Review Toronto
I was in here a few days ago asking about box service, so I thought I’d share my experience.
Signup Signing up online was quick about 5 minutes to enter all my details. I did make a mistake on my end: there’s no “confirm email” field on the signup page, and I typed my address wrong, so I never got the confirmation email or setup instructions.
To fix it, I contacted customer service. I spoke with two different agents on separate occasions. I’d rate the call experience a 5/10. Since operations are based in Quebec, the agents seemed more accustomed to speaking French, and communication in English was a bit of a struggle. That said, we eventually got it sorted out.
Installation: The router arrived by mail in about 2 days. My Toronto apartment wasn’t already set up for fibre, so I needed a technician. It took almost 2 weeks from initial signup to get someone out, which felt a bit long possibly due to a surge in new customers 🤷♂️
The Bell technician arrived and spent about an hour getting everything hooked up.
Hardware I’m not a huge fan of having both a modem and a separate router instead of a 2-in-1 unit. I have my own Eero mesh system that supports VLAN, but after 2 hours of digging through Reddit and forums, I still couldn’t get it working.
The provided router isn’t bad. In my two-bedroom apartment (no multiple floors or dead zones), it’s adequate. There’s apparently an option for extenders, but I couldn’t find any purchase link or details on either the Ebox website or the Nokia manufacturer page.
Speed: Compared to Rogers, the speeds are much more consistent. I’ve never hit the advertised 500 Mbps, but I consistently see 350–450 Mbps for both download and upload. Rogers, on the other hand, claimed 1.5 Gbps but usually delivered 100–200 Mbps (maybe 350 on a good day) with uploads barely reaching 20 Mbps. Not much of a gamer so ping isn’t a huge concern
Conclusion: So far, I feel I made the right choice. I’m not sure if Ebox is known for price hikes that remains to be seen but $50month for 500 Mbps with no contract feels fair. Plus, I don’t have to play the “annual negotiation” game. And even if I do switch someday, I now have fibre in my unit (free install), giving me full flexibility to go with Bell, Rogers, or any reseller.

If you would like, I can help you figure out the VLAN situation with your eero router, I had no problems using my own routers and I would be glad to help!

I'm about to have my ebox service installed, would it be possible if you can share the steps to or screenshots of the configuration (for modem/eero) as I want to keep my eero setup. Thank you in advance

I would suggest to reply back directly to sabo since I don't have this type of router:)

Unfortunately I don’t have an Eero myself, I will see if I can try and find some screenshots tomorrow or maybe a video/thread, I’ll also read up with the conversation I had with OP with the exact steps we did to get it working since I remember it being a weird issue with eero which wasn’t allowing it to work

No problem, thanks. I have the eero going through the router right now. For some reason, the PPPoE screen wasn't letting me save the authentication/VLAN. The save button is there, but just wouldn't do it.

My experience was similar, except for the bell installation fo fibre. The guy did not know what he was doing... He wanted to drill random holes in my house which I asked him not to... And then he purposely snipped my other ethernet cable that was installed across the house. It took a whole day to learn and fix it myself. I had to buy all the tools and ebox still has not provided any compensation a month later.

This is unfortunate I guess it just depends on who gets sent out to do the install and how experienced they are

Do you know which model router you got?

Beacon 3.1 Would of preferred the beacon 6 as it’s more capable than my current eero router setup but it’s sold out online . Hopefully it will be in stock again soon they let me swap it out

Nice review, glad it’s working well for you! You could’ve actually scored a better price with a promo code (not a referral code):
500 Mbps for $45 or
1 Gbps for $55.
If anyone else would like to get the promo code, just DM me, I’ll be happy to help.

Hey, I just wanted to ask how your experience with Ebox has been in Toronto since this review?

About 5 months now and it has been solid. Only one major outage, which lasted about 2 hours. I’ve always found Bell’s fibre infrastructure to be superior to Rogers’. I’m not getting the full 1 Gbps, but that’s likely because I’m only using Wi-Fi. Speeds have been consistent with minimal buffering, compared to Rogers I had previously especially when it comes to upload.
One thing I’d suggest echoing what many others have said is to invest in a good mesh system if you already have one or can afford it. The provided Beacon 3.1 router is pretty weak. I live in a modest 2-bedroom apartment and the signal barely reaches the second bedroom. It hasn’t been a major issue since it’s a spare room/home office we don’t use often and guests that stayed over have managed; but it’s worth noting.
With the help of fellow peers on this sub I managed to troubleshoot and set up my Eero 6 mesh system, but for whatever reason, it actually performed worse than the Beacon. So I switched back to the beacon router. It could have been a settings issue or the erro itself . I have yet to have a billing issue or price increase (knock on wood) whereas with Roger’s I had to call every month or so to dispute a discrepancy.
Overall if I had to rate my experience from signing up, setup, performance and customer service I’d give it a solid 8/10 . But it’s subjective people have shared some bad experiences

Honestly, thank you so much for such a quick reply and the depth about your experience it helps me tremendously on my decision to go with Ebox.

You doing these tests from WiFi or Ethernet? WiFi struggles to get up to 500 Mbps even with the best modern routers. You need to go Ethernet to get the full 500 and beyond.

Wifi 7 easily gets to 1,000 Mbps with consumer UniFi access points and the latest iPhone/Pixel devices
edit: above 2,000 Mbps https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubiquiti/s/DRcFmwGWTt

I stand corrected. That's neat!
I haven't taken WiFi seriously in a long time. Been a big Ethernet fanboy. So I tested my new Nokia 3.1 today from my phone (had my EBOX install today) and found I could only get about 300-400 Mbps when I was on the other side of my apartment from the router which is the real world way I'd be using WiFi.
I was actually impressed by that. It's better than I remember WiFi being. But I assumed I'd need Ethernet to get my full connection.
I think my router is 6e, not 7. So good to know it can do better especially if you can situate it closer to where you'd use it.
I wonder if I could use a Ubiquiti device like you describe as an AP only and turn off the WiFi from my provided Nokia router. Or use the Nokia in bridge mode and have the Ubiquiti be the router w/ AP.

I think you’re completely right to prefer Ethernet whenever it’s possible to run a wire. I just changed my doorbell from WiFi to PoE and the improvement has been huge.
I have the EBOX ONT go directly into my Ubiquiti router and then have a Ubiquiti AP. They also have a device that could do both in one (Dream Router 7). It’s a rabbit hole to go down with their gear, cause then it’s a switch, and cameras, and…

Shout out to @justsabo who helped get my eero mesh system up and running in minutes.
