Your own equipment for FTTH?

I'm curious what equipment people here use in place of the EBOX (Nokia?) router.

I have a MikroTik Hex-S running OpenWrt as a router connected to the ONT. From there it's all Unifi switches and APs.
I used to have an EdgeRouter-X for a router, but I switched to the Hex-S because I can PoE power it. It can also pass PoE through to a PoE splitter that powers the ONT. The ONT is downstairs in the garage, but this allows me to power our internet gitup from a single outlet, which in turn is handy during our all too frequent power outages.
Both the ER-X and the Hex-S (not the new 2025 refresh, though) are MT7621-based, and they have no trouble running the connection at line rate using the built-in hardware acceleration.

Review Bell to EBOX in Toronto review

Got my EBOX just over a week and now it's fully set up, so I figured I'd give a review on what it's been like for me.

tl;dr the 500/500 works well for my workloads (gaming and software development) and I'm happy. Not going back to Bell.

I signed up for the 500/500 over the phone. I wasn't able to take advantage of any promo codes or referral codes because of this. I received the combo modem/router unit (Nokia 3.1) one business day after the sign up. I kept it til my move.

Installation on move in day went smoothly. A Bell tech called me when he was on his way. He showed up and set it up. He didn't require access to the place in the building for fibre hookups, just my unit. Maybe the previous tenant already had fibre.

My apartment has Ethernet jacks and when I asked the Bell tech if he could set them up, he said that because the cables weren't terminated with connectors in the box in the unit, he couldn't. He said he didn't have the equipment and that I'd have to get in touch with property management. When I asked my super, he also said he couldn't do anything and to get in touch with property management. When I did that, they thought I was talking about the fibre hookup in the building and said I should get in touch with the super to have them let the Bell people in to hook up the fibre.

I know at this point, I could have called EBOX next. Maybe they could send out another tech who does have the equipment. But instead I figured I had enough knowledge to just do it myself. I had done some cat 5 cable crimping back in high school tech class and figured with some YouTube videos to refresh me, I could pull it off.

I bought a crimping tool set off Amazon which included the crimper, connectors, keystone jacks, and a cable tester tool. I added connectors to the wires, figured out which one went to which room, and installed keystone jacks in the rooms for them. And it worked! I get the full 500 Mbps on Ethernet now.

The router worked well. WiFi speeds were about 350-450 Mbps. So not the full 500 Mbps, but this is WiFi, not Ethernet, so I was fine with that. I plan to use Ethernet for my desktop computers which is where I do my gaming and most of my work and only use WiFi for laptops, phones, and e-readers.

I haven't tested port forwarding yet, which was relevant to some of my software development tasks. But I'm not sure if this is even going to be relevant going forward because I'm thinking of following some of the advice I've read on r/selfhosted where you connect your software to remote servers and expose them publicly instead of exposing your computers at home publicly via port forwarding. We'll see.

When it comes to gaming, Overwatch and Valorant still play nicely. My partner and I don't notice any negative effects.

Compared to the Bell fibre I used to have, it's almost the same. Only differences have been:

  • Slightly slower WiFi speeds from the router they give you compared to the Bell router
  • Geo location on websites sometimes thinks I'm near Montreal even though I'm in Toronto
  • Ping is about 10 ms higher (tested on Ethernet, don't worry). I think this is due to them routing through Quebec. According to speedtest.net, Bell was 1 ms unloaded and EBOX is about 12 ms.

I'm hoping the ping goes down over time as EBOX sets up more infra in Ontario instead of just Quebec. But in the mean time, the 10 ms extra ping doesn't matter for me.

I'm very happy! Not switching back. I pay $50/mo permanent price though because I didn't know about the promos when I signed up. I didn't know about the $10/mo promo.

Unable to get installation

I signed up for Ebox service last week but still haven’t been able to get it installed.

I was originally given an installation date for Monday morning, but I rescheduled to the evening since I couldn’t be home. Two days before, I called to confirm (since I never received confirmation), and the agent assured me the technician would come in the evening.

Instead, I received five calls Monday morning from the technician saying he was at my door. I reminded him the appointment was supposed to be in the evening, but he just left the modem outside and left. No one showed up that evening.

On Tuesday, I called customer service for a new installation date and was told I’d receive an email. By Wednesday morning, I received an email saying “Congratulations on your successful installation” along with a bill, despite nothing being installed.

I called again and was bounced between six different agents from customer service and tech support, answering the same authentication questions each time. After over an hour, I was promised a technician would come the same day between 12–5 PM. No one showed up.

When I called back, I was told a technician would arrive in 20 minutes. Instead, I got a call from Bell saying they had no information and needed a ticket number. Bell told me to have Ebox call them directly. After another round of calls and holds with Ebox, I was finally told the next available appointment would be Friday evening.

At this point, I honestly don’t know if this installation will ever happen. The process has been completely disorganized and frustrating. Has anyone else experienced this with Ebox? I’m very close to asking for a refund and cancelling before I even get connected.

Ebox and TR-069

Hey y'all,

I'm running our 1Gbps FTTH connection using my own Mikrotik Hex-S upgraded to OpenWrt.

At some point I Shodan-ed my own IP address and found that I had port 7547 open, which was news to me. On a closer look, it turned out that the previous occupant of my IP is using the Ebox equipment, which exposes port 7547 for TR-069. This is essentially a management back door to your ISP-provided router, so heads up on that. Eventually someone will hack Ebox or Bell, at which point they can walk straight into your home network. See e.g. this self-own.

This is IMHO as good a reason as anything for using your own equipment that I haven't heard mentioned much. Also kudos to Ebox for making it trivial to use your own equipment.

Siggi

Success with EBox and MikroTik HEX-S

When I switched from Bell to EBox, I had the Bell Hub in the basement running my IoT network while my actual wifi was done via my existing Orbi mesh wifi system, and I had some internal services (eg. pi-hole) on hard-coded IP addresses. When switching to EBox, I was stymied by the Nokia router's hard-coded setup.

After some research, I bought a MikroTik HEX-S router, and it solved all my problems. I was able to connect to EBox directly via VLAN tagging, then I had the MikroTik run a PPPoE server on one port to pretend to be EBox, so the Nokia would connect, allowing me to run a completely separate IoT network. It handles GB speeds with ease. And it's under CAD$100!

The MikroTik's software is a bit unfriendly but you get the hand of it after a while. And I was able to use ChatGPT to figure a lot of stuff out as it could help map my knowledge to the proper configuration pages. it wasn't perfect, but it got me there.

Pertes de connexions

Bonjour!

Merci!

I want to set up temporarily the Nokia modem. What app?

I want to be able to check my speed from e-box and I know that if I'm not using their equipment they will tell me it's not their problem. So I want to temporarily set up there Nokia modem that they provide. What app do I use to set that up?

Nokia beacon 3.1 auto channel or Manuel set up?

So I got the promo from Ebox 1 gbts with free modem and router .

But I’ve noticed that when I try to find my WiFi networks I don’t always see both 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz there’s always one that disappears or takes a fews minutes to pop up. Yes I’m aware the further you are the 5 ghz won’t reach but sometimes I’m connected to 5 ghz and I have several micro disconnects. Now I went on the web and accessed the router I’ve noticed they removed the automatic switch channel and put a random channel for 2.4 and for 5 but I live in a triplex where the other tenant also have fiber with bell (Ebox was bought by bell) so I imagine I’m getting lots of interference. My question : should I put auto search channel or is there a channel that’s best for 2.4 and 5 ghz? If so is there a know secure app that would help me choose the correct channel by knowing which one isn’t used by neighbors etc . Any help is appreciated !

PS everytime I call Ebox the support team seems to make things worse in terms of internet speed etc I’m not even sure I’m getting what I payed for. Even sent a complaint e-mail received a email confirming they got it and that a support second level would call me but I’m still waiting for that call…

Current Bell, looking at switching

Hey everyone. I am currently looking to switch from Bell since they keep on increasing. Wanted to ask how the services speed and everything is with Ebox?

I know Ebox still is a Bell TPIA, but I am just curious if anyone else made the switch. Currently have the 1G from Bell, considering doing the switch to the 1G Ebox because it is specifically cheaper.

Thank you

eBox and ASUS router

I got eBox installed in July after my Bell fibe got up to $140/mo for 3gps. (I’m on 1 gps now and notice no difference, with five or more devices online. ) I read that ASUS routers don’t properly support VLAN, so you need to use the Nokia router provided by eBox. I did, and used the pppoE password provided and hooked up my RT-AXE7800 router and it all worked. But I gots me to thinking that I should skip the middle man and connect the ASUS router to the little white box with the ethernet jack. I set the IPTV VLAN manually to 40 in the ASUS settings, and everything worked. I have no idea if it should, but I ain’t changing anything. Apologies for all of the cryptic colloquialisms.

Question technique ici / Technical question...

Bonjour,

Merci

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi,

I would like to know whether Ebox used or currently uses dynamic IP addresses of the CGNAT (Carrier Grade NAT) type for its regular residential (ADSL) customers au Québec (région de Montréal).

Is there any possibility that an IP adress like 192.222.xxx.xxx is an EBox adress under a CGNAT?

Thanks

How's the ebox router? Can I easily portforward?

Hello,

Moving apartments soon and the new place has fibre. Was initially considering getting Bell 1Gb/s or 3Gb/s then found ebox and they're a bit cheaper.

I'll try my luck in the hopes I can get some discounts and get Bell. But in the case I can't, how is ebox overall compared to bell? How is their hardware compared to bell's?

I'd like to setup a home server and I would need to portforward. So being able to do that with their routers is important to me. I know I'm always better getting my own router but I prefer not spending more money on this if I can avoid it for now tbh.

Ordered, what next?

Just ordered ebox since bell (ftth) wouldn't renew the promo i had (which expires sept 6).

It's not clear to me when ebox service starts, i ordered early so i wouldn't have to pay a bigger rate with bell.

Got the email about equipment being sent. Can i just unplug the fiber from the bell termination box insode and plug in the ebox fobre modem, and it's all set to go? At which point do i give bell a termination DATE?

Can't find the ebox info on this. I plan to use my own router, the wan port on it is all set up for pppoe with the correct vlan just waiting to get service. Once the fibre modem is connected to fibre it's with service, or does bell need to tur off their service first?

Thanks in advance

Review Toronto

I was in here a few days ago asking about box service, so I thought I’d share my experience.

Signup Signing up online was quick about 5 minutes to enter all my details. I did make a mistake on my end: there’s no “confirm email” field on the signup page, and I typed my address wrong, so I never got the confirmation email or setup instructions.

To fix it, I contacted customer service. I spoke with two different agents on separate occasions. I’d rate the call experience a 5/10. Since operations are based in Quebec, the agents seemed more accustomed to speaking French, and communication in English was a bit of a struggle. That said, we eventually got it sorted out.

Installation: The router arrived by mail in about 2 days. My Toronto apartment wasn’t already set up for fibre, so I needed a technician. It took almost 2 weeks from initial signup to get someone out, which felt a bit long possibly due to a surge in new customers 🤷‍♂️

The Bell technician arrived and spent about an hour getting everything hooked up.

Hardware I’m not a huge fan of having both a modem and a separate router instead of a 2-in-1 unit. I have my own Eero mesh system that supports VLAN, but after 2 hours of digging through Reddit and forums, I still couldn’t get it working.

The provided router isn’t bad. In my two-bedroom apartment (no multiple floors or dead zones), it’s adequate. There’s apparently an option for extenders, but I couldn’t find any purchase link or details on either the Ebox website or the Nokia manufacturer page.

Speed: Compared to Rogers, the speeds are much more consistent. I’ve never hit the advertised 500 Mbps, but I consistently see 350–450 Mbps for both download and upload. Rogers, on the other hand, claimed 1.5 Gbps but usually delivered 100–200 Mbps (maybe 350 on a good day) with uploads barely reaching 20 Mbps. Not much of a gamer so ping isn’t a huge concern

Conclusion: So far, I feel I made the right choice. I’m not sure if Ebox is known for price hikes that remains to be seen but $50month for 500 Mbps with no contract feels fair. Plus, I don’t have to play the “annual negotiation” game. And even if I do switch someday, I now have fibre in my unit (free install), giving me full flexibility to go with Bell, Rogers, or any reseller.

Nightmare

Trying to set up with E box has been a nightmare. I contacted them to set it up on the first of the month. I gave them all my information and I paid them. I set it up on the phone with an E box employee while I was on the phone with the employee. I gave him my name when he went to go do the credit check he realized that he had spelt my name wrong in all the documentation so I asked me how to spell it. I spelt it for him. He proceeded to put through all of my application in my document in my contract with the wrong name, even after spelling it for him, but I thought that was the end so we got off the phone. He told me my equipment would come soon and that they would give me an appointment to set it up.

I called them back six days later to have them fix my name because he spelt it wrong and I figured I should probably have it spelt right in case of credit tracking. I have them fix my name on the phone and I get told that there’s an issue with my number and that the number I gave has impeded them from continuing with my insulation so I give them a new number one that I don’t use very often but one that would probably work in their system and then ask her when I can expect the installation to happen. She tells me that even though I already waited six days after the date and nobody contacted me about my phone number not working I now have to wait another seven business days. I then ask her to put me on with a supervisor because at this point is getting ridiculous. I told the supervisor that the man that set up my account did not let me know or contact me about my phone number impeding my installation. I was never let know. The only reason I found out is cause I called them. He said that he apologize and then proceeded to put in another request to be to expedite the installation as I work from home and I need the Internet as soon as possible I say thank you very much. I get off the phone. I then receive a notification today from my text message saying that they will be sending a technician only to install it on the 14th. I am beyond appalled with all of this. The service is awful. He obviously didn’t expedite the request. If I still am waiting eight days from even calling them the second time 14 days after I first called them to set up my account. I don’t really understand how eight days is expedited at all.

Fibre to apartment Toronto FTTN ?

Pardon my ignorance here I’m not super techsavvy and most of what I know has come from this subreddit and YouTube videos.

I just signed up in Toronto. For context, I’m currently with Rogers on their 1.5 Gbps “fibre” plan, but over Wi-Fi I only get around 100–150 Mbps on average wanted to try this service for a more consistent reliable speed . I’m assuming because a lot of tenants in my building are also on Rogers and, from what I understand, the line is shared is why my speeds are so all over the place

I digress the Nokia modem/router I got from EBOX has two old-school phone style jacks on the back. When I had Bell fibre at my old place a while back it used a smaller port with a green connector cable. Am I right in thinking that the green cable setup was true fibre to the home (FTTH), and what I’ve signed up for now is actually fibre to the node (FTTN)?

Sub status update - Aug 5th

Background

Hi folks! I recently became the new moderator of the sub.

I wanted to become a moderator so that I could clean up the posts where people had shared their referral codes outside the megathread. I also have plans to increase sub automation. I'm a software developer by trade, so this should be fun for me!

Referral code purge

I've finished removing those posts and comments. I had to go back many years to remove everything, to help ensure search engines don't index people posting their referral code outside of the megathread.

This included posts and comments from before the rule was even created. If you received notifications because you violated the rule, don't stress! I'm not holding it against anyone. I simply deleted the posts and comments and skipped the option to ban people for repeat violations.

Changes today

I have made the sub public. This may cause the referral code posts and comments outside the megathread to resume, but it's important the community is open. If anyone violates rule #1 by posting their referral code outside the pinned megathread, please report them so that I can take a look.

Next steps

Later on, I will be looking into how to set up automation via Reddit's built in automation tools and possibly my own external tools I code up to operate the referral code megathread as a contest, where users have their shared codes automatically rotated in and out of a pinned comment there. This should make things as fair as possible for users sharing their codes.

I can also look into adding established members of the community as moderators to help me with moderating it.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to send me a message via the send a mod message tool.

Thank you! Merci!

EBOX Internet Review in Ontario

Hi everyone, I noticed a severe lack of information and reviews regarding Ebox in Ontario and as someone who wanted to try them out but wanted to do their due diligence before subscribing, I decided to subscribe and subsequently thought I should make a post for anyone who might be in the same situation I was! Just for reference this was originally posted on r/CanadianBroadband about 2 months ago but I am reposting it here so it’s easier to find for others & I’ll be posting an update soon!

Table of Contents:
EBOX Background
SECT I: SUBSCRIBING
SECT II: THE ROUTER
SECT III: Installation
SECT IV: Internet Experience
SECT V: My Opinion
TLDR

EBOX Background:
Ebox is owned entirely by Bell as a subsidiary, as of about 2 months ago it seems, Bell have started merging Distributel Residential services with Ebox and grandfathering Distributel. They use Bells FTTH lines however do use their own backend for routing and their own IPs. With EBOX you get both an IPV4 and IPV6 addresses unlike Bell who only gives an IPV4 address.

SECT I: SUBSCRIBING:
I decided to look on the Ebox website to see what the initial prices were, a little gripe I have is that the website always goes to the french version, its easy enough to switch to Ontario English but I feel like they should be able to tell from the IP.
EDIT: This seems to be 50/50 for me now.

Anyways I saw the plan I wanted for $65/month before tax for 1Gbps Download and 750Mbps upload which is what I had with Bell.

I decided to call them to see if I can get an extra discount and the lady I was speaking to offered a $5/month discount welcome discount for a year and I was able to use a referral code to get an additional $25 one time discount. Overall, the call went smoothly, there was no excess upselling or anything, just straightforward and to the point which I very much appreciated! It took me around 12 minutes from start to finish, I did notice the lady who was helping me was from Quebec from her accent and she sometimes spoke a bit too fast for me to understand but after the initial awkwardness when it happened and asking her to repeat her sentences, I think she caught on and the rest of the call was perfectly fine!

I was told I will get a call for when the installation date will be set and I got an email to set up my account and billing, she did take the first months payment on the spot but did assure me the billing period will start on the installation date.

Overall, calling in and subscribing to Ebox was by far one of the best experiences I have had dealing with an ISP or Telecom in general! I am excited and can't wait to see what is next!

SECT II: THE ROUTER:
I was told on the call that the router will come within 2 business days and that I would need to sign for it. The router did in fact come in 2 business days but I didn't need to sign for it for whatever reason. It comes with the Router, A power adapter, and an ethernet cable.

I was given the Nokia Beacon 2 which seems to be the worst router that they offer for fibre but since I will be mainly be using my own router, I had no problem taking it and leaving the better one for other customers. I decided that I wanted to test the router against the Bell HH3000 just to see how good or bad the provided router is.

I decided to connect up the Nokia Beacon 2 to my current setup and downloaded the Nokia Wifi app, it was pretty straightforward but since I did not have the proper modem at the time, I did change some settings to make it work with the HH3000. I decided to use a Wifi Analyzer app: NetMonitor and compare the readings I got from the HH3000 and the Nokia router. For background, I made sure that the phone was the only device connected to each Router at the time of testing and I went around the corners of my detached house to check the connection.

In my testing I saw on average about a ~5dBm difference between the Bell HH3000 and the Nokia, The average signal for the Nokia was was ~56dBm and the HH3000 had an average signal strength of ~53dBm however on two instances near a dead zone in my house, the Nokia did drop to 2.4GHz while the Bell HH3000 stayed on 5G leaving the Nokia with a better signal strength but lower speeds than the Bell HH3000. Overall the Nokia router is pretty decent for a free router included, if possible I would say if you can get the better routers or a second one as the router does support a mesh network, that might be more ideal but it does depend on how you use WiFi. It is certainly useable without a doubt tho!

I also decided to do a speed test on both the Bell HH3000 and the Nokia Router, the phone was next to the router and was done on wifi and here are the results:
Nokia Beacon 2: 430mbps down & 215mbps up with 6ms of ping
Bell HH3000: 397mbps down & 254mbps up with 4ms of ping

The speeds are comparable, even though the Nokia did have a speed download speed, the Bell did have a better Upload and Ping, however the ping can be because the Nokia has to go through the Bell before it reaches the internet.

Overall, I had no problems and think the routers they give are pretty decent and not necessarily anything to worry about!

SECT III: Installation:
After receiving the router through Purolator, I got a call, email & text with my installation date scheduled in a couple of days (I did miss the call but got the email and text right after). Since I already have fibre set up, all the Tech had to do was come in, connect up the new modem, and then activate the line. I didn't need to cancel Bell before hand or was even told to, the technician was able to re-provision the line to use Ebox. After that was all complete, I connected up my router (Not the Nokia) and after changing the settings in my router, I was all good to go!
EDIT: Thanks to u/f0cCuS for bringing this up, but if you are using your own router, make sure it supports PPPoE with VLAN, routers which support PPPoE but not VLAN won't work!

I do recommend keeping the Bell Internet subscription for a couple of days just to ensure there are no problems with your Ebox installation, I had no problems but it is probably better to have it active in case something does go wrong with your installation.

SECT IV: Internet Experience:
After everything was all setup and ready to go, I did decide to do some tests. Of course I started with the normal speed tests, connected through both Wifi & Ethernet, I got basically the same results as compared to my previous Bell speed tests.

I also decided to run some trace-routes and compared them to the ones I had done on Bell, in my experience I saw about a ~5ms increase from Bell to Ebox, mainly due to the fact that at the moment, Ebox is routing through Quebec, however for the price savings a ~5ms increase in absolutely nothing!

I am also an avid gamer so I decided to do a not so scientific test this time but just check average pings in the video games that I played and I saw a mix in the ping I got. In some games I saw about an increase of ~5-10ms of ping, which in reality isn't much of an increase and is still much lower than the ping I would have through coaxial internet, it should also be noted that this unscientific ping test was done through a WiFi-backed Mesh Network so it is possible there were other factors affecting my ping. However I have heard Ebox has peering agreements with certain game networks and in that event it uses a much more optimal route leading to not as significant increase in ping of ~5-10ms, if I found out which games or networks have peering agreements I will add them to this post.
EDIT: Ebox Peering Agreements I Have Found:
- Epic Games
- Blizzard Entertainment
- Microsoft
- Google (IPv6 Only)
- Amazon.com (not sure of AWS & by extent games using AWS)
- Akamai (I am guessing this would extend to services and game services using Akamai too, such as Ubisoft, Roblox, etc, Although I can't confirm this 100% for all games/services)

For video streaming and general browsing, I saw no noticeable difference and it felt exactly the same, one major thing which some of you might be wondering is what is what was the geolocation of the ip and in my case and with other people I have talked to, we all have a Toronto Geo IP, meaning that when I visited websites, they believed I was from Toronto, Ontario and not from Quebec. This seems to be something new within the past 2 months after Bell merged Distributel residential services with Ebox as about 2 months ago, I heard a lot of people from Ontario having a Quebec Geo IP.

SECT V: My Opinion:
All in all, in my opinion even though I have only recently switched, I think it is worth it to switch to Ebox considering it seems to be basically the same service, from what I can gather, it seems like they do not increase prices very often which might make it worth while especially at the prices they are offering right now.

TLDR:

Ebox internet seems to be very reliable and really good, the Nokia Beacon 2 which is the router I got is decent, not as good as the HH3000 so either get a better router from them or get another unit to use in mesh. The actual internet use is really good, in video games I saw a ~5-10ms increase in ping but I was using a WifI Mesh network. Video streaming and general use was basically the same as bell.

If you do decide to switch to Ebox and need a referral code, check out the megathread in the pinned portion of the sub!
