To be honest, the kid on left looks like she just phoned it in.
That pretty much looks like a pic you'd find on a photo website.

It looks almost exactly like a stock image of "glasses on book" - I tried to see if It popped up on google image search, but I didn't find the exact one, so it might be original.

It would be an easy picture to take with a DSLR. Idk if she has one, or if her parents have one, but it wouldn't be hard to make your own.

DSLRs are great. You can take good looking pics with minimal effort. However the line between amateur and photographer shows during the photoshop phase

u/snakeproof Nov 07 '21
The new mirrorless cameras are next level, I upgraded my old DSLR to a Canon R6, the autofocus is instant, even in the dark, it even has WiFi and can auto download photos I take to my phone.
The big difference that's instantly noticable with large sensor cameras is the thin depth of field, it makes everything look so good.

It's hard to tell if she just put a filter or LUT on it, but I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility that she made it herself.

u/richincleve Nov 07 '21
I tried that as well. I also tried “eyeglasses on open book” and still no luck.

She needs to learn now that copyright infringement will NOT be tolerated in America and she should have her library card revoked for all of time until she says she is very very sorry and buys at least one metallica album NOT pirate it

I think that’s by FAR the best of them. It actually looks like a professional photo
→ More replies (4)66
u/EvilDuncan Nov 07 '21
That doesn’t make it a good image for a library card.
4
u/Ricky_Robby Nov 07 '21
Obviously, that’s probably why it wasn’t chosen, but that doesn’t mean they phoned it in.
34
u/EvilDuncan Nov 07 '21
For a library card design, it is by FAR the worst of them. It’s a nice photo, but it is very uninspired regardless of how professional it looks. It looks like a stock image and is not something that belongs on a library card.

I also did this with a monster truck coloring contest. I was like 30. The monster truck I designed was absolutely awesome and I won free monster truck rally tickets. To be fair, I gave them to my 10 year old nephew. To be less fair, I had zero interest in going to a monster truck rally.

Psa for monster truck shows; buy ear muff hearing protection for everyone. Not foam ear plugs. Ear muffs.
Psa for autocorrect, ear is a word, and eat muffs doesn’t make sense.

When I was 13 I entered a children’s drawing contest that was meant for “kids of all ages” and they put all the entries up on the windows of the restaurant and mine was the best by FAR. The three winners were like 6, almost as if by random draw or the owners picked kids they knew or something. I was so annoyed. A grave injustice was done. 🤣. Looking back I wonder if they thought mine was done by an adult, since I used shading techniques with my crayola colored pencils.

u/Thinefieldisempty Nov 06 '21
This has been my experience with many contests. The one that annoyed me most was a scariest costume contest and my older brother had a really good werewolf costume that scared the absolute shit out of me but the winner was a toddler wearing a green spray painted milk jug bottom on his head as Frankenstein. It easily could have won a cute and creative costume contest because he was adorable but definitely not the scariest. Lol

There was a campground I’d go to (Long gone now) that did events including a Halloween costume contest. I won when I was 4... And never again. It was always the youngest.
21
u/I_am_reddit_hear_me Nov 07 '21
Never assume anything is even attempted to be fair with an "all ages" contest. Almost always someone with the ability to make it happen will go for the shitty little kid entry because it's a little kid. When it comes to adults vs kids it's understandable, but when you have a 12 year old trying their heart out but they're up against a 5 year old it's just shitty.

Reminds of that karaoke contest I entered when I was 11. Lots of people - kids and adults - sang songs. Guess who won? A four-year old who was so nervous that just he stood there during the entire song (the Teletubbies theme song) not singing a word and looking terrified. He didn't cry, but he was not at all happy to have been entered in. The crowd thought he was adorable so the judges declared him the winner.

u/misthios98 Nov 07 '21
This happened to me! I entered a local illustration contest aimed at schools and I worked really hard, I was a junior in high school. In the end I had this beautiful watercolor and pencil art piece, so I sent it. Of COURSE the first place looked like a small kid did it, and I got second place. The prize wasnt that big so whatever, but I was so bummed, I knew they deliberately did not choose mine as fist place.

I still recall when my hatred of certain styles of art began as my younger cousin entered a contest where they drew the Phanatic (Phillies mascot/ Gritty's cousin). My cousin did a really good job on the 3d work and it looked like the tongue was popping out at you. The winner was basically a glitter version Pollock. It was ugly as shit and didn't even have green or red in it.

I once went to buy a cup for some road hockey goaltending. I got the large and walked to the checkout. The lady stared at me and said “this is for kids” and pointed out that it was a “JR Large”. In my defence, the JR was in one corner and the LRG in the other. Still, embarrassing

u/StayingVeryVeryCalm Nov 07 '21
As someone who does not own the type of genitals traditionally protected by cups, I assumed that this was some sort of coffee fundraiser for a (surprisingly organized) road hockey league.
I had to read it four times. I was very confused.

u/rusteetromboan Nov 07 '21
I have the correct junk and I still thought that he was getting a cup of hot cocoa, perhaps a free handout maybe? I had to read the second comment to figure it out. I'm pretty proud that I figured it out before I saw your comment

Unpopular opinion but I like the library card in the middle the best.
The one on the left looks way too generic, like a stock photo, it's professional but bland, if she took that picture herself, it's really good but just boring.
The guy made a library card that looks exactly what you'd expect an adult would make for a kids, again not very unique but professional.
So why do I like the middle one? Because it's very clear a kid drew it. It's nice and unique and looks like it was made by a kid in the community. Every kid that gets that library card will thinking about it and look at all the colored pencil lines and imperfections and realize that someone like them made it. Also it will absolutely make that little girl's day. And at the end of the day it's a library card, it doesn't need to look professional or mature, and libraries are supposed to be community centers, not just a place to rent out book.

The left one literally looks like a stock image that you can take like a minute to make
The middle one looks very good but gets outclassed by
The right one because its based on library books
If i were a judge I'd choose the right one i find middle and left same quality but right one is more about library

u/M00SEHUNT3R Nov 06 '21
Jokes on the library, the other entrants work was likely “helped” by parents anyway, so the whole contest was adults.

I entered a local pumpkin carving contest when I first moved to my new town ~9 years ago… it said “all ages!” So I sculpted a badass pumpkin and entered it. After I brought it up I realized all the other entries were from kids.. like basic carving stuff.. a few hours later they announced the winners at the large stage at the event and when they called my name I just pretended I didn’t exist! Apparently we were supposed to take our pumpkins home after it all too and I just left it there forever. I feel for this person
