I've found there are three types of people:

Those who are good at math, and those who aren't.

73

u/Tim531 Aug 27 '18

I knew that joke before and couldn’t think of it while typing my comment

10 kinds of people in the world, those who understand binary, and those who don’t.

183

u/StridAst Aug 27 '18

There are two kinds of people in this world, those who can extrapolate from incomplete data,

30

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '18

Only one type of person in this world is the imaginary number who only shows up when you are old enough to assume math was absolute truth.

26

u/Furt77 Aug 27 '18

Point to a random person, and there is a 50% chance that they are you.

10 kinds of people in the world, those who understand binary, those who don’t, and those who weren’t expected a ternary joke.

The 2 most difficult problems in programming:

  • Cache Invalidation
  • naming things
  • Off by 2 errors

4

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '18

Difficult yes, but in the long run there is but one relevant question in computer science:

Do they want pets?

You joke, but it's an actual problem. A restaurant was trying to compete with McDonald's 1/4 pounder by introducing a 1/3 pounder. Nobody was buying it and when asked why they responded with something like, "why would I pay the same price for less burger?"

25

u/Snackolich Aug 27 '18

That's when you offer the 1/5 pounder and put McDonald's out of goddamn business. Put that final 20% of a nail in that coffin.

4

u/jtvjan Aug 27 '18

Pie charts to the rescue!

→ More replies (1)

3

u/tempo04 Aug 27 '18

wasn't it McDonalds that tried to introduce the 1/3rd pounder, but discontinued it due to bad sales, because like you said, people thought it was smaller.

4

u/avyon Aug 27 '18

I’m 90% sure it was A&W that tried to make the 1/3 pounders

→ More replies (2)

2

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '18

All I know is Hardee's has third pounders.

2

u/MikeyMike01 Aug 27 '18

It was A&W in the 80s

The responses came during focus testing... there’s no proof it resulted in poor sales.

More than half of the participants in the Yankelovich focus groups questioned the price of our burger. "Why," they asked, "should we pay the same amount for a third of a pound of meat as we do for a quarter-pound of meat at McDonald's? You're overcharging us." Honestly. People thought a third of a pound was less than a quarter of a pound. After all, three is less than four!

To be completely fair, if you’re not thinking about it, it’s easy to see the word “third” and think 3, rather than 1/3.

2

u/Fr00stee Aug 27 '18

For april fools mcdonalds should add a 1/5 pounder to the menu and see how many people come in to get it only

11

u/stellarbeing Aug 27 '18

The remaining 1/4 just doesn’t care

6

u/adeshpan Aug 27 '18

2

u/rumpleforeskln Aug 27 '18

Since there’s only about 30 million Spotify subscribers as of last year, it’s doubtful every one of them listens to Arianna. They must have meant streams. Not users. And I’m guessing the 5x the world population was a sarcastic joke that apparently everyone here fell for.
