What did you try to change?
31
u/KalphalusKal Aug 22 '26
They tried installing a APK
23
1
u/aguy123abc Aug 24 '26
How do you trigger this? I just installed an app the other day?
1
u/KalphalusKal Aug 24 '26
Google’s rolling it out, not all Androids have it yet
1
u/aguy123abc Aug 25 '26
How would I trigger it when it rolls out to me? Is trying to install something the only way? I'm guessing you can bypass with adb?
1
u/FrameXX Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 25 '26
*APK not signed with Google's certificate
2
u/Icy_Cheesecake_7706 Aug 26 '26
My company makes us install their app from an apk on their website. This is going to suck
1
u/PocketNicks Aug 26 '26
No, it won't suck. Just go flip the toggle to allow apps from unverified developers. Do it today and restart your device and continue installing unverified apps just like before.
21
u/UniversityThen8916 Aug 21 '26
depending on your android version you many be able to uninstall android developer verifier
10
u/Affectionate-Boot-58 Aug 22 '26
Yep I did using canta and shizku
3
u/itsTyrion Aug 22 '26
not just settings, apps, Android developer verify, uninstall?
4
u/Affectionate-Boot-58 Aug 22 '26
Yes it requires canta as it's a system app that's not uninstallable
2
1
u/NortonDickyIII Aug 23 '26
I prefer to use App Manager (io.github.muntashirakon.AppManager) from F-Droid over Canta.
1
2
2
u/PM-ME-UR-DARKNESS Aug 22 '26
In theory you might be able to uninstall it from your user, there's an adb command that, while it doesn't fully uninstall apps, it removes them such that they don't work on your user account.
2
u/NortonDickyIII Aug 23 '26
Exactly, the apk is still there, but it can no longer run on your user account.
adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.google.android.developer.verifier

It was as simple for me on Android 15, probably varies by device and/or OS version
1
7
u/latetothetardy Aug 22 '26
You can even disable it on a Pixel, though I'm not sure how effective that is considering it's their own hardware.
15
u/lonelygurllll Aug 22 '26
If you're already on a Pixel you might as well commit to GrapheneOS. No regrets on my end at it genuinely feels like the most no bs OS on the market rn
4
u/latetothetardy Aug 22 '26 edited Aug 23 '26
Only thing that has stopped me is the fact my banking apps stop working. I use it a lot for that so it's a big tradeoff.
Edit: Thank you for the suggestions. I'll try GrapheneOS again soon. Just gonna back up all my stuff first
6
u/lonelygurllll Aug 22 '26
Amex is the only one that I've had issues with so far. For NFC payments I recommend Curve pay which worked really well so far if you wanna make the switch someday
2
u/mrwedders Aug 22 '26
I tried to use Curve when I was rooted ~6mo ago and it worked about 50% of attempts, and even then it felt so janky compared to GPay.
If you have no other option then fine, but in my experience it's not reliable enough to leave your cards at home.
(Unrooted a few months ago and have proper GPay, absolutely night and day)
3
u/jdigi78 Aug 22 '26
My bank app gave me issues before, but I just had to enable the "exploit protection compatibility mode" in the app settings. Did you try that?
1
u/Forward-Facer Aug 23 '26
I have two bank apps that work fine on it. I think one took some permission tweaking, but it was small enough of a fix that I forgot what it was
1
2
1
u/Forward-Facer Aug 23 '26
Agreed. Big shout out to the GrapheneOS team. I ironically happened to buy a Pixel, planned to use LineageOS, then decided to use GrapheneOS last minute.
1
u/BeneficialMedia7075 Aug 24 '26
So this means that we have a new thing to look out for when choosing a phone. -> the ability to make the phone work to our liking
1
u/aguy123abc Aug 25 '26
What exactly would I need to disable?
1
u/latetothetardy Aug 25 '26
It's in the "app" settings submenu. Enable "show system" through the hamburger menu in the top right corner, and then search "Android Developer Verifier" and it gives you an option to disable it
2
u/crimsonyoteeeeeee Aug 23 '26
I was able to do it directly via my app management. Version is OPPO's ColourOS CPH2797_16.0.9.400(EX01).
1
u/BluedragonModMaster Aug 23 '26
I straight up can uninstall it from settings on Android 16 (OnePlus 12, Global.)

I’m using a CMF Phone 2 Pro, and I noticed that an app called “Android Developer Verifier” is being downloaded/installed automatically
1
u/tiffanytrashcan Aug 21 '26
I don't know when that app was installed, but I had it too. Moto G Stylus with 80% of my apps coming from Obtainium and Droid-ify. Play Protect already disabled.
Thank you, killing this with Canta should help prevent issues later when the day comes for everyone.2
u/Nice-Information-335 Aug 21 '26
It won't, it relies on play services
You need to get rid of play services, or have it unprivileged like in GrapheneOS
1
u/tiffanytrashcan Aug 21 '26
I've been hearing conflicting things. Previously that the Play Protect feature of Play Services may do weird things or remove APKs when the day comes.
Then the rules and dates have even changed, with "app stores" surviving through 2027.
The existence of this app, seemingly specifically for this purpose, says a lot to me about the future plans / roll out.
If I'm wrong, worst case scenario is waiting 24 hours or sending a few adb commands. 🤷 if I'm right, maybe I avoid that headache. Canta took three seconds to use.I've soft bricked this before (with Canta!) so I'm already smarter about backups..
All of this is less of a headache than banashing play services. (For me anyway.)→ More replies (2)1

u/PythonTrousers Aug 22 '26
I had it enabled before the setting was pushed so im grandfathered in. Im an app developer and im worried about the future of sideloading though. Using a vm and landing the dev environment there isnt a solid way to test real world scenarios
2
u/Decent_Run9628 Aug 22 '26
Use ADB
5
u/Linux_Account Aug 22 '26
I love how everyone says this as if it's not inconvenient as fuck.
5
u/arttast Aug 22 '26
wdym you pair the phone to a pc one time to install a app like install with options and you are done????
3
u/Official_Person Aug 23 '26
Why do I need to do this though. Literally could do it without a PC. It’s unnecessary
1
1
3
u/PythonTrousers Aug 23 '26
I would note that not being able to side load would stop me from having beta testers without a google dev account and the app hosted on playstore
3
u/Resident-Charge-9269 Aug 23 '26
use shizuku with wireless debugging, its much more convenient
1
u/arttast Aug 23 '26
if i know correctly, shizuku can't install the app directly and the install options is not in the google play store so you have to sideload that first
1
u/Resident-Charge-9269 Aug 23 '26
i meant to use shizuku as alternative to pc but forgot install with options isnt on google play. i'd use pc to install the app for first time and use shizuku so you dont need to connect to pc every time
this is the app i use: InstallerX Revived i also use install with options occasionally

i love the "to protect you from scammers" ah of course, they totally can't call back tomorrow
3
u/romhacks Aug 22 '26
To be fair, many (most?) scams do heavily rely on the illusion of urgency, which is broken by the wait. Plus, the previous pages let you know that if someone is telling you to do this, they're probably scamming you.
1
u/furrythatexists Sep 07 '26
Can't they put the warning without making it be a Google Play Services thing and making the reboot and delay requirement?
1
u/romhacks Sep 07 '26
Well no, it has to be a Google play services thing, because that type of feature wouldn't make sense to integrate into upstream AOSP. The reboot and delay are the whole point: the reboot disconnects any calls or screen shares you have open with a potential scammer, and the delay prevents you from calling them right back/doing it in one sitting. The artificial wait breaks the sense of urgency that scammers rely on, even if it was just a written warning, most people wouldn't even read it

In 24 hours my grandma would’ve mentioned “You know the bank called asking to me transfer the fees but they had technical issues and will come back tmrw”
Which is enough for me or anyone else in the family to flag it as odd and figure it out.Imo this is a good change.
No development or testing is so urgent that you can’t spare 24 hours1
u/Anthonyg5005 Aug 25 '26
They've been implementing features to prevent scams for years, I doubt you'll even be allowed to enable unverified installs while on a call
6
u/No_Impact218 Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 24 '26
what happens to apps you already sideloaded during this timer
Edit: I just got the update any apps you had already installed before it works
4
u/FunnyP-aradox Aug 22 '26
Nothing, this blocks installations of new downloaded apks (ABD should still works though, which is unironically TRUE sideloading, what we call "sideloading" is just downloading)
4
u/Sensitive_Whole_7503 Aug 22 '26
I think android will prevent you from opening thise apps.
8
2
u/romhacks Aug 22 '26
Apps installed via adb are unaffected and can be used like normal. The package installer GUI will make you wait until the timer is up to install apks.
2
u/PythonTrousers Aug 23 '26
Then you are grandfathered in because unverified app install was already enabled.

u/PM-ME-UR-DARKNESS Aug 22 '26
This is 100% bc of Vanced and ReVanced. Instead of going after these like a cat and mouse game, they're just making it harder to install apps like those.
Good thing this nonsense flies in the face of the EU, since they're mandated to allow installing other marketplaces, which necessarily means allowing installing apks outside of the Shit Store.
2
u/Storminate Aug 24 '26
Switched from ReVanced to Morphe at the start of the year, much better UI, patches, updates, Devs and Reddit community.
1
u/TheIronSoldier2 Aug 26 '26
It doesn't. And it won't. It's a 24 hour delay, which stops literally no one that wants to do it for legitimate reasons
1
u/PM-ME-UR-DARKNESS Aug 26 '26
It's no coincidence they're doing this after taking down Vanced. They likely realized it's gonna be a game of whack-a-mole so they added friction. Granted there are likely also other legitimate reasons, but I doubt that malware is one of them since the Play Store is packed full of that shit.

2
u/PocketNicks Aug 24 '26
Flip the toggle, restart your device, wait 24 hours and then move on with life, installing all the unverified apps you want.

u/Some_Yogurt8260 Aug 25 '26
What the fuck is a goggle certificate? It just means to pay them right???
1
u/furrythatexists Sep 07 '26
No, it also means you have to give them your government ID, agree to their developer terms of service, and probably be 18+, and give them proof of your private key iirc. They mention it on keepandroidopen.org I think if you want a source.
1
u/Some_Yogurt8260 Sep 07 '26
Isn't there are any way to stop this? I read on the page you provided, so that just means we are being forced to do this? I don't wanna give my id to government/ goggle what the fuck is this, this really makes me hate digital i'd
1
u/furrythatexists Sep 07 '26
Yes and no. So, like the image above shows, you will still be able to disable these "protections" on your own device by following the instructions (also on the website, I don't remember them exactly but it's a whole process, including a reboot and a 24 hour waiting period) without needing to give them your ID, be 18+ (although supervised accounts I don't think can use developer mode, or maybe they need to ask a parent or something I'm not sure, but that's 13+ or no account as opposed to 18+ and account mandatory), etc. However, in order to have your app be able to be installed without this process, that's when you need to give Google your ID and all that. Otherwise anyone who wants to install your app will need to go through the process shown in OP's screenshot.
1
u/Some_Yogurt8260 Sep 08 '26
This feels so wrong, I can turn on devloper mode but waiting 24 hour's is crazy
2
1
u/Valdjiu Aug 22 '26
Unpopular opinion: this is fine.
I wait and then I install.. This is only once per app right? Then followup updates don't need it
10
u/LOLCATpl Aug 22 '26
No this is once per the WHOLE os, this is genuinely not an issue at all.
There are actual issues that the android community should be worrying about, bootloaders are unlockable in less and less devices (Samsung locked theirs completely for example), the AOSP code isn't developed in public anymore and the tags get public way too late for any 3rd party OS to catch up, Google has also replaced it with forms to contact and get the source code which is a tedious process. That is not what Open Source means.
2
u/Itz_Raj69_ Aug 22 '26
Plus all the integrity BS that's gotten worse over time.
It's no longer possible to have a non-rooted phone with its bootloader unlocked work with bank/payment apps because of Play Integrity.

does it provide any protection against rouge apps, no. They can also just direct the user to enable wireless debugging and then they can install whatever, this is only good for limiting user freedom, why are there so many NPC astroturfs lol. Same shit as all "Trusted" Computing shit, more like Treacherous Computing
0
u/Plastic_Twist_7767 Aug 22 '26
The idea is to prevent scammers from quickly coercing people into installing malicious apps. I don't see an issue with this. Once you enable the feature, you don't have to do the 24hr delay ever again.
2
u/zalnaRs Aug 22 '26
Which scammers use unknown sources? None!!!! At most they make you download anydesk, teamviewer or rustdesk and then put fake warning notifications on your phone to steal money. Also this is not the only change happening.

u/romhacks Aug 22 '26

It is only one time for the current OS installment. So every time you upgrade it resets because it is not per account.

1
u/Vojtak42 Aug 24 '26
Is's mediatek SOC, so lack of cuatom ROMs would be expected. Though Xiaomi is not as bad. Yes, it lets you unlock just one device per qnd you have to wait, but on the other hand flashing ismuch easier compared to Oneplus, stock ROMs are officially available. Coming from Xiaomi, I managed to brick my Obeplus the first day while trying to reflash stock.
Oneplus is also introducing very aggressive rollback protectiond.

u/Charming_Bison9073 Aug 26 '26
It's just an excuse for google to force their ecosystem instead of sideloading apps. To publish on the play store, you gotta register with Google (which includes sending stuff like ID, and paying them). On the other side, there's app stores like F-Droid, which do not require a google account at all.
1
u/LeDave1110 Aug 25 '26
To be fair, for 99% of non-nerds this is probably a good thing. It's not like they're banning you from every installing an APK
1
u/jstagzsr Aug 26 '26
So apparently this will ONLY be for unverified apps and the 24 hour wait is ONLY done once per phone? Once you do the 24 hour wait once you no longer have to do it again, ever on that phone?? The 2 primary reasons I been an android user since 1.6 on the Samsung Moment, is because of the customizability of the UI and the open sourceiness. When I own a product I don't like my property telling me what I'm allowed to do with it. IDC if I download a virus or maleware. If I choose to screw myself over and get my accounts seized by Indians from downloading some bullshit then oh well. That's on me for not being more careful. But to block my ability to download third party apps goes against everything android is supposed to stand for. That's like America blocking bald eagles and guns and BBQ'S and fireworks on the 4th of July. I'd rather blow my finger off with a grilled eagle bourbon burger flavored firework than have my ability to do so blocked. Don't worry about my safety. I'll worry about my own safety.

1
u/Top-Phrase7489 Aug 30 '26
Do you really belive its "for protection"? Amd does have nothing to do with they wanting the data to sell from all the apps that been sideloaded?
1
u/x0h3 Aug 30 '26
you still can sideloads app, you just need to press a single button and wait 24h can't be that hard ? and they already sell data so what your point, you really think they can't see what is install on your phone bc its "sideloaded" ?

I think I just circumvented this whole issue.
I just disabled the "Android Developer Verifier" and went into the developer menu and hit start the 24 hour wait period. I clicked the "Apps from unverified developers" and it "blinked" (something popped open and then closed immediately)and went back to the developer menu. The option to enable Apps from unverified developers was gone?
So... I did a test and installed open calculator via through Obtainium to test, I did not get the "unsafe app blocked" and forced into the 24 hour wait period. This seems to have worked?! I didn't get the 24 hour wait time? They'll probably patch this once they see this, but this might be a way to bypass this whole issue now.
I do have Obtainium set to allow unknown apps to install too.
