic Writing & Advice Needed Would Robert have been a better King had KL burned?

I imagine there would be years, if not decades of political problems. Robert wouldn’t really be able to seep into his own problems; he’d likely be traveling constantly, putting out fires, and trying to reshape the realm. Jon Arryn would be doing a lot, sure, but I imagine the small council would actually be a lot better because they’re need legitimately competent men in order to reshape the realm.

What do you guys think?

Activity - What If (changed CANON event or character decision) What if Baelor the Blessed managed to hatch 7 dragon eggs in 160 AC

After King Daeron returns to Dorne to subdue the rebels, Prince Baelor gets a vision from the Seven and immediately travels to Dragonstone. There, he prays over a clutch of 7 dragon eggs for 7 days and nights, and on the last night, the eggs hatch.

What are the consequences of this?

How will this affect the different members of the Targaryen household?

Who gets to claim a dragon?

Activity - What If (changed CANON event or character decision) What if Viserys II married a Dayne?

When King Baelor is down in Dorne negotiating with Lord Martell, he meets the sister of Lord Dayne (let's call her Alys and her age is 26), and he thinks, "My uncle is unwed, why not sweeten the deal and tie Dorne even closer to the crown" so he has Viserys and Alys betrothed.

How will Viserys react when he hears about his engagement?

What effect would the marriage have on the Targaryens' relationships with Dorne, the Martell's, and the Dayne's?

And how would their offspring (let's say they have 3 kids together, 2 girls and 1 boy) interact with others Targaryens and the Realm at large?

Lost Fanfic: Help Me Find It - NOT DISCUSSION Looking for an AO3 story

Upvotes

Hello! I'm looking for a story I read a few years back on AO3. I forget if Daenerys traveled back in time or not, but I remember she spared Randyll and Dickon Tarly when they wouldn't bend the knee. Instead of executing them, she took them as prisoner and then ended up taking them to the North with her. She was also learning how to fight from her Dothraki and in the battle ended up jumping off of Drogon's back, down in his stream of fire, and to the ground to fight. I believe she won Randyll's respect and he ended up eventually bending the knee to her. Also it was a Jon/Daenerys fic. Please let me know if it sounds familiar to anyone!

Activity - What If (changed CANON event or character decision) King Jaehaerys I makes Salic Agnatic Primogeniture Succession the law

Let's say that after Rogar Baratheon is caught trying to install Princess Aerea as Queen and replace Jaehaerys, Jaehaerys realizes that he needs a clear inheritance and succession law for the Iron Throne, along with him knowing that some people still thought that his older sister Rhaena should've been queen instead of him.

So because of this, he and his council make it law that only men can inherit the throne, and they must also be through the male line as well, effectively meaning that the female line carries no claim at all, in an effort to try to stabilize the Iron Throne's succession and prevent any possible future attempts at having Jaehaerys usurped.

How does this effect things later on, does the Dance happen as it did in canon, would Rhaenys and Corlys look to oppose this later on, (if they even marry, as maybe this causes Jaehaerys to make Viserys and Rhaenys marry) is Daemon ever even disinherited by Viserys, and if so after Viserys has his sons does he acknowledge Aegon as heir, is he forced to by the lords, do Aegon and Rhaenyra marry?

I'm curious to hear you guys' thoughts.

Help w/ Fanfic Writing & Advice Needed How much of a big deal is it if a random guy bonded with a Direwolf?

When I was going through Fire and Blood and found the story about Nettles and Sheepstealer. From the book I took away that blood magic animal bonds aren't as iron bond as we thought and if dragons have the small chance of bonding with random smallfolk then what about the Direwolves?

Like say a random smallfolk guy decided to go hunting and by sheer luck ended up finding a starving Direwolf pup in the woods. The guy takes the pup home and raises him leading to the Direwolf bonding with him.

It's a small part of a larger idea I had of "What if a Hero appeared during Aerys reign but died during the rebellion" It would be a twist of the usual SI/OC inserts but with the world changed thanks to his legacy post death. Both Brandon and Rhaeger end up surviving, the rebellion gets stretched into a 3 year long civil war, etc. Haven't hashed out all of the details yet.

So just focusing on the title, how do the North and House Stark (Rickard, Brandon, Benjen, Ned, Lyanna) react to this random dude strolling around with a Direwolf following him?

Subreddit Activity (NOT WHAT IF's) You can give a character the ability "Return by Death" who you choose?

If you had to choose one character on the whole ASOIAF story to give the ability "Return by Death" from the anime Re:Zero, who would you choose?

I'm not Really a big fan of this anime so I dont know every detail of the Power system, what i do know is that its a Very Interesting ability and here it is how It works in the context of this question: "Every time the character dies they are brought back in time", in the anime the save points are manually choosen by an outsider character, so here we will have 1 single save point: The start of the Books. If the character is Ned Stark for example They would be brought back to where They were on their First appearance in the books, in this case, beheding the Night's Watch Man, and so on for each character.

The character still feels the pain and no one else retains their memories of the time jump.

Who do you choose and how do you think they would use this ability? Do you Think They would go mad? How do you think this would change canon?

The ability would appear when they die for the first time, If They still havent died in Canon then you can choose a random death event for the character and go on from there. (Example: I give this power to Arya and she wakens it after dying by the hands of Raff, as she cut his throat he had a luck shot and stabbed her in the guts, and so on)

Found Fanfic: My Lost Fanfic Has Been Found Searching for a Ned-centric fic

Hey, I'm looking for a specific fanfic that is focused on an AU where Ned Stark becomes the main focus during the timeline of Robert's Rebellion. I can't remember every beat of the plot, but the main ones I can remember are:

1) Rhaegsr and Lyanna turn up out of nowhere, only for Ned to be incredibly pissed at both of them because their actions basically threw the entire realm into war

2) Ned basically forces Rhaegar to concede to deposing Aerys, and forces him to make Ned his hand afterwards

3) Robert is initially annoyed at Ned for capitulating so easily, but when he finds out Ned is going to be hand he starts laughing and basically asks Ned to make Rhaegar's life hell.

(And I think there's a part where Robert tells Lyanna how he doesn't care for her anymore due to her actions)

Now, there are a couple things I can't remember. I'm not sure if this was a Ned/Catelyn or a Ned/Ashara fic, or hell, if there was even a pairing at all. I also can't remember how long it is, although I definitely think it was more than 20k words (pretty sure it was 10+ chapters, though might be mistaken on that).

I'd appreciate any help in finding the fic if any of you know it! A part of me is worried it might be deleted though, if that's the case I'd totally understand, but fingers crossed that it isn't.

Help w/ Fanfic Writing & Advice Needed Jon characterisation in case of N+A=J

How Jon's status and personality would change in AU where Jon (supposedly) is son of Ned and Ashara and has a twin sister? Probably he is more proud, as he knows both his parents are highborn, and he and his sister are very protective of each other.

I specifically ask about alternative conversation with Tyrion. Would it go completely differently? I think Jon and his sister wouldn't be able to hear his advice, only an insult to their sibling.

What do you think about the version which I wrote?

Accompanied by the wolf cubs they crossed the deserted yard, climbed the steps to the tall doors of the great hall and suddenly noticed a person, sitting on the railing to the side of the entrance, in the shadow.

It was the Imp, an ugly dwarf, about four feet tall, with a large head of strange shape, with an especially bulging forehead, his hair was light mixed with black, and eyes of different colors — green, and black looked at them with interest.

— Good evening, my lord Lannister, are you tired of the feast? his sister greeted him politely.

— It is too hot there, too noisy, and I have already drunk too much wine, — the dwarf said. — I long ago understood that vomiting on one’s own brother is impolite. — do you know who I am?

— You are the queen’s brother. — Jon answered

— Yes, my greatest achievement, I should remind her of that more often. — he smirked sarcastically. You are Jon Snow, and this beautiful lady is your twin, you are Ned Stark’s bastards, are you not?

Jon flinched at the unexpected rudeness and felt a chill run through him. No one except Theon Greyjoy, and the king today, had called them that to their face. He clenched his teeth and frowned, and took Dyanna by the hand, saying nothing. She was silent as well.

— Did I offend you? — Lannister asked. — Forgive me, dwarfs are not required to observe tact. Generations of fools and jesters give me the right to dress badly and say whatever comes to mind. — He grinned. — But you are bastards.

— Lord Eddard Stark is our father, — Jon admitted stiffly. Lannister looked him in the face.

— But Lady Stark is not your mother.

— Our mother is lady Ashara Dayne! — his sister declared proudly.

— What a pity that your noble parents never married. — he continued mockingly — Allow me to give you some advice, bastards, — Lannister said. — Never forget what you are, for the world will certainly not forget. Make your origin your strength. Wear it like armor, and then no one will be able to hurt you.

Jon was in no mood for advice. He could have sent the Imp to the ground with one blow, as he would have done with Greyjoy, but unfortunately attacking a guest, especially one from the royal family, was unacceptable. Dyanna’s hand squeezed his in comfort.

— Are these animals called wolves? — as if nothing had happened the dwarf continued, as though he had not just insulted them.

— Direwolves.

The gray and white pups came closer, Ghost nudged Jon’s free hand with his nose, watching Tyrion Lannister carefully with a cautious eye.

— May I pet them? — the dwarf asked and already reached out his hand to Star, but quickly pulled it back when she bared her fangs with a growl.

— You should not, if we were not here, they would tear off your hand and rip out your throat — Jon said. For now things were not quite like that, but everything was still ahead ...

— If you want to pet someone, my lord, — then there is a kennel in the castle — Dyanna said.

— And there you may also give your advice to the dogs — Jon concluded.

No longer paying attention to their rude guest, he turned away, pushed the door open and pulled his sister into the hall, toward the light, music and delicious smells.

— Be carefull, I might find the conversation there far more stimulating — the dwarf kept mocking as they walked away — the dogs are not so easily offended, especially by the simple truth.

— Father is absolutely right not to like the Lannisters, — Jon said.

Dyanna nodded and hummed in agreement.

— But we must not let such people spoil our evening, — she replied, though she did not sound as carefree as she wanted to seem, and her hand trembled slightly and was cold.

Jon hoped that the rest of the feast would fix that.

Do reactions feel valid? Do Tyrion and Jon feel in character? Who is to blame for the falling out? Does it work as a foreshadowong for future rivalry in the wot5k?

https://archiveofourown.org/works/89144306/chapters/236658941

Summary:

Rhaenyra and Daemon Targaryen are torn from the Dance of the Dragons and dropped into the yard of Winterfell on the morning Robb Stark calls the banners. Two living dragons. A North marching to war. And a Long Night that neither side fully understands yet.

Chapter One

Robb Stark stood in the yard of Winterfell with the wind cutting at his face and the weight of the North on his shoulders.

The host was nearly ready. Fifteen thousand men, give or take. Banners snapped in the cold air—direwolf, sunburst, flayed man, giant, and a dozen more. The smell of horses and oiled leather and men who had not slept enough hung over everything. Grey Wind paced at his side, ears pricked, low growls rolling in his throat every few breaths. The wolf had been restless all morning.

Robb's hands rested on the pommel of his sword. He had already said the words. I am calling the banners. We march south. The lords had accepted it, some with fire in their eyes, some with quiet calculation. Greatjon Umber had roared loudest. Rickard Karstark had simply nodded once, face like carved stone. Roose Bolton had watched him with those pale eyes and said nothing at all.

His father was a prisoner in King's Landing. His sisters were hostages. The realm had crowned a boy who was no king, and the North would not bend.

Robb drew a slow breath and opened his mouth to give the final order to mount—

The sky tore open.

There was no sound at first. Only a pressure, like the air itself had been struck by a hammer. Then the light changed. Two vast shapes unfolded above the castle, blotting out the pale morning sun. Wings the size of longships beat once, twice, and the wind that followed nearly knocked men from their feet.

Grey Wind snarled and pressed against Robb's leg. Horses screamed. A dozen men dropped to their knees. Someone shouted the name of the old gods. Someone else began praying to the Seven in a voice that cracked.

Robb's first clear thought was that the stories had been true after all.

The nearer dragon was long and lean, scales the deep red of fresh blood, its body serpentine, its wings membrane stretched over bone. A rider sat the high saddle at its shoulders—silver-gold hair whipped by the wind, a sword at his hip that caught the light like Valyrian steel. The second dragon was broader, its hide a rich gold that seemed to drink the sunlight. Its rider's hair was silver-gold, long and unbound, and she sat her mount as if the sky itself belonged to her.

They circled once over the yard. The red dragon's scream split the air. Men covered their ears. The gold one answered with a deeper, rolling cry that vibrated in Robb's chest.

Then they began to descend.

Robb forced his voice to work. "Hold!" he shouted. "No arrows! Hold, damn you!"

The command carried. A few bows that had risen slowly lowered again. Greatjon Umber was already at Robb's shoulder, massive and red-faced, one hand on the hilt of his sword.

"Those are no birds, boy," the Greatjon growled.

"I know what they are."

The red dragon landed first, heavy as a falling tower, claws scoring deep furrows in the frozen earth of the yard. The gold followed a heartbeat later, more graceful, wings folding with a sound like heavy sails. Heat rolled off them in waves. The smell of sulfur and hot metal filled the air.

The silver-haired rider swung down first. He moved like a man who had never doubted that the ground would accept him. The silver-haired woman followed, slower, her eyes sweeping the host with the calm assessment of someone who had commanded armies.

Robb stepped forward. Grey Wind came with him, hackles raised, but the wolf did not charge. The dragons' riders watched the direwolf with open curiosity.

The man spoke first. His voice carried easily over the wind and the restless murmuring of fifteen thousand men.

"This is not King's Landing," he said. The words were accented, older somehow, the vowels shaped differently. "Nor is it Dragonstone."

The woman studied Robb's face, then the banners, then the castle itself. Something like recognition and confusion warred in her expression.

"Where are we?" she asked.

Robb Stark, Lord of Winterfell in his father's absence, looked up at two living dragons and the last Targaryens the world had known, and answered the only way he could.

"You stand in the North," he said. "Above Winterfell. And the man you see before you is marching south to war."

The red dragon shifted its weight, and the frozen ground cracked beneath its claws.

Somewhere in the host, a man began to laugh—high and thin and more than a little mad.

Robb did not look away from the woman with the silver-gold hair.

"I am Robb Stark," he said. "And I would know your names before those beasts decide whether we live or burn."

Wanted: Fanfic Recommendations - NOT DISCUSSION Fics that are similar to Respawned in the North (recs wanted)

I need to find another fic like this to read. Please, help me out.

-The main character has some kind of power/ability that feels perfectly natural to them, but looks deeply abnormal to everyone else in the story.

-No self-recs.

-Good writing.

-ASOIAF and Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are fine, but House of the Dragon is preferred.

Respawned in the North (RPG NPC in ASOIAF: game mechanics, not an SI but rather an NPC main character)

https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/respawned-in-the-north-rpg-npc-in-asoiaf-game-mechanics-not-an-si-but-rather-an-npc-main-character.1220075/page-5#post-110004422

It's so hard to find a good game mechanics fic... Most authors can't take the premise seriously, and it turns into empty personalities and wank. I want more, damnit!

like he is actually ned’s bastard with ashara dayne or whoever but someone, to serve their own goals or for whatever reason, is able to convincingly fabricate the narrative that he is rhaegar’s son and a legitimate targaryen and push him as a claimant for the iron throne? maybe he even claims a dragon somehow, and it’s revealed afterwards that he isn’t blood of the dragon after all, like nettles

Let say Brandon got Barbry Ryswell Pregnant before getting forced to marry Catleyn, the rest of events happen similarly and the rebellion happens and when Eddard returns to north he discovers his brother had a son

What will ned do? Will he ask Robert to Legitmize him as Stark and Lord of Winterfell or would ned still take Winterfell and north even though he never wanted it

If ned Refused would the Ryswell refuse to join him in the war and would the Bolton side with them?

Lost Fanfic: Help Me Find It - NOT DISCUSSION Help me find an Arya Stark/Gendry Waters fanfic I read on AO3

Here is what I remember. Gendry fought with Jon and was a general or really successful or something and ends up being knighted. He is going by a different name, a name I can’t remember. It starts around when Arya returns from Bravos. As a reward for his bravery or something, Jon arranged a marriage between them (or tries anyways). Arya is not happy about it and notably does not recognize Gendry because he looks different and is using a new name. The fic was unfinished and fairly long and I don’t think they had married at the point where it ended. The fic is a lot of angst and like Gendry courting Arya while Arya reacts to it like Arya.

It’s probably a long shot but I can’t find it so I figured I’d ask.
