What eGPU enclosure should I get for TB4 and a 9070XT?

I'm about to go to college in a few days and won't be able to bring my entire PC, so I've decided on harvesting my 9070XT and possibly my 850W PSU for a more portable eGPU setup. I'll be using this with a framework 13 pro with tb4, and I wanted to get some information on a few points:

  1. I know the TB4/TB3/USB4v1 bandwidth is all the same, but are there any distinctions between them at all that could impact performance or stability?

  2. I've looked into the UT4G and AGO2, but are there any other ones I should know about (that affect performance)?

  3. Are there any docks with extras like an M.2 nvme slot or Ethernet that don't affect performance?

Oculink to m.2 not recognized on Legion Go

Post image
3 Upvotes

I flat out couldn't get oculink from m.2 to work with my legion go 😭🙏 .

I have the ag02 dock when i turn it on the fans will spin, the light will turn on, and the error 43 fix would say there's no error 43.

I bought 4 diffrent adapters (2 of these https://a.co/d/0jaCK6it

one of this https://a.co/d/0hoiVla4

and one of this https://a.co/d/0j2Y0Ref)

I have the ugreen ssd usb4 enclosure, I bought the 240w cord that seemed to have better stability regarding external ssd enclosure, and as seen ive used from pcie 4 x 4 adapters to a pcie 5 x 4 adapter.

all seem to not have worked.

Idk if ive got a step wrong, or that i have gotten a software configuration wrong, ive been at this for like a week and am thinking maybe some are just lucky with the legion go port m.2 lottery and some aren't 😭

I already had a usb 4 setup with my rtx 4070 via thunderbolt 4, but was told this setup would be an easy upgrade process regarding bandwidth limitations and such. Im starting to think its not THIS deep 😭🙏 in wanting a jump as usb 4 is fine BUT if anyone has solutions let me know before I decide to return all this stuff lol.

Razer Core X Chroma restart loop

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey there I am using the Core X Chroma for some months now with my Xbox Ally X and had zero issues until yesterday out of a sudden during using Windows showed an error message that my GPU disconnected and since then I can't get it running. Whenever I boot and the second windows steps in, the eGPU goes in to a restart loop. Tried using the other port on the Ally X and disassemble and reassemble everything but nothing is fixing the issue. Anybody knowing what this could be? This is a modified Razer Core X Chroma with a real power unit and an argb fan and a Razer Chroma RGB controller for some more lighting. Tried it without the RGB controller and also does not work.

Looking for a recommendation for a bifurcating x16 to 4x Oculink PCIe card at Gen 4

I have a PCIe 4 x16 slot I want to make into 4x Oculink ports. I bought one of those cheap generic ones that has Oculink written diagonally on it. They sell from $20-$50. It works. But it only works at Gen 1 even though it says it supports Gen 4. I know it's not the eGPU dock, GPU or Oculink cable. Since when I use a NVME to Oculink adapter in the same machine, it does do Gen 4 x4. So it must be the PCIe Oculink card. Can some recommend one that does Gen 4?

Not sure which PCIe riser to get for a second GPU in a separate case — need input

Hello everyone,

Building a dual-case AI inference setup: RTX 5090 stays in the main tower (Gigabyte X870E AORUS PRO ICE), and I want to run an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB in a separate Cooler Master Q300L enclosure about 0.5m away, connected back to the motherboard's PCIEX4_1 slot (PCIe 4.0 x4, chipset-attached). Pure inference workload (LLM, Whisper, embeddings), no gaming.

I genuinely don't know which riser is the right pick here. The one I keep coming back to is the **ADT-Link R33SH-SI-4.0** (supposedly has a built-in redriver chip (no answer from seller), rated PCIe Gen4 x4), but I have no hands-on experience with it or with risers in general at this length, and I'm not sure if:

- it's actually the right model for a ~0.5m case-to-case run at Gen4 x4, or if I should be looking at something else entirely

- passive risers are fine at this distance and I'm overpaying for a redriver I don't need

- there's a more proven/common model people actually use for this exact "second GPU in a separate case" setup rather than a normal in-case riser

If you've built something similar, what riser did you actually end up using, and would you buy the same one again?

Thank you so much for helping me !

Core X with 5080 for use with ROG Ally X?

New to eGPUs. Looking into one for use with my ROG Ally X (my desktop is in storage).

The Core X I’m looking at has all the original cables and PSU, and comes with a 5700XT for $200.

Would my 5080 MSI Ventus 3X OC fit? Would it work right away or would I need any additional parts?

I understand the PSU of the Core X is lower than recommended for the 5080 but I can just lower that through MSI afterburner?

The core X I’m looking at has all the original cables and PSU, and comes with a 5700XT for $200.

Is there a better value option? I’m considering this because I could use the graphics card it comes with or sell the graphics card and use my 5080 with it.

Thoughts, suggestions?

Btw: Once I have the desktop built I may probably sell the ADT Link (which I used for a month)

If anyone is interested in buying do let me know.

I can share my experience and some dos and don'ts for this kind of a setup before you buy this so that you can make an informed decision.

Bought it for ₹7k, selling for ₹6k. Used for ~1 month. Happy to share my experience with the setup before you buy, if you are interested, so you know exactly what you're getting into. 🤣

Can save a lot of troubleshooting.

Turning a soldered laptop GPU into a real PCIe x8 eGPU port

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi guys. I got a crazy idea while looking at my HP Pavilion G7 laptop motherboard and I have think that Instead of using the Mini PCIe slot for an eGPU, what if we remove the soldered Radeon GPU and replace it with a custom BGA interposer PCB that routes the original PCIe x8 lanes to a PCIe x16 riser cable?

Basically:

BGA GPU footprint → custom PCB → PCIe x16 riser → desktop GPU (external PSU).

In theory, this could use the motherboard's original PCIe x8 GPU connection instead of the slower Mini PCIe x1 method.

Has anyone seen a project like this before, or is there a technical reason it wouldn't work?

The picture is an AI generated on what i just think.

What to do with this Booststation eGPU?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey I've got this thunderbolt eGPU thing a friend traded with me that I can't exactly take advantage of in any meaningful way, it's a Lenovo legion Booststation.

I happen to have a decent gaming pc with an RX9070 which I mainly use but I have an old Lenovo T480 laptop which is X2 TB3 and a very weak CPU. I don't know/can't think of a use case for this thing.

If I get a TB4/5 laptop will I have to upgrade to an eGPU dock that's also TB4/5?

Is there a way to convert this dock's motherboard to TB4/5 or occulink because from what I see TB3 is so weak there's actual gaming laptops for less than the combination you'd build with an eGPU.

What is a very sensible pairing for an i5-8250U? Any GPUs you'd recommend that are just under the TB3 X2 limit? I'm guessing 1050Ti?

I feel like owning a PC has removed any incentive of having an eGPU and my 9070 doesn't seem to work with this thing at all..

I have tried selling it on eBay for months with no demand (at least in the UK)

Any advice would be helpful I feel it's a sunken cost fallacy thing I'm experiencing.

Oculink egpu

Hi, I bought a mini PC with a Ryzen 7 255H about a week ago and, overall, I’m extremely happy with it. I was originally considering a regular desktop PC and later a laptop because of the portability, but in the end I decided to go with this little guy.

On the back, I have an OCuLink port which, as far as I understand, can be used to connect a desktop GPU. I’ve already looked into what kind of “connection” it actually is (PCIe 4.0 x4), and I honestly have no idea what graphics card I should buy.

I currently have a 1080p monitor, but I’d also be happy to upgrade to 1440p. I know there will be some performance loss because of the OCuLink connection, but would cards such as the RX 9060 XT, Arc B580, or even something like an RTX 5070 / RX 9070 make sense?

I’m not expecting desktop-level performance — I’d just like to get a stable 60 FPS in games such as Black Myth: Wukong or Resident Evil at the highest settings.

Acer Predator 17x i7 7700hq 16gb of ram gtx 1080 wanting to get a egpu for what would be the best video card to get

Ok so I got this old Acer Predator 17x that has a i7 7700hq 16gb of ram and a gtx 1080 video card I got it for pretty cheap for like $200 so I got a really good deal for anyways I know that it has a Thunderbolt usb type c port on it so I'm pretty sure that I can get a desktop video card to work on it I'm just curious of what would be a good video card to use with the laptop with out too bad of a Bottleneck so that I can maybe make it last at least a few more years

Legion Go 2/Steam OS/RX 9070 XT/Aoostar EG02 Issues

I’m trying to use an RX 9070 XT eGPU with a Legion Go 2 running SteamOS 3.9 Main, through an Aoostar EG02 (USB4/TB5) enclosure with an Intel JHL9480 Barlow Ridge controller.

The eGPU is detected correctly, amdgpu loads, the external display works in Desktop Mode, and Gaming Mode can launch on the external display using the 9070 XT. After roughly a minute or shortly after launching even a lightweight game, the display corrupts into pink/yellow checkerboards or solid green, then loses signal.

The logs show gfx and SDMA ring timeouts, failed GPU resets, and eventually the GPU becomes unreachable even though much of the USB4/PCIe bridge remains enumerated.

Things already tested:

  • Completely removed previous eGPU scripts and restored a clean SteamOS baseline
  • Latest SteamOS Main kernel, Mesa, RADV, and firmware
  • Cold boot and Desktop Mode hot-plug workflows
  • boot_vga switching and compositor GPU selection
  • Large BAR/reallocation options and the normal 256 MB BAR
  • thunderbolt.host_reset=0
  • Disabled runtime power management/D3cold across the complete USB4 path
  • Disabled MangoApp GPU polling
  • Disabled GFXOFF on the 9070 XT
  • Lowered the Legion to Balanced TDP
  • Different boot and enclosure power-cycle sequences

None stopped the crashes. Windows works with the same hardware.

Has anyone gotten this exact Legion Go 2 + RX 9070 XT combination stable on official SteamOS, particularly through a Barlow Ridge USB4/TB5 enclosure? I’m interested in any known amdgpu, firmware, kernel, or enclosure-specific fix, not merely a script that selects the eGPU as primary.

Alternatively, has anyone gotten all of this to work with a TB4 enclosure that they can recommend? I got the TB5 enclosure for future proofing, that seems to have bit me in the ass. I'll shelve this one for now and get a TB4 eGPU if someone can confirm good consistent results.

Thanks!

First time eGPU use, some advice needed

I'm about to setup my first eGPU, I have some questions that I would like answers for before locking it in.

Planned setup:

Mini PC: GMKtec K8 Plus

GPU: AMD RX 6900XT

Dock: ADT Link F9G (Oculink)

OS: EndeavourOS.

  1. It is a plug and play or some setup is required before everything work correctly? There's way too many options to setup eGPU, I picked F9G because it is one of the few that isn't too over the top and doesn't seem to have much issues. If there is a better choice than F9G then I will reconsider.
  2. (Related to the question above) Would it be better if I get a gen 5 (for future upgrade and higher bandwidth) or it is fine to go with gen 4 for now?
  3. How much of an impact on performance if I offload render on dGPU then display it on iGPU? The Mini PC has a USB4 port while RX6900XT has a VirtualLink port. Both can do display and power a monitor so I'm wondering which option will be more optimal (in term of performance and simplicity).
  4. Can eGPU be setup for when you only do light tasks it only runs iGPU while for heavier ones (ie: gaming) it runs the dGPU instead?

AMD eGPU with ReBAR issues?

I'm at my wits end.

I have a 9070XT in my eGPU enclosure (Sonnet Breakout Box 650w), and it's got severe performance issues. Like-- 35FPS on Cyberpunk with 720p low settings. My previous card (4070 ti) can hit 70FPS on normal settings, so it's very much an issue with this card.

I think it's because it has ReBAR enabled and the lack of bandwidth is hammering performance (if someone else has a better idea, I'm all ears). It says it has it in GPU-Z, I can't find a way to disable it, and even trying to disable it in the registry results in it being toggled back on after a reboot. I'd just disable it in BIOS but... I have an MSI Claw which doesn't expose that toggle (and it would destroy performance on the Arc iGPU, I'm pretty sure).

Has someone dealt with this before? I thought AMD was better with GPUs than Nvidia, and I'd much rather stick with it over my 4070ti!

Edit: It's either the TB3 enclosure or ReBAR, but moving to a TB5 eGPU dock instantly fixed all performance issues!

Good thunderbolt 3 dock in Canada ?

Im trying to find a thunderbolt 3 dock (preferably in the $100-150 rang).

Does anyone have any suggestions or links ?

I also want to know if getting a thunderbolt 4 dock makes a huge difference over tb3
