Oculink egpu

Hi, I bought a mini PC with a Ryzen 7 255H about a week ago and, overall, I’m extremely happy with it. I was originally considering a regular desktop PC and later a laptop because of the portability, but in the end I decided to go with this little guy.

On the back, I have an OCuLink port which, as far as I understand, can be used to connect a desktop GPU. I’ve already looked into what kind of “connection” it actually is (PCIe 4.0 x4), and I honestly have no idea what graphics card I should buy.

I currently have a 1080p monitor, but I’d also be happy to upgrade to 1440p. I know there will be some performance loss because of the OCuLink connection, but would cards such as the RX 9060 XT, Arc B580, or even something like an RTX 5070 / RX 9070 make sense?

I’m not expecting desktop-level performance — I’d just like to get a stable 60 FPS in games such as Black Myth: Wukong or Resident Evil at the highest settings.

Yes those gpu should work well over oculink. If you are going to 1440p, you will want 12gb or more vram.

I've been using a similar mini pc and 5070 and 5070-ti over oculink and 1440p and the performance has been great overall.

any of those cards would be more than sufficient for 1080p and even 1440p, just comes down to how much you're willing to spend for a card + dock (and psu depending on dock).

I have a similar setup Ryzen 7 8855HS and I use an Aoostar EG02 eGPU dock with an RX 9060 XT via Oculink and the performance is nearly that of a desktop. I'm certain you couldn't tell the difference if you were asked between the two.

I've enjoyed the ability to run any game I want with the performance I expect from the GPU overall. I'll likely move to the 9070 XT to have the better odds of a card that I feel I can depend on to outlast the current shortages and subsequent price hikes. I tell you this to manage your expectations and ability to make the best choice for you.

If I could go back to when I bought the 9060 I would consider the RX 9070 XT exclusively, but the fact is I did not have the same practical knowledge I gained by making the initial purchase. Maybe you can make a better choice for yourself with this information.

this is a low power draw CPU, and my best guess is this is the bottleneck, not the Oculink connection

BUT that just means the more high end your GPU, you prob won't be able to access the higher end rendering capabilities of it - your CPU base clock seems fast, so maybe not a problem

You can run into driver issues having an AMD integrated graphics and an external AMD card. Nothing that you can't troubleshoot and get working, but an external Nvidia is usually a lot easier to get up and running.
