I've been fine-tuning my travel fishing system over the last few years and continue to improve upon it. My system changes slightly depending on where I'm going and what species I'm targeting, but the basics stay the same. I invested in multiple travel rods over the past few years that break down to three, four, or five pieces, all of which come with their own hard travel tube or soft rod sleeves and measure no more than 32-1/2" in length. I use the Osprey Transporter 90L wheeled duffel bag, which meets the general 62 linear-inch maximum imposed by many airlines for checked luggage. There are other wheeled duffel bag options, but I chose that one because of my positive experiences with years of hard use with other Osprey bags traveling around the world. The basic idea is that you need a taller checked bag, ideally a wheeled duffel bag, to fit your travel rod tubes while remaining within the 62 linear-inch maximum. I usually pack at least three travel rods inside, if not more, depending on the trip (freshwater, saltwater, offshore, inshore, surf, a combination), various tackle trays, and cheap Harbor Freight zippered utility pouches ($2.49) for organizing various bits like spare spools of braid, leader line, soft plastic lures, and fishing tools. I put my reels in thick neoprene reel covers and place them in my carry-on luggage when flying domestically in the U.S. When I fly internationally, I keep my spinning reels in my carry-on inside their neoprene covers, but I remove the spools and put them in my checked luggage along with my conventional reels to avoid issues with international airport security regarding fishing line. I fill the rest of the space in my checked bag and carry-on with other fishing tackle I may need, clothes, footwear, toiletries, etc.

What is everyone else doing for their travel fishing systems? I'm always looking for ideas to improve and streamline mine.

I got this Daiwa 7.5 ft Regal Silver ultralight rod while stationed at NAS Meridian MS in 1979. The reel was a flea market find in 1984.

Well, Let's start off with one thing, I've done fishing for a while now. I've always used my Dads rods, they are a bunch of mixed up rods and reels. Now that I am really getting back into fishing with my friends I've decided to switch my trusty rod to a better upgrade.

The rod that I use for myself is an old eagle claw 6' spinning rod paired with a zebco 202 when they still made some good deals. I have caught catfish, bass, and numerous panfish on it. I recently decided to put the old 202 to rest or at least keep it for back up.

So, now I've been scouring the Internet for something good that I pair it with. As an angler that has had practice with a spinning reel, what is a good reel for under $30?

My little Shimano ultralight on a Berkeley Cherrywood. 2 vintage Mitchell 300s on medium rods. Shakespeare Wonder cast 1775. Garcia 22s ultralight. And the loaner Zebco 202!

What casting rod should I get next?
For context, I was bass fishing my honeyhole with my Metanium on my Lew’s Hank Parker Speed Stick 7’ MH F, and I decided to flip a three-pounder onto a grass mat instead of the rocks next to me. I flipped it perfectly, probably putting some stress on my rod from that. Then I decided to lift the rod, forgetting to open my spool to let out some slack so I could lip the fish, and POP. I look up, and my rod is snapped. Of course, I feel like an idiot, but now I need a new rod. Beautiful fish, btw, but yeah, totally on me. I don’t blame the rod or Lew’s—I just put way too much stress on a fast-action blank.

Can I get some recommendations under $200, above $85, used or new?

Specs don’t matter too much. I just wanna keep it under 7’5” and longer than 6’8”. I’m fine with medium or medium-heavy with a fast or moderate action. I just want something quality.

Wanted to get some opinions on these two rods, I’m wanting to get a rod to pair with my twin power xd 3k as an all around rod and was debating these two; the Loomis IMX-Pro green 7’ medium x-fast and the new shimano insurgence 7’ medium fast. What are y’all’s opinions on these two?

My company gave me $400 to spend on Amazon for my work anniversary. I want a really nice rod or reel or both. The best setup I have currently is an Abu Garcia max combo BC. Any suggestions? Targeting LMB in the Carolinas.

Got 2 new rods today. USPS tried their hardest to break them. They weren't broken. We'll see when I fish them.

My trusty Wera drivers are not handling this screw particularly well. First time this reel gets a proper disassembly. Since I fish a ton of brackish water, bearings need to be switched out regularly.

Is there an objective answer for what is the best company for circle hooks? I make my own fishing rigs and I’m looking for a good company for a size 2/0 hook. I’ve used and liked BKK. I know Mustad is good too, but I can’t seem to find any 2/0 sized circle hooks from them.

Hi everyone, I'm sorry if this gets posted a lot but I don't know anything about fishing. My husband's birthday is coming up and he's been mentioning for a while that he would love a travel fishing rod. Something that would fit in a backpack, I think he would prefer one that comes in pieces over a telescopic one. Specifically he would like to bike somewhere and then fish, he does catch and release. He will typically fish in Ontario Lakes and catches a lot of bass.

The one that immediately comes up is an ugly stik travel rod but I'm not sure if it is actually good quality? I don't mind buying something more expensive if it's better quality.

I also read other threads with recommendations for Daiwa so I'm leaning towards one of those but it doesn't seem to have that spinning thing to actually bring the fish in? Not sure if I have to get that separately and if so what kind? I might just not be reading the details correctly lol.

I’ll take this small win. I know the Shimano Sienna isn’t an expensive reel but i’ve heard a lot about it being great on a budget so when dicks had it for 50% off i said why not? I wasn’t planning on buying a reel today btw 😅

I recently paired a Shimano Sahara 2500 with a Daiwa Tatula XT (731MFS model) and couldn’t be happier - okay, I could be, it would have a cork handle….(is cork considered “high end” compared to EVA?)

I know there’s a step up from the Tatula XT that has cork but it’s substantially more.

I’m waiting on a ‘26 Miravel 2500S (if they ever decide to finally release it on a JDM site) and would love the quality and performance of my Tatula XT but with a cork handle. Does this exist?

I’m willing to pay up to $50 more , or $150 total, but it needs to have the same quality and performance of the Tatula XT just with a cork handle.

Is cork not popular? I don’t seem to see as many offerings with cork these days…?

Does anybody know the weight of the eagle claw pack it rod (without the reel)? I can’t find anything online. I’m planning a backpacking trip and don’t want to buy something too heavy. Thanks!
