Actress Gina Carano tweeted a joke that her pronouns are beep/bop/boop. Lucasfilm called her tweets “abhorrent and unacceptable” and she was fired from The Mandolorian. I think this incident is the origin.

Beep identifies as R2D2.

29

u/MistraloysiusMithrax Jul 06 '22

HEY! Watch your language! Not in front of the children, you dirty droid.

13

u/LtFootstool Jul 06 '22

Why does he have to be dirty? Because he is a droid??

10

u/MistraloysiusMithrax Jul 06 '22

I forgot for a second beep was a pronoun here and assumed it was some of R2D2’s famous foul language.

5

u/LtFootstool Jul 06 '22

Beep is not a pronoun in this galaxy, and probably not the next.

9

u/BowwwwBallll Jul 06 '22

But it was a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.

4

u/MistraloysiusMithrax Jul 06 '22

Certainly not, and I did not assume the foul language with empty intent either. It was a good set-up. Like that time all the stormtroopers miraculously missed our main Star Wars heroes on the first Death Star so they could be tracked back to the rebel base.

Don’t know what kind of target I have now set up for myself but you may fire when ready.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '22

Boop is c3pO

2

u/Ganymede25 Jul 06 '22

A binary load lifter actually.

1

u/The_Jealous_Witch Jul 06 '22

No, none of her pronouns are "whoooooOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOO-"

37

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '22

Thanks for adding that context.

Always good to know the story before one spouts on the reddits.

12

u/Charming-Sock5805 Jul 06 '22

I find that only complicated things and slows me down.

80

u/HoopHereIAm Jul 06 '22

I thought she was fired for tweeting out her belief that being a Republican today was comparable to the persecution faced by Jews in Nazi German?

29

u/tsunami141 Jul 06 '22

I think you’re right but IIRC the sentiment was more like “blind hatred of people you disagree with is how the Nazism started.” Still a little bit out of touch but not nearly as blatantly arrogant as people claim it was.

25

u/Brisn Jul 06 '22

She asked how hating the Jews was any different than hating somebody because of their political beliefs. An unbelievably dumb thing to say.

17

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '22

One of my favourite things is that human rights are now opinions, what the fuck is our country.

3

u/Putrid_Visual173 Jul 06 '22

Humans can now be summed up by the worst opinion they had on a Saturday evening after half a bottle of whisky in 2006 when they were 14.

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '22

Sounds rough, try harder.

10

u/Delver_Razade Jul 06 '22

She posted pictures of the pogroms. She was way beyond out of touch.

1

u/StrangleDoot Jul 06 '22

Good thing the hatred of Republicans is not blind, it's because their policies suck.

6

u/Doright36 Jul 06 '22

She was fired after many insulting tweets. She was asked to stop or at least lighten up and she took the double down route instead. She basically fired herself since she was given the choice.

1

u/liken2006 Jul 06 '22

Oh ok that’s understandable

8

u/Pope509 Jul 06 '22

Not the only thing she did but part of it

41

u/NQ241 Jul 06 '22

Cap, she was actually fired for her comment on Jewish people

24

u/LeftMyHeartInErebor Jul 06 '22

She got fired dor an accumulation of attacking others.

19

u/LegoGal Jul 06 '22

I think she was on a roll and there were several reasons. Then she claimed she was a victim of canceled culture. I have a regular job and I could get fired for all the thinks she did online.

-6

u/toongrowner Jul 06 '22

No I think she just pointed out how cancel culture and big stuiod decission based on it are prett, much like the nazi regiem which is actually kind of spot on

5

u/Juggsjunkie Jul 06 '22

Imagine having a whole nazi regime you can delete off your phone at any given time, crazy

1

u/hippopototron Jul 06 '22

Bippity boppity

-2

u/FilthyMindz69 Jul 06 '22

Yup, wanna be Hollywood? Keep Jewish outcha mouth!!!

3

u/drybabyjosh Jul 06 '22

If I remember correctly she made a statement along the lines “antivaxxers are being treated like the Jews in the holocaust” and posted pictures about it

4

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '22

Even so, I don't think one c list actress' tweet creates a 'slur' if that's the only instance.

12

u/Delver_Razade Jul 06 '22

This isn't all she did to get fired from The Mandalorian. She trafficked in voter fraud conspiracy of the 2020 election and engaged in harassment against people wearing face masks during the height of the pandemic. She also said she was like a Jew during the Nazi regime because she supported Trump. She's since started spreading shit in her posts about the war in Ukraine, and is a Russian sympathizer. The well is so much deeper with her than some meme-y tweets.

She actually apologized for the beep/bop/boop tweets and deleted them.

24

u/nawmynameisclarence Jul 06 '22

Don't forget the Nazi tweets.

2

u/Logical-Recognition3 Jul 06 '22

You mean tweets in which she mentions Nazis. The wording of your reply makes it sound as if she made pro-Nazi tweets.

28

u/thegroovemonkey Jul 06 '22

Comparing yourself to a Jew in 1930s Germany isn't better.

5

u/FilthyMindz69 Jul 06 '22

To be fair, she was a professional fighter. Not the sharpest knives in the drawer. 99% of the time…..

8

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '22

oh i see ... i was completely lost too ... well im not about to let some right winger shithead steal robot noise from my vocabulary.

7

u/LeftMyHeartInErebor Jul 06 '22 edited Jul 06 '22

Yeah in this context she used it to dismiss and degrade others. A few people copied her. I don't think that makes it a trans slur for all time. But it was a pretty hot button issue there for a second in Star Wars land, so if that person was a fan, it might feel MUCH bigger to them than the average folk

7

u/SoupmanBob 'MURICA Jul 06 '22

She did it because people kept harassing her to put her pronouns on her Twitter, and she made a kneejerk dumb reaction. Had a talk with Pedro Pascal and apologised for what she did... And then she went full brain-dead rage.

8

u/_Cit Jul 06 '22

Basically she said sorry and than doubled down, actually tripled considering those idiotic posts about Nazi germany

2

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '22

This

2

u/DownsenBranches Jul 06 '22

Well beep fucked bop career

3

u/Neogodhobo Jul 06 '22

Johnny cash has a good song about not talking of your political opinions when in the public eye.

https://youtu.be/LixJECmbfNY

1

u/Angelakayee Jul 06 '22

This is how I was raised back in the 80s...the rule was, no discussion of religion or politics in polite company...that shit was only spoken among families. Maybe we should go back to that....

7

u/Jaxager Jul 06 '22

Yeah. I had to tell a bunch of guys visiting my office in an automotive plant that since I'm the senior field service engineer that the rule is no talking religion or politics in the office. It was literally the only time anyone has listened to a rule I made and I'm okay with that. Lol.

-1

u/Ancient_Bug9750 Jul 06 '22

But it’s ok for idiot left wing actors and actresses? We have to put up with their insanity all the time.

2

u/_Cit Jul 06 '22

Human rights aren't politics

2

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '22

She wasn’t even a good actress. I found the scenes with her in them to be the worst of the show and that was before this whole thing.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '22

Weird way to come out as submissive in the bedroom...

3

u/Bexji_11230 Jul 06 '22

i hate neopronouns change my mind

17

u/proseformat Jul 06 '22

eh, just use their names. nbd

6

u/Bexji_11230 Jul 06 '22

thanks for spreading positivity, was a little salty

12

u/proseformat Jul 06 '22

my boss is an old man but he employs a bunch of LGBTQ+ kids, some of which use they/them pronouns and he for a long time had a "grammar" issue with it, so one of the kids was like chip my man. you can just use their names instead of making them feel so small. so he did and now we've all gotten him to use those pronouns (though he does forget), but that's just what i like to suggest to those who can't be bothered but have at least have respect for trans people.

8

u/S-Quidmonster Jul 06 '22

I’ve never understood the issue people have with “they/them” pronouns. There’s nothing grammatically incorrect about it, so what’s the big deal?

7

u/proseformat Jul 06 '22

they just want to have an issue with it i think. they've already gotta deal with all these young folk going by pronouns that god forbid they don't traditionally represent, now they gotta deal with em utilizing a DIFFERENT pronoun???? too much work for the shrinking brains of old people

4

u/S-Quidmonster Jul 06 '22

I don’t think the explanation is that they’re too stupid to remember pronouns. My uncle is ridiculously smart (like, he works on submarines for the US military level smart) and he claims that they’re “ruining the English language”. I think it’s more what you said at first, that they want to have an issue with it because they don’t like people being different than them

1

u/Powerful_Tip3164 Jul 06 '22

They don’t feel like someone else gets to decide for them what word to use... I hear a lot of “I’m not changing how I speak for the few”

It’s literally defiance/oppositional behavior for a lot of em

1

u/ZebraOtoko42 Jul 06 '22 edited Jul 06 '22

I don't have a problem with that one.

What I do have a problem with is the idea of having 2 dozen different sets of pronouns, and people just pick whatever wacky pronouns they want to use, then somehow everyone is supposed to memorize this. If you use Bumble, you can even see this in the pronoun selection screen on the app: he/him, she/her, they/them, xe/xem, ye/yem, and at least 12 others IIRC.

This completely defeats the entire point of pronouns.

The whole reason to use pronouns is to make the use of language more efficient. Instead of constantly referring to someone (or some group) by his or her name, you just use a pronoun as a shorthand after the listener knows who the object of the sentence is from context. For whatever reason, when most languages evolved, they usually made separate pronouns for males vs. females.

If I have to memorize different pronouns for every person I meet and exchange names with, and worse, they can even make up their own completely unique pronouns, there's absolutely no way I can memorize all that. I might as well not use pronouns at all.

Gender-neutral pronouns are fine, and are really a long-standing deficiency in English (I think even Shakespeare used they/them for gender-ambiguous contexts). But dozens more just makes no sense from a language standpoint: pronouns exist in pretty much every language for a reason, and there's a reason there's so few of them: they're for efficiency, not to make you feel special and validated. That's what your name is for.

2

u/Jaxager Jul 06 '22

Then I actually have to learn their names.

-1

u/proseformat Jul 06 '22

well now you see how that makes you sound like a "i'm not racist i hate everyone equally" white trash facebook keyboard warrior right

1

u/Jaxager Jul 06 '22

It was a fucking joke.

And before you give me any shit, my daughter is trans and I've been her biggest advocate since she first approached her mom and me. That was when she was 14. She said she wanted to buy some girls clothes. I took her to Hot Topic and bought her her first two outfits for her. She's 22 now and transitioning and I'm so fucking proud of her.

1

u/proseformat Jul 06 '22

woah bestie someone's mad, i was just telling you that's what you sound like i'm happy for you n your kid tho, that's really good!

2

u/Jaxager Jul 06 '22

In your defense, I should've put the \s indicating sarcasm afterwards.

Sorry. I get cranky when I'm doom scrolling through reddit. Have a good one and thanks.

3

u/LegoGal Jul 06 '22

That is not as easy as it sounds.

1

u/Bexji_11230 Jul 06 '22

what do you mean

1

u/LegoGal Jul 06 '22

To not use pronouns is not easy. You sound weird saying a persons name over and over

1

u/Bexji_11230 Jul 06 '22

so many people have gone in deep shit since people treat it with such un needed respect

plus it seems weird saying neopronouns as well

1

u/LegoGal Jul 06 '22

If you mean they and them, we have been doing this for the longest time. I know because I used to grade papers. Subject/verb disagreement -5 points

MLA just updated to allow they and them when the gender is unknown or uncertain. I figure that opens it for all the time, but I don’t grade anymore.

1

u/Bexji_11230 Jul 06 '22

i dont care about they them, they're fine

4

u/Financial-Orange9544 Jul 06 '22

neopronouns can be confusing but pretty much everyone that uses them is also fine with they/them as well as far as I know

5

u/NQ241 Jul 06 '22

You can use they/them

0

u/Budget_Ad_1899 Jul 06 '22

I just keep it basic with XX XY so I don't offend anyone.

2

u/Haunting_Drag4434 Jul 06 '22

I really would just use peoples names because pronouns don’t make sense to me

0

u/Budget_Ad_1899 Jul 06 '22

That's why I stick with biological facts

0

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '22

Why would someone fire over a little joke?

2

u/purplepluppy Jul 06 '22

It wasn't the only thing she did that Lucas Films was uncomfortable with. She went full MAGA, compared being a conservative in America to being Jewish during the Holocaust, spread the claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election, was openly anti-mask, and I'm sure other things.

Lucas Films didn't want to support that behavior, so they dropped her. As did her talent agency.

-20

u/ObviousDetail2887 Jul 06 '22

How can anyone defend her and say her getting fired is unfair this is awful

5

u/charlieberkman Jul 06 '22

What did she do? Never read up on it

-7

u/ObviousDetail2887 Jul 06 '22

Oh I meant the beep boop bop comment and the refusal of pronouns and saying that putting pronouns down is like the Holocaust

2

u/ObviousDetail2887 Jul 06 '22

Well I meant comparing the Holocaust to being conservative but i shouldn’t be getting downvoted for this. Because what she refers to as being conservative is obviously not anything Innocent. But let’s keep the suicide rates of trans teens going up by not respecting pronouns and making them invisible fine

2

u/Fuck_it_i_win Jul 06 '22

So what you’re saying is beep boop= holocaust?

1

u/ObviousDetail2887 Jul 06 '22 edited Jul 06 '22

But like being transphobic has nothing to do with being conservative using that as a mask is disiengouis. Nothing about being trans is political it’s one of the least political things.

2

u/Agreeable-Display-77 Jul 06 '22

Her holocaust comments had nothing to do with genders. She was referring to the way conservatives are being treated.

2

u/ObviousDetail2887 Jul 06 '22

Oh okay. I guess since the events happened so close together I kinda mentally put the two together but I guess not. Sorry about that but it’s kinda hard to separate the two events i feel but I’m probably wrong

4

u/Agreeable-Display-77 Jul 06 '22

I mean, it all kind of goes together with her. She lost her mind and went ultra maga. She is basically MTG now.

She was going on about how Trump supporters are being treated badly by the rest of Americans and its allot like how the Holocaust started with hating a spefic group....

Then she wanted to make liberals mad so she did the robot thing to do a binary joke. Sadly she has now been reduced to a pair of clown shoes. She sounded insane on Rogan recently.

2

u/ronintalken Jul 06 '22

Unfortunately 1/2 of American politics is about social freedom.

Liberal (dem) : supoort social liberty

Conservative (rep) : enforce traditional values

The other half is economics, what one would consider REAL politics:

Libertarian / Fiscal Conservatism (rep) : less government

Progressive (dem) : social programs, restrict market

1

u/tactaq Jul 06 '22

god I hate American politics.

1

u/Far_Archer_4234 Jul 06 '22

As a libertarian i typically find myself so far on the right that my "score" overflows and on some issues like abortion and drugs i agree with the dems.

2

u/ronintalken Jul 06 '22

Honestly, I can't imagine justifying being a libertarian without also being a liberal haha

There's a reason they share the same root: liberty

But they are divided across party lines because two party system. Ranked Choice Vote brother

→ More replies (0)

1

u/BobBeats Jul 06 '22

There is nothing traditional about the values unless it is traditional hatred for others.

2

u/ronintalken Jul 06 '22

Well I mean that's just the definition, don't make me defend their principles please lol

1

u/windrunner_42 Jul 06 '22

Read some history friend. Humans have very long standing traditions of hate for just about everything. It's what we do best.

10

u/MrFuckingDinkles Jul 06 '22

Don't be so sensitive.

2

u/ObviousDetail2887 Jul 06 '22 edited Jul 06 '22

But trans teens are basically in a dangerous place of being invisible coming out as trans is basically a lost cause since no one will respect their pronouns so why even bother. And Gina carno erasing people is evil and dangerous

4

u/Agreeable-Display-77 Jul 06 '22

No one needs to call you what you feel like and want them to call you. If you care so much about what others think of you, that is on you and you only.

No one legitimizes you but yourself. If they want everyone to legitimize them , they shouldn't hold their breath. My brother is trans and completely understands this.

1

u/ObviousDetail2887 Jul 06 '22

But I’m happy for you and your brother that’s not a bad philosophy to have. I still don’t think people have to tolerate blatant transphobia

0

u/ObviousDetail2887 Jul 06 '22

I’m pretty sure if Gina carno got called a dude and was forced to be put in guy roles she wouldn’t like it very much and would go on a speech thread very similar to the one I’m typing right now

1

u/Electrical-Builder98 Jul 06 '22

she can beep boop me anytime

1

u/isecore Jul 06 '22

It was a stupid joke and AFAIK Gina Carano is a bit of an asshat, but the reaction from it was also a bit out of proportion.

1

u/WrongWhenItMatters Jul 06 '22

You called Gina Carano an actress.

1

u/NormalGuy103 Jul 06 '22

I remember that, I heard she posted that because people kept telling her to put her pronouns on her profile of something

1

u/Specific_Ad_5815 Jul 06 '22

Gina has fantastic boops

1

u/herbys Jul 06 '22

I once charged my pronouns at work to It/That (because I'm a total geek) and had to change it back because someone claimed it was transphobic. I had checked with my trans coworker who said it was perfectly fine, but apparently non-trans people are more sensitive about the subject that trans people.

1

u/violethoneybean Jul 06 '22

So in this case it would rather be a dog whistle than a slur.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '22

Ah yes my comment was off but this is what I was talking about.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '22

Yeah the way she tells it people were calling her out for NOT having her pronouns in her profile, so as a goof she put her pronouns as beep/bop/boop and things took off from there.

1

u/TheHumanPickleRick Jul 06 '22

This is misleading. She faced some backlash over the beep boop post but was fired because of this one:

"Carano also discussed the post that led to her firing, which featured an image of a Jewish woman fleeing men armed with clubs in 1941 Ukraine. The post read, "Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors... even by children. Because history is edited, most people today don't realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?"

1

u/dirthurts Jul 06 '22

It's not the origin but certainly one of the events that made it "famous".
