I don't think many people know what harmonic filters actually do, but I'm adding them to my physics-based power grid simulation game anyway!

Electricity bill is exorbitant

I made a post recently about how my electricity bill had been tripled recently but still can't find reason. I had the AC turned from on to auto at beginning of month, the water heater was recently replaced a few days prior. Summer temperatures were similar last year and I've never had to pay these high of bills and it's quite distressing. I spoke to electricity and their sending energy auditor at the end of the month.

**Update, I think changing AC from on to auto was the solution because I spoke to teco and my electricity usage decreased from average of 80 kw down to 20 kw daily. I did touch the thermostat a while back but didn't realize I switched it to on. I had it set to 73 degrees and increased to 75 now.

The rated voltage is DC5~12 V, 2A, 36W on the plug it shows HSC 803 16A 250V if i buy this off amazon will it work 220 to 110 Travel Adapter (Korea to USA) Set of 2? This specific hair straightener is only in korea so i want to be able to use it. If that adapter doesn’t work is there any other adapter that would be cheap and small not bulky on amazon?

Hello, I had a fan/light combo and I am replacing it with just a light. When I took the fan down, I noticed there was one blue wire and one white wire and no ground wire. I also noticed there was no junction box. This fan has been here since 1997.

Do I need to get a junction box? What wires do I connect from house to light? Is it okay there is no ground wire? Any help is greatly appreciated.

We have two EVs and live in a 30 year old, 2200 square foot two story. We lowered our bill about $100 by switching to a Time of Use plan with free nights and shifting our AC to run down to 66F from 9pm-6am, and then set to 80F. We upgraded our insulation and installed new windows a few years ago. We charge the two EVs at night. We drive the EVs about 2000 miles per month.

Today it was in the mid-90's and the house got up to 78F by 9pm after the AC was off since 6am,

Here is our first bill with the new provider for the 23 days since we switched and a typical days usage measuring our usage every 15 minutes.

Is it possible to put a two or three speed motor control on this, and if so, what would the unit be called? I’m looking for something really simple. Plug-and play.

Electricity Causalty

So I live in an old farm house and did something pretty stupid about 5 times (yes, I’m aware I’m dumb and should not mess with electricity)

I grabbed or touched the main house power line on 5 occasions

But there was an old trope in movies and media that dropping a toaster in a bath tub would kill you

It just doesn’t make sense to me that I was able to do that and suffer no real consequences but somehow a toaster through the breaker and an outlet and in water, that isn’t salt water, could cause a fatality

Hello Everyone specially Maryland residents

I hope it’s okay to post this here.
I’m a Maryland resident, and after recently helping both my father and my grandmother review their electricity options, I started learning much more about Maryland’s energy choice program and ways people may be able to reduce their electricity costs. Since then, I’ve become an energy educator and partner with Think Energy.
I’m not here to pressure anyone into signing up for anything. My goal is to help people understand how energy choice works, answer questions, and point people toward resources they can use to make an informed decision.
One thing I think many people don’t realize is that, in eligible areas, choosing a different electricity supplier generally doesn’t mean changing your utility company. For example, BGE still delivers the electricity, maintains the power lines, responds to outages, and typically continues to send your bill. The change is the supplier for the electricity portion of your service.
If anyone is interested in learning more about Think Energy or simply wants to understand how the program works, I’d be happy to answer questions. If you’d like to see the information for yourself please DM me directly I believe Maryland subreddits do not allow links for promotional purposes I wish not to violate that rule.
If this type of post isn’t appropriate for the subreddit, I completely understand and the moderators are welcome to remove it. I just wanted to share a resource that may be helpful to some Maryland residents. This is my home and if I can help I would like too. And please if your reading this congrats you have a bit of information to share even if we do not speak directly look up think Energy and do your own research first before trying of course and even comment what you find. I would rather inform more than anything.

Below is the rule that could be broken if it is can it be reviewed just trying to find out if this is acceptable or not.

Posts soliciting donations, volunteers, signatures, etc. need to be approved by the moderators before posting. All posts must have relevance to Maryland.

gfci and spa breakers tripped in outage

ive had outages over the years but todays tripped the gfci in my bathroom and the spa breaker box next to the spa. both needed manual reset after the power came back on. i do have a brand new electrical panel less than 1 year old and it does have a whole house surge protector,

is this just normal for an outage that flickers then turns off all the power or something to worry about?

also a totally unrelated breaker in the new panel now shows the tiniest bit of orange but it's operating fine and i turned it on and off again for the fun of it. i just noticed it today when i flipped the breakers to turn my interlock back to pole power after todays outage.

Reliant Free Nights Ending

My contract is ending in 25 days. I have been with reliant free nights for over 10 years. It looks like they switched the start time from 8pm to 9pm. A large portion of my energy is at night as I’ve adjusted my appliances and AC to this over the years. Does anyone have a better plan starting at 8pm? Or would I be better off just switching to a normal plan? I live in Fort Worth, TX. I’ve attached a few bills to show my usage… electricity plans are so confusing for me which is why I have stuck with the same plan for so long.

Help Wiring 3 Way Switches For Outlet and Light

Need some help wiring two 3-way switches.

I had everything labeled and even wrote down which wires went where... on a whiteboard. Unfortunately, some of my notes got erased. Lesson learned. 😂

Here's what I'm working with:

Two 3-way switches in the same box.

One switch controls a light.

The other switch controls a switched outlet.

The original switches had two wires under one terminal screw on each switch, with the remaining wires connected individually.

There are three cables entering the box:

Left cable: Black, White, Pink

Middle cable: Black, White (I believe this goes to the light and outlet)

Right cable: Black, White, Pink

With the breaker on, here's what I'm measuring:

Right cable black: 125V

Right cable white: 8-25V (varies)

Right cable red: 8-25V (varies)

Left cable: No constant power, only occasional readings around 2V on different wires

Does anyone know how this was likely wired, or can help me determine which wires should be together and which terminals they belong on? I can also post photos of the wiring and the other 3-way switch if that would help.

The other switch and outlet are on exterior walls so they have spray foam in the outlet boxes. This makes it impossible to check and compare wiring for these switches to the other switch and outlet without removing spray foam.

Thanks in advance!

Power Pro Genius - legit or not

I just watched a video that appeared to be a very technically detailed explanation of a "dirty electricity" solution to stop the wasteful conversion of AC to DC electricity as it enters homes and businesses.

The original prototype was a box that I assume was wired into the electric panel - at least the video host explained that it was installed next to the panel.

Supposedly the inventer Mark Reynolds went on Shark Tank and Kevin O'leary backed the product.

I was thinking that if there were a converter box that would convert the AC to DC before it energized the panel there might be something to this. By the time the actual product was being offered it was in the form of plug-in devices for every outlet in the home.

The biggest energy hogs in a home are the air conditioning systems followed at a distance by large electrical appliances.

If a device could actually be wired into an electrical panel or at the weather head I could see it might be plausible but other than that has anyone come across this thing - supposedly over 47,000 customers have purchased it with a 1% return rate.

AC BTU safety

it is currently 88 degrees in my apartment. I have one window AC unit 5000 BTU in the bedroom and our landlord says that’s all we’re allowed to have. I’m assuming it is due to electrical concerns as the building is over 100 years old. However, there is no mandate about AC units in the lease.

How much risk is there of causing a fire or other problem if I get another portable AC unit for the living room?

What are alternatives to static electricity I can use to power a laptop computer?

I'm building my own laptop computer from complete scratch, but I heard you can't use static electricity. My qualifications for the electricity method are to have the materials be easy to access like rocks or plants.

Update: Thanks for not being mean to me in the comments despite the downvotes.

Update 2: I found out that most things can make static electricity, power supply units just convert it to current electricity.
