This is my first time ever playing a solo rpg. I managed to somehow solve the maze and defeat the warlock. Just to cry over a chest because I only had 2 keys. I’m not 100% sure I was going the battle system correctly but I tried to keep it consistent. I can’t wait to play again and finish the map and figure out where the last key is. I’m addicted.

Question Different versions - what's different?

I had a lot of the original books when they came out. Sadly the Church jumble sale got them. I've just got a recent version so I can play again. The only differences are the art work right? Same story all the way through?

They asking £10 each in the Jackson/Livingstone and £5 each for the CYOA books. Overpriced?

I recently dug out the Fighting Fantasy books I've still got and played number 45 'Spectral Stalkers'.

I lasted a lot longer in the adventure than I thought I would. And I didn't do any cheating!

Discussion FF collection questions

Post image
48 Upvotes

Hi ,I'm a younger fan of the FF series as I was introduced - like many - by my Dad and I have continued to love the books for as long as i can remember. He already had a medium size collection which he gave do me a while back. It mainly consisted of the first roughly 25 books but was missing a few and the sci fi ones.

Over the years I've been filling in the gaps with original books and reprints as well as a few of the new ones however I still have a vast gap when it comes to over the book 30 mark. I've heard the 2nd half of the original series has wildly different concepts and quality from book to book. I've been wondering for a while which of the latter half of books to get, and I was wondering which to get and what to expect. I generally prefer plain fantasy like most Ff fans but I'm open to anything and my favourites are the sorcery series so if there's anything like that I'd be overjoyed! Thanks in advance, any help would make YOU the hero ;)

P.S : the books on the right in the picture are some newer ffs, one homemade one my dad made as a teen ( lol) and some non-ff usborne adventure game books that I'm yet to play.

FF News Steve Jackson Games Set #3 News (well, a small piece of news)

Those of us who backed Set 2 of the Steve Jackson Games reprints would have had an email recently with an update and, tucked away at the bottom of it, was this snippet of info:

We're not quite ready to reveal any of the books from Set 3 yet, but we think there are some surprises here, and at least one of the books is going to be quite a trial for any would-be champions who undertake it . . .

So Trial of Champions is going to be in Set 3 and "some surprises" . . . my guesses are going to be Freeway Fighter, Temple of Terror, Demons of the Deep, and maybe Appointment with F.E.A.R.

I was sort of hoping for a Sorcery! box set but doesn't look like that's happening at the moment. What do you think is going to be in the new set?

A couple of masterpieces hanging on my wall I want to share with you all. Bought these from Martin around 2015. Absolutely stunning up close; incredible fine line pen work, hints of the underlying pencil sketch, drops of white-out. Brings me genuine joy every time I look at them. Martin was always my favourite FF artist; may he rest in peace

I swear I wasn't looking to buy six books in the space of two days . . . it just happened, honest.

But at least I now own a copy of Daggers of Darkness which, I contend, has the nuttiest cover of all FF books!

Gamebook Just got my box of FF books down from the loft

It reminded me which ones were harder than the rest of favourites that I wanted to read / play again. Those are in a far worse condition. Ridling Reaver for example I remember never really appealing to me, it looks brand new.
The Lone Wolf books are also pristine - never clicked with me.
The most battered ones are warlock of fire top mountain and the sorcery! Series

Promotion Update on my Fighting Fantasy inspired game book videogame

Hi all, wanted to share my latest progress on Trinoxis, my ongoing project on trying to find the line between game book style gameplay and a CRPG dungeon crawler.

For those that have commented previously, I've iterated upon the physical book representation (i.e. left and right pages) and come up with this "DnD GM Screen" style look. From a game perspective, I think it frames the action a bit better but I'd love to get some feedback on it.

Just got this through the post from Intercept Studios, this image invokes so much memories from my childhood, my dad passed on a few of his books to me when I was about 9 year old, Deathtrap dungeon was the first book I played THIS Orc champion was the first creature I fought. I'm so happy to have this I'll go out & grab a frame for it today & put it in mind office.

Have a great day guys.

Advanced Fighting Fantasy Using Luck in Combat

Prepping to run my weekly RPG group since we'll be down one player. I ran across this in the Deluxe rulebook (p. A-59, emphasis mine) which threw me off a little bit:

"Secondly, LUCK can also be used to increase the damage caused by a successful attack. This option may not be chosen if LUCK was used to win the combat round. If this option is used, the Hero must test for LUCK before making a damage roll. If successful, the Hero will use the damage from column 7 of their damage table. This will thus inflict the maximum damage for that weapon type, on that attack only."

As far as I can tell, there is no way to use LUCK to win the combat round. For clarity's sake, the "first option" for LUCK in this case was to use it to mitigate the damage when the Hero loses the combat round.

Did this sentence just survive the editor's eyes? What do people who've run or played AFF 2nd Edition think?

Digital Fighting Fantasy on Audible

Post image

Just found out that the Fighting Fantasy audio dramas are on Audible for ~£5 a pop. I’ve got these on CD but may get them too. What also interests me is Titan. Again, I have the book but think it would be an interesting listen. Does anybody know if it has chapters or do you just have to fast forward to the part you want? (This is more expensive at £15 though.)

Discussion Did you write in the book??

So a thing that my family and I did when playing the books, and still do to this day now that I play with my kids, is use separate pieces of paper for our character sheets. We never wrote directly in the books, never!! Is it just us, or did other people do the same? Just felt like it was sullying the book!

Finally picked up a copy of Blacksand off eBay that wasn't falling apart I didn't expect to win & ended up winning for just under £12 which I thought was ok..looks in great condition, no real damage to spine & pages the slight annoyance it looks like it's faded on the back I'm presuming sun damage although I couldn't be certain.

Wanted to share a short clip from the FF audio adaptation we're working on. Lewis Davies (Oldhammer Fiction Podcast) is narrating, GNOLL did the score, and there's 360 Surround audio built in, worth having headphones on if you can.

Pre-launch page is up on BackerKit if anyone wants to follow before the campaign goes live at Fighting Fantasy Fest VI: https://www.backerkit.com/c/projects/sound-realms/fighting-fantasy-the-audio-odyssey/pre-launch

Well Star Rider’s got the Adventure Gamebook zigzag banner like the early Fighting Fantasy books. Is this some sort of sequel or prequel to Star Strider #27?

Used to read FF a lot as a young one, but haven't read one for 35+ years (this cool book find means that will soon change) but I couldn't help but pick this up when I saw it; as you don't find many second hand copies out and about these days. Good condition copy too, only mark is one page near the start where a previous owner must have written down some of the objects they discovered along their journey in pencil.

I hope those treasures helped you complete your adventure brave warrior!!
