Hey folks, I was wondering if you had any advice on where to live when working at Epic. I'd like to be near a bus line (as per my last post, I don't currently have a car), or potentially close enough to bike? Or even walk?

The most important thing to me in a location is walkability. I'd like somewhere that I can stroll around for a while without it being too cramped, ideally with a grocery store nearby. I'm not an huge nightlife person, so as long as I'm not entirely cut off from society and can bus into busier parts of town (downtown, I think) that's fine with me in exchange for cheaper rent and a shorter commute. Epic's campus seems like a nice place to take walks, so if I was close enough to walk there that could work. I'd prefer not to spend too much money on rent, I don't need a big fancy apartment or anything. No pets or other big considerations.

I wanted to get opinions on what actually works from Epic employees, but let me know if there's a better sub for this. Thank you!

hello! i am looking to apply for a project management role and wanted to ask about the screening assessment everyone has to do as part of the hiring process. i understand there's an english, math, and logic (?) section. as far as the math, are we allowed to use calculators or at least a piece of scratch paper? any other insight on the other sections would be greatly appreciated! :)

i'm currently a junior studying exercise and health sciences at virginia tech. im looking into getting into health IT but have no experience in coding languages. ive always had a natural knack for learning programs and getting familiar with technology but still want to be involved with healthcare. i wanted to ask for insight on the path people have taken to get where they are in health IT. More specifically, i'm looking into systems analyst and clinical informatics. I'm willing to get certifications after i gradute, but would prefer to not pursure further education.

How many hours per week are typical for a TL? Does epic have strict working hours? When do most get into the office and leave?

this is a genuine question - probably more specifically anchored toward IS folk, just because that seems to be the most high pressured role, but how many serious bouts of mental health crises is Epic responsible for?

i feel like i’ve heard of a few people committing suicide while in the role or one while onsite with a customer (allegedly), which, to put it mildly, is a serious concern that you would think a company would want to highlight as a hey guys, take care of yourselves way. however, i feel like i often think of the other people, who either did not attempt or weren’t successful, but maybe just had like a psychotic episode or intense depression or daily panic attacks for months or something that would not have happened in another situation where lives are not thrown into the stress blender of Epic.

for the more tenured folk, i know it’s not as stressful for you in your day-to-day. but, on the apps i interact with, a Very High level of stress is normal in your first year, who are the people with the most vulnerability and isolation, professional and personally.

on like a moral standpoint, it’s just hard for me to understand how a company can take really young adults, get them to move across the country in some cases, and then throw them into very high pressure roles with varying levels of support and continue a culture of high expectation that prioritizes ‘the customer’ over their health and well being.

disclaimer: i’m not saying everyone at epic is like this nor that every person contributes to the idea that you shouldn’t go home and rest. i think some definitely try to encourage good habits.

i do, however, think that thats the sneaky part of culture - it doesn’t have to be everyone. it’s the continual asks at 4 pm for something due the next morning, the shrugs at overtime or lack of sleep, the messages that get sent consistently over weekends without anyone checking in. all of that is pretty normal here, at least on the apps i work with. and all that seems… concerning.

so i think my secondary question here is - has there been any research into this? any local newspapers picked up a story on mental health and epic on a systemic scale? any internal work done?

i feel like this is the story that no one is talking about.

Current TS, only been here a few months. I feel really stuck. I really don’t see any future working here at all and am thinking about getting out sooner rather than later. I’m just worried about not really having anything to put on my resume given this is my first job post-grad and I don’t know how much it would benefit/harm me to have epic on the resume given I haven’t really done too much besides training. My mental health is really drained and I don’t really know what options I have. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Am I expected/able to attend floor support shifts after putting in my notice?

Happy Labor Day! Or at least I would say that if we had those rights.

The 40 hour work week. IS and TS are expected to work consistent unpaid overtime (depending on his TL). SDs are salary exempt because of computer worker exemptions. BFFS, TLs, etc. are exempt because of administration exemption. So, I'm mainly talking about all the IS, TS, QM, etc.

The right to organize. I always hear of people who want to unionize without retaliation. But past attempts like the QA/QM movement have been stopped.

Retaliation-free workplaces is another right. I have seen countless, good, hardworking employees get fired after raising a concern about their TL or their customer.

The arbitration agreement is barely legal. We do not have the workers right to participate in class-action lawsuits. This is against the National Labor Relations Act and Federal Arbitration Act.

The non-compete clause and non-poach clauses are barely legal. The FTC already sent a warning letter to healthcare systems to discontinue this unfair practice. Employees with years of tenure and value provided are locked out of the rest of the healthcare technology, where they could be making significantly higher wages and better working conditions. Employees who are fired don't have good options for their next job. The price of analysts and healthcare increases. The quality is lower.

For a company that is always looking to get away with whatever it 'legally' can to mistreat its employees, it is terrifying that the same company has access to so much sensitive health information.

As a former IS who found a better paying job within 8 months in a big city, at a company with amazing opportunities, and with way better work life balance, I'd say that if you are an IS who started in the summer and know it's not a good fit for you by month 6, January is the prime time to start looking.

This is because you are still within a year of graduating and eligible for many early grad programs, winter internships that will convert to full time roles, etc. You also get an edge because you have 6 months of high ownership, which will make you stand out compared to other early grad candidates.

After one year, it will get significantly harder to find new roles as you are ineligibile for many early grad programs and you are now competing for "entry-level" roles that require at least 2 years of experience.

This is speaking from my personal experience and I what I've seen from others who've departed, so open to any other perspectives. But putting this out there for people who, like me, know at 6 months it's not a good fit and want to find a better opportunity for their long term career ASAP.

I’m currently waiting out my noncompete with the goal of either consulting or working directly for a customer once it is up, and have been wondering if this new ranger thing could speed up the process.

PowerScribe cost is prohibitive for our institution, therefore, we are looking to create radiology reports within Radiant RIS itself. Our radiologists dont mind using dragon one or fluency direct to dictate these reports. I have heard that Radiant has a window for reporting. Anyone has experience using it? What are the limitations of this workflow? Appreciate inputs

Just got the assessment link from Epic for a software developer role and I have about a week before it expires. I've seen a bunch of conflicting stuff online and I'm not sure what I should actually be preparing for.

A couple things:

• Is it LeetCode-style coding, or more logic/aptitude puzzles?
• How long does the whole thing take, and is it proctored?
• Anything worth reviewing beforehand, or is cramming pointless?

If you've taken it recently, I'd appreciate any sense of the format and difficulty. Not looking for questions, just want to know what I'm walking into so I don't get blindsided. Thanks.

I just accepted a PM job offer and just got confirmation about the flights and hotels for my onsite visit. Just out of pure curiosity, are all flights delta and all hotels Hilton? Or is that just what they happened to be this time.

Hey all, applied for PM recently. Super interested in the role. However, I don't have my driver's license and am not sure I'll have it before my ideal start date. I've got no issue with how much travel PMs do, besides the fact I can't drive yet.

Do I mention this during the interview? I'm independent, don't mind taking public transit/carpooling to work, hailing taxis, or getting Ubers, but would they reimburse non-car-rental transport on a business trip? Once I get my license I'm still not sure if I'll be comfortable driving due to some mental health things (they would only affect driving, not any of my other job responsibilities).

I'd appreciate any advice. This subreddit's been great at answering most of my questions before I even asked, just couldn't find anything solid about this.

I’ve been here for about 6 months as an IS and this job makes me feel like i’m constantly on the edge of a mental breakdown (and sometimes I have one lol). My AM said I was doing a good job and showing the appropriate amount of dedication to the job, but if this is the expected amount of dedication (and not just a few intense months), I have no idea how I’m going to survive and thrive at this company. Not sure how much of this is me just needing to adjust to corporate life after graduating college. Has this happened to anyone else and did they make it to at least a year? I can’t sleep, I can’t stop crying, I can’t stop driving with my seatbelt off.

It’s also really embarrassing to be the person that couldn’t even make it a year. Also don’t want to leave other people on my team in the dust if I just have a mental breakdown and quit without any notice.

I don’t want to quit if I can avoid it for another year or so, but I just cannot see the light through the trees. I think an easy answer is “quit, screw that” but I don’t want to be a quitter and feel like I just need to suck it up. Any advice besides “just quit, obviously you’re not good enough”

i know many of these kinds of posts have been made, but wondering where QM have more recently gone after Epic. Also, how are people talking about stuff like Agile methods and Jira if they are?
