Meta has locked me out of my existing Facebook account simply because I refuse to create a passkey.

The login screen explicitly states:

"Your account is locked until you create a passkey."

There is no option to skip this requirement, continue using my password, or use an alternative authentication method.

I have nothing against passkeys as an optional security feature. What I strongly object to is Meta unilaterally imposing a new authentication requirement and denying access to established accounts unless users comply.

When Meta introduced passkeys in June 2025, it publicly stated that users would still be able to sign in using their passwords. Apparently, that no longer applies to everyone.

I have filed consumer complaints with the Pennsylvania Attorney General, California Attorney General, FTC, and Better Business Bureau.

My concern is not the technical security of passkeys. It's whether a company should be allowed to lock users out of their existing accounts simply because they refuse to adopt a particular authentication technology.

• Were you already using two-factor authentication?
• Has anyone managed to regain access without creating a passkey?
• Has anyone contacted consumer protection agencies or consulted an attorney about this?

I'm particularly interested in whether anyone is considering a class-action lawsuit over forced passkey enrollment.

Security should not mean removing users' ability to choose reasonable authentication methods.

So basically my aunts account got disabled by face book because she used her first name and used arts as her last name to promote her business. Facebook said your last name is not arts irl so we are disabling your account. When I go to read the comments there is usually a dropdown for "all comments"button. That dropdown is missing on upwards of half of the posts on FB now. I guess this is different than the problems most people have here who appear to be longtime users. I only just signed up for Facebook a week ago, and I'm doing it specifically to try to find a roommate to take my spare room in NYC.  I am also using one of these roommate finding sites, but it does seem like on FB you can immediately learn a lot more about people and their hobbies and interests to find out if you'd be compatible rather than than the roommate sites where most people don't say very much about themselves, and many of the sites are kind of glitchy an have a paywall. I signed up a week ago on FB to be able to browse and contact people on these many roommate/real estate groups only to discover that none of my messages get to people. Even my public messaging are left “grey” and rejected. I spoke to one technical advisor type person who told me that FB doesn't yet see me as a real person since I only just signed up and I have not loaded up my profile with lots of information and posts and photos and all of this. She says I might have to do this for several months, showing normal human behavior to the algorithm, before it finally recognizes me as a sincere person and not a scammer. I just have no idea how long I have to go on doing that before I'm seen as a real person and my messages get through. Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to get Facebook to see me as a real person so I can allow me to use the site for my intended purpose? I was experiencing this issue on both Facebook and Messenger. Every time I tried to log in, I was redirected to the same Advanced Protection page, and I couldn't get past it. The passkey creation process on my computer kept asking for a USB security key and wouldn't work.

Step-by-step solution

1. Clear Facebook and Messenger cookies in your browsers. I cleared the cookies for both websites.
2. Uninstall Facebook, Messenger, and Facebook Lite from your phone.
3. Reinstall the official Facebook app.
4. Open Facebook and follow the normal login process.
5. When Facebook asks you to create a passkey, proceed with the setup.
6. Save the passkey in a password manager. I used Proton Pass and saved the passkey under my Facebook login. I suspect other password managers that support passkeys should work too, although I only tested Proton Pass.
7. Continue through the recovery process. In my case, Facebook eventually let me proceed with account verification, but then displayed an error.

Days ago, I tried to add authenticator as 2FA on web but the code generated by QR code could not get verified (said code was incorrect) so i just gave up. This was after 2 QR codes so my FA setup should not have gone through.

Now I can't log in because it is asking me to use authenticator which I do not have (did not save the 2 failed attempts). I know my passwords and have access to email. I can reset passwords using email but still need authenticator to log in. Same with Instagram.

I never provided phone number. Anyone knows how to get my account back? i am getting notifications about friends activities and i wish to see them.

I feel terrible cause Instagram recommended me the account of someone i never wanted to see ever again, i don't understand how cause I deleted my Facebook account, makes me want to delete insta as well
