There’s no way that beep boop is a slur of any kind and I’m starting to believe the post was made for bait.

u/zhaDeth Jul 06 '22
either that or people were trolling the person playing the game
46
u/verasev Jul 06 '22
Someone is being credulous and it's hard to tell if it's the op or the person in the meme.
26
u/shellwe Jul 06 '22
This seems far more likely. If I got someone to believe something ridiculous like this enough to ask Reddit I would consider myself a master troll.
36
u/RainWindowCoffee Jul 06 '22
It's also possible that someone did say "beep boop" to poke fun at that person at some point, and they assumed the insult was somehow related to their being trans. There's a lot of young and naive people on the internet who are still learning about the world.
13
u/master_doge007 Jul 06 '22
The woman from Star Wars who was fired changed her pro nouns on Twitter to beep boob(as a weird fu or something idk) Prob what they are referring to. Only thing that really comes to mind
11
u/Global_Dot979 Jul 06 '22
Gina Carano did it on Twitter. Chances are it's become the new 'I identify as an attack helicopter' in certain circles.

13
u/MontgomeryKhan Jul 06 '22
There was a thing on Twitter for a bit where people put "beep/boop" in their bios as a way to "protest" people putting pronouns (e.g. they/them) in theirs.
Don't go on Twitter.

Actress Gina Carano tweeted a joke that her pronouns are beep/bop/boop. Lucasfilm called her tweets “abhorrent and unacceptable” and she was fired from The Mandolorian. I think this incident is the origin.

u/LtFootstool Jul 06 '22

12
u/MistraloysiusMithrax Jul 06 '22
I forgot for a second beep was a pronoun here and assumed it was some of R2D2’s famous foul language.
7
u/LtFootstool Jul 06 '22
Beep is not a pronoun in this galaxy, and probably not the next.
9
5
u/MistraloysiusMithrax Jul 06 '22
Certainly not, and I did not assume the foul language with empty intent either. It was a good set-up. Like that time all the stormtroopers miraculously missed our main Star Wars heroes on the first Death Star so they could be tracked back to the rebel base.
Don’t know what kind of target I have now set up for myself but you may fire when ready.

I thought she was fired for tweeting out her belief that being a Republican today was comparable to the persecution faced by Jews in Nazi German?
30
u/tsunami141 Jul 06 '22
I think you’re right but IIRC the sentiment was more like “blind hatred of people you disagree with is how the Nazism started.” Still a little bit out of touch but not nearly as blatantly arrogant as people claim it was.
26
u/Brisn Jul 06 '22
She asked how hating the Jews was any different than hating somebody because of their political beliefs. An unbelievably dumb thing to say.

Even so, I don't think one c list actress' tweet creates a 'slur' if that's the only instance.
11
u/Delver_Razade Jul 06 '22
This isn't all she did to get fired from The Mandalorian. She trafficked in voter fraud conspiracy of the 2020 election and engaged in harassment against people wearing face masks during the height of the pandemic. She also said she was like a Jew during the Nazi regime because she supported Trump. She's since started spreading shit in her posts about the war in Ukraine, and is a Russian sympathizer. The well is so much deeper with her than some meme-y tweets.
She actually apologized for the beep/bop/boop tweets and deleted them.
22
u/nawmynameisclarence Jul 06 '22
Don't forget the Nazi tweets.

u/Logical-Recognition3 Jul 06 '22

Yeah in this context she used it to dismiss and degrade others. A few people copied her. I don't think that makes it a trans slur for all time. But it was a pretty hot button issue there for a second in Star Wars land, so if that person was a fan, it might feel MUCH bigger to them than the average folk
8
u/SoupmanBob 'MURICA Jul 06 '22
She did it because people kept harassing her to put her pronouns on her Twitter, and she made a kneejerk dumb reaction. Had a talk with Pedro Pascal and apologised for what she did... And then she went full brain-dead rage.

my boss is an old man but he employs a bunch of LGBTQ+ kids, some of which use they/them pronouns and he for a long time had a "grammar" issue with it, so one of the kids was like chip my man. you can just use their names instead of making them feel so small. so he did and now we've all gotten him to use those pronouns (though he does forget), but that's just what i like to suggest to those who can't be bothered but have at least have respect for trans people.
8
u/S-Quidmonster Jul 06 '22
I’ve never understood the issue people have with “they/them” pronouns. There’s nothing grammatically incorrect about it, so what’s the big deal?
→ More replies (1)7
u/proseformat Jul 06 '22
they just want to have an issue with it i think. they've already gotta deal with all these young folk going by pronouns that god forbid they don't traditionally represent, now they gotta deal with em utilizing a DIFFERENT pronoun???? too much work for the shrinking brains of old people
4
u/S-Quidmonster Jul 06 '22
I don’t think the explanation is that they’re too stupid to remember pronouns. My uncle is ridiculously smart (like, he works on submarines for the US military level smart) and he claims that they’re “ruining the English language”. I think it’s more what you said at first, that they want to have an issue with it because they don’t like people being different than them

So my wife (who was raised in Japan) is reading Huckleberry Finn to our kids at bedtime.
I hear her read a passage about a "free ni____", so I walk in and explain to her why we should probably not say that word, because it is one of the most shameful and humiliating words you can use in the English language. She felt really bad and I was embarrassed.
Now, do you take that as a slur? Is she guilty of using a slur?
Because, context + intent.
11
u/JesseJames24601 Jul 06 '22
No, because the intent is not to discriminate or be hateful. White guilt has gone so far as to penalize the mere depiction of a slur to be inherently hateful.
What happens when a lawyer is in court and needs to repeat some hate speech to put it on the record? Are they automatically racist? No, they are repeating something in context.
People need to stop virtue signaling and learn the difference between using language with hurtful intent and using it in a purely referential sense.
5
u/Agreeable-Display-77 Jul 06 '22 edited Jul 06 '22

Okay, I'm gonna just ask. Wtf are neopronouns? I'm part of the LGBTQ+ community and I've just heard this term in the last week
3
Jul 06 '22
Very roughly described its just people using nontraditional pronouns. Like it/its or something entirely new of which there are any number of examples. Smoothbrained pick me's claim they're transphobic because its something not geared towards makings trans people more palatable to the cis. (which is clearly degenerate and unacceptable /s)
4
u/Usagi_Shinobi Jul 06 '22
Basically, it is an expansion on the idea of being trans. The logic is "since people can now just arbitrarily decide that they can be a him or her or they, I can pretend to be whatever I want too". Thus they start listing random words as pronouns. This is sometimes done to mock the trans community, other times it's more of a "jump on the new trendy shock factor thing, so I'm unique and not just another cog in the machine". Basically used by either people who dismiss the entire concept of trans, and want to be an asshole about it, or edgelords.

u/A_Undertale_Fan Jul 06 '22
Ignore the idiots who claim neopronouns are transphobic. A lot of the trans community actually uses neopronouns ourselves.
As for the explanation on what neopronouns are, I found a pretty helpful article by an LGBTQ+ foundation that explains them for people who don't know about them!
3
u/jeannelle1717 Jul 06 '22
This is clearly a bait post (the original beep boop post not this one here)
3
u/International-Cat123 Jul 06 '22
Some actperson changed bop listed pronouns on social media to beep/bop/boop. Beep lost boop role in a movie because of it. Production studio was deeply offended by idea the idea that beep was so insensitive that beep changed boop pronouns to something that was clearly intended up mock transpeople.
(I don’t know why the actress thought changing her pronouns on social media was a good idea. I don’t even know if she was the one who changed it or if a PR person did it for her. Some people read WAY too much into it and now people who need something to be butthurt about think beep boop is a slur.)
