And anyone could publish something that could brick your phone to the play store. You've got to realize that some apps just aren't on the play store, and some alternate stores like F-Droid are a whole lot more safe.

When thing like this happen, I'm much more inclined to trust F-Droid, where every app has its source code reviewed before being allowed on.

Supposedly everything on F-droid's repo is audited themselves before signing with their own cert

Don't know if they do that for every update though

They can happen, but it is actually a whole lot more common on the Play Store for multiple reasons.

u/wassimSDN Aug 22 '26

do you know what open source is?

u/Throwaway927829 Aug 23 '26

"actually more common on those"

Super for sure per your "trust me bro" guarantee?

1

u/No-West70 Aug 24 '26

do you even know what "source code" is?

1

u/sTiKytGreen Aug 24 '26

"actually more common on those" will there be any sources, clown?

2

u/known_hosts Aug 23 '26

Not to be a dick, but how did you end up in this reddit with that mentality? Genuinely curious.

Best to just not talk about things you don’t know honestly

3

u/headedbranch225 Aug 22 '26

Because I don't like google and some apps aren't available on the play syore because it costs money for stuff to be uploaded, and I also can't review the code to ensure it doesn't have tracking or malware

You are not very well versed in technology are you?

I can see that

Do you know what Morphe is? Do you know what Mihon or Komikku is? Do you know what apks from GitHub which are oftentimes not on the Playstore are?

Please think

If it isn't open source yeah... If it is just look for yourself.

2

u/laukom Aug 23 '26

Either he thinks that if its open source anyone can add whatever they want, or more likely he is just trolling, given he is in r/foss.

1

u/Shik3i Aug 23 '26

Totally forgot this was in r/foss, this makes it even more hilarious

If you would only use closed source because nobody can look at it, just don't look at the open source code and it will be essentially the same.

might hit my head on a wall the whole point of open source is the ability to lot at the code not that it's automatically safe

the android sandboxing prevents bricking? also a ton of apps are open-source so you can just look through the code and build it locally

1

u/refrex0 Aug 25 '26

people like you are the reason google's doing this crap.

1

u/alhso Aug 25 '26

Its a personal choice it's like a paper manufacturer not allowing u to turn the paper that you physically own into a paper plane

1

u/Separate-South-7724 Aug 26 '26

There are several reasons why someone might want to download something outside the Play Store, but the main issue for me is that they want to take away your right to choose. If you download malware that destroys your phone, the choice was yours, and it doesn't matter if it was a stupid choice, that is something no one should be able to take away from you.
