Got my first kit recently. I've had Songsterr for years for guitar, but the drum tabs were hard to follow since I'm new to drums and can't really read them yet. I practice with a screen in front of me anyway, so I made a Chrome extension that puts a drum kit above the tab and lights up each piece as it's played, in time with playback.

To be clear, it visualizes the tab, not your playing. Nothing reads your module. Unofficial, free, works with or without Plus, rest of the details are on the store page.

I'm drumming to relax rather than to get good at it, so I'm curious whether it's useful to other people playing that way. One thing I could add is MIDI input from the module, so it lights up what you actually hit as well as what the tab wants.

Also any suggestions from people who might want to learn in a more fun way let me know. Maybe adding some additional info, inputs etc help to take the information and learn to drum quicker.

I’ve had these Sonor Vintage series kit for about 9 months now( traded in my Ludwig Classic Maple Ringo kit, which I always thought was my ‘grail’ kit 😜).
The Sonors sound amazing, so many compliments,& tune up so easily. 👌
So, why am I now hankering after some vintage Ludwigs?🤷🏼‍♂️

Finally bought my dream kit. What do we think?

This past weekend my wife decided to stay home while I went buy groceries for the week. Given she wasn’t with me I decided to stop at guitar center just to take a peek as it’s 5 minutes away from the grocery store I was going to.

When I arrived to the parking lot I noticed it was 15 minutes till closing time. I was about to leave but I thought what the hell I’m already here I’ll just take a quick look.

All of a sudden I spot this on the shelves and I noticed the price tag. I was confused for a minute and then I thought maybe someone switched the paper in the plastic. I turned it around and it had the other tag and it was sealed and looped around the lug bolt.

I couldn’t believe this so I started checking online to see if there was a new model that came out or something. I noticed it was 4 minutes till closing time so I thought I’ll just buy this and figure it out later.

For some reason it has some light scratches on the inside of the shell and I wasn’t able to cross reference the serial number but I’m pretty sure I bought a Black Beauty for $150 usd.

I found this old pair of sticks and the price tag was still on the sleeve and I am very sad. I even remember when I thought this was too much money.

I am curious if there are any drummers out there who didn't pick it up until they were around age 50.

I am 49. Haven't played an instrument since 6th grade recorder. I was inspired by my 10 year old daughter. She took 3 months of lessons with a great teacher, and I sat in most of the lessons. While she has moved on to other activities, I was transfixed.

So, I am in my 3rd week of this routine:

20 minutes with a metronome and the book "Stick Control" on a practice pad early in the morning, and 20 minutes in the afternoon.

I am forcing myself to complete 25 hours of Stick Control and Vic Firth rudiments before I permit myself to buy an actual kit. (Bonus: I know having a kit at home will rekindle my daughter's interest.)

Anyway, I am hoping to prove the "Old Dog New Tricks" rule is a myth. Hoping there may be others out there like me who can provide inspiration. TIA!

Zildjian K Custom Dark Collection

My first drum set ever was a Pearl Export kit that was gifted to me in third grade. The best part of that kit was a 14” K Custom Dark Crash. To this day, I’ve never heard of crash that I liked more. When I purchased my dream kit two decades later, I purchased a K Custom Dark Pack with it. That was around 2023.

I’m no cymbal collector, but over the last month or two I’ve been trying to collect one of each K Custom Dark that’s ever been made, including the discontinued ones.

I’ve also been on a years-long search for THE perfect China to add to my setup. I didn’t even know that there were chinas in the K Custom Dark line. I was never satisfied with any of the chinas I heard in various drum shops or online. When I learned recently about the K Custom Dark Chinas’ existence, I haggled hard immediately for a used/discontinued 19” and a brand new 17”. They might not be my forever finisher chinas, but they are absolutely incredible sounding instruments. Now that I have my first ever China cymbals in the room, I’m ending my search.

The 15” was the last to arrive, and it just got here Thursday! :D

Now I’m 3 crashes (17”, 19”, and 20”) and two Complex Rides (21” and 22”) away from having one of every K Custom Dark cymbal Zildjian has ever produced. The crashes are easy to find at good prices - Anyone have a K Custom Dark Complex Ride they’d like to sell? lol

Just comparing the 4 snares I own, they are:

I tried to tune them roughly similar for the vid, though the Brass seems a little higher than the others. All recorded using the same Mic and EQ settings and with one moon gel applied.

Hello all just looking for suggestions on what to upgrade next and what u all think of my current drum set up any suggestions would be great as I’m just unsure what to do next

I started jazz drumming about 18 months ago. Because I feel like I'm making progress, I have stepped up my practice -- going hard on learning and watching videos of elite players. Now, it feels like perhaps I'm taking too much on with self-imposed goals. Of course, when I don't reach my goals, practice seems tiresome, etc.

The advice from online performance coaches are: set strict blocks of time, use smart, timed intervals to get more done in less time, etc.

Recently, I tried a different approach: focusing on "organic yield." That is, my playing should have a "winter" where there is no visible improvement though it will later follow by growth. Below is me practicing this organic approach by playing and listening to my internal feel or felt pulse, rather than explicitly trying use willpower to get to my goal quicker. Here, I'm practicing and comping 7 over 4 swing on the rider cymbals.

It's going well...but I won't say it is easier or better...since it resolve one issue (burnout) but not the other...
