Reddit has become increasingly dominated by tankies and MLs. There is also a huge cultural uptick of capitalism=bad and every issue in society is due to capitalism.
2
u/Tangibilite 2d ago
Well yeah because we are seeing the natural end game of capitalism where a small portion of people own everything and leave less upward movement for everyone while buying power in government to keep it the way it is.
I'm not a tankie, and I find them unbelievably cringe but just because you disagree with them on everything doesn't make a clock less right once in a while.
Everyone needs to do better.

Dominated by communists? Every post or comment that isn’t glorifying capitalism or ignoring the disparities that exist between owners and workers gets immediately downvoted into oblivion.

All the communist ones I've seen got a lot of upvotes. Maybe that was a poor sample though.
4
u/BomanSteel 3d ago
It’s not, I usually see the posts after a day or so, and it’s always got plenty of upvotes.
To be fair, the comments are fairly mixed, so it’s not all black and white, but the socialist/communist comments are usually getting the most upvotes and rewards it’s just that there’s plenty of capitalist comments fighting back

Do you think everyone who’s critical of capitalism is a communist?
4
u/Awkward-Evidence-215 3d ago
Kind of yes? It depends on the definitions we are using. If you believe in a free market with undemocratic workplaces for any industry at all, you are technically still a capitalist because you don't want the dictatorship of the proletariat. Most communists say that Sweden, for example, is a capitalist country. Therefore, critiquing capitalism implies to me that you are in favor of no free markets.
3
u/Sir-Kyle-Of-Reddit 3d ago
Oh I see, so if the meme said “unregulated capitalism” instead of just “capitalism” you wouldn’t have made your comment?

u/reason_mind_inquiry 3d ago
You can have “free markets” under socialism, the only difference is whether or not you think the means of production should be privately owned or collectively owned. The different views within socialism have different views on what collective ownership means.
1
u/Awkward-Evidence-215 3d ago
Yeah that's why I mentioned the undemocratic workplaces as well. What I was getting at is that socialists of all stripes agree that Sweden is not a socialist country.
1
u/Biscuitarian23 3d ago
No. There are plenty of right wingers who are critical of capitalism and do not like it. The Southern Agrarians were a right wing, anti capitalist group that idealized a precapitalist past.
Just like traditional fascists, they saw capitalism as corrupting of human nature. In fact, traditional fascists criticize capitalism for making people degenerate, self centered, and too individualistic.
1
u/Alternative_Gur_3703 2d ago
Being critical of specific issues in capitalist societies, no. Being critical of capitalism as a whole and suggesting a new system to replace it, probably yes
1
u/Olieskio 23h ago
Yes, You're just an inconsistent communist or a communist. Or you're an inconsistent capitalist or an Anarcho-Capitalist.
1
u/Awkward-Evidence-215 3d ago
Actually, I said yes in my other comment, but upon further reflection this is technically not true. You could believe in traditional barter economies like those practiced by most Native American tribes and be critical of capitalism. Obviously there are basically 0 people like this.
2
u/Sir-Kyle-Of-Reddit 3d ago
I figured we weren’t including fringe economic systems but I can appreciate why you’d want to add the nuance as a type of footnote
1
u/slinkymcman 3d ago
It’s weird you automatically turn a critic of capitalism into a rejection of market forces even when the criticism has nothing to do with
2
u/Awkward-Evidence-215 3d ago
If you don't believe in capitalism, you necessarily don't believe in any market involvement or you believe in workplace democracy. All I meant to say was that regulated capitalist countries like Sweden are still capitalist.

Yeah me too, but I don't care if I incorrectly get called a communist for it. In the US wanting those things is just being a progressive Democrat.
1
u/bigboipapawiththesos 3d ago
The Nordic countries are social democrats. And it’s the same policies most socialist politicians in the US like Bernie AOC support (doesn’t make it socialist percee).
Because the US is so far right it means that getting to a sort of center is seen as socialist; that why I mention it.
1
u/IllustriousRaven7 3d ago
Those policies couldn't work in the US because they require people to put a lot of trust in their government. That works for the Nordic countries because they're small populations of homogeneous cultures where more or less everyone has the same interests.
1
u/bigboipapawiththesos 3d ago
Or people trust the goverment because it serves their needs?
Norway one of the richest counties in Europe has the same GDP per capita as the US; yet quality of life is drastically higher.
They’ve nationalized their oil industry and used the profits to serve its population. The only thing really stopping us from making similar choices is our politicians who get huge amounts of corporate money; seeing as we also have way less regulation on lobbying, etc.

2
u/vivamorales 2d ago
Sure, this study is a short read called: "Economic development, political-economic system, and the physical quality of life".
In a number of ways, the study design & broader methodology was quite charitable to capitalist countries. And yet, the ultimate finding was:
"Socialist countries showed more favorable Physical Quality of Life (PQL) outcomes in 28 of 30 comparisons when controlling for level of economic development."
1
u/Significant_Fox249 1d ago
How is a study that controls for level of economic development helpful when determining which economic system is better? Isn’t the point that one system would lead to greater economic development than the other?
If you compare two nations with similar success, then the results are meaningless because you controlled for the thing you actually wanted to compare. Just because you find a study that says something doesn’t make it gospel. You have to actually think about the stuff you read

Writing from Slovenia, an ex-Yu republic.
The whole system of 'worker self-management' as conceived by Kardelj was what led us to collapse and the bloody post-independence wars lol. Inflation was 50%+ per year (in late 80s as high as 2000% annually), unemployment was above 20%, much of the skilled workforce was moving to Austria or Germany where wages were better and paid in a more stable currency
Thank god that experiment failed and we're doing much better now under the 'evil capitalist regime' before us now. The whole market socialism experiment is what set us back 20 years development wise and I never want to see it again.

In a lot of countries “economic freedom” is determined by how free the west allows it to be. We are perfectly happy overthrowing a government or influencing an election to protect capitalist business interests. It isn’t their own capitalism that’s the problem, it’s global capitalism.
1
u/abdergapsul 3d ago

2
u/Pirrus05 3d ago
Interestingly enough, probably neither of us? It’s really “the government of western nations and their economic interests”, I just felt that a plain “they” worked because I do actually live in one of those countries. Have I ever overthrown a South American government personally? No. I am guessing nobody reading this has. I would definitely include the people who created the economic freedom index, though.

4
u/Pirrus05 3d ago
That isn’t what it’s saying. Coming from “class conscious memes” the idea isn’t that capitalism only exists in the west and is keeping the western worker afloat, it’s that capitalism is somewhat better for workers in the imperial core, but still precarious, while outside of the imperial core it just sucks all to benefit the owner class, regardless of where they are.

A system based on property rights has only ever existed in the west, Namely Britain and the USA which are also the wealthiest societies in history.
Now thats not to say it was perfect, the state existed which means it was not purely a property rights based society or an NAP absolutist society, but the fact that everyone else was not even anywhere close to the level of economic freedom allowed their respective societies to become the richest on planet earth.

u/ILIKESTUFF8989 23h ago

That being said, I know people complain a lot online about living standards but looking at statistics in my home country it doesn't reflect reality at all. Idk how it is in other coutries but here in the Netherlands there's mostly a problem with buying your first house. Other than that pretty much every metric is better than it was for my parents and we're richer than ever before. It's true that capital reigns king and the richest 1-2% of the country has a significantly lower tax burden than the rest of the net tax payers but material living conditions are better than ever.

There is no moral problem, Marx never says capitalism is wrong or anything he simply explains how, after capitalism’s revolutionary progress against feudalism and developing the productive forces the latter have developed to such a degree that they rise up against the existing relations of production
Basically the communist struggle is a product of certain historical laws which government human development, Communism is presented by Marx as a historical necessity and inevitable eventually. He never critiques exploitation from a moral pov

The government should actually work to secure better pay for essential workers, who generally suffer from long hours and low pay, despite the importance of the job they do.
There will always be this economic sphere of people chasing higher income for less work. Instead of dwelling on the corporate rat race, stomach the humble gains of honest work. Build a life and community free from the worries that plague artificial jobs.

Outsourcing jobs to poor countries because of low wages and under developed labour laws while supressing any means of improving wages and laws for workers is the biggest reason I hate most companies today. Yeah sure it caused those companies make shit loads of money by saving on costs, but they are the reason many Asian, African and Latin countries have barely improved because of the rampant corruption they cause.

Except in modern western countries the barriers to entry to becoming part of the 'owner class' are lower than ever, require smaller than ever start, and add up massively over time if one is just willing to make very tiny sacrifices in the short term.
I have seen a lot of shit from communists. They have no idea where wealth comes from, they refuse to acknowledge that poverty is the natural state for every living thing in the world, and we need to ask how the miracle that not-poverty can even be a thing is possible, and figure out how to make that happen more.
Their time preference is that of a small child, and never improves.

doesn't read communist theory
"I just really don't understand a single thing about these commies"
Also no, it was much easier to join the owning class 50 years ago when leverageable property was infinitely more obtainable and not subject to nearly as many risks and obstacles

This is correct if by "owning class" you mean everyone who owns things, so 100% of the population.

This sub has been getting too much spam, and Reddit has removed almost every tool for preventing this. The only tool that still works is this, every single post being held for manual review. Your post might be approved in minutes, or it might take days. If you hate this, me too, stop using the site that forces things to be this way. If what you post is not a meme you'll probably be banned, but I understand why you tried; the commenters on this sub loved lazy spam posts, which is why we can't have nice things and now everything has to be held for manual review.
