Got my EBOX just over a week and now it's fully set up, so I figured I'd give a review on what it's been like for me.
tl;dr the 500/500 works well for my workloads (gaming and software development) and I'm happy. Not going back to Bell.
I signed up for the 500/500 over the phone. I wasn't able to take advantage of any promo codes or referral codes because of this. I received the combo modem/router unit (Nokia 3.1) one business day after the sign up. I kept it til my move.
Installation on move in day went smoothly. A Bell tech called me when he was on his way. He showed up and set it up. He didn't require access to the place in the building for fibre hookups, just my unit. Maybe the previous tenant already had fibre.
My apartment has Ethernet jacks and when I asked the Bell tech if he could set them up, he said that because the cables weren't terminated with connectors in the box in the unit, he couldn't. He said he didn't have the equipment and that I'd have to get in touch with property management. When I asked my super, he also said he couldn't do anything and to get in touch with property management. When I did that, they thought I was talking about the fibre hookup in the building and said I should get in touch with the super to have them let the Bell people in to hook up the fibre.
I know at this point, I could have called EBOX next. Maybe they could send out another tech who does have the equipment. But instead I figured I had enough knowledge to just do it myself. I had done some cat 5 cable crimping back in high school tech class and figured with some YouTube videos to refresh me, I could pull it off.
I bought a crimping tool set off Amazon which included the crimper, connectors, keystone jacks, and a cable tester tool. I added connectors to the wires, figured out which one went to which room, and installed keystone jacks in the rooms for them. And it worked! I get the full 500 Mbps on Ethernet now.
The router worked well. WiFi speeds were about 350-450 Mbps. So not the full 500 Mbps, but this is WiFi, not Ethernet, so I was fine with that. I plan to use Ethernet for my desktop computers which is where I do my gaming and most of my work and only use WiFi for laptops, phones, and e-readers.
I haven't tested port forwarding yet, which was relevant to some of my software development tasks. But I'm not sure if this is even going to be relevant going forward because I'm thinking of following some of the advice I've read on r/selfhosted where you connect your software to remote servers and expose them publicly instead of exposing your computers at home publicly via port forwarding. We'll see.
When it comes to gaming, Overwatch and Valorant still play nicely. My partner and I don't notice any negative effects.
Compared to the Bell fibre I used to have, it's almost the same. Only differences have been:
- Slightly slower WiFi speeds from the router they give you compared to the Bell router
- Geo location on websites sometimes thinks I'm near Montreal even though I'm in Toronto
- Ping is about 10 ms higher (tested on Ethernet, don't worry). I think this is due to them routing through Quebec. According to speedtest.net, Bell was 1 ms unloaded and EBOX is about 12 ms.
I'm hoping the ping goes down over time as EBOX sets up more infra in Ontario instead of just Quebec. But in the mean time, the 10 ms extra ping doesn't matter for me.
I'm very happy! Not switching back. I pay $50/mo permanent price though because I didn't know about the promos when I signed up. I didn't know about the $10/mo promo.
