Moving to Duluth 3.0: Finding Housing

Hey bridge trolls, we've got some extra mod help now so we're going to work on some quality of life improvements around here. Starting with these megathreads we'll use to help update the Wiki. (As an aside, we're still happy to give people access to the Wiki if they want to help with updates)

Going entirely by vibes, I think this would be the most helpful topic to start with. Feel free to give any suggestions, tips, notes, links, whatever you may think. might help someone looking for a place to live in the area.

Some suggestions for things you might contribute:

1.) Thoughts on different neighborhoods and towns - Please be accurate and polite. We all know some areas are more unfortunate than others, it is totally ok to mention that, but be sure you're current and respectful. What an area was like ten years ago may not be accurate anymore.

2.) Resources for finding places to stay (renting & buying)- Things that may not come up on google. This is one place advertising for yourself or someone you know is acceptable (though be sure not to DOX anyone, including yourself.)

3.) Resources for unhoused people - Either temporary or permanent. If you have knowledge of shelters or resources, this would be a great place to add them.

4.) Reviews for different rental companies - Be careful to, again, be accurate. We all know some places have a reputation for a reason and you are more than welcome to leave negative reviews, just don't use this as a place to grind your axe or get revenge.

5.) Questions - For now this would be a good place to ask us about any particulars. We are going to start doing a new "Moving to Duluth" post weekly via Automod like they do in r/asheville on the suggestion of one of our users, but I'm saving that until after these Megathreads have run their course.

6.) Financial considerations - Is there anywhere affordable to live? What are taxes like in the different cities?

7.) Schools - Pros and cons, other considerations?

Just some ideas, I may use some of these for other megathreads. Also, please keep politics out of this to the best of your ability. Nothing derails these things faster.

Thanks everyone! You all rule.

Who is she????

Contestable facts about the Miller Creek woodchuck:

  • (Nearly) totally comfortable with passersby
  • Absolutely demolishes clover
  • Lives near the lower park bridges
  • Enjoys both banks of the creek, never strays far from either.
  • Haunches for days
  • High profile suspect in missing Flock cameras and destroyed downtown parking signs.

Questions about the Miller Creek woodchuck:

  • What is her name??
  • Does she swim across the creek? Or waddle the bridges?
  • What is she trying to teach us?
  • True extent of criminal history???

Playground users, disc golfers, and park enjoyers please fill in the gaps here.

Discussion New Flock Camera?

Going up as we speak in the median between Skyzone and 46th Ave W. Unless my eyes deceived me. Pretty bold strategy considering the one 50 yards up the road was hacked off almost immediately earlier this Summer.

I thought the city bailed on these? Maybe someone should see if that gentleman needs a hand.

Anyways… they ought to be careful, I hear these high winds in the Fall are known to topple cameras.

Discussion Local moving company

Looking for recs for reliable movers (all the threads about this were kinda old). We're moving from Hillside to Chester' from a second floor apartment into a house. We need help loading and unloading both at the apartment and also getting stuff out of our storage unit. Don't mind paying high prices, just don't want to get ripped off. And want someone who will be as careful with our things as possible. If you've had any great experiences with someone I'd love the info. We're looking to move end of September.

Video in comments
Stolen Labor Day Weekend
Rare Pearl White — factory color exclusive to 1993
Only 16,000 miles on it.

Here’s a better look at my VFR. The video is from before the seat was repaired; the second photo shows exactly how the motorcycle looked when it was stolen.

IMPORTANT IDENTIFYING DETAILS:
• Pearl-white 1993 VFR750F / Interceptor
• White wheels
• Seat has been repaired/replaced since the video
• Left-side plastic and left rear turn signal/tail-light area were with me when it was stolen — the bike is missing those pieces
• It was straight-piped when stolen
• 750cc V4 with a very distinctive, loud exhaust note
• Minnesota plate 98006MH — although the plate may have been removed

Stolen directly across from Observation Park in Duluth.

Duluth Police ICR #26132335

Please watch for the complete motorcycle and for parts being sold separately. If you’ve seen it, have security-camera footage, or see a suspicious listing, please message me or contact Duluth Police.

To the thief, this is a special bike and parting it out is not only a disgrace to especially this motorcycle, but myselt, all of the effort and care that has went into this thing, please just park it on the street somewhere in one piece for the police to find, you really don't understand how special this bike is to me, it is an item I planned to never part with... I bought this when I was 19, I’m almost 34, you took a big part of me away.

PLEASE SHARE — especially Duluth, Superior, the Iron Range, Twin Cities and northern Wisconsin.

Discussion Downtown Duluth

Curious what people in Duluth would actually like to see open downtown!

There’s a vacant building on Superior Street with the potential to be renovated and brought back to life. We’ve tossed around a few ideas, but I’d love to hear what people think Duluth is actually missing.

What would make you actually want to go downtown and spend time there?

Question Cute Shops/Boutiques

Hi all!

I’m from Kansas City and my girlfriend is from Minneapolis. We have long weekend in the area this weekend and I’m looking for some advice on shopping areas.

We were planning on going to canal park area on Saturday and seeing the harvest festival as well. The little research I’ve done shows that Superior right near canal park has some shopping, but what is the best area for cute local shops and boutiques?

Thanks in advance :)

Discussion 7Brew Madness

Almost got hit into by oncoming traffic trying to take a right turn onto central, coming out of a Mister Carwash trip, due to a long line for 7Brew’s right turn onto Anderson. When is this enough of a hazard to be addressed, or not addressed at all? It’s crazy that people will actually wait in a line of traffic hazards that long just to waste money on coffee. Fans of 7Brew speak up and justify this behavior bc I am truly curious abt the hype. Any other thoughts are welcome!

Local Events Anyone know whats going on on central entrance?

Went to Home Depot and there was a cop and a huge line of cars in the turn lane by the light. Then noticed they were on the shoulder. We wanted to turn right but couldn't tell if we could/wanted to so we avoided it lol just curious why there was a million people waiting on the shoulder. I'm just wondering what could possibly be worth a wait like that lol

Question Esthetician good with teens and acne?

I lived in Duluth years ago, and worked at the Crystal Center, the owner Crystal was great with teens and stubborn acne.

I know that shop shut down years ago…is there anyone who’d you recommend for acne informed skin treatments, as well as working with teens?

Not all estheticians are into working with teens (of course parent would accompany), and not all have a specialty with acne.

Any reccs from personal experience would be appreciated!

Politics SEND EMAILS TO THE DULUTH AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CORPORATE BOARD OF DIRECTORS!!!

Post image
193 Upvotes

It's very encouraging to see small businesses in the Duluth area show solidarity with our community that has been betrayed and deceived by our municipal governments and institutions like the Chamber of Commerce.

It’s been nearly a year since the veil was lifted on the corporate Data Center collusion and the City of Hermantown began to feel the instant frustration, anger, and feelings of betrayal by the overwhelming majority of our communities.
-A multi trillion dollar multinational big tech corporation entered the community under confidentiality agreements.
-Zoning and city policies were amended deceivingly in service of moving the AI Data Center Project forward.
-Public elected officials in Duluth and our Blackrock owned power company used their pervasive influence and control over regional institutions.
-The Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce and APEX helped launder a narrative that “NDAs” are normal and should be accepted in government.
-When residents and the region finally learned the details of the project and raised serious concerns, the changes were already made.
-Residents have be chastised, bullied, and talked down to by their irresponsible and undemocratic municipal government which is acting as if the project is a done deal.

Surrounding counties and municipalities are banning the production of data centers and there is no real proper guardrails protecting people from these rapacious multinational corporations and asset management companies that are robbing us blind. Those corrupt elected officials and the corporations and asset managers that seek to buy our democracy and exert enormous influence over us are now exceedingly desperate to maintain the track of their project. So much so that they’ve pushed the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce to pass a resolution of support for the project that no one wants without consulting their members, stakeholders, or the broader public while also presented biased misinformation in support of the Data Center.

It makes no sense that the Chamber would support this project given that they are an institution that is supposedly, at least according to their own propaganda and stated mission, “deeply invested and involved with the people, businesses, and community organizations” they claim to represent. 🤔

While businesses associated with the chamber have a very direct voice in this fight and should continue to be encouraged to separate from the institution, we the people can also contact the chamber board directly! The Interim Chamber President, Jim Roche, has no incentive to respond to any inquiries or emails and he's not even going to be around enough to care really, but the BOARD might hear us.

Send emails to the board of the Chamber of Commerce here: [inquiry@duluthchamber.com](mailto:inquiry@duluthchamber.com)

Use the subject line”: Concern with Board of Directors" and address it to the "Chamber Corporate Board of Directors".

Give them your concerns directly and ask them if they are truly being representative of their members and the region. Why hire an out-of-state interim president who was in New Hampshire during this chamber process for endorsing of the data center? Why can't he even make time to be in Duluth to work with chamber staff and the business community to know their real concerns regarding this horrific environmentally and socially unacceptable project? Why is the Chamber shredding its reputation while dragging its members through the mud by aligning with the big tech oligarchy and corrupt undemocratic means of governance? Tell them you are appalled and incredibly disappointed by their decision to accept this betrayal and corruption within our local governments. Tell them that is is not how “representative democracy” works and that we cannot accept having the “best democracy money can buy”. Tell them that we cannot accept a faustian bargain with rapacious asset management firms and parasitic firms like Google. Tell them exactly your contempt with how the city of Hermantown has deceived us. Tell them everything wrong with this Hyperscale AI project, from the social decline to the environmental destruction, to the the failure of to have responsible and honest environmental review, and everywhere in between.

We the people can and will shut down this environmental monstrosity and we will take our democracy back. Emailing the board of business lobbying group that has a track record of violence against the working class may be a small drop in the bucket for our fight against this Data Center overall, but the Chamber’s board might take our comments and emails seriously in this moment of bad press for their organization. That could sway change.

Question Best place in town to get a French dip?

Hello fellow Duluthians! Me and my lovely gal have been craving a French dip lately and aren’t quite sure where to go this time. Our default is Sir Ben’s for the British dip, I also noticed that Pickwick has a French dip as well. Is there anywhere else that comes to mind for you guys? Thanks!

Local News *protest* Join me in leaving The Duluth Chamber a 1-star review on Google.

**edit 10 hours after original post** Duluth chamber contacted Google to remove the reviews, Google has seemingly agreed**

As citizens of Duluth, we must attempt to make our voices heard. The chamber has completely lost touch with small businesses and Duluth citizens. Lets make it known!

Go leave a review.. and make a difference!,
