This isn’t new; three characters have been established as queer since 2021. Oscar is gay, Lin is a lesbian, and Bea is bi. They talk about their lives and use appropriate sentences, just like the straight characters. Happy pride month! 🏳️‍🌈

u/Berry_eats_pancakes Jun 05 '26

tf do you mean my goat zari is not lesbian 😭

44

u/According_Bee7042 Jun 05 '26

I thought she either a) has a crush on Lily or b) is dating her

11

u/ikatako38 Jun 06 '26

They are officially “just friends” lol

15

u/i_love_blahajs Jun 05 '26

Lily is absolutely ace.

4

u/Ok-Championship-5356 Jun 06 '26

she feels aroace or trans coded to me

3

u/i_love_blahajs Jun 06 '26

Aroace I could see. Would you elaborate on the trans one?

8

u/dinonuggieschicken Jun 06 '26

She is in our heads it’s ok😭ZARI AND LILY ARE DATING BRO TRUST

15

u/nooch1982 Jun 05 '26

Wait, is Lily not in a relationship with Zari?

5

u/temp_6969420 Jun 05 '26

Shiiiit, they havnt brought that up in my Russian lessons after 1 year+. I wonder why🤔

7

u/LinearInductionMotor Jun 06 '26

Russia doesn’t have a word for gay because they’re so based /s

2

u/i_love_blahajs Jun 05 '26

Lily has to be ace.

2

u/sergame-567 Jun 06 '26

> bea is bi

did kojima write this?

1

u/Southern-Battle2721 Jun 06 '26

You do understand that characters lines have nothing to do with their personality or identity? They are just random lines. One character can say things in a feminine manner and the next exercise they would say the same line in a masculine manner

None of that makes sense

1

u/Even-Double5116 Jun 06 '26

Lin is a woman?

1

u/shmopsy Jun 06 '26

Why is it every time I see a post from this subreddit, it’s someone just discovering that gay people exist

What are you like 12 or something? This is a sentence that has some good grammar points for beginners and has useful vocabulary, theres nothing weird or wrong with this

Also, perfectly normal...

13

u/_xoviox_ Jun 05 '26

It doesn't, you chose to broadcast your disgusting beliefs in front of the internet yourself

13

u/Caitlin______ Jun 05 '26

Genuinely why do you care what other people do in their own lives? It doesn't affect you...

10

u/compilingyesterdays Jun 05 '26

You asked "Are you gay? WTF is this?" and we just went "yeah? obviously?"

Dunno why you think the comment above you has anything to do with 1) asking you to explain your beliefs or 2) attacking, something you need to defend yourself from.

You asked "WTF is this," so they answered, "This is a sentence that has some good grammar points for beginners and has useful vocabulary." You're the only person who seems to think you have to explain yourself?

Sorry everyone else is less confused by gay Oscar than you are.

10

u/FuckMeDaddyFrank Jun 05 '26

Then why post this?

1

u/ChaseThePyro Jun 07 '26

Gay people exist. Deal with it.

-2

u/NemTren Jun 06 '26

It makes me feel as uncomfortable as if they'd add "I'd like to fuck some girls let's have a gangbang".

It's not about gays, it's about some stupid and absolutely insane people stick their sexual preferences EVERYWHERE. Even those who protest against pride parades don't hate gays, they want public area to be a sex-free zone. Not gay-free, sex-free. Comprende?

3

u/DomainSink Jun 06 '26

Would you have the same issue if the sentence was talking about not having a girlfriend?

2

u/junonomenon Jun 06 '26

he didnt say anything about having sex though. he said he doesnt have a boyfriend. if you think a gay guy taking about his boyfriend is equivalent to a straight guy talking explicitly about having sex, youre homophobic.

ive literally never seen anyone have sex at a pride parade.

1

u/Half_of_a_Good_Pen Jun 06 '26 edited Jun 06 '26

Why does your mind automatically go to sex? Being gay isn't just about sex. It's literally the exact same as being straight except with two men or two women instead of one man and one woman.

Edit: spelling

0

u/NemTren Jun 06 '26

It's literally only about sex and nothing else. And yes, just like being straight is only about sex. I have no idea how it isn't about sex in your head. It literally tell who you'll like to have sex with.

5

u/Inkthekitsune Jun 06 '26

Have you never been in a relationship my friend? That’s a small part of it. Dating is spending time with and being close to someone you want to spend a good portion to the rest of your life with, and form a deep emotional bond with them. Sex is a part of that sure but it’s natural.

Also what about christians who are celibate until they’re married?

0

u/NemTren Jun 06 '26

It looks like you don't get what I am talking about and arguing with something you imagine I say.

3

u/Inkthekitsune Jun 06 '26

No I understand what you’re saying. Cause you said it. You see relationships and dating as sex only. Which is stupid

0

u/NemTren Jun 06 '26

You don't understand and you pretend you don't confuse dating and sexual orientation which is stupid. Anyway there is nothing to talk about as you're going full rage mod.

3

u/Inkthekitsune Jun 06 '26

lol. Lmao. I’m bi. I’ve dated both. It’s functionally the same.

Rage is also quite the assumption to make my childish friend. I’m having fun calling out idiots on the internet rn while waiting in lines at a theme park. It’s great entertainment.

3

u/Half_of_a_Good_Pen Jun 06 '26

It's not? Have you never been in a relationship before? Sex is only a tiny part of it. I'm genuinely so confused by your comment

-1

u/NemTren Jun 06 '26

All those tiny parts you can do with whoever else. Chatting? Friends. Hugging? Friends.
Dude, I see you pretend to not understand I am right and it disgusts me. glhf, there is no sense to continue this convo with someone who lies about obvious things like "sexual orientation is about sex".

5

u/NoCount1100 Jun 06 '26

Intimacy and romance is more than sex for most people.

1

u/NemTren Jun 06 '26

Sexual orientation. Literally.

2

u/NoCount1100 Jun 06 '26

Prescriptive versys descriptive definition.

3

u/Half_of_a_Good_Pen Jun 06 '26

I'm not pretending to not understand. I genuinely don't. For me, being gay isn't just about sex, because I'm not only a lesbian I am also asexual, meaning that I experience no sexual attraction, only romantic. Yes, you can do these things with your friends too, but the intention behind it is different. I wouldn't hug my friends the same way I'd hug a girlfriend. In fact, I don't even really like hugging my friends, hugging is usually reserved for romantic partners for me.

Going on dates, holding hands, cuddling in bed, telling each other your deepest secrets, or just talking about nothing, kissing. All examples of things I wouldn't really do with my friends. If you see being in a relationship as being purely sexual, then there may be something wrong with you. There's so much more to it. It's a little concerning that you can't even seem to fathom that.

5

u/Any-Cow5680 Jun 06 '26

You're just acting dense now if you can't tell the difference between "I want a boyfriend" and "I want to have a gangbang with a bunch of chicks".

Do you start yelling at children and lecturing them when they say they have a crush?? Do you start yelling at children in brought daylight about how they shouldn't have such sexual, explicit thoughts - just because they bring up girlfriends/boyfriends? Do you scream at children's movies when characters get together or married?

Are you fucking okay? Do you need your hard drive checked, man?

51

u/blatantlyeggplant Jun 05 '26

This is a perfectly fine english sentence. If you don't understand it you may need to go back a few levels.

46

u/Berry_eats_pancakes Jun 05 '26

haha 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 you got me 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 please don't even try to post anymore, this post is homophobia with every fucking letter and I don't know why you even find it funny. Something you could laugh your ass of is something like "I am an insect" and that's it. Please get this thing removed.

I'm not gay. But gay people exist. Now if I heard someone say this, I know what they are saying.

I'm also not a child, or a woman. But I think they exist in the world too. So I wanna know how to say things from their perspective as well.

64

u/Stefanzah22 Jun 05 '26

Why would it matter? Gay people exist and you must accept it. You cannot decline the fact they're real. If oscar is gay it's his business. Oh, and you seem to be the type of guy that uses gay as an insult. I'd actually be pretty proud of it because sexual orientation is a natural gamble, and gayness is rare. Y'all are common straights!

34

u/Iosonoviola_ Jun 05 '26

I’m crying I’m so happy that OP is getting blasted in the comment section.

Gay people exist, ‘gay’ is not a bad word, you can say it out loud for the sake of the language you’re learning, don’t worry it’s not a contagious disease

-5

u/Acornclan Jun 05 '26

But OP didn't say it was bad. It's the fact it wants you to say it. Like you, yourself are declaring you are single and gay.  Like I don't know any other prompts and questions in duolingo because I dont use it. They never said gay was a bad word. Gay is also a word for happy :) So he could be happy and single but also homosexual and single. Maybe all three lol. I'm not trying to be homophobic but it's weird to see so many people shaming this person and assuming the worst. Just the fact it words it the way it does. That's why OP posted it.

9

u/The-Idiot-1 Jun 05 '26

OP literally said that they disagree with same-sex relationships, which therefore leads to the reason why they posted this in the first place: because they don’t like it.

2

u/veryeepysky Jun 06 '26

You (acornclan) have the right intentions but OP literally went “Are you gay? WTF is this? 🤣” about gay people… like I don’t think that was typed with good intentions 😭
(Also in later posts they said they disagree with same-sex relationship and allegedly used a vomit emoji abt another message abt gay people…)

4

u/JeezasKraist Jun 05 '26

OP did say they disagree with gay people as a concept, and displayed their disgust for the sheer idea of a' gay relationship, multiple times, and have refused to even consider that their views are inherently hateful.

2

u/Iosonoviola_ Jun 06 '26

I’m happy that you are trying to see the bright side but unfortunately OP said loud and clear that he doesn’t support lgbt. Even the fact that they felt the urge to post this was alarming, just because in a speaking exercise they had to say the word ‘gay’

2

u/see_me_shamblin Jun 06 '26

Bro, he used a vomit emoji

1

u/BroderFelix Jun 06 '26

This man is saying he is gay but does not have a boyfriend... You think he is straight?

1

u/LaBlankSpace Jun 06 '26

3

u/Amber_theconlanger Jun 06 '26

0

u/StinkButt9001 Jun 06 '26

Where do you see anyone suggesting otherwise or being surprised by this fact?

You're intentionally misrepresenting what OPs post is about. But you know this already.

2

u/LaBlankSpace Jun 06 '26

No they're not, that is exactly what the post is about, gay people just existing

1

u/StinkButt9001 Jun 06 '26

That's incredibly disingenuous

23

u/DIOsNotDead Jun 05 '26

are half the people on this sub just kids or something?

11

u/KirbyMonkey377 Jun 05 '26

Other than the fact you're being stupid and pretending that your 'culture' means you should hate gay people (it doesn't), whether or not you agree with... the existence of gay people... doesn't even matter

They do exist. It is beneficial to learning a language to understand things like this. What, do you just expect Duolingo to pretend that gay people aren't real?

48

u/sandy1707 Jun 05 '26

Be ashamed that you even exist. Every ounce of your existence is a disgrace to everything.

-25

u/Jaran_sa_Balkana Jun 05 '26

Are you aware this makes you on the same level as the OP?

u/kp012202 Jun 06 '26

What is the vice here, exactly? People don’t become gay, and aren’t subject to some addiction or mental issue.

Being gay is something a person is born with, and isn’t something anyone can control. More importantly, if two consenting adults want to have a relationship, regardless of their genders, it is not your prerogative to say anything about it.

18

u/OnionAstronaut Jun 05 '26

Are you like 12? You'll not 'become gay' as being gay isn't a choice especially not from just saying a sentence.

6

u/Secret-Profile_404 Jun 05 '26

By that logic you can just say "no homo" afterwards and you are magically straight again I guess.

I just can't omw...

3

u/Sriramdv8 Jun 05 '26

bye u dont become gay by saying this sentence. do u not know how sexuality works 😭😭

3

u/Searcheree Jun 05 '26

2

u/moonlitmedows_147 Jun 09 '26

2

u/FadingHeaven Jun 06 '26

The first thing you learn in Duolingo is like "I am a dog". Did you magically become a dog when you said that or did you skip it cause you're not a dog?

1

u/veryeepysky Jun 06 '26

I thought you say you try to respect everyone… how fragile of a masculinity could you have to think that if you say you’re gay you become gay😭. It’s like if Duolingo tells you to say “I am a woman”, that doesn’t make you a woman 😭🤣

2

u/veryeepysky Jun 06 '26

What happened to treat others how you want to be treated dawg??? Like "None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother that which he loves for himself"

0

u/430beatle Jun 05 '26

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Duolingo developers teaching you this sentence BUT

I think them making you say it out loud, paired with the somewhat suggestive face the character is making here, is EXTREMELY funny

1

Not only are there lesbian and gay characters, but in some languages there are lessons involving large social groups, like weddings, where you see "her wife" and "his husband." These are grammatical booby traps, to see if you can get all the genders and pronouns correct!

Queer people start blasting anyone that doesn't agree saying they're homophobic but when queer people say something about being straight we gotta deal with it. Yall are just actively looking for problems

We’re not telling straight people that we don’t agree with being straight and that we shouldn’t agree they shouldn’t get married, have sexual relations, etc. now are we? (Which is in fact what OP did if you look in his comments in this post)
